The Bender / A Sad Comedy (SIGNED)

William Morrow & Co., New York 1963 - First edition indicated by the lack of any statement of edition to copyright page, as per the publisher's 1947 and 1976 statements. Thus, the first American edition, first printing, 1963. Inscribed "To Toby" and signed by the author (full name with middle initial) to title page, apparently in pencil. Signed copies somewhat scarce. The unclipped dust jacket in lovely with only a few small spots of foxing to front flap. The book will close its own text block and thus would usually grade "very good," but shows brown nitrate tape ghosts to endpapers and outside of boards, where some earlier dust jacket protector was once taped down. There are NO signs of library attachments, stampings, or other degradations. Earlier novel by the author of "Jewel in the Crown" and the rest of the Raj Quartet. A droll comedy.         Annual New York Avant Garde Festival [title varies]. Complete set of 19 vintage posters, 1963-1980, 13 of them signed by Jim McWilliams

      - Between 1963 and 1980 the cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman (known mostly for her work with Nam June Paik) organized fifteen increasingly elaborate festivals featuring a wide variety of performances in various locations. The first three were at Judson Hall, a small recital hall across from Carnegie Hall (not to be confused with Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village). Number 4 was in Central Park. Number 5 took over a Staten Island ferry. Number 6 paraded down Central Park West. The 7th was on two islands in the East River, the 8th, at the Lexington Avenue Armory. Festival number 9 occupied a vintage riverboat docked at South Street Seaport. Number 10 took place in Penn Central boxcars on a track at Grand Central Station. Number 11 was at Shea Stadium; number 12, at Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Park in Brooklyn. The World Trade Center was the site of the 13th. Number 14 took place on the Charles River in Cambridge. The final number 15 was at the Passenger Ship Terminal on the Hudson River. **By number 11 (1974) the casts and acknowledgments had grown to the length of movie credits. Among the many hundreds of performers were John Cage, David Tudor, Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg, Ray Johnson, Joseph Beuys, John Lennon, Max Neuhaus, Yvonne Rainer, Laurie Anderson, Ornette Coleman, Geoff Hendricks, Shirley Clarke, Bob Watts, James Tenney, Meredith Monk, and Al Hansen. **For each of these festivals Charlotte Moorman published a poster; there were two versions each of numbers 1, 2, 8, and 9, for a total of nineteen. She designed the simple first three herself; number four was a collaboration with Jim McWiliams; the remaining eleven were his work. Including two versions of nos. 8 and 9, those thirteen are each signed in silver or bronze ink by Jim McWilliams. Like the festivals, the posters became larger and increasingly elaborate, with images and text in layers. Number 11 is a riot of color featuring multiple aerial views of Shea Stadium. Number 13 shows the Twin Towers from different views. If number 11 was a riot of color, number 14 is full-fledged revolution. The sequence ends with a 20-color extravaganza. **A few complete sets remain available of approximately 50 that could be assembled from Charlotte Moorman's estate. Numbers 1, 2, 8, and 9 appear in two versions. Please write or call for a complete descriptive list. Some posters also are available singly. Nearly all of these posters that might appear on the current market were folded and mailed. All of these are flat, uncreased, and unmailed, except 2b, 3, and both number 8s. Those four were folded but are unmarked and have been stored flat. Sizes range from 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches to 36 x 24 inches. Sets will be shipped in tubes.

Mary Poppins (Original screenplay for the 1964 film)

Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Pictures, 1963. Shooting script for the 1964 film. Based loosely on the P.L. Travers book series. Julie Andrews is a magical nanny briefly employed by a dysfunctional Edwardian London family in this classic Disney feature that combines both live action and animated sequences. The film won five Academy Awards and was nominated for another seven, including Best Picture, making "Mary Poppins" the highest-awarded Walt Disney feature ever. Novelist Travers famously voiced her objections to the Disney adaptation of her character, particularly the animated scenes and musical numbers for which the film later gained so much acclaim. Blue studio wrappers, noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT on the front wrapper, marked production No. 2162, dated February 11, 1963, with credits for screenwriters Walsch and DaGradi, songwriters Sherman and Sherman, and novelist Travers. Title page present, dated February 11, 1963, noted as Shooting Script, with credits for screenwriters Walsch and DaGradi, songwriters Sherman and Sherman, and novelist Travers. 207 leaves, mimeograph, with blue and green revision pages throughout, dated variously between 5/14/63 and 6/26/63. Pages about Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound with three gold brads. National Film Registry.

