FORBIDDEN PLANET

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. A novelization of the pioneering 1956 American science fiction film from MGM, produced by Nicholas Nayfack, directed by Fred M. Wilcox, and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, and Robby the Robot. The novel, which was released shortly before the film, delves further into the mysteries of the vanished Krell and Morbius' relationship to them. It also includes an element never included in the film: when Dr. Ostrow dissects one of the dead Earth-type animals, he discovers that its internal structure precludes it from ever having been alive in the normal biological sense. The tiger, deer, and monkey are all conscious creations by Dr. Morbius using the Great Machine as companions ("pets") for his daughter and only outwardly resembly their Earth counterparts. This is a MGM vault copy, with a label from the MGM Script Department on the front flyleaf, blue MGM ink stamps to the front flyleaf and all three edges, and a cloth label stamped "VAULT COPY" to the spine heel of the dust jacket. Octavo. Original yellow cloth binding, with gray stamping. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with some occasional light edgewear.

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK: DRAMATIZED BY FRANCES GOODRICH AND ALBERT HACKETT

New York, Program Publishing Company(N.D.). No date (1956) . First edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers with full page (magazine size) black-and-white cover photograph of the actors playing Anne and Otto Frank embracing. 4to. 16 pages; 30 cm. A collectors' souvenir program from the Original Broadway Production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" with the original cast. Features dozens of fabulous black-and-white photos, some headshots, some archival, and some candids from the show with lines from the play beneath them. The entire cast and crew of the production, Kermit Bloomgarden, Joseph Schildkraut, Susan Strasberg, Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Dennie Moore, Jack Gilford, Clinton Sundberg, Lou Jacobi, Garson Kanin, Boris Aronson, Helene Pons, and Leland Watson, had successful careers in the entertainment industry. Joseph Schildkraut, the actor who played Otto Frank, was a prolific film and theatre actor who performed in Show Boat (1927) , The Twilight Zone (1961) , Marie Antoinette (1938) among several others. He "received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Alfred Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola (1937) " and was nominated for a Best Actor Emmy Award in 1963 (Wikipedia, 2016) . Susan Strasberg, daughter of Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio, was "the youngest actress to star on Broadway with her name above the marquee title" for her Tony nominated role as Anne Frank in this production (Wikipedia, 2016) . Strasberg starred and guest-starred in many other roles throughout her career and wrote two books, one an autobiography and one about her friendship with Marilyn Monroe. Jack Gilford, the actor who played Mr. Dussel, was discovered by his mentor Milton Berle, was nominated for several Tony Awards and an Academy Award, and started the comedy tradition of monology later used by comedians such as Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen. His career was derailed when choreographer Jerome Robbins named him and his wife, Madeline Lee, as Communist sympathizers to HUAC. This is one of the fancier programs that you have to purchase, rather than the playbill programs that they give out. SUBJECT(S) : Anne Frank, Broadway, Theatre. OCLC lists no holdings worldwide. Minimal markings and wear. Very good + condition. (Holo2-133-10)

      - On the suggestion of friend and fellow photographer, Robert Capa, Duncan traveled to France to meet Picasso in 1956. Picasso would become a friend and the subject of seven photographic books. Their friendship lasted until Picasso's death. Picasso referred to Duncan as his "Ishmael" and Duncan called Picasso "Maestro." With photographs of Picasso and his dog taken in 1957, Duncan produced a photographic book on Picasso and his dachshund Lump titled, "Picasso & Lump: A Dachshund's Odyssey" published in 2006. Our image is not included in the book. Note: Lump is German roughly translated into English as rascal or rogue. Lee Oswald

[1956]. Offered is one piece of the 19 remaining pieces from Lee Harvey Oswald’s electric football game.

Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother, Mrs. Marguerite Oswald, testified before the President’s Commission on the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Washington, D.C., on the morning of February 12, 1964. Present were Chief Justice Earl Warren, Chairman; Representative Hale Boggs and Representative Gerald R. Ford, members. Also present were J. Lee Rankin, general counsel; Wesley J. Liebeler, assistant counsel; and John F. Doyle, attorney for Mrs. Marguerite Oswald.

