        A Wrinkle In Time

London: Constable Young Books, 1963. First British edition of the author's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some small chips to the spine. Uncommon signed. A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. The story revolves around a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow).

The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, with Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket, as Issued. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The true 1st Edition, Allen and Unwin 1963 Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The gilt is still bright, without any rubs or tarnishing. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, with an original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, a neat gift inscription to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship, no other names or markings in any of the books. The spine of The Return has a few rub marks, the gilt title, author and publisher still clean and bright. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The spines of the books are a matching black color, with the Two Towers being slightly lighter in color, as if often the case. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has a couple of minor bumps to the corners, and a little rubbing to the edges, no color loss to speak of. Clean and bright, without any corner splits, a lovely case that is one of the tighter fitting ones I've run across. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets were produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, but is whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce set and the orignal publishers slipcase illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued.

Selden Society. Annual Series. Vols. 1-80 (1887-1963)

1963 - The First 76 years of the Selden Society Year Books Selden Society. Annual Series. Vols. 1 to 80 (1887-1963). London: Selden Society, 1887-1963. Original blue gilt stamped cloth, light shelfwear. Ex-library with location labels at foot of spines and stamps, else a very good set. Interiors otherwise clean. Reprint Price USD 7,512. * A detailed list of the contents of each volume is available. The Selden Society's principal achievement has been the publication of its annual series, which includes essential source materials of the common law, including law reports dating back to the Middle Ages (known as the Year Books), plea rolls and courts' records, eyre rolls of itinerant justices, select leading cases in the courts of King's Bench, Chancery, Star Chamber, Admiralty, Requests, Exchequer Chamber, and Privy Council; and in local, manorial, ecclesiastical, and mercantile courts. Select charters of trading companies, borough customs, and records of public works show the development of business enterprise and local government. Professional literature, early treatises, formularies, judges' notebooks, and lecturers' readings on statutes show the development of the legal profession, early legal education, the inns of court, and their teaching methods. The publication of English legal materials is an unfinished project! The Selden Society edits, translates, and publishes one volume each year which often contains materials appearing for the first time in print. The contents of each volume are explained and discussed in its introduction; and these introductions therefore represent much of the research and scholarship that has been devoted over the past hundred years to the development of the common law and its institutions.         Luchino Visconti and Rina Morelli on the set of "Il gattopardo" ["The Leopard"]

Paris: Parimage, 1963. Original single weight photograph from the 1963 film. A shot of Visconti working with an actress Rina Morelli on the set, the former with a bellows and the latter with a parasol. With remarkable provenance as to photograph's vintage on the verso: a rubber-stamped coat of arms made for the film, the Pathé-Titanus productions stamp (the film was an Italy-France co-production), and a stamp for Parimage, a French press agency. A lovely, candid moment from Visconti's classic homage to the Sicilian aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century. Certainly, too, the apex of Claudia Cardinale's work in auteur cinema. 9 x 7 inches.         MAN RAY: SELF PORTRAIT - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO EMERSON AND DINA WOELFFER

An Atlantic Monthly Press Book / Little, Brown & Company, New York 1963 - 402pp, 32 b&w illustrations. "Self Portrait" is Man Ray's 1963 tell-all autobiography that chronicles the artist's odyssey from his modest beginnings as Emmanuel Radnitzky from Ridgefield, New Jersey to becoming the toast of the Dada, Surrealist, Cinema, Fashion, and Literary sets in New York, Paris and Hollywood. A most presentable example of the 1963 first Little, Brown & Company printing additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "for Emerson and Dina / Man Ray / 1966" in black ink on the title page showing some light wear and soiling along with mild dog-earing to the upper foredge corners of a few pages whose fragile dust jacket is a bit worn and rubbed on the spine and rear panel. The inscription is to Man Ray's friend, the late, great Los Angeles artist, collector, and educator Emerson Woelffer (and his wife Dina) from whose estate we acquired this directly. The 1966 date corresponds to the artist's return to Los Angeles to attend the comprehensive Man Ray retrospective exhibition held at the County Museum of Art, and produce a series of prints at Gemini G.E.L. It bears Woelffer's embossed red ownership label and handwritten date "July 31-64" on the front pastedown.         Cat's Cradle

New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1963. First edition. [iv], 233, [1] pp. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth and blue paper boards. Near fine in lightly rubbed and worn dust-jacket, lower third of front jacket panel with two closed tears and creases. First edition. [iv], 233, [1] pp. 8vo. One of Vonnegut's most beloved novels, ranking alongside Slaughterhouse Five and Breakfast of Champions. This was Vonnegut's fourth novel and concerns the development of ice-nine a substance that turns water into a solid at room temperature. Although addressing concerns of technology, it's perhaps better known as a satire of religion. Entirely in keeping with the novel's spirit, The University of Chicago, which had rejected Vonnegut's 1947 thesis for a Masters of Anthropology, accepted this work for the degree in 1971. It was also nominated for the 1964 Hugo award for best novel.

