CHURCHILL, Winston S.
London: The Educational Book Company Ltd, 1956-58. London: The Educational Book Company Ltd,, 1956-58. 4 volumes, large octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt-panelled spines with red leather labels lettered in gilt, front covers lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges blue, blue and white endbands. With plates, diagrams and tables throughout. Lightly rubbed, single small chip to front joint of vol. I, light marking to front cover of vol. III. A very good set. First edition of the Chartwell Edition, the first illustrated edition of Churchill's famous history, the second overall. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations - the British Empire and the United States - was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship". "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race". Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

New York, Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1956. First Edition. First Impression. A near fine copy, of a popular Science Fiction work. A novelisation of the Leslie Neilsen film. Anthony Boucher's review was "an abysmally banal job of hackwork." - Thanks Tony! A nice copy though, with a little edge wear, mostly to top the spine and front corner. A very presentable copy though, with none of the usual rubbing to the edges. Jacket reinforced internally to corners with brown tape. Doesn't really detract. GINSBERG, Allen.
San Francisco: The City Lights Pocket Bookshop, 1956. San Francisco: The City Lights Pocket Bookshop,, 1956. The Pocket Poets Series: Number Four. Duodecimo. Original stiff black wrappers, stapled as issued, with a white hand-pasted wraparound paper label printed in black. Very minor rubbing to extremities, light browning to wraparound label, edges faintly toned as often; nevertheless a very good copy indeed. First published edition, first printing, with the spelling "Lucien Carr" in the dedication, and the eighth line of the second paragraph on the rear cover beginning "Harlem". This copy is from the library of contemporary San Francisco poet Jean Mclean, with their calligraphic ownership inscription "Jean and Jo Mclean" to p. [4], and each of the elided swear words carefully supplied in manuscript. Mclean's poetry was published in Seven Stray Cats in Sausalito in 1957, alongside poets such as Jack Gilbert, with whom they collaborated on two erotic novels under the pseudonym Tor Kung, Gerald Stern, and Laura Uronovitz. Howl and other poems was a landmark collection considered one of the principle works of literature that launched the Beat Generation. It was Ginsberg's first regularly published book, and was printed in a run of an estimated 1,500 copies. It was preceded only by the privately produced mimeographed printings of the title poem (1955) and Siesta in Xbalba (July 1956).

J.R.R. Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien (1956, 1956, 1955) 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. UK first edition set ('The Return of the King first printing; 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Two Towers' fourth printings), published by George Allen and Unwin. The set consist of: The Fellowship of the Rings (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket) The Two Towers (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket) The Return of the King (1st printing, 1955, in a first printing dust jacket; second state (or variant) with a '4' at the bottom of page 49, one of 7,000 copies printed) 7,000 copies were printed of 'The Return of the King' in its first print run. There are several states or variants of the first edition, with a '4' or without a '4' on page 49. Tolkien bibliography experts change their minds every few years what state precedes the other. Thus, we prefer the term variant to state. Notice that the first and second volume come with third impression dust jackets respectively. Since the third and fourth print runs were published within a few months apart it is likely that the publisher used the excess third printing dust jackets for the fourth print run. However, third printings are more valuable than fourth printings, and better than if fifth printings dust jackets were housing fourth printing books. Condition: near fine. All three books retain their original maps as called for. 'Return of the King', which is the most valuable of the set is very clean and the only flaw is the slight browning of the wrapper on the spine. Otherwise fine. All three books retain the original red colou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although he was an English citizen, Fleming's "familiarity with many aspects of American life, shiny and shady, gives cold actuality to the most exciting and ingenious story he has written." It was adapted into a film of the same name starring Sean Connery as Bond in 1971. Notably, Fleming's background research for this novel, specifically the interviews he conducted with the International Diamond Security Organisation, ultimat … [Click Below for Full Description]
