Cassell. All four volumes are first edition / first state published by Cassell between 1956 and 1958. Signed by the author, Winston Churchill on the front free endpaper of volume 1: The Birth of Britain. Churchill's last great work was published nearly 20 years after he penned its first draft in the late 1930s, just after wrapping up [the biography of] Marlborough. Volume 1. The Birth of Britain. 1956. 416 pages. Volume 2. The New World. 1956. 344 pages. Volume 3. The Age of Revolution. 1957. 332 pages. Volume 4. The Great Democracies. 1958. 322 pages.         Walt Kelly Pogo Strips Original Drawings.

Original pen and ink and Wash Drawings by Walt Kelly. Four panel Pogo Strips from 1956. Each approximately 16.5 inches by 5 inches. Slightly toned, together in one matte. Each is signed on the image, each also inscribed below the image at right and one of these also signed by Walt Kelly. Matted and framed. The complete piece measures 19.5 inches by 24.5 inches. Pogo is the title and central character of a long-running daily American comic strip, created by cartoonist Walt Kelly (1913-1973) and distributed by the Post-Hall Syndicate. Set in the Okefenokee Swamp of the southeastern United States, the strip often engaged in social and political satire through the adventures of its anthropomorphic funny animal characters. Pogo combined both sophisticated wit and slapstick physical comedy in a heady mix of allegory, Irish poetry, literary whimsy, puns and wordplay, lushly detailed artwork and broad burlesque humor. The same series of strips can be enjoyed on different levels by both young children and savvy adults. The strip earned Kelly a Reuben Award in 1951.

Yours and all the other good wishes were a great comfort to me.Many Many thanks,Marilyn Monroe Miller""Marilyn's married name of Miller places this thank-you card between the dates of 1956 to 1961. She had just recently moved to New York from Hollywood, a city of which she said: "If I close my eyes and picture LA, all I see is one big varicose vein." And it was during her stay in New York that she once again encountered Arthur Miller, whom she had met on a movie set five years before. Now that Monroe was in New York, they started dating. The 1975 letter from Monroe's ex-husband was sent thirteen years after Marilyn's death and fourteen years after the couple's divorce. Miller's letter was written on his personal stationary to the "Heller's"" and offers his ""congratulations and good wishes on your anniversary"".Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe's marriage, considered odd by many, did not last. It is believed that Marilyn had misgivings about going through with the religious ceremony just after they had conducted their civil ceremony. Rumor has it that Marilyn happened to come across Miller's notebook lying open on a table, and discovered that he was disappointed in her, feared that his own creativity would be threatened by this pitiable, dependent, unpredictable waif he had married, and was seriously regretting the union. Marilyn told friends that he also wrote, "The only one I will ever love is my daughter", though Miller could not recall having written that. It was a blow from which the marriage would never recover. Things went steadily from bad to worse and although Miller wrote the script of The Misfits for Marilyn, the pair separated in 1960 and divorced the following year.An extremely scarce and unique set. Provenance:This fantastic Monroe ALS is ex Howard Goldman, whose fabulous collection was auctioned by Sotheby's over 20 years ago, though this favorite was retained and displayed by his wife. It was last sold in 1976 via the Charles Hamilton Auction House. Included with these four pieces will be the original Charles Hamilton Auction Catalogue from June 3, 1976 where these items appear as lot #4, with original invoice included."

Zoo Quest to Guiana [with] Zoo Quest for a Dragon [with] Zoo Quest in Paraguay [with] Quest in Paradise [with] Zoo Quest to Madagascar [with] Quest under Capricorn. THE 'ZOO QUEST' SERIES COMPLETE IN DUSTWRAPPERS WITH SIGNATURE

Lutterworth Press, 1956. 6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispieces and very numerous coloured and monochrome plates throughout; original cloth (green/red/green/red/blue/green respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper (a few wrappers lightly chafed at headbands). SECOND VOLUME SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON CARD MOUNTED ON HALF-TITLE. A remarkably bright, fresh set in the original colourful wrappers of Attenborough's earliest books, recording his 'Zoo Quest' animal-foraging expeditions in many different territories. Well-illustrated and delightfully written, these early titles display much of the talent and infectious charm that has since made their author a naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of world renown. The series captures well the appeal of his first-ever television series 'Zoo Quest' that ran on the BBC from 1954-1964. It also gave rise, incidentally (in those far-off pre-computer days), to a highly popular board game! The sequence comprises 'Zoo Quest to Guiana' (1956), 'Zoo Quest for a Dragon' (1957), 'Zoo Quest to Paraguay' (1959), 'Quest in Paradise' (1960), 'Zoo Quest to Madagascar' (1961) and 'Quest under Capricorn' (1963). Two omnibus volumes of extracts were published for a new generation of readers in the 1980s. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE.

The Concentration of Essential Personnel in American Cities

RAND Corporation 1956 - ATOMIC BOMB. The Concentration of Essential Personnel in American Cities. Margaret Bright Rowan. The RAND Corporation, May 1956. 72pp. 11x8 inches. RARE. No copies located in WorldCat/OCLC $500 Perhaps nothing is obvious unless it is established or labeled so; perhaps the obviousness must be stated at least once before it can be officially, recognizably, the case. And perhaps the greater the obviousness is, the more the need to make it officially so. Perhaps nothing is so incredibly obvious that it can be studied and dissected and established. This seems to be more the case in more recent history than in time more further removed: that millions of dollars can be spent “proving” that children do not like to be separated from their mothers, or that cars will go faster downhill than up, or that people will respond to proper medication better than not, and so on, so on into the night, just seem not to need a vastly-funded proof. And so the case with nuclear warfare, people, and cities. In this RAND report from 1956, the great issue seems to be laid to rest, once and for all: the problem with nuclear weapons being exploded in/over cities is that since cities are filled with people, people will be killed. And if those people in the cities are there because of professions that depend on city-settings, then more of those people will be killed than not. Rand report But what this report was really about was the unfortunate aspect of the impact if nuclear warfare on leadership and working positions in significant and strategic industrial/business/government professions. And what the report finds is this: since the vast majority of these positions are located in cities (defined as 100,000 population and above), and since cities will be the major targets in a nuclear “exchange”, the overwhelming majority of these people will be killed, thus leading to strategic human resource vacancies post-war. It seems that 95% of aeronautical engineers in the U.S. would be killed in a nuclear war, which I guess would mean that it would be difficult to design new aircraft and such in the post apocalypse world. Of course these people would be killed because it was their industrial base that was being targeted and they were collateral damage, so there wouldn’t be any industrial base to produce the components necessary to build, say, a B-52. That part of the equation is not addressed here, though. Nor is there any sort of recommendation presented to fix the problem. The RAND document just painfully points out the obvious, once and for all; no one really knew what to do with the information now that it was there, in black and white. Certain people could be evacuated, saved from the maelstrom; but saved for what? There were other evacuation plans that were completely doomed from the beginning, sheltering plans, Dr. Strangelove arrangements, but all of that would come into their pitiful being later on. First, though, the bitter reality of what everyone already knew--one of the greatest of all obviousnesses–had to be make its appearance in print. And so it did. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