However whilst Epstein was occupied in America, Jeffrey Archer (who was running Oxfam's anti-hunger campaign) managed to get himself backstage at the Beatles concert in Liverpool on December 7th, 1963 at which time he convinced the Beatles to pose for a quick photo with a banner and collection pots.         LEAVING CHEYENNE

New York: Harper and Row, 1963. First Edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, LARRY MCMURTRY. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth, in the original dustjacket. 298pp. A fine copy in like dustjacket, very fresh and attractive. SIGNED COPY OF LARRY MCMURTRY’S SECOND BOOK, every bit as hard to find in collectable condition as his first, HORSEMAN, PASS BY. This copy has been signed boldly on the free-fly by McMurtry in blue ink. The jacket is in what is sometimes called “Second State”, which is actually the same printing as the “first” but with the price clipped off by the publisher and replaced by a small sticker (in some cases a stamp) at $4.95. This was all done prior to the book’s original release date, thus only a very small number of copies can be found with the original $4.50 price intact. “Leaving Cheyenne traces the lives of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Tragic circumstances mark the trail but McMurtry's style never turns melodramatic or sentimental.” - modern editorial review.

1963 - (KENNEDY, Jacqueline) SHAW, Mark. Gelatin silver print. New York: Mark Shaw, 1963. Black-and-white photographic print, measuring 11 by 13-1/2 inches. $7000.Vintage photographic print, taken in Hyannis Port in the fall of 1959, depicting Jackie Kennedy playing the piano with Caroline on her lap. Bears Shaw's own studio stamp on verso.Photographed in 1959 at the Kennedy Compound, this image was evidently printed by photographer Mark Shaw in 1963, most likely in preparation for his book, The John F. Kennedys. The gelatin silver print shows Jackie Kennedy, dressed in casual clothes and slippers, holding Caroline on her lap as she picks out a song on the piano with two fingers. "Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady's photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw's pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election. 'They really should be in the National Gallery!' she enthused. Shaw was very much a part of Camelot and his most famous still photography is associated with that period" (Sullivan, 492). Shaw began his career as a fashion photographer for publications including Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and LIFE Magazine. His talent for discovering new designers and trends caught the eye of Jackie Kennedy, who was growing increasingly visible as the wife of a senator and who was already on her way to becoming a style icon. In 1959, seeking to bolster JFK's presidential campaign, the Kennedys agreed to let Shaw have unrestricted access to their home and lives in order to do a photo-essay for LIFE called A Frontrunner's Wife. Shaw proved unintrusive, managing to take extraordinary candid shots that Jackie compared to the work of Caravaggio. Shaw quickly became a family friend and was a frequent guest in the Kennedy home. Allowed complete access to the family, Shaw began to take photographs of the Kennedys in Georgetown and in Washington; on vacation in Hyannis Port and elsewhere; and even in the White House once JFK was elected President. In 1964, the year after this print was produced, the image appeared as a half-tone in The John F. Kennedys, a photobook that Shaw compiled just after JFK's assassination for Farrar, Straus as a tribute to the family he had grown to love. After JFK died, Shaw became quite protective of the Kennedy prints and put together just five complete albums of the photographs used in the books to be given to four members of the Kennedy family and Dr. Max Jacobson, Kennedy's personal physician. As Shaw died unexpectedly in 1969 at the age of 47, Kennedy prints bearing his studio stamps are quite rare. Shaw studio stamp dated 1963 on verso. Black pencil numbers on verso.Fine condition.         SECONDS .

