        A Sense of Reality.

London: The Bodley Head, 1963. - AUTHOR'S OWN COPY, SIGNED with letter. First Edition. Octavo. pp.140; [4]. Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine. Stylized dust-jacket shows titles against an abstract green and black background to front cover, titles in black to spine, with publisher's advertisement to rear cover; unclipped, originally priced 35s. Binding shows minor shelfwear. Dust-jacket equally bright, with trivial rubbing and one small tear to upper. Autographed on title-page, with accompanying statement signed by Greene on headed letter of literary scholar R.A. Gekoski, certifying that this copy was the author's 'own personal file copy, and bears [his] ownership signature'. This is a selection of four short stories, in which Greene experiments with a somewhat more expressionist mode of writing. The stories are preoccupied with dreams, and are thematically in keeping with Greene's novel-length studies of darker psychological and social tension. It represents the author's only fantasy collection, the final story 'A Discovery In the Woods', being Greene's only attempt at science fiction. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich

1963 - SOLZHENITSYN, Alexander. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. New York: E.P. Dutton, 1963. Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket. $12,000.First edition in English of the Nobel Prize-winner's first published work, signed on the half title by Solzhenitsyn in Cyrillic, along with an inscription in English in an unidentified hand, "For the C"" Family."The speech denouncing Stalin at the 22nd Communist Party Congress in 1961 emboldened Solzhenitsyn to submit One Day for publication to". the Moscow literary journal Novyi Mir. Premier Nikita Khrushchev piloted a special resolution through the Central Committee authorizing its publication; it appeared in November 1962, and Solzhenitsyn found himself catapulted to literary fame by his first published work, not only for its intrinsic merits but for the very fact that the government was allowing fictional treatment of a formerly forbidden topic, life in Stalin's forced-labor camps" (Terras, Handbook of Russian Literature, 437). The novel was based on Solzhenitsyn's eight-year incarceration in a Kazakhstan labor camp. It is the first and perhaps the best example of this Nobel laureate's belief in "the indivisibility of truth and 'the perception of world literature as the one great heart which beats for the concerns and misfortunes of our world" (Solzhenitsyn, Nobel prize acceptance speech, 1970). This, the first English translation, was faithful to the Russian original and necessarily included the "deliberately muted themes" resultant from Solzhenitsyn's self-censorship required for publication in the Soviet Union in 1962. Translated by Ralph Parker. With a foreword by Alexander Tvardovsky, the editor who accepted the novel for publication in Novyi Mir. Issued simultaneously in English and American trade editions.       1963 - (KENNEDY, Jacqueline) SHAW, Mark. Gelatin silver print. New York: Mark Shaw, 1963. Black-and-white photographic print, measuring 13-1/2 by 9 inches. Handsomely matted and framed, entire piece measures 22 by 18 inches. $6800.Vintage photographic print depicting Jackie Kennedy walking along the Georgetown canal. Bears Shaw's own studio stamp and "Private Print" on verso.Photographed during the last weeks before the presidential election in 1959, this image was evidently printed by photographer Mark Shaw in 1963, most likely in preparation for his book, The John F. Kennedys. The gelatin silver print shows Jackie Kennedy on one of the regular late morning walks she took along the Georgetown canal after JFK left for the Senate Office Building. "Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady's photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw's pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election. "˜They really should be in the National Gallery!' she enthused". Shaw was very much a part of Camelot and his most famous still photography is associated with that period" (Sullivan, 492). Shaw began his career as a fashion photographer for publications including Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and LIFE Magazine. His talent for discovering new designers and trends caught the eye of Jackie Kennedy, who was growing increasingly visible as the wife of a senator and who was already on her way to becoming a style icon. In 1959, seeking to bolster JFK's presidential campaign, the Kennedys agreed to let Shaw have unrestricted access to their home and lives in order to do a photo-essay for LIFE called A Frontrunner's Wife. Shaw proved unintrusive, managing to take extraordinary candid shots that Jackie compared to the work of Caravaggio. Shaw quickly became a family friend and was a frequent guest in the Kennedy home. Allowed complete access to the family, Shaw began to take photographs of the Kennedys in Georgetown and in Washington; on vacation in Hyannis Port and elsewhere; and even in the White House once JFK was elected President. In 1964, the year after this print was produced, the image appeared as a half-tone in The John F. Kennedys, a photobook that Shaw compiled just after JFK's assassination for Farrar, Straus as a tribute to the family he had grown to love. After JFK died, Shaw became quite protective of the Kennedy prints and put together just five complete albums of the photographs used in the books to be given to four members of the Kennedy family and Dr. Max Jacobson, Kennedy's personal physician. As Shaw died unexpectedly in 1969 at the age of 47, Kennedy prints bearing his studio stamps are quite rare. Shaw studio stamp dated 1963 and "Private Print" stamp on verso. Red and black pencil and pen labeling and measurements on verso.Fine condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
