        Where the Wild Things Are.

New York: Harper & Row, 1963 - Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. With the Sendak designed dust jacket. Occasional spotting to pages, small pencil notes to two pages, which list the names of the Wild Things, light rubbing to corners, in the dust jacket with toning to white areas, light spotting along rear panel edges, short closed tears to front edges, lower corner to front flap clipped, 3.95 price still intact at upper portion. A very good copy. Illustrated by Sendak. First edition, first printing, first issue. There seem to be multiple issues of the first printing of this elusive and important book. Variations in price occur throughout the later states but have no bearing on the status of the true first issue. Primacy is established through the text of the blurb which, as in the present copy, makes no mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication. The winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust wrapper to include the achievement. Copies therefore with the original blurb are rare and are indubitably the earliest.

MONUMENT. A Lithograph. ARTIST PROOF Signed 1963

n.p.: Associated American Artists, 1963. First edition. Lithograph. Fine. Joseph Hirsch. Image measures approx 14 1/8 X 22 1/2 inches, overall (framed under glass) 31 1/4 x 26 inches. This copy is marked "Artist Proof, '63" and signed by the artist in pencil. There was an edition of 50 signed. Printed by Lucien Detruit, in Paris, on Arches paper. At seventeen, Hirsch was given a four-year scholarship to the Pennysylvania Museum School of Industrial Art by the city of Philadelphia winning awards in drawing and illustration, and he also studied with George Luks in New York. From Luks he developed a strong feeling for social realism and commentary. Hirsch's images are strong, uncluttered, and deal with living realities in urban situations, showing the tender and touch moments of the ordinary man in a compassionate and realistic manner. Hirsch's drawing of Willy Loman, slouched with face unseen, carrying his salesman's suitcases, used on the dust jacket of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (as well as the poster for the play), is a classic image that powerfully depicts much about humanity. It has been said that this image "Monument" is an image worthy to commemorate heroes from 9/11, as it shows a man on his hands and knees, shoeless, covered in dirt and soot, stunned but undaunted.

Book of the Hopi [Uncorrected Proof Copy]

Viking, NY 1963 - The uncorrected proof copy in comb-bound printed cardstock covers of this landmark volume relating the worldview of the Hopis, as compiled by Waters from the tales of thirty Hopi elders. A matter of some controversy in later years -- some people questioned the authenticity of the material or the qualifications of those who provided it -- this book nonetheless was profoundly influential in the Sixties, as another of the seminal volumes bringing some version of a Native American perspective and ethos to the mainstream society: this was a counterculture classic and a staple on college campuses in the late Sixties and early Seventies, thus contributing to the general push toward a more multicultural society. Waters' father was reportedly part Cheyenne, and Waters was an ardent admirer of, and advocate for, the values of Native American culture. A bit of corner creasing and dust soiling to covers; near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The dinner also commemorated the United Nations. Facing an inside page picturing President Truman witnessing the U.S. delegation signing the Charter on June 26, 1945, and separate photographs of the first three U.N. Secretaries-General, is a tribute to the United Nations concluding: ?The Man from Missouri fired the enthusiasms of the other great world leaders who helped sculpture its form. In June 1945, President Harry S. Truman?s wisdom, dedication and strength rallied the San Francisco Conference for chartering the United Nations with this prayer: ?Let us not fail to grasp this supreme chance to establish a world-wide rule of reason ?" to create an enduring peace under the guidance of God.??On June 29, 1945, after returning from San Francisco, President Truman, at his temporary suite atop the Hotel Muehlebach, had met with former Kansas Governor and 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon to discuss bipartisan support for prompt ratification of the Charter. On July 28, 1945, the Senate voted 89-2 for ratification.John W. Snyder?s close friendship with Harry S. Truman began in 1928 when Truman was a County Judge. They served together in the U.S. Army Reserves after World War I. Harry S. Truman was Colonel of Field Artillery, United States Army Reserve Corps. Lieutenant Colonel John W. Snyder was in Harry Truman?s Missouri Regiment, the 381st Field Artillery, 102nd Division. Snyder had a broad background in banking and business when he was appointed by President Truman as Federal Loan Administrator (1945), Director, Office of Mobilization and Reconversion (1945-1946), and Secretary of the Treasury (1946-1953). Of the 75 Secretaries of the Treasury, from Alexander Hamilton to Timothy Geithner, only six served longer than John W. Snyder."

[Typescript]: Cleopatra's Car [a chapter in Second Skin]

1963. Thirty page typescript, with a one page Typed Letter Signed by Donald Barthelme. Loose sheets attached by a staple with some rubbing, a crease to the final sheet, and some wear near the staple, near fine. Hawkes's name and address are in the upper left-hand corner but have been struck through in pencil and the address of the book's publisher, New Directions, is written underneath with a note referencing Second Skin, in publisher James Laughlin's hand. This chapter was apparently submitted for publication to the literary magazine Location but, according to the accompanying TLS from editor Donald Barthelme, was "not quite what we're looking for."         George Seferis Signed Poem

Two Page Autographed Poem by Nobel Prize-winning poet George Seferis, in his hand and signed by him. In 1963, George Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture." Seferis was the first Greek to receive the prize. While Seferis has sometimes been considered a nationalist poet, his 'Hellenism' had more to do with his identifying a unifying strand of humanism in the continuity of Greek culture and literature.
