Le joli mai [The Lovely Month of May] (Original photograph from the 1963 film documentary, issued for use at the first New York Film Festival in 1963)

Paris: Chris Marker, 1963. Vintage still photograph from the 1963 film documentary. With stamps from the National Film Archive (noting "duplicate" and "no negative") and a snipe noting that the film will screen on Wednesday, September 18 (1963) as part of the first New York Film Festival. A serious rarity, this being the only still photograph from the film we have ever encountered. In the Spring of 1962, at the end of the Algerian War, Marker and his cinematographer Pierre Lhomme shot 55 hours of footage on the streets of Paris, interviewing random people, with Marker remaining unseen. The topics range from personal lives to social and political issues, with Marker's commentary in voiceover narrative form, read by Yves Montand in the French version and Simone Signoret in the English version. Marker shot his legendary short, "La Jetée," simultaneously with this film. Winner of the 1963 Venice Film Festival award for Best First Work and the Golden Dove Award at the Leipzig DOK Festival. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). In an archival mat. Near Fine.

        "Journey to Liberated China"

China, 1963. Document archive of a journey to China for a pseudo-clandestine reconnaissance, made by author and poet R. P. Lister, featuring a fair journal in typescript transcribed by the author himself from his original travel diary, an introductory account describing the nature and purpose of the journey, and his draft copies of seven articles written upon his return, together with a travel itinerary, other travel papers and vouchers including a Visa request receipt from the China International Tourist Service completed in manuscript and miniature hotel room cards, sightseeing pamphlets, and newspaper articles of importance in China at the time of his travel. Also with a scant few papers pertaining to a one day visit to Moscow. Typescript fair journal: 8vo. 77 pages, with a scant few manuscript drawings. This account is present in duplicate, typed simultaneously onto light tissue paper creating a carbon copy. Typescript pre-press drafts of articles: 8vo. 55 pages combined, including revisions, with annotations throughout. Some of these are also found in duplicate. Typescript introduction to the mission titled "Unexpectedly to China": 8vo. 25 pages including minor revisions in manuscript. A single copy. Travel vouchers and receipts: These vary in size, the smallest measuring 6 x 2,5 cm (hotel room cards) and the largest measuring 13 x 15 cm (Visa receipt), mostly on tissue paper, several inscribed in manuscript in China. Pamphlets and newspaper cuttings vary in size and attributes. Richard Percival Lister (1914-2014), was an English author, poet, artist and metallurgist. During the Second World War he worked in the Royal Naval Torpedo Factory in Greenock in Scotland, the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, Hampshire, and the Ministry of Aircraft Production in London. In 1950 he abandoned metallurgy for full-time writing, publishing most of his works under the name R. P. Lister, including some 400 poems and several books. They include prose novels, autobiographical accounts of travel and other experiences, historical works, and poetry. His travel books are especially engaging, and reputed for the highly personal manner in which he writes. These are also largely illustrated by himself. From 1954 to 1957, he was also general editor for the publishing house Macdonald & Evans Ltd. In 1970 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Lister later became in effect a professional artist in response to enthusiasm for his paintings, earning income from his art. Receiving accolades for his written works as well as his art, Lister has been described as a "reflective, quizzical and un-phased" man, "gently testing humanity," and "a buoyant, erudite, very funny poet." The University of Texas, Harry Ransom Center, holds a collection of R. P. Lister manuscripts relating to the London literary society. According to his own typed account found in the present archive of documents, Lister embarked on a tour of China, ostensibly as a visitor, but, in actuality, on a purposeful, investigative, and somewhat risky expedition on behalf of New York's Associated Press. The mission unveils itself to be a reconnaissance mission to gather information on civilian welfare, the state of economy, on industry, and Communist governance. [For twenty years (1949-1969), the government of the United States of America tried to disrupt, destabilize, and weaken China's communist government, establishing military alliances along China's eastern and southern borders, cutting off trade and orchestrating an international embargo of China, and effectively creating a division between China and the Soviet Union with their so-called "wedge strategy." These efforts and campaigns, naturally, caused China to be suspect of all foreign journalists, and hostile towards American visitors in general.] Lister being an English subject, a travel writer and poet, posed no visible threat to Chinese authorities, was an ideal candidate in the eyes of the major American press agency, and therefore selected as investigator and informant. His expedition being entirely funded by the agency, paid in cash for absolute concealment from potential Chinese spies, began in Peking (Beijing) after a transfer the Omsk airport in Russia. Upon his return to the Western world, Lister wrote and published at least seven unique articles to be published in American periodicals. Further research is warranted to ascertain whether all were published. Here, his draft copies are titled as follows: Red Giants, Old and New The Elusive Gap - Between Plan and Reality Children of the New China Chang's Seventy Yuang The Next Twenty-Five Years The Land of Yesterday and Tomorrow The New Dynasty Especially fascinating is a 25 page typed account which reveals the covert design of the expedition, the secrecy in organizing his funding and so forth, and occasions of "dutiful tourism" whilst privily observing an unsuspecting people and government. Lister being both an astute observer and a skilled writer, his own private diary, 77 