Pantheon Books A Division of Random House [1963]., New York - Octavo, cloth-backed boards. First edition. The story of a man caught up by a nameless organization that uses advanced managerial and technological methods to achieve its singular aim -- lifting the moral and physical barriers to personal liberty and self-indulgence. Brilliantly filmed by John Frankenheimer with Rock Hudson as the hapless victim of a shadowy organization which ultimately kills him and recycles his body parts. "Like David Ely's slender, nightmarish novel, SECONDS has a thinly science-fictional rationale, but it is actually an exercise in Kafkaesque horror . Outstandingly photographed by James Wong Howe, extremely well played by the whole cast (the choice of Hudson as every man's self-image is inspired), and directed with the imaginative flair John Frankenheimer brought to The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, and 99 and 44/100% Dead, SECONDS is perhaps the scariest movie of the 1960s." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 374. Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror (1999) 6-125. Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, p. 235. Reginald 37728. Hubin (1994), p. 266. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with touch of wear at upper spine end.

The whole tone of his most celebrated work, The Making of the English Working Class (1963), which made his reputation, testifies to this. It was fittingly dedicated to one of these students, and for all its international success it is impossible not to sense that the audience he felt himself to be addressing was a wider one than that of the academy" (ODNB).         A Section of one of the Muntz metal plates removed from the bottom of the hull of the "Cutty Sark" in the course of repairs to the ship in 1963.

330 x 335mm approx, with irregular edges and several holes, some oxidation and patination, preserved in custom-made cloth flapcase with leather label. With original certificate of authenticity, stating this is no. 15 of an unstated limitation, signed by Henry Barraclough, Chairman of the "Cutty Sark" Society. Also with a copy of the 1953 "Cutty Sark and the Days of Sail" exhibition catalogue, and a copy of Frank G.G. Carr's The Story of the Cutty Sark (1972). During ongoing restoration to the Cutty Sark in 1963, 289 sheets of Alumbro were used to replace badly dezincified Muntz metal sheets, some of the original sheets being offered for sale. Muntz Metal is a form of alpha-beta brass with about 60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron. It is named after George Fredrick Muntz, a metal-roller of Birmingham, England. Muntz commercialised the alloy following his patent of 1832, although William Collins had patented a 56:44 alloy in 1800. Its original use was as a replacement for the copper sheathing placed on the bottom of boats, as it maintained the anti-fouling abilities of the pure copper. As it cost around two thirds of the price of pure copper and had identical properties for this application, it became the material of choice and Muntz made his fortune. Later it was used to sheathe the piles of piers in tropical seas, as a protection against teredo shipworms, and in locomotive tubes. Muntz Metal is still the term this form of brass is known by. It is a form of brass that must be worked hot and is used for machine parts that must be corrosion resistant. After successful experimentation with the sheathing Muntz also took out a patent for bolts of the same composition and these also proved a success, for not only were they cheaper they were also very strong and lasted longer. The hull of the Cutty Sark was a notable use of Muntz Metal.

        Autograph Postcard to Leonora Ison.

Colour Panoramic View Card of Chatsworth House. Betjeman was presumably staying at the House with his companion Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, sister of the then Duke of Devonshire. Leonora Ison collaborated with Betjeman on his series of articles Men and Buildings written for the Daily Telegraph providing illustrations to accompany his text. This postcard signed in full by Betjeman gives Ison the plan for the article Preserve or Destroy which appeared on September 9th 1963. "This time I'm writing about the quite false battle created by the fools like Reyner Banham and the Tories (but not mentionaing names) between Destructivists and Preservationists. I want a drawing to show how in the 15th Cent, a comparable time with today, they added Perp to earlier work and both went well together. eg? W Front of Peterborough with its little perp porch, or North of Canterbury with choir layout, or any other thing you like as an example." For the working relationship between Betjeman and Leonora Ison see Hillier The Bonus of Laughter (p.75-78).
