Gutter Girls [The Yellow Teddybears; The Yellow Golliwog] (Original screenplay, director Robert Hartford-Davis' working copy)

London: Tekli Film Productions / Animated Motion Pictures, 1963. Final shooting script for the 1963 film, "The Yellow Teddybears," here under both that title and the film's working title, "The Yellow Golliwog," and released in the US as "Gutter Girls." Directed by Robert Hartford-Davis and written for the screen by Donald and Derek Ford. Director Robert Hartford-Davis' working copy, with his holograph ink and penciled notations, deletions, and drawings throughout. Though instantly packaged at the time (and indeed, today) as a sexy exploitation film, "The Yellow Teddybears" is very much a pre-"Swinging London" message picture, about a group of girls at a girls' boarding school who wear a small yellow teddy bear on their lapels to indicate they have lost their virginity. Red titled wrappers with title window, single call sheet dated April 5, 1963, both in a custom green cloth spring back binder with the director's initials ("RHD"), the film's final title ("The Yellow Teddybears") and the production company ("Tekli Film Productions Ltd") embossed in yellow on the front board. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Donald and Derek Ford, the two production companies (Tekli and Animated Motion Pictures), noted as FINAL, and dated February 1963. 85 leaves, mimeograph, with pink and goldenrod revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound with three silver brads. Binder Near Fine.

        SECONDS .

Pantheon Books A Division of Random House [1963], New York - Octavo, cloth-backed boards. The story of a man caught up by a nameless organization that uses advanced managerial and technological methods to achieve its singular aim -- lifting the moral and physical barriers to personal liberty and self-indulgence. Brilliantly filmed by John Frankenheimer with Rock Hudson as the hapless victim of a shadowy organization which ultimately kills him and recycles his body parts. "Like David Ely's slender, nightmarish novel, SECONDS has a thinly science-fictional rationale, but it is actually an exercise in Kafkaesque horror . Outstandingly photographed by James Wong Howe, extremely well played by the whole cast (the choice of Hudson as every man's self-image is inspired), and directed with the imaginative flair John Frankenheimer brought to The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, and 99 and 44/100% Dead, SECONDS is perhaps the scariest movie of the 1960s." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 374. Reginald 37728. Hubin (1994), p. 266. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket with two light blue horizontal lines on the verso of the jacket (offset from a previous jacket protector) with slight bleed through at jacket flaps. A sharp copy.         Hallelujah the Hills with Scorpio Rising (Promotional broadside)

Los Angeles, 1963. Promotional broadside, designed to resemble an oversized postcard, for the Los Angeles premiere of Adolfas Mekas' feature film debut, "Hallelujah the Hills," along with the debut of Kenneth Anger's short film, "Scorpio Rising." Mekas was the brother of Jonas Mekas, a film critic, filmmaker, and essentially father figure of the avant-garde New American Cinema of the 1960s, which in turn spawned the underground film movement that continued into the 1970s. "Hallelujah the Hills," a surreal comedy satirizing politics, American pop culture, religion, and sexual mores, was the first feature film in that movement. 11.5 x 9.25 inches, black and white type and illustrations on brown card stock, printed on recto only. Slight toning at the edges, brief creasing to one corner, else Near Fine.

My Fair Lady (Original screenplay for the 1964 film)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1963. Revised Estimating Script for the 1964 film. Brief notation in holograph ink on one page. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1912 play, "Pygmalion," at one time the longest-running Broadway musical (as "My Fair Lady"). Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) meets linguistic expert Henry Higgins (Harrison), and, after a tirade against "verbal class distinction," Higgins tells his companion that he could transform Eliza into a proper lady, simply by teaching her proper English. Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and nominated for another four. Cukor, who was fired from working on the 1939 film "Gone With the Wind" due to his homosexuality (Clark Gable proclaimed "I won't be direct by a fairy!"), earned an Academy Award for his direction. Hepburn's musical sequences were dubbed by Marni Nixon. Tan titled wrappers, noted as ESTIMATING SCRIPT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 63, dated March 15, 1963. Distribution page present, with receipt intact, dated 3/15/63. Title page present, dated 3/15/63, with credits for screenwriter-playwright Lerner, composer Frederick Loewe, and playwright Shaw. 141 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 138. Mimeograph on yellow stock, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 5/20/63. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with two gold brads.