pages typed, provides generously, with statistics and notes on commerce, agriculture, and politics, including production of pottery, wine, tea, silk, bricks, carved ivory artefacts, so forth. His journey being in the recent post liberation era, he learns directly by interviewing Chinese civilians, of improved wages, new sanatoriums, improved education and a movement for abolition of illiteracy, medical treatment and standards of living. Over a three week period he extracts an appreciable amount of information, travelling to Beijing, Hankou, Hubei, Shiwan, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Taiping, and back to Beijing for the return journey via Russia. Excerpts from Lister's introductory account and journal: "Unexpectedly to China" - An Introductory Account: "I never had any intention of going to China until four weeks before I left... A friend of mine from New York was in London... I went along to the press agency... Joe said they wanted a man to go to China and see what things were like there, only they could not send one of their own men, because they were all journalists and Americans, and the Chinese had some kind of objection to both... They were so nervous about the Chinese attitude to Americans and journalists that they would not even give me a cheque, in case the Chinese had spied sitting in my bank... So I collected a hundred and seventeen five-pound notes and set off down the Strand... these notes tucked into my inside pocket, feeling like a secret agent..." "The Chinese were uncommonly swift with my visa... probably the fact that I declared myself free from religious beliefs or political affiliations turned the scale... A few hours later we were in Moscow... filling in a lot of green forms with inaccurate statements about the amount of British, Russian and Chinese currency we had with us..." "There were thirteen of us. Two were writers, like myself..." "... on to Peking... Everybody stared at me. I am a rare sight, it seemed, even in Peking, the European was unexpected enough... We spent the day in dutiful tourism, visiting the Imperial Palace - the Forbidden City...the immense Tien An Men Square... the Great Hall of the People... in the evening... off to a theatre... Flanking us was a row of soldiery..." "... Wuhan, on the Yangtze River... seemed more thoroughly Chinese than Peking with its metropolitan apparatus of national government... My impressions of Peking were reinforced; undoubtedly these people were crushed by a tyrannical government, and half-starved, but they succeeded in looking neither crushed nor starved... the children were fat and happy... a general air of purposeful activity, and a greater air of apparent contentment than is immediately visible in Chicago or Stockton-on-Tees. Clearly I was being brainwashed... " "Everything in China has happened since the Liberation. On October 1st, 1949 Moa Tse-Tung proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic... and illustrates the superiority of the Marxist-Leninist way of life... " "Human muscle does most of the work that in the West would be done by machines... may explain to some extent the bland Chinese attitude toward birth control... In rural areas, mechanical transport is almost non-existent... " "In every town... meeting with the local C.I.T.F. [China International Travel Service] officials... we were exposed to the full delegate-ritual of Communist countries... and a toast of British-Chinese friendship." "The Chinese were not reluctant to talk about their difficulties. This was a poor backward country, they told us... They have a furious impatience with revisionism, the departure from the pure faith. Russia is an old and still-valued friend who has gone astray... They consider that journalists would only send out biased reports of them..." "This seems to be - I am speaking from the standpoint of what we saw and heard... - the one country in the world whose inhabitants do not feel themselves to be menaced by anybody.... The one true enemy is America..." "Notes on a Journey to China" - Lister's Diary: "Yangste River Bridge... one of the oddities of the Chinese bureaucratic dictatorship... not allowed to take photographs from the top of the bridge - the roadway - because there is a militia post on the top of a hill on the north side of Yangtse, almost out of sight, and taking photographs of militia posts or militiamen is strictly forbidden..." "D and I talked much on the way back to Li and Ray about medical treatment, standard s of living, and the unfortunate matter of the W. German journalists who published those carefully selected photographs showing the seamier sides of life in the People's Republic." "Ivory carving factory... scrapings are used in medicine - eye complaints... Mostly one man from start to finish. Ivory imported through Hong Kong." "Fushan village commune... estab. end of Aug. 1958. 11,700 households, 44,000 people, 18,000 labour force... All communal enterprises serve agricultural production... Welfare facilities: hospitals, clinics, medical stations, primary school... Members of commune work very happily and each woman has 6 days & each man 4 days holiday per month..." "Before liberation... half of cultivated land was owned by landlords, about 20-30% by middle or poorer classes... They earn according to how much is picked, not hours worked..." "Ping Fung Workers' Sanatorium... Built 1954... 800 beds... People who come to cure their chronic diseases... those who come for short rest... Treatment usually combines Chinese traditional medicine and Western medicine... electro-therapy, hydratherapy, wax therapy, heat treatment, ultraviolet, infrared etc. Also Chinese liquid medicine, acupuncture..." "Ming Hung Industrial Area... 26 km from Shanghai...All inhabitants of MH are workers in the Ming Hung Industrial Area. Many recently built factories... Cinemas, park, library... New hospital... This is one of the 12 districts of Shanghai... No light was here and no running water... Couple with 1 child have 1 room. 5-6 people 2 rooms..." End excerpts. Some years later, R. P. Lister would write two books on China, "The Secret History of Genghis Khan," published in London by Peter Davies, 1969, and "Marco Polo's Travels (in Xanadu with Kublai Khan)," published in London by Gordon & Cremonesi, 1976.

