        The Cinema of Alfred Hitchcock

Garden City, New York: Doubleday and Company. (1963). First. First edition. Stapled wrappers. Small quarto. 48pp. Wavy pages due to water damage, dampstaining to rear wrap, thus good only. One of Bogdanovich's early appearances in print, though what sets this otherwise regrettable copy apart is that it is Signed by Hitchcock with his customary profile sketch on the title page. While the signature has faded slightly, it is not dampstained and remains complete and very distinguishable. .

        Jazz records, 1942-1962

Holte, Denmark: Karl Emil Knudsen,, 1963-70. 8 volumes in 11. Perfect-bound in the original printed light card wraps. Some illustrated advertisements to the text. Spines a touch creased, wraps just a little rubbed, a few annotations to the text, but overall an unusually well-preserved set. First editions. Monumental labour of love. Brian Rust had produced a discography of Jazz Records A to Z: 1897-1931, extended to 1941 in the second edition, but this left the period of the massive proliferation of published jazz untouched; " It was Jorgen Grunnet Jepsen of Copenhagen who undertook that monumental task. He continued in time where Rust left off and started the alphabet at M where Jazz Directory had stopped. The first four volumes were completed in 1963-1965 and were titled Jazz Records 1942-1962. The projection was to complete it in eight volumes, but those who are fortunate enough to have a complete set know that it required 11 volumes. Since the starting volume M-N was called Volume 5 and Te-Z Volume 8, it required a Volume 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d to make everything coincide. Fortunately as he progressed he continued to cover later years and the last volume covers the period from 1942-1969." ( Jerry Atkins, Magnificent Obsession: The Discographers, in Jazz Journal International, 1982) In his foreword to the final volume Jepsen, understandably, withdraws from the fray; "It has been ten busy but rather fascinating years. With this volume the whole alphabet has been covered, but this of course is only the beginning. I am withdrawing from discographical research, but I know there are many who will keep up the good work."

Photo Album - West Indies - Venezuela

West Indies, 1963. Photograph Album West Indies - Latin America Rare Views of Curaçao Island 1963 West Indies, Panama, Venezuela, 1963-1964. Album containing 40 black and white wide-margined photographs of a voyage to Latin America on RMS Mauretania, striking views captured by a skilled eye, with embedded manuscript captions, mounted onto 20 cardstock leaves. Photographs measure 9 x 12 cm (image portion only). Including margins, prints measure approximately 12 x 18 cm with some slight variances. 8vo. patented Amfile photograph scrapbook album made in Kankakee, Illinois, measuring approximately 17,5 x 24 cm, black tooled cloth boards. Minor wear to spine extremities, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a pleasing album. The RMS Mauretania having cruised the New York to West Indies route for only a brief period, and a city view in Caracas showing an immense presidential election campaign sign, serve to date the album between September 1963 and March 1964. [General elections were held in Venezuela on 1 December 1963, and Raúl Leoni Otero was elected President on 13 March 1964.] Splendidly crisp images of alluring vistas and inviting lifestyle scenes, captured by an unknown and cleverly artistic photographer, evoke unexpected sentiment and inquisitive meditation. Each photograph not only captioned, but also catalogued alpha-numerically, suggesting the work may be that of a professional. Almost half of the album is devoted to Venezuela with two views of Colón, one view of cocoa and tobacco export center La Guaira and its lush hills in the background, two more of a rail journey through the hills to Caracas and five photographs of Caracas. The latter features the Estadio Olímpico and the grand marble fountain in the courtyard of the Palacio Federal Legislativo. An uncommon highlight of this album are the eight photographs of Curaçao Island, showcasing its historic charm. The Queen Emma swinging bridge is shown when motor traffic was still permitted to cross it. A single sailboat cruises near it in another view. Beautiful street views also illustrate a traditional outdoor produce market, pristine quaint neighbourhoods, and a busy street with the Julius Penha & Sons building on the corner. In Nassau local residents and visitors are seen in most of the eight views, especially charming are the young boys diving in the harbour, school age children sitting on mud wall which surrounds an old cathedral, and others sharing the tranquility of Paradise Beach alongside foreign visitors. He also photographs Bay Street, the British Colonial Hilton Nassau hotel, and woven hats and accessories being sold at a thatch-roofed market. Havana, Cuba, also appears in eight photographs which mainly highlight ancient and colonial architecture, with an especially striking view the Morro Castle (Tres Reyes Magos del Morro) which once guarded the entrance to Havana Bay. A busy street view props a large advertisement for Libreria Cervantes, a famous and longstanding Havana bookstore (now an antiquarian bookseller). Finally, Panama is seen in six views, two of these showing the ruins of Panamá Viejo (Old Panama City), two of Panama City, one showing the Canal, and one of a group of ladies in traditional dance costume. RMS Mauretania of the Cunard White Star Line was built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, England, and made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on 17 June 1939. During the Second World War she travelled 540,000 miles (870,000 km) and carried over 340,000 troops. From 1947 to 1957 she served on the Southampton to New York route during the summer months and operated on cruises from New York during the winter months. By 1962, however, she was facing competition from more modern and faster vessels. After remodelling her passenger accommodations in March 1963 she began a new Mediterranean service calling at New York, Cannes, Genoa and Naples. Within a year or less her itinerary was again modified and from 1964 to September 1965 she was employed cruising from New York to the West Indies. Mauretania?'s final voyage left New York on 15 September 1965, returning to Southampton, on 10 October 1965 having already been sold to the British Iron & Steel Corporation, She was subsequently broken up at Ward's shipbreaking yard in Inverkeithing, Scotland. Queen Emma Bridge: Originally built in 1888 by American entrepreneur and US Consul, Leonard B. Smith, the pontoon bridge crosses St. Anna Bay and connects the Punda and Otrobanda quarters of the capital city, Willemstad. Originally a toll bridge, between 1901 and 1934 pedestrians with shoes were charged 2 NAf. cents to cross, while the toll was waived for those without shoes. Motorized traffic was allowed to cross her until 1974. Libreria Cervantes Bookshop in Havana: Ricardo Veloso's full name was Ricardo Veloso Guerra and he founded Libreria Cervantes in 1910. Eventually boasting the largest inventory of books in Havana, Libreria Cervantes also distinguished itself as the first bookstore in the city to sell books on credit. Veloso (Guerra is dropped in most references) also edited and published books for Cervantes. In 1926, Veloso merged his company with Cultural S.A. and they expanded their business in Cuba as well as abroad. In the process, they assumed a prominent role in Havana's literary and cultural circles. . Very Good.