Lithograph text and illustration printed recto and verso throughout: text and illustration after Dubuffet's original manuscript, final verso with illustration only, achevé d'imprimer and justification to inner rear wrapper. Original publisher's printed wrappers with monochrome illustrations to front and rear covers, title to front cover. From the edition of 300 unnumbered copies. "Texte autographe de Jean Dubuffet calligraphié et illustré à l'encre de Chine, reporté photographiquement sur zinc, imprimé par Serge Lozingot sur les presses de l'auteur en lithographie, Paris, été 1963." [Webel II, 972 - 990, see pp. 60 - 63]. In fine condition with scattered light foxing. This copy signed and inscribed to Henri Pol Bouché, member of the so-called "Collège de Pataphysique," translator of the writings of Swiss Art Brut artist Adolf Wölfi: "pour la trémolation joyeuse de Henri Pol Bouché / Jean Dubuffet," adding a small design beneath his signature. A remarkable item from the influential French artist whose idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so called "Art Brut" ("Raw Art" or "Low Art") and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.

        6 Autograph letters partly signed.

Philadelphia, New York, , October-November 1963 - 19 pages. 4to and 9 pages. 8vo. On the letterhead of American Hotels. 5 envelopes. Intéressante correspondance pendant sa tournée de 1963 aux U.S.A., mentionnant les décès de Piaf et de Cocteau, et l'assassinat de J. F. Kennedy.New York (The New York Hilton) 11 and 12 October. New York (Essex House) 24 novembre. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        LEAVING CHEYENNE

New York Harper and Row 1963 - First Edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, LARRY MCMURTRY. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth, in the original dustjacket. 298pp. A fine copy in like dustjacket, very fresh and attractive. SIGNED COPY OF LARRY MCMURTRY’S SECOND BOOK, every bit as hard to find in collectable condition as his first, HORSEMAN, PASS BY. This copy has been signed boldly on the free-fly by McMurtry in blue ink. The jacket is in what is sometimes called "Second State", which is actually the same printing as the "first" but with the price clipped off by the publisher and replaced by a small sticker (in some cases a stamp) at $4.95. This was all done prior to the book’s original release date, thus only a very small number of copies can be found with the original $4.50 price intact. "Leaving Cheyenne traces the lives of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Tragic circumstances mark the trail but McMurtry's style never turns melodramatic or sentimental." - modern editorial review. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Where The Wild Things Are

New York: Harper & Row, 1963. First edition of Sendak's celebrated and controversial picture book. His fable of rebellion and escape was criticized upon publication as too confusing and scary for children, but Where The Wild Things Are appealed to its audience on a primal level, and won the Caldecott Medal in 1964. Fifty years later, it remains a bestseller, and Sendak's iconic illustrations are part of the imaginary landscape of American childhood. "'And now,' cried Max, 'let the wild rumpus start!'" This copy has all first edition points: the publisher's price of $3.50, the correct code on the front flap, and jacket copy with no mention of the Caldecott Medal or the New York Times Best Illustrated Award. It was customary for bookstores to apply Caldecott stickers to their copies of the winning books each year; later printings would have the medal embossed on the front panel of the jacket. This copy once had the medal affixed as a sticker, underscoring its priority. A very good copy of one of the greatest children's books. Oblong quarto, original grey cloth over paper pictorial boards, patterned endpapers, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket. Light soiling to jacket, inobtrusive early tape repairs, small chip to head of spine. Faint trace of Caldecott sticker to front panel.

