        Thrilling Cities.

Jonathan Cape, London, 1963, 1963. First Impression, First State. DEDICATION COPY, signed by the author. Pp.223. Publisher's cloth-backed marbled paper over boards, titled in gilt to the spine, black endpapers, top edge stained black. With the pictorial dust-jacket designed by Paul Davis. Illustrated with photographic plates, and with erratum slip tipped in at page 223. Boards lightly rubbed and bumped at extremities; a very good copy, housed in a black quarter morocco clamshell box made by The Chelsea Bindery. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, To / "a man called 'CD' "/ from / Ian. / (underscore). The printed author's note reads "Nothing remains but to dedicate this biased, cranky but at least zestful hotchpotch to my friends and colleagues on The Sunday Times in London and abroad, and particularly to a man called 'CD', who pulled the trigger". Sir Charles Denis Hamilton was a close friend and colleague of Ian Fleming, a director of Kemsley Newspapers and editor of the Sunday Times. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by Hamilton with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and back home via the major US cities. The material he gathered for this book also furnished much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. Gilbert A16a (1.1), see also pages 479 and 644.

        C: A Journal of Poetry. Vol. 1 No. 4

New York: Lorenz Gude & Ted Berrigan. 1963. The fourth issue of this mimeographed poetry journal, this issue being devoted to the work of poet Edwin Denby, with contributions by him as well as pieces about his work by Berrigan, Frank O'Hara and John Wieners. It is most famous at this point for the cover, which "was designed by Andy Warhol from photographs of poets Edwin Denby and Gerard Malanga." Warhol took a number of Polaroid photographs of Denby and Malanga and then created a silk screen from them for the covers. The clarity and resolution of the images vary from copy to copy of the production, either as a result of the screen getting clogged by re-use or as a result of deliberate manipulation by Warhol; in this copy, the images on the front are clearly two individuals but the resolution is limited and the image presents almost as an abstraction; the rear cover, which is a shot of the two poets kissing, is in this copy virtually entirely abstract. An early and important Warhol production: this is the first known instance of Warhol using Polaroid photographs for making silkscreen images, a practice he came back to later and became his standard approach for portraits. Some edge wear to the covers and the spine, and a tear at the base of the spine; overall very good in stapled wrappers. Softcover.

Texas Supplemental Report on the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Serious Wounding of Governor John B. Connally November 22, 1963.

Austin: Self-published, 1963. 1st ed., 1963. 8vo. 20 pp. printed rectos only. Original white cloth printed in black. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "To Bert Thompson — My good friend! Waggoner 12-15-64." This book is the summary written by the Texas Attorney General, Waggoner Carr, about the state of Texas' independent investigation into the assassination of JFK and wounding of Connally. Laid into the rear (originally stapled in) is a TLS, folded in half, from Carr to Thompson on Carr's official State of Texas letterhead and dated December 18, 1964: "Dear Bert: I thought you might like to have a permanently bound copy of the Texas Supplemental Report on the assassination of President Kennedy for your library. This is being sent to you with my personal compliments and was not printed at state expense. I continue to be deeply grateful to you for all of the help and assistance you have been to me. . .Yours sincerely, Waggoner" It is not known how many copies of the report Carr had bound but it clearly was not a great number. The covers have light soil and the text block shows evidence of dampness (slight discoloration of paste downs and page waviness). The letter has a stain at the fold which also has a 2" tear. Very good minus. An important association copy of a very scarce Kennedy assassination document.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, with Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket, as Issued. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The true 1st Edition, Allen and Unwin 1963 Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The gilt is still bright, without any rubs or tarnishing. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, with an original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, a neat gift inscription to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship, no other names or markings in any of the books. The spine of The Return has a few rub marks, the gilt title, author and publisher still clean and bright. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The spines of the books are a matching black color, with the Two Towers being slightly lighter in color, as if often the case. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has a couple of minor bumps to the corners, and a little rubbing to the edges, no color loss to speak of. Clean and bright, without any corner splits, a lovely case that is one of the tighter fitting ones I've run across. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets were produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, but is whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce set and the orignal publishers slipcase illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued.

Selden Society. Annual Series. Vols. 1-80 (1887-1963)

1963 - The First 76 years of the Selden Society Year Books Selden Society. Annual Series. Vols. 1 to 80 (1887-1963). London: Selden Society, 1887-1963. Original blue gilt stamped cloth, light shelfwear. Ex-library with location labels at foot of spines and stamps, else a very good set. Interiors otherwise clean. Reprint Price USD 7,512. * A detailed list of the contents of each volume is available. The Selden Society's principal achievement has been the publication of its annual series, which includes essential source materials of the common law, including law reports dating back to the Middle Ages (known as the Year Books), plea rolls and courts' records, eyre rolls of itinerant justices, select leading cases in the courts of King's Bench, Chancery, Star Chamber, Admiralty, Requests, Exchequer Chamber, and Privy Council; and in local, manorial, ecclesiastical, and mercantile courts. Select charters of trading companies, borough customs, and records of public works show the development of business enterprise and local government. Professional literature, early treatises, formularies, judges' notebooks, and lecturers' readings on statutes show the development of the legal profession, early legal education, the inns of court, and their teaching methods. The publication of English legal materials is an unfinished project! The Selden Society edits, translates, and publishes one volume each year which often contains materials appearing for the first time in print. The contents of each volume are explained and discussed in its introduction; and these introductions therefore represent much of the research and scholarship that has been devoted over the past hundred years to the development of the common law and its institutions. He gave an impassioned speech on the plight and anger of the masses in Latin America, and against the policy of the USA.         Luchino Visconti and Rina Morelli on the set of "Il gattopardo" ["The Leopard"]

Paris: Parimage, 1963. Original single weight photograph from the 1963 film. A shot of Visconti working with an actress Rina Morelli on the set, the former with a bellows and the latter with a parasol. With remarkable provenance as to photograph's vintage on the verso: a rubber-stamped coat of arms made for the film, the Pathé-Titanus productions stamp (the film was an Italy-France co-production), and a stamp for Parimage, a French press agency. A lovely, candid moment from Visconti's classic homage to the Sicilian aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century. Certainly, too, the apex of Claudia Cardinale's work in auteur cinema. 9 x 7 inches. Fine.

An Atlantic Monthly Press Book / Little, Brown & Company, New York 1963 - 402pp, 32 b&w illustrations. "Self Portrait" is Man Ray's 1963 tell-all autobiography that chronicles the artist's odyssey from his modest beginnings as Emmanuel Radnitzky from Ridgefield, New Jersey to becoming the toast of the Dada, Surrealist, Cinema, Fashion, and Literary sets in New York, Paris and Hollywood. A most presentable example of the 1963 first Little, Brown & Company printing additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "for Emerson and Dina / Man Ray / 1966" in black ink on the title page showing some light wear and soiling along with mild dog-earing to the upper foredge corners of a few pages whose fragile dust jacket is a bit worn and rubbed on the spine and rear panel. The inscription is to Man Ray's friend, the late, great Los Angeles artist, collector, and educator Emerson Woelffer (and his wife Dina) from whose estate we acquired this directly. The 1966 date corresponds to the artist's return to Los Angeles to attend the comprehensive Man Ray retrospective exhibition held at the County Museum of Art, and produce a series of prints at Gemini G.E.L. It bears Woelffer's embossed red ownership label and handwritten date "July 31-64" on the front pastedown. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