Oz. No. 1 (April 1963) through No. 41 (February 1969) (all published)

. 1963. A complete run in 41 issues of the irreverent Australian counterculture journal, under the editorial direction of Richard Neville with Peter Grose, Dean Letcher, Martin Sharp, and Richard Walsh, containing stories related to topics including abortion, chastity, censorship, homosexuality, police brutality, organized crime, the Vietnam War, religion, domestic and international politics, film, and literature, together with information on the social scene in Sydney, cultural calendars, letters, cartoons, poetry, crossword puzzles, and satire and humor. Illustrated throughout. Some scattered pen or pencil notations, minor soiling. 4to. Orig. illustrated wrpps. Sydney 1963-1969. The first issue of Oz came out on April Fools' Day 1963, and was an immediate sensation, selling 6,000 copies by lunchtime. Although Oz was first published in Sydney, a second, better-known version appeared in London from 1967 to 1973, also founded by Richard Neville. While the Australian version was more satirical in nature, the British version was more psychedelic and in-tune with the hippie culture in London at the time. However, both versions were the subject of obscenity trials during their publications, with the Australian version being cited twice and the British version cited once, very famously, in what was at the time the longest obscenity trial in British legal history. The Sydney publication is very scarce; as of September 2016, WorldCat locates only 4 holdings in North America.

Autograph Musical Manuscript of an Unpublished Composition for Orchestra

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph musical sketch from an apparently unpublished work for orchestra by the important avant-garde composer. According to the accompanying photocopied letter from the composer dated December 21, 1963, the manuscript is the  opening pages of a 1958 orchestra work, which he decided not to continue. The verso of the third sheet, however, bears the title in his hand "Apparitions II," and indeed some of the material in the preceding pages is highly reminiscent of the second section Agitato in the work of that name, composed in of the same year, with similarly muted and jittery music for string orchestral groups in different meters.  3 pp., large vertical folio format with 32 staves. Written in pencil with some eraser marks. Slight toning and foxing, with the upper edge slightly trimmed, else fine.  Autograph musical material by Ligeti is of the utmost rarity. "When Ligeti left Hungary, in 1956, he took with him his scores and also his hopesâ??in particular, his hopes for a kind of music corresponding to a dream he had had as a boy, one of lying in his bed amid a fantastic silken web in which strange creatures and inert objects were suspended. He had tried to realize this dream in sound in Hungary, but lacked the technical means. In 1957 he tried again. Finally, in 1958-9, while working alongside Stockhausen in the Cologne electronic music studio, he produced Apparitions, a nine-minute score whose contents include, in his own words, "sounding planes and masses, which may succeed, penetrate or mingle with one anotherâ??floating networks that get torn up or entangledâ??wet, sticky, gelatinous, fibrous, dry, brittle, granular and compact materials, shreds, curlicues, splinters, and traces of every sortâ??imaginary buildings, labyrinths, inscriptions, texts, dialogues, insectsâ??states, events, processes, blendings, transformations, catastrophes, disintegrations, disappearances." (Paul Griffiths, Notes from ASO concert Spacial Explorations, June 1, 2008, Lincoln Center.)

[Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre] The Verdict [The Big Four] (Original screenplay for the 1964 film)

London: Edgar Wallace Mystery Theater / Merton Park Productions, 1963. Final Script for the 1964 British film, later rebroadcast as Season 5, Episode 5 of "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theater." Based on the 1929 novel "The Big Four" by Edgar Wallace, written for the screen by Arthur La Bern, and starring Cec Linder, Zena Marshall, and Nigel Davenport. The "Edgar Wallace Mysteries" constituted a run of 47 films, all produced at Merton Park Studios for Anglo-Amalgamated between 1960 and 1965 as second features for distribution in British cinema houses. They were generally based on adaptations of original late Victorian/early twentieth century stories by Edgar Wallace, updated to reflect contemporary settings. The features were rebroadcast later the same year on the Edgar Wallace Mystery Theater, which ran in both the US and UK. The opening was a slowly revolving bust of Edgar Wallace to the accompaniment of the "Man of Mystery theme," written by Michael Carr, later recorded by The Shadows, and a No. 1 hit record in the UK. Black titled wrappers with the British-style diecut window to the front wrapper. Title page present, with a date of July 1963 and credits for story writer Edgar Wallace and screenwriter Arthur La Bern. 75 leaves, mimeograph, rectos only. Pages Near Fine with light soil to the page edges and to the title page, wrapper Near Fine bound with three silver metal brads.

Nomura Shoji Kabushiki Kaisha, Kobe 1963 - Large 8vo, (approx. 10½" x 7½), pp. 36; with 13 tipped-in silver prints (9 of them showing lumbering operations), and 12 color half-tones of wood samples; original orange cloth-covered boards lettered in white and gilt on upper cover; a touch of fading to the top of the front cover, one page loosening; all else very good. Prepared for the Nomura firm's 30th anniversary, containing much information on this lumber importer which was the sole Japanese company licensed to sell wood from the British Borneo Timber Company. The original photographs include portraits of the founding and current presidents of Nomura, a 2-part ariel view of its coastal facility and lumbering operations. The text features letters of congratulations from other companies, a history of Nomura, and a few graphs and charts tracking the quantity of its annual imports, all printed on a flecked Japanese paper. The last section features descriptions of 12 types of Borneo wood with tipped-in reproductions of cross-sections, which convincingly look very much like actual slivers of wood.         [Gruppe N] bibione peneda. tedesco.

The Feminine Mystique

New York: W. W. Norton, 1963. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Gus- A very gay and "untimid" program- Betty Friedan Feb. 4, 1963." The publication date of The Feminine Mystique was February 19, 1963, this copy was signed two weeks prior. Fuith a few small closed tears. The Feminine Mystique begins with an introduction describing what Friedan called "the problem that has no name"?the widespread unhappiness of women in the 1950s and early 1960s. It discusses the lives of several housewives from around the United States who were unhappy despite living in material comfort and being happily married with fine children. "[The Feminine Mystique] now feels both revolutionary and utterly contemporary. Four decades later, millions of individual transformations later, there is still so much to learn from this book. Those who think of it as solely a feminist manifesto ought to revisit its pages to get a sense of the magnitude of the research and reporting Friedan undertook" (Anna Quindlen). Named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 best and most influential non-fiction books since 1923.

Claude François ajoute un pense-bête entre guillemet : (recherchez le disque « See the funny little clown ». »