A very dramatic edition of Byron's poem with spectacular reproductions of the 18th century copperplate engravings. In the bibliography the Allen's wrote "A real problem occurred when innocent collectors received this 14 by 20 inch volume. No doubt many of them were 'shelved' under a bed; not an appropriate place for Byron". With the prospectus inserted loose. Booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson, Jr

1963 - (KENNEDY, Jacqueline) SHAW, Mark. Gelatin silver print. New York: Mark Shaw, 1963. Black-and-white photographic print, measuring 10-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches, handsomely window matted and framed, entire piece measures 20 by 20 inches. $6200.Vintage photographic print, taken at the White House, depicting Jackie Kennedy sitting on the floor holding John Jr. and Caroline in her lap. Bears Shaw’s own studio stamp and “Private Print” on verso.Photographed early in Kennedy’s presidency, this image was evidently printed by photographer Mark Shaw in 1963, most likely in preparation for his book, The John F. Kennedys. The gelatin silver print shows Jackie Kennedy gently smiling while sitting on the floor of the White House nursery, dressed in a pale suit with her legs tucked under her, holding a laughing John Jr. in her lap and tucking Caroline against her side. “Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady’s photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw’s pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election. ‘They really should be in the National Gallery!’ she enthused… Shaw was very much a part of Camelot and his most famous still photography is associated with that period” (Sullivan, 492). Shaw began his career as a fashion photographer for publications including Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and LIFE Magazine. His talent for discovering new designers and trends caught the eye of Jackie Kennedy, who was growing increasingly visible as the wife of a senator and who was already on her way to becoming a style icon. In 1959, seeking to bolster JFK’s presidential campaign, the Kennedys agreed to let Shaw have unrestricted access to their home and lives in order to do a photo-essay for LIFE called A Frontrunner’s Wife. Shaw proved unintrusive, managing to take extraordinary candid shots that Jackie compared to the work of Caravaggio. Shaw quickly became a family friend and was a frequent guest in the Kennedy home. Allowed complete access to the family, Shaw began to take photographs of the Kennedys in Georgetown and in Washington; on vacation in Hyannis Port and elsewhere; and even in the White House once JFK was elected President. In 1964, the year after this print was produced, the image appeared as a half-tone in The John F. Kennedys, a photobook that Shaw compiled just after JFK’s assassination for Farrar, Straus as a tribute to the family he had grown to love. After JFK died, Shaw became quite protective of the Kennedy prints and put together just five complete albums of the photographs used in the books to be given to four members of the Kennedy family and Dr. Max Jacobson, Kennedy’s personal physician. As Shaw died unexpectedly in 1969 at the age of 47, Kennedy prints bearing his studio stamps are quite rare. Shaw studio stamp dated 1963 and “Private Print” stamp on verso. Pencil number on verso.A beautiful print. Beautifully matted and framed. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1963., 1963. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION, COPY NUMBER 1 of only 250 copies. IAN FLEMING'S OWN COPY. Colour frontispiece of the author by Charles Amherst Villiers. Publisher's quarter vellum over black cloth. Gilt titles to spine. In original clear plastic wrapper. A near fine copy, slightly dusty and soiled, housed in a leather-spined clamshell box. The only Signed Limited Edition of an Ian Fleming book. The first numbered copy, being one of the author's personal copies (he received the first ten). This copy differs to all others in that the limitation number is written out as 'ONE' rather that the numeral, which followed for every other example. Published in 1963, this is the second part of a collection of James Bond books that has become known as the 'Blofeld' trilogy, sitting between Thunderball (1961) and You Only Live Twice (1964). The title was filmed by Eon Productions in 1969, starring George Lazenby as 007, Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Directed by Peter Hunt, with a terrific storyline and slick script from the ever-reliable screenwriter Richard Maibaum, O.H.M.S.S. features superb action, spectacular locations, a marvelous John Barry score, and, in Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo (aka Tracy, aka Mrs James Bond), probably the greatest Bond Girl of all time. The movie, unlike most in the series, was faithful to the original Ian Fleming novel and is a fine thriller; one of the grittiest movies of the series. Gilbert A11a.

