        List of Ten Books

[c. 1963]. In Yates's hand, a list of ten books, numbered 1 through 10, on the verso of a 1963 letter from the President of Little, Brown to a Miss Claire Gardiner of Washington, DC, saying that Little, Brown did not have a role in choosing titles for the White House Libraries Project but that Yates's Revolutionary Road would have been "an excellent choice." The White House Libraries Project put together 100 books to be given to 100 heads of state "to help tell the story of the American way of life to the people of one hundred nations in all parts of the world." It is unknown to us how or why Yates came to list ten titles on the verso of this letter, but his criteria apparently differed from that of the White House, as the list includes Flaubert's Madame Bovary (at number 2), Moore's The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (number 3), Joyce's Dubliners (number 5), Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms (number 6), Mailer's The Naked and the Dead (number 8), Conrad's Lord Jim (number 9), and Ford's The Good Soldier (number 10). In fact the only books on Yates's list that are set on American soil are Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (number 7), Styron's Lie Down in Darkness (number 4), and, at number 1, Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. As a Top 10 list, it gives an interesting view of Yates's take on literary immortality, at least at that moment in time. Styron's presence on the list -- ahead of Joyce and Hemingway -- is something of a surprise, but an indication of the esteem in which he was held in those years by other writers; Yates himself came to occupy a similar position eventually, having taught and mentored a number of later-to-be-prominent writers while he was on the faculty of the Iowa Writers Workshop. Folded in thirds, two faint coffee stains; near fine. Provenance: Wendy Sears.

        Sant'Alfio 1958

Milano: Edizione privata, 1963. Prima edizione di 10 es. numerati. ril tela (cloth). Ottimo (Fine). 4to (cm 28,2x233). Significativa dedica con firma autografa dell'Autore datata 3-2-1989 (Substantial inscription signed by the Author, dated 3-2-1989). Sant'Alfio 10 Maggio. 1973). Una nota di F. Di Nardo e un estratto dalla Bibliotheca Sanctorum sul martire Sant'Alfio / Private edition by the Author. 12 full-page black and white photographs mounted on board. Original printed cloth. One of 10 copies only, the entire edition comprising 12 photographs in black and white. Finocchiaro was a founding member of Milan's 'Il Gruppo 66' and was part of the 'Circolo Fotografico Milanese' and 'Il Naviglio' Finocchiaro (Catania 1920) fu tra i fondatori del Gruppo Il Naviglio e del Gruppo 66 dopo il suo trasferimento a Milano.

Milano: All'insegna del pesce d'oro, 1963. Edizione originale di 60 + A-E es. numerati. quartini sciolti in broch e custodia (loose as issued in soft covers and slip-case). Ottimo (Fine). 24mo. Dieci silografie originali numerate e firmate a matita (cm 6,6x5,6).

Tokyo: Inoue Shoten, 1963. Fine in a near fine jacket, very good publisher's card slipcase, age-toned and rubbed at the extremities; lacking the scarce obi. The first signed copy I have handled.. First Edition. Quarto. The first book by photojournalist Kazuo Kenmochi, SIGNED by him, that details drug culture in Japan in the early 60s: from production, to distribution, addiction and finally incarceration. The images are crisp, stark, frightening and intimate, all traits one might associate with Larry Clark or Nan Goldin, yet Kenmochi's intention was purely documentary. Predating Araki and Moriyama, this arresting work remained under the radar until recently. (Parr / Badger, v3, 82.).
