        de Stijl 1917-1931

Alec Tiranti Ltd., London, first British edition, English, translated from the Dutch, 1956 OFFERING:A historic specimen, formerly in the libraries of Hans Schleger and Paul Rand, two of the leading modern graphic design artists influenced by de Stijl. First owned by Hans Schleger, he gave it to Paul Rand on the latter's autumn 1969 visit to London, provenance detailed by Paul Rand on the half title page; "London Oct. 3.69 from Hans Schleger." Reading, Paul Rand became engaged in colloquy with the text and wrote in the margins, underlined passages, and made several doodles. In all, there are 164 entries on 71 pages: 91 phrases or sentences are underlined, 63 notes in margins repeat ideas or facts and there are five doodles, four annotations (commentary) and one correction. Two associated items have been laid-in to the book by Paul Rand. LAID IN: 1) A sheet of 124 x 199 mm, white, lined note paper with handwritten notes and fifteen small pen & ink doodles-studies by Paul Rand on one side of the sheet, one with added pencil, including a self-portrait series and two portraits of Marion, his future wife. There are also four volumetric studies, a sitting woman in a dress, after Matisse with note, a rendering of the number 5, and two horse studies. Of the six notes, two are for a lecture on de Stijl. 2) A BA Concorde boarding pass with its die cut of a clothes hanger, Mr. Rand written in twice; believed to be a memento from Paul Rand's trip to attend Hans Schleger's funeral. BACKGROUND: The seminal influence of the De Stijl movement on modern graphic design followed from their devotion to simplicity and clarity with their exploration of the dynamic equilibrium of the horizontal and vertical line and division of the design or artwork into connected grids. Paul Rand and Hans Schleger were leaders in creating a new language for graphic design that came to be widely adopted, the former in the United States, the latter, principally in Great Britain where he was appointed Royal Designer for Industry in 1959. Schleger and Rand became close friends after they met at the Arts Club in Dover, soon after the end of WWII. Paul Rand recalled their quickly growing rapport; "It was only a short time after we left the club that we were walking arm-in-arm along Piccadilly, destined to be friends." [Heller, Paul Rand]. CONDITION DETAIL: Handwritten in the Book by Paul Rand: provenance note, underlining, notes, annotations and doodles in margins on 71 pages, title page with 1954 and question mark (believed to be his incorrect surmise on Jaffé's thesis publication date). Pages otherwise: plates suite with yellowing in margins, text pages and other illustration pages clean and bright, except p. 139 with bottom margin spot and pages 166-167 with 2 margin spots; pp. 44-293 with light bottom tip bump, endpapers with rubs. Boards: some soiling and light edge wear. / Gilt: Bright / Binding: Very Good, slight spine slant. / Notepaper: Fair, top corner with fold-over chip with loss and fraying, top margin folded over with 8 mm band of browning; two small spots in another margin. / Boarding Pass: slight ink smudge, top edge with minor wear, bottom edge with light wear, rear with minor rubs. PAGINATION: Complete; 360 pages with extensive documentation, including translations of two Mondrian essays, chapter notes, and an extensive bibliography (pp. 269-291); illustrated with a suite of 48 full-page b/w illustrations + 4 full-page color plates, each printed on one side of a glazed paper. FORMAT: Publisher's sewn white cloth boards, spine stamped with gilt letters. SIZE: 245 x 174 mm. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

        What I Think.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1956. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Jack Kennedy- to an author with the admiration of a politician Adlai E. Stevenson 2/26/56." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. With the Presidential seal of Kennedy's opposite the front free endpaper. Kennedy had taken a leave of absence from the Senate in 1954 to write his best-selling book Profiles in Courage, which would win him a Pulitzer Prize in 1957. Was Stevenson's inscription a sincere compliment? Certainly his self-abasing description of himself as a "politician" is suspect, because he was among the most literate of all presidential candidates and an author in his own right. It was already well known that young Kennedy harbored big political ambitions (as did his father on his behalf), and perhaps, with the Democratic nominating convention just months away, Stevenson was firing a shot across JFK's bow-suggesting that perhaps he should stick to authoring and not tangle with the veteran Stevenson in party politics. At any rate, it is a delightful message between two of the leading politicians of the day. After winning the presidency, Kennedy would go on to appoint Adlai Stevenson as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This book was purchased in the 1995 Sotheby's auction of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis estate, where it sold for $31,050.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1956].. Octavo, boards. First edition. A completely revised and expanded version of Clarke's first published novel, AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT (1948; 1953). "Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 (1968) is one of the most famous computer stories, but his THE CITY AND THE STARS (1956) may well be the profound artistically successful work of cybernetic fiction ... [It] is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of the imagination in all the literature that I am considering. Beyond imagining how computers might transform a society, Clarke also dramatizes the philosophical implications of life in a totally structured society. The novel is even more deserving of commendation because it is an early cybernetic novel, and computers and information theory were recent developments when it was written." - Warrick, The Cybernetic Imagination in Science Fiction, pp. 166-70. This novel "is perhaps his most characteristic and most enduring." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 374-7. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-245.       New York: Simon & Schuster, 1956. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, stated. Very good in decorative boards; no jacket, as issued. Light edgewear, chipping to the spine at head and foot; corners bumped. This copy inscribed by Crockett Johnson: "To Ursula, who was kind to this animal from away back," and signed by him. It's our belief that the Ursula is Ursula Nordstrom, the legendary children's book editor; Nordstrom edited Johnson's "Harold and he Purple Crayon." However, there is a previous and unrelated owner's name on the front free endpaper, which is enough of a cautionary to prevent declaring this as an important association copy. So: a nice copy with an uncommon signature and a tantalizing possibility.

A fantastic set for the collector of Marilyn Monroe autographs. The stunning card was neatly scripted by Marilyn to Louis Schlamowitz, a floral designer from Canarsie and a widower who never graduated from high school. Schlamowitz's obsession with autographs has yielded scores of loose-leaf binders crammed into the Bay View House apartment he shares with a squirmy Chihuahua named Marbles. His extensive collection consisted of over 5,000 notables, famous and infamous, who have sent their autographs to him over the years. Celebrity responses flowed into the apartment he once shared with his wife, Dora, including a 1978 photo from a little-known Arkansas attorney general named Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, David Ben-Gurion and Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe’s letter addressed to him is as shown below in full:""Dear Mr. SchlamowitzThank you so much for your kind note. Yours and all the other good wishes were a great comfort to me.Many Many thanks,Marilyn Monroe Miller""Marilyn's married name of Miller places this thank-you card between the dates of 1956 to 1961.
