Autograph Letter, signed ("Thomas H. Benton") to caricaturist Jay Clark, regarding the latter's depiction of him

Kansas City, Mo., november 23, 1963 - Funny letter from the artist to Clark, who evidently had sent Benton his caricatures: "Dear Jay Clark, "Your caricatures are fine. I think the one of me is best but maybe that is only because I like my face better than the faces of those other guys. "Keep it up. "I don't play the harmonica very much any more because when I hit a high note my false teeth jump out of my mouth. "Sincerely "your friend "Thomas H. Benton" 4to. One page. Fine. With Clark'e pen and ink and pencil caricature of Benson. The two in linen portfolio

        Black Spring

Grove Press, New York 1963 - Signed by Henry Miller on the title page. A fine unread copy in a VG+ jacket. Jacket has general shelf wear and rubbing. Protected by brodart sleeve. Continuing the subversive self-revelation begun in Tropic of Cancer, in his third book Henry Miller takes readers along a mad, free-associating journey from the damp grime of his Brooklyn youth to the sun-splashed cafes and squalid flats of Paris. With incomparable glee, Miller shifts effortlessly from Virgil to venereal disease, from Rabelais to Roquefort. In this seductive technicolor swirl of Paris and New York, he captures like no one else the blending of people and the cities they inhabit. Second printing.       Los Angeles: "New-Cal Publications, Inc.". 1963. "unpaginated [64pp., including covers]. Approx. 5.5 x 8.25"" production mock-up for a guide-book / tourist magazine that never materialized. This is the sort of dummy fashioned by a designer / art director as a guide for production artists. Columns and lines for text are neatly marked off, ads sketched out, and some photographs collaged in; Frank Sinatra's on the inside front cover; back cover is almost complete, with an ad for ""Le Lido de Paris"" at the Stardust Hotel. What makes this so fascinating and unique is the degree of detail and skill the illustrator has applied; a full-page ad for the Tropicana's ""Folies Bergere"" production is rendered in different colored markers, with the Tropicana logo drawn precisely, and neat sketches done where various photos would be laid in. Spot illos are done likewise same throughout, as well as ads for Seagram's, Western Air Lines, Greyhound, clothing, cars, and all the famous Vegas casinos and nightclubs: Martin Denny at The Sands, with Patti Page and George Gobel; Johnny Mathis at the Riviera; Betty Grable & Dan Dailey in Guys and Dolls at The Dunes; Robert Goulet and Myron Floren at the Flamingo, etc. Also, a TV guide, coming attractions, a column by ""Criswell,"" a map in the center, etc. There's something oddly haunting and mystifying about this magazine delineated purely through sketches, logos (done in great detail throughout), lines, and clouds of color - a dream-like version of a guidebook to a city of lights and dreams.         "EARLY BALLANTINE BURROUGHS" BOOKS: Tarzan of the Apes Books / John Carter of Mars Books / The War Chief / Apache Devil / The Lad and the Lion / The Mucker / Treasure of the Black Falcon

New York: Ballantine Books 1st Printings 1963-1967 ----------paperbacks, 41 BOOKS IN TOTAL, ALL FIRST BALLANTINE US PRINTINGS. From 1963 to 1967, Ballantine published 41 books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (and associational): the 25 TARZAN BOOKS (24 by Burroughs, 1 by Fritz Leiber), the 11 MARS BOOKS, THE WAR CHIEF, APACHE DEVIL, THE LAD AND THE LION, THE MUCKER, and TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON (by Burroughs son, John Coleman Burroughs). Ballantine reprinted the Tarzan and Mars books (and to some extent the 2 Apache books) over the years, but it wasn't until 1990 that Ballantine/Del Rey started printing Burroughs titles they hadn't published before. Offered here is the ENTIRE 41-BOOK SERIES of all these Ballantine early (1963-1967) printings, and ALL are FIRST PRINTINGS. Cover artists are as follows: Richard Powers (Tarzan 1 to 22), Bob Abbett (Tarzan 23 to 25, all the Mars books, and probably Treasure of the Black Falcon), Ronnie M. Lessor (The War Chief & Apache Devil) and R. Bartram (The Lad and the Lion). Tarzan 25, The Mucker, and Treasure of the Black Falcon bear an original cover price of $0.75, while all the other books have a cover price of $0.50. As for condition, only 1 book, Apache Devil, can be classified as good, due to several cover creases. The other books range from VG to near fine (my highest rating), with most being at least VG+. There are a few minor creases, mild edgewear, shelfwear, mild toning inside covers and store stamps. Some are obviously unread, and close to as new. A list of the books and publisher numbers in this ENTIRE early Ballantine series follows. TARZAN: #1 F745 Tarzan of the Apes, #2 F746 The Return of Tarzan, #3 F747 The Beasts of Tarzan, #4 F748 The Son of Tarzan, #5 F749 Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, #6 F750 Jungle Tales of Tarzan, #7 F751 Tarzan the Untamed, #8 F752 Tarzan the Terrible, #9 F753 Tarzan and the Golden Lion, #10 F754 Tarzan and the Ant Men, #11 F772 Tarzan Lord of the Jungle, #12 F777 Tarzan and the Lost Empire, #13 U2013 Tarzan at the Earth's Core, #14 U2014 Tarzan the Invincible, #15 U2015 Tarzan Triumphant, #16 U2016 Tarzan and the City of Gold, #17 U2017 Tarzan and the Lion Man, #18 U2018 Tarzan and the Leopard Men, #19 U2019 Tarzan's Quest, #20 U2020 Tarzan and the Forbidden City, #21 U2021 Tarzan the Magnificent, #22 U2022 Tarzan and the Foreign Legion, #23 U2023 Tarzan and the Madman, #24 U2024 Tarzan and the Castaways and #25 U6125 Tarzan and the Valley of Gold (by Fritz Leiber, a FIRST EDITION).         SIGNED PERSONAL ADDRESS BOOK of New York Yankees catcher with many names including Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, etc.