        Where the Wild Things Are

New York: Harper & Row,, 1963. Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. With the Sendak designed dust jacket. Illustrated by Sendak. Occasional spotting to pages, small pencil notes to two pages, which list the names of the Wild Things, light rubbing to corners, in the dust jacket with toning to white areas, light spotting along rear panel edges, short closed tears to front edges, lower corner to front flap clipped, 3.95 price still intact at upper portion. A very good copy. First edition, first printing, first issue. There seem to be multiple issues of the first printing of this elusive and important book. Variations in price occur throughout the later states but have no bearing on the status of the true first issue. Primacy is established through the text of the blurb which, as in the present copy, makes no mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication. The winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust wrapper to include the achievement. Copies therefore with the original blurb are rare and are indubitably the earliest.

MONUMENT. A Lithograph. ARTIST PROOF Signed 1963

n.p.: Associated American Artists, 1963. First edition. Lithograph. Fine. Joseph Hirsch. Image measures approx 14 1/8 X 22 1/2 inches, overall (framed under glass) 31 1/4 x 26 inches. This copy is marked "Artist Proof, '63" and signed by the artist in pencil. There was an edition of 50 signed. Printed by Lucien Detruit, in Paris, on Arches paper. At seventeen, Hirsch was given a four-year scholarship to the Pennysylvania Museum School of Industrial Art by the city of Philadelphia winning awards in drawing and illustration, and he also studied with George Luks in New York. From Luks he developed a strong feeling for social realism and commentary. Hirsch's images are strong, uncluttered, and deal with living realities in urban situations, showing the tender and touch moments of the ordinary man in a compassionate and realistic manner. Hirsch's drawing of Willy Loman, slouched with face unseen, carrying his salesman's suitcases, used on the dust jacket of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (as well as the poster for the play), is a classic image that powerfully depicts much about humanity. It has been said that this image "Monument" is an image worthy to commemorate heroes from 9/11, as it shows a man on his hands and knees, shoeless, covered in dirt and soot, stunned but undaunted.

Book of the Hopi [Uncorrected Proof Copy]

Viking, NY 1963 - The uncorrected proof copy in comb-bound printed cardstock covers of this landmark volume relating the worldview of the Hopis, as compiled by Waters from the tales of thirty Hopi elders. A matter of some controversy in later years -- some people questioned the authenticity of the material or the qualifications of those who provided it -- this book nonetheless was profoundly influential in the Sixties, as another of the seminal volumes bringing some version of a Native American perspective and ethos to the mainstream society: this was a counterculture classic and a staple on college campuses in the late Sixties and early Seventies, thus contributing to the general push toward a more multicultural society. Waters' father was reportedly part Cheyenne, and Waters was an ardent admirer of, and advocate for, the values of Native American culture. A bit of corner creasing and dust soiling to covers; near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

In June 1945, President Harry S. Truman?s wisdom, dedication and strength rallied the San Francisco Conference for chartering the United Nations with this prayer: ?Let us not fail to grasp this supreme chance to establish a world-wide rule of reason ?" to create an enduring peace under the guidance of God.??On June 29, 1945, after returning from San Francisco, President Truman, at his temporary suite atop the Hotel Muehlebach, had met with former Kansas Governor and 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon to discuss bipartisan support for prompt ratification of the Charter.