Basil Seal Rides Again or The Rake's Regress. Frontispiece by Kathleen Hale.

London: Chapman & Hall, 1963 - Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to upper board gilt, blue endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the acetate dust jacket. Housed in a blue cloth solander box with a brown morocco label to spine. Spine sunned, light foxing to front pastedown. An excellent copy in a stained and scuffed jacket with a few small chips to extremities and a couple of closed tears to rear panel. Colour frontispiece by Kathleen Hale. First edition, first impression. One of a limited edition of 750 numbered copies, this an out of series presentation copy to Robert Laycock and his wife Angela, inscribed by the author on the limitation leaf: "for Bob with love to Angie from Evelyn". Robert Laycock (1907–1968) was a British army officer most remembered for his service with the British Commandos during the Second World War. "An ideal officer for special service employment, Laycock was promoted lieutenant-colonel, and early in 1941 he sailed for the Middle East in command of 'Layforce', an enlarged battalion of five commandos. The little force carried out several minor but hazardous tasks with varying success until it was allotted the daunting mission of rearguard action in the British defence of Crete. Throughout this action (May–June 1941) Laycock's personal assistant was Captain Evelyn Waugh. The experience of the British disaster in Crete is reflected in Waugh's novel Officers and Gentlemen (1955). Laycock and Waugh were in the last British ship to leave the island" (ODNB). With Laycock's bookplate to front pastedown. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Two Original Gelatin Silver Prints of Photographs of Zulu Children in a Missionary Hospital]

[Np: The Photographer, 1963. Two original glossy double-weight gelatin silver prints from negatives, 11 x 14" (inclusive of margins). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. Original prints of two photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa attendant to the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order, and his interest in the Zulu people lead to additional photographs not directly associated with the film, such as these. The present images are two variants of the same situation, a large gathering of Zulu children, some seated, some standing, with a Caucasian nun, in habit, caring for one of the youngest of the children. The images are denoted numbers 317 and 410 in the sequence, and are captioned in pencil: "At a missionary hospital in Zululand" and "Time for milk at a missionary hospital in Zululand." Although this project is not as widely known as Karsh's formal portraiture, examples of the resulting images have featured prominently in both museum and print retrospectives of his career.

Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image is a fine character portrait of Ulla Jacobsen, in her role as Margareta Witt. The image is identified as "No. 8-40" in the series. Although this project is not as widely known as Karsh's formal portraiture, examples of the resulting images have featured prominently in both museum and print retrospectives of his career.

Without Prejudice. One Hundred Letters from Frederick William Rolfe "Baron Corvo" to John Lane. Edited with an Introduction by Cecil Woolf and Privately Printed for Allen Lane

[Westerham Press, Kent] Christmas 1963 - Title printed in red and black, four illustrations and two facsimiles of letters. 8vo. [252 x 160 x 15 mm]. [5]ff, 9-119, [1] pp. Bound by Roger Powell in green goatskin, the covers with the title lettered in gilt in five lines at the head, the spine with a single band towards the head and lettered downwards in gilt, lemon and light blue endleaves, top edge gilt, others uncut. Privately printed and limited to 600 copies. The book was designed by Hans Schmoller. The binding is unsigned and undated but it came from the personal collection of Roger Powell, and was sold with the contents of his bindery and his books at Bonhams, Knowle, 23/11/2005 as part of lot 501. Powell held on to a number of his own bindings, some of which he had previously gifted to family members. The binding has the outwards appearance of classic Powell binding, with the decoration confined to hand lettering. However, it does not open freely and the endleaves have partly lifted from the inside of the covers. It may have been an experimental binding (I have not seen these endleaves used again) or it could have been forwarded by one of Powell's assistants. [Attributes: First Edition]