1963 VON RYAN'S EXPRESS DRAFT SCREENPLAY - DARRYL ZANUCK'S COPY w/ MANY NOTES & EDITS Plus 2 LETTERS from ZANUCK re: BAD SCRIPT, NEEDS MY HELP

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX 1963. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX : , 1963. VON RYAN'S EXPRESS - FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY - DARRYL ZANUCK'S PERSONAL COPY with HIS NOTES and EDITS THROUGHOUT, plus TWO LONG, RELEVANT LETTERS from DARRYL ZANUCK to his son RICHARD ZANUCK regarding his many concerns about the SCRIPT. Darryl Zanuck's large initials are on the front cover. Bound in blue paper covers with the Twentieth Century Fox Film logo and name at the bottom of the front cover, and with "Von Ryan's Express", "July 18, 1963", and "First Draft Screenplay", all printed on the front cover. The spine covering is split and tattered, but the printed: "Von Ryan's Express - July 18, 1963" is still legible. The title page has the printed information: "Von Ryan's Express / Screenplay by David Westheimer and Saul David / Based on the Novel by David Westheimer / First Draft Screenplay / July 18, 1963". Printed on light-green tinted paper, with many blue revision pages dated 7/23/63, 7/24/63 and 7/31/63. Zanuck's edit marks and notes are found here and there on both the light-green pages and on the blue revision pages. 172 pages, plus a few additional revision pages (e.g. "141" followed by "141A"). Pages are printed on 8.5x11" paper, printed on one side only. The covers are somewhat larger, overhanging the inner pages by 1/2" at the front edge and 1/4" at the top and bottom edges. The screenplay is three hole punched and bound with three brass brads. Darryl Zanuck was head of Twentieth Century Fox, the studio producing Von Ryan's Express. ZANUCK HATED THE SCRIPT as it stood in this first draft. His numerous notes on the inside front cover, title page, and first page of the screenplay are full of comments such as: "Basic plot was exciting, original - but it is now told devoid of characters or logic or humor..." Zanuck also made various notes, marks, suggestions and edits here and there throughout the rest of the script, but his most extensive comments are on the first few pages. This FIRST DRAFT has RYAN staying alive at the end of the film. In the final version RYAN DIES. There are MANY other changes between this draft and the final version. Neither of the writers of this first draft are listed as writers on the final script, though David Westheimer is still credited for writing the novel. PLEASE NOTE: ALSO INCLUDED ARE TWO LONG, IMPORTANT, RELATED LETTERS BY DARRYL ZANUCK (Head of Twentieth-Century Fox Corporation) TO HIS SON, RICHARD ZANUCK (who he made head of film production). The letters are both carbon copies (presumably Zanuck's copies) on onion skin paper, typed by his Secretary. The letters are dated August 13 and August 23, 1963. These carbon copies of the sent letters are not signed. In the first letter, Darryl Zanuck is VERY upset about the quality of the screenplay; and by default he is upset with his son, the Studio's head of Production, for allowing the screenplay to be so bad. The letter is 7 pages long. "What started like a marvellous and original adventure has become in screenplay an amateurish delivery of hokum melodrama with obvious characters and embarrassing attempts at humor." "I have detailed notes on an entirely new opening and on innumerable changes..." In the second letter, dated August 23, D. Zanuck details the changes that he thinks will improve the film. The letter is 14 pages long. CONDITION: The SCREENPLAY covers are tattered along the edges where they overhang the inner pages, tattered at the spine, have some creases, are toned, and have a coffee cup ring stain (probably Zanuck's cup!). The inner pages are all in VERY GOOD condition, some corner creases, some edge toning, overall still bright and clean. THE TYPED CARBON LETTERS have some stiff creases, toning to the margins, paper clip marks, and signs of general handling, but are still bright and clear. Together, this first draft screenplay and associated letters show the Zanucks, father and son, at loggerheads. Was this the beginning of what ended with Richard Zanuck taking over the studio and kicking his father out in 1969? Good
