19 AUTOGRAPHS of EMINENT GUESTS attending a party in honor of PRINCE BERNHARD OF THE NETHERLANDS at the Dakota in NYC. Included among the autographs are those of PRINCE BERNHARD, as well as those of the American magazine magnate HENRY LUCE and the notorious CIA OPERATIVE ENNO HOBBING who, as Bureau Chief of TIME MAGAZINE, led the COUP D'ETAT in GUATEMALA.

[New York]: October 30th, 1956. - - Nineteen autographs penned on a gilt-edged, cream-colored page, 10-3/4 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide, removed from the guest book of Grace Bristed Jackson and C. D. Jackson at the Dakota. Dated "Oct. 30th 1956", the signatures are identified along the top as those of guests present at a "Party in Honour of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. 14 signatures are penned in a column along the left and another 5 signatures, including that of Prince Bernhard, are penned in a column at right. Near fine. Charles Douglas Jackson [known as "C.D."] and his wife Grace Bristed Jackson hosted parties and events at their apartment in the Dakota. Jackson worked on and off at Time magazine in an administrative capacity for many years and was made vice president of Time, Inc. in 1940. He was periodically sent on various diplomatic missions by Eisenhower. He also found time to serve on the boards of several organizations, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Free Europe Committee and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The signatures along the left include those of: 1) Axel Bussche-Streithorst [Axel von dem Bussche] (1919-1993). A World War II German officer who, as part of the German Resistance, planned to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1943. Stationed on the Eastern front, Bussche had witnessed the massacre of over 3,000 Jewish civilians by the SS at the Dubno airport in Poland in 1942. Traumatized by the experience, he joined a resistance group within the army led by Count Stauffenberg. Selected to model new uniforms when Hitler was due to inspect these at his Fuhrerhauptquartier Wolfsschanze in November 1943, Bussche undertook to carry out a suicide bombing to kill the Fuhrer. His plans were thwarted when, the night before the event, an Allied air raid on Berlin destroyed the railway truck transporting the new uniforms. He volunteered to try again but was seriously wounded on the Eastern front in January of 1944, losing one of his legs. He was one of the very few who was not betrayed and thus survived the war. 2) Hamilton Fish Armstrong (1893-1973), was a United States diplomat, author and editor. He worked for the New Republic and served as military attache in Serbia during the First World War. In 1922, Armstrong became editor of "Foreign Affairs", the journal of the Council on Foreign Relations, taking over as editor after Archibald Cary Coolidge's death in 1928. Armstrong authored several books including "The New Balkans" and "Hitler's Reich: The First Phase". 3) Maria de Almagro Abreu. 4) Brooke Astor (1902-2007) was an American philanthropist, socialite and writer. Brooke Astor chaired the Vincent Astor Foundation named after her third husband, the son of John Jacob Astor IV. Her father, John Henry Russell, Jr. was the 16th Commandant of the Marine Corps and Brooke Astor spent much of her childhood in China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and other places where her father was stationed. 5) Henry R. Luce (1898-1967) was one of the most influential persons of his day. The magazine magnate owned such well-known periodicals as Time magazine, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. Born in Tengchow, China to missionary parents he attended the Hotchkiss School and subsequently Yale, where he worked on the school newspapers. Blocked by FDR from covering the front during the Second World War, he was a staunch Republican and blatantly opposed FDR, subsequently appointing Whittaker Chambers as acting Foreign News editor in 1944. As part of the China Lobby he played a major role in shaping American sentiment in support of Chiang Kai-Shek and later demanded that Kennedy invade Cuba. He included Secreteray of State John Foster Dulles and CIA director Allen Dulles among his friends. 6) Hamilton Armstrong. 7) Willy Goudrian. 8) Neil [?]. 9) Enno Hobbing. In his book "A Secret Order: Investigating the High Strangeness and Synchronicity in the JFK Assassination", H.P. Albarelli, Jr. writes the following about CIA operative Enno Hobbing: "In 2 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

About Fine copy (slight color loss to spine folds and crown) of this small, fragile volume, which has become scarce in collectible condition. Shifreen & Jackson A100b. Kearney (Olympia Press) 20. Auer 364. A short novel, celebrating love, art, and the Bohemian life, along with a second story, "Mara-Marignan," both dating from the same period as Tropic of Cancer, when Miller was an obscure, penniless young writer in Paris. A few months after Miller returned to New York, in 1940, flat-broke, a quick moneymaking opportunity arose writing pornography for an Oklahoma erotica collector, named Roy M. Johnson. Early drafts of "Mara-Marignan" and "Quiet Days in Clichy" were the result. Johnson was not impressed; he found Miller's stories to be "too poetic," and the manuscripts went missing--"lost for over ten years," Miller wrote in 1956--then "turned up miraculously." Miller rewrote both stories, in Big Sur, in May of that year. This first edition was published in Paris, in June 1956, with photographs of 1930s Paris (street-scenes of prostitutes; sailors fondling women in cafes, young people flirting, kissing, dancing, and drinking) by Brassai. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Fine-.

A History of The English Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company, 1956–8 - 4 volumes. Octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. Illustrated with maps and diagrams. First editions, first impressions. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War. In The Bottom of my Garden

[New York]: Self-published, circa 1956. First Edition. Very good in paper covered boards with a lithographed, hand-colored illustration on the front board. The binding is sewn. An oblong octavo of 8 1/2 by 11 inches containing 20 lithographed plates on wove paper two of which have some modest hand-coloring. The paper covered boards are soiled and there is some modest foxing. The paper joining the two boards over the spine area is torn and chipped. Although the end sheets show some small spots of foxing, the contents are in excellent condition and are best classified as an erotic picture book. Signed and inscribed "To Frances | Keane" by the author, artist, and in this case, bookbinder and publisher at the lower spine side of the front board. Unpaginaged, but containing 20 plates. Andy Warhol started his art career in New York City in 1949 where he worked as an advertising art director. This item represents one of his first forays into book making. Reportedly this book was created as a promotional item and copies were given to close friends and clients. Copies of this book were often cut up allowing the individual lithographs to be sold separately. As a result, complete copies of the book are uncommon. The book contains only three lines of text all hand written in an exaggerated script by Warhol's mother, Julia Warhola, who, with limited English, undoubtedly had no understanding of the double-entendre meaning of the words she had written.