Excerpt from Mrs. Oswald’s testimony: ““Lee was a very quiet and studious boy. None of my children gave me any trouble, thank God. We have no police record, sir, or anything like that. And the children were always more or less home. And particularly Lee. Lee would go to the movies, and things like that. He was a normal boy. But when he was home, he was most happy. And I am of this disposition. He could keep himself occupied - - reading and when he watched a football game on television, he would have the score pad, and things of that sort. And so he was quite happy in his own way ... While Lee was working for Tujague & Co. he started to have a bank account, and it was in a Homestead. I do not know the name, but it was on Canal Street, 900 or 100 block of Canal Street, because it was even with Exchange Place. And he started to save his money ... Are we in 1955 in New Orleans? Yes. No, 1956 this would be. January, 1956--Lee took his money out of the Homestead, which was approximately $150, or something like that. And Lee Harvey Oswald bought an electric football machine cost approximately $10. He bought a bow and arrow set--maybe about $6 or $7. And he bought a gun.”

Accompanied by a signed statement of Robert L. Oswald, brother of Lee Harvey Oswald: “To Whom It May Concern: My brother Lee was born in New Orleans in 1939. Lee and my mother moved back to New Orleans from New York City in January 1954 when Lee was 14. It was while he was living in New Orleans that Lee bought an electric football game. When I was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in July 1955, I settled in Fort Worth, Texas. In the Summer of 1956, Mother and Lee moved from New Orleans to Ft. Worth where we shared an apartment. Over the years, a few football player pieces were lost. I now transfer ownership of the remaining 19 football player pieces bought by and belonging to Lee to John Reznikoff of University Archives in Westport, Connecticut.”
The Making of the King James Bible: A Monograph, with Comparisons from the Bishops Bible and the Manuscript Annotations of 1602, with an Original Leaf from the Great "She" Bible of 1611

Los Angeles: Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, 1956. Folio. 31pp. One of 290 copies printed at the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. Though this title usually only includes one original leaf, this particular copy contains two, one from the Book of Proverbs and another from the Book of Matthew, both with two woodcut initials. The "Great She Bible of 1611" is really a corrected version printed in 1613 of the "Great He Bible of 1611", in which a typographic error results in the Book of Ruth having a "he", referring to Boaz, placed where a "she", referring to Ruth, should be. The "Great She Bible" is thus the second authorized printing of the King James Bible, with the "He" version being the first. Willoughby's comprehensive monograph on the King James Bible discusses the factors that impacted the first printing, and is illustrated with facsimiles from the 1611 edition. Leaves show some foxing and minor wear to edges, else fine. Bound in quarter cloth and printed boards in glassine. Some rubbing to corners and mark on front board. Near fine overall. Bookplate. (BCC #45; Chalmers 113, p. 84).

        The Angry Red Planet.

Stafford and Co. Ltd, Nottingham and London [1956]. An original and scarce UK quad for the 1959 sci-fi horror 'The Angry Red Planet', an 'Invasion of Mars' film concerning the first manned flight to and exploration of planet Mars. Folded, condition B (fresh, corners clipped). Approx dimensions 40x30 inches, landscape format. The movie was made with a CineMagic technique which was applied for all of the scenes on the surface of Mars. This was an attempt to make the hand drawn animations appear as real as the live action footage; the rat-bat-spider-crab was particularly terrifying, and remains one of the most effective monsters of all time; it later appeared in the music video for Iron Maiden's anthemic single 'The Number of The Beast'. Note on Format; the 'quad' is a vertical view UK movie poster measuring approx. 30 x 40 inches, generally issued folded with one vertical and three horizontal creases. The standard (and most collectible) format for film posters in Britain, being the equivalent of the US 'one-sheet'.

The Making of the King James Bible: A Monograph, with Comparisons from the Bishops Bible and the Manuscript Annotations of 1602, with an Original Leaf from the Great "She" Bible of 1611.
