From A View To A Kill, Quantum of Solace), Thunderball, The Spy Who loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice, The Man with the Golden Gun

London: Foyle [The Book Club] 1956-1966., 1956. 11 volumes; 8vo. Publisher's hardbacks in dustwrappers. Some toning and and occasional spotting to the cheap paperstock, minor wear as expected, but generally a very good set, housed in a custom-made fleece-lined slipcase. The entire run of the popular British book club editions, which began in 1956 with 'Live and Let Die'. In total eleven of the fourteen James Bond titles were issued in this format and this set is complete as published. The books were offered in this cheaper format, usually one year after the Cape first editions- some share the same Jonathan Cape artwork, but after the 'Thunderball' painting was damaged while on loan in America, Cape would no longer lend out their original art; as such the Book Club commissioned their own action packed and striking cover designs.

Original 1956 Signed Blueprint of Frank Lloyd Wrightís design which is today the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin

Printed Blueprint Signed ìF Ll W / 56î in brown ink in a 1î x 1î brown ink square box shaded in red pencil in the lower left, 56.5î x 18î. Two 2.75î vertical lines have been drawn in red pencil at each end of the 28.5î x 5î architectural drawing in the lower half, captioned ìElevation From Lake Monona Scale: 1/32î = 1í-0îî Lightly printed. Minor soiling and mounting traces at perimeter easily matted over. Fine condition. In 1938, Frank Lloