        On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1963. Octavo. Original quarter vellum-backed black cloth, titles to spine gilt, ski track decoration to front board in white, top edge gilt. With the original clear plastic jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Colour frontispiece portrait of Ian Fleming. A superb copy. First edition, signed limited issue. Number 35 of 250 copies signed by the author, with an additional 35 unnumbered copies marked "Presentation".       Paris: Imprimerie Lacourière et Frélaut, 1963-65. No. 33 OF 45 COPIES (plus 10 author's copies) n. Hardcover. A Notable Multi-National Collaboration Featuring aMemorable Binding of Pearls, Aluminum, and Various Urban Elements. mm (). [4] leaves of text (including colophon) followed by plates. No. 33 OF 45 COPIES (plus 10 author's copies). REMARKABLE CONTEMPORARY ANTHRACITE CALF by J.-P. MIGUET (stamp-signed on front turn-in, dated on rear turn-in), BOTH COVERS OCCUPIED WITH A LARGE CHISELED, PUNCHED, AND CHASED ALUMINUM PLATE DESIGNED BY AGUSTIN FERNANDEZ (front cover with small etched signature of Fernandez and date "[19]65" at bottom) and incorporating pearls, wire, staples, brads, and nails; smooth spine with silver titling, silver paper endleaves . In (expertly repaired) original calf-backed cloth clamshell box. Seven signed and dated aquatint etchings by Fernandez (some with relief embossing) and SEVEN SIGNED AND DATED ORIGINAL COLLAGES made from a second suite of etchings, the collages incorporating felt, wire, small electronic parts, cork, foil, netting, beads, (burnt) match sticks, metal rings, and fine tissue. Colophon with signatures of Bosquet and Fernandez. A small group of tiny dents to spine, otherwise in virtually mint condition. An in-your-face Surrealistic showpiece as dramatic as it is imaginative, this is one of several partnerships between Cuban artist Agustin Fernandez, Ukrainian-born French poet Alain Bosquet, and French binder Jean-Paul Miguet, and it stands out as almost certainly their greatest achievement. Although its text is very short, Bosquet's "Letter to a Knee" is profound, as it reflects on the possibilities and limitations of life and on the inevitable deterioration that comes with age. As the text notes, skin and bone both limit and empower the knee, and the present impressive object serves as a kind of visual reinforcement of this theme: the various objects added to make the collages both enhance and conceal the etchings underneath, and the protective binding (skin, if you will) does the same two things in relation to the contents. Born Anatole Bisk, Bosquet (1919-98) is perhaps the best known of our three collaborators, and his life was as interesting as his poetry. A citizen of the world, he was born in Russia, educated in Belgium and France, and fought in the U.S. Army in World War II, landing at Normandy. He was among the first troops to enter and liberate Buchenwald concentration camp. His literary career started to take off in 1951, when he moved to Paris and worked at "Combat" with Albert Camus, while serving as a regular contributor to "Le Monde," "Figaro," and "La Nouvelle Revue Française." He later taught at Brandeis, the University of Wisconsin, and the Université de Lyon, and he won numerous prizes for his poetry, including the Grand Prix de la Poésie de l'Académie Française (1967) and the Prix Goncourt de la Poésie (1987). The art of Agustin Fernandez (1928-2008) provides an appropriate complement to Bosquet's wide-ranging mind. Fernandez had a similarly full, creative, and productive life. Born and raised in Cuba, he studied in Havana, and then journeyed to New York, Paris, and Madrid, training with renowned artists in multiple media and developing a unique style. "Inspired by the demands of survival in an urban environment and the mundane objects that clutter its alleys and streets," this style often reveals the contrast between human and machine, the organic and inorganic, and the real and imagined. (Agustin Fernandez Foundation website) It is not difficult to see much of this reflected in the illustrations and the binding design here. Finally, everything is quietly wrapped up in elegant calf by the master binder J.-P. Miguet (b. 1925). It's really Miguet and the printers at Lacourière et Frélaut who set up the canvas on which Bosquet and Fernandez shine. The present object is one of the most striking bindings we have ever handled, and it is not surprising that Bassenge thought enough of it to offer it for €60,000 at auction in 2013.

PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS MAP: Pan American Airways System.

      - The Pan Am Systems map - one of the most iconic airline posters of all time, from the golden age of luxury jet travel. This gorgeous poster represents one of the most iconic maps of popular culture. A world map, on a Mercator Projection, it is of a most elegant 1950s design, employing splendid hues of turquoise and emerald (in line with Pan Am’s colours) with relief shown pictorially. Boldly depicting Pan Am to be a truly global force, the globe is traversed by the airline’s routes, in red lines with their respective mileages. Indeed, by 1963, Pan Am served a wide variety of glamorous and exotic destinations, including West Berlin, Istanbul, Tehran, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Delhi, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney. Pan American World Airways, popularly known simply as "Pan Am", was perhaps the most iconic airline of the golden age of commercial air travel. Founded in 1927, it quickly grew into the world’s largest airline and pioneered many regularly scheduled long-haul routes and made many record-breaking flights. Introducing the Boeing 707 in the late 1950s, Pan Am came to lead the way in jet travel. From 1960 to 1965, the company’s revenue doubled and billing itself as the "World's Most Experienced Airline", it carried 6.7 million passengers in 1966, and by 1968, its 150 jets flew to 86 countries on 5 continents over a scheduled route network of 81,410 unduplicated miles (131,000 km). During these golden days, Pan Am was exceedingly profitable and maintained cash reserves of over US$1 billion – an astounding sum for the time. In the age of luxury jet travel, Pan Am’s service was considered to be the gold standard. The airline’s extremely well-trained stewardesses were popularly celebrated in and of themselves for their great style and welcoming demeanor. In 1960, the company completed ‘Worldport’, its iconic terminal at New York’s Idlewyld (later JFK) Airport. In 1963, the Pan Am name dominated the view down New York’s Park Avenue, atop the Pam Am Building (now the Met Life Building), the largest commercial real estate space in America. Pan Am was led from its founding to 1968 by its incomparable CEO, Juan Trippe (1899-1981), who combined a daring yet successful business acumen with a flair for great style. Trippe had an unusual appreciation for great marketing and under his watch Pan Am became one of the world’s most recognized brands, synonymous with glamour and modernity. Pan Am’s marketing budget was perhaps the most coveted prize in the global advertising industry. A big part of Pan Am’s PR strategy rested on its promotional material, which was prominently placed in travel agencies around the world. Editions of the present map were one of the most popular and successful posters the company ever created and were immediately recognizable to millions of people. In the age of Mad Men, the company spent millions on ensuring that its image appeared favourably in popular culture. Pan Am planes appeared prominently in the James Bond movies Dr. No and From Russia with Love and in 1964 The Beatles were photographed stepping off of a Pam Am plane, commencing their ‘British Invasion’ of America. Also from 1964 to 1968, the legendary con artist Frank Abignail, Jr. posed as Pan Am pilot, a story that later popularized by the movie Catch Me if You Can (2002). Editions of the present poster map were first issued in 1956, based on cartography by John Philip and design and artwork by Paul John Brown. The poster was produced in two sizes; the present more manageable size (45.5 x 81 cm) and a gargantuan format almost twice that size, being 82 x 148 cm. Various updated editions were produced until the late 1960s, with the present edition, issued in 1964, showing updates to routes as of January 1, 1963. They graced innumerable travel agency offices and airport lounges around the world, although posters in excellent condition (such as the present example) are today quite scarce. References: Cf.         Dessert plate of the Kennedy couple, by Limoges, made for them to mark the occasion of their celebrated 1963 visit to Paris, where the President famously remarked "I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris!"

France, [May 1963]. 7.5" round. "Jacqueline Kennedy approved Renoir Limoges dessert plate for the First Couple's 1963 Paris visit. President John F. and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy visited Paris in May 1963. Gifts were prepared and given to mark the occasion. The First Lady received a set of Limoges china with hand-painted floral designs after paintings by Pierre Auguste Renoir (a known ceramist) - receiving three ""specimen"" or example plates from the service for approval. The set included dinner, salad and dessert plates ranging in size from 7.5"" to 9.5"". They are ""certified"" as being number one out of an edition of one hundred. According to the agent for this Limoges china, the plates were made by George Boyer of Limoges, and to be marketed by the Galerie Urban in Paris; however, the examples were not produced for the general public, making the plates from this set most likely unique. The plate is inscribed on the verso: ""Specimen Du Service Offert a Mme. Jacqueline Kennedy en Mai 1963"" (Example of the service offered to Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy in May 1963). Excellent, unused condition."

The Universal Unified Field Law and The Law of Universal Creation of Mass-Energy

Universal Science Foundation, Phoenix, AZ 1963 - Signed 281 pages. Author signed and inscribed this copy to John Dumont upon front free endpaper. "In this presentation, it will be shown that all components within every system, including all primary measurable forms of mass-energy and all complex components derived therefrom, function perpetually in accordance with the laws of motion in absolute freely-moving-body environments. It will also be shown that the bonding forces of any structural frame of any particle are nothing more and nothing less than the stability that results from pure vector mechanics in equilibria, functioning as freely-moving, composite frames, and that the stability is conserved through the instant mutual exchange of kinetic-energy-momenta. Therefore, all events should be considered purely as mechanical phenomena, and should never be considered as general or abstract phenomena." - from Introduction. Includes over a dozen black and white figures. Unmarked. Moderate wear. Binding intact. Gilt lettering upon navy backstrip and front board moderately rubbed but remains legible. A sound copy.         The Centaur

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1963. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with a few very tiny tears. Winner of the National Book Award. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, this ancient text with affection and esteem, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association and a nicer than usual copy. .