      - Small (2-3/4" x 3-3/4") pocket-sized otherwise unremarkable flexible cloth address book but for the fact that it belonged to great New York Yankees catcher Elston Howard who has SIGNED it with his address at the beginning along with another smaller partial signature on the front pastedown. It contains numerous names, phone numbers, and addresses written by Howard including Jackie Robinson, Harry Belafonte, Carmine Basilio, Rocky Colavito, Roy Campanella, Eddie Fisher, Lefty Gomez, Yogi Berra, Ralph Houk, Minnie Minoso, Pee Wee Reese, Bill Skowron, etc., even Yankee Stadium itself. Elston Howard was the first African-American to play for the Yankees, one of the last major league clubs to become integrated. Due to the presence of Yogi Berra behind the plate, Howard played several different positions before he earned a regular job with the Yankees and still managed to be a member of four American League All-Star teams in that time. In 1963 Howard hit a career-high 28 home runs and was voted the American League's Most Valuable Player-- the first black player to win the honor. An excellent fielder and hitter, the nine-time All Star seemed to have only one weakness: speed. His manager Casey Stengel reportedly said of Howard: "I finally get a black guy and they give me the only one who can't run." Howard died in 1980 at the ago of 50. A few loose or detached pages. Backstrip lacking, shaken, but all there and quite scarce [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Hummingbirds and Orchids of Mexico

Editorial Fournier, Mexico City 1963 - This is a very good hardcover copy in a good only remnant of the dust jacket. The jacket front panel only survives, and it has edge-wear, creases, light soil. Grey cloth covers clean overall but some soiling to bottom of spine. Completely clean inside. First few pages have a soft vertical crease, and top right corner bumped, otherwise very good throughout. This book is effectively the first actual publication of Rafael Montes de Oca's great 19th century work. He was unable to arrange publication in his lifetime, and only the chance appearance of a portfolio of his prints about 75 years after his death, made it possible in 1963. This book was published as a limited numbered edition of 3000 copies: 1500 in English and 1500 in Spanish. Editing and foreword by Carolina Amor de Fournier. Introduction and texts on the hummingbirds by Rafael Martin del Campo. English translation by Norman Pelham Wright. 59 spectacular colored plates reproduced from original watercolors in the Galería de Arte Mexicano, México, D.F. painted by Rafael Montes de Oca from 1874-1878. A beautiful production. 16" high X 12" wide, 34 pages of text. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Collector.

London, Jonathan Cape 1963. - First edition (first issue, in variant cloth colour). Hardcover. Neat ownership signature at the top corner of the fly-leaf, and date (1964) at the bottom corner, o/w fine in very fine price-clipped dustjacket (all first issue copies have had clipped jackets) with a couple tiny closed tears at the head of the spine, wonderfully illustrated in colour by Tom Adams. The author's important first novel, a psychological thriller about a repressed clerk and butterfly collector who spends a fortune won at the football pools on the kidnapping of a female art student (a similar theme has been used subsequently by Thomas Harris in "The Silence of the Lambs", and by scores of modern writers of pyschological thrillers, usually with less emphasis on the pyschology and atmosphere and more on the perverse violence and forensics). Made into a William Wyler film in 1965, starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar. This is a copy of the exceedingly rare first issue, in charcoal-coloured papered boards, no top edge stain, of which less than a handful have been noted in the last 40 years. It is evident this was a trial or variant binding, rather than an issue of any substantial number. The charcoal-papered binding was a standard "house cloth" for Cape at the time (used on most of the Ian Fleming 'Bond' books, for example), and it is probable the bindery began the production of the case in the charcoal colour before directions were given for the rust-coloured binding and matching top edge stain of the standard issue, which is perhaps a slightly better match for the predominately cream-coloured jacket. On the other hand, the variant charcoal-coloured boards match the large key in Adams' illustration, as well as the black lettering of "The Collector" on the front panel and spine of the jacket, so the chance first issue is every bit as aesthetically pleasing as the standard issue. The bibliographical importance of all this is debatable, but the scarcity of the first issue is not in question. Only a few fervent Fowles collectors have spotted copies in the last four decades, and the Marie de France epigraph which graces "The Collector" can be applied ironically to the first issue's elusiveness: "Que for aus ne le sot riens nee" (No one knew of it but them"). The cornerstone of a complete Fowles collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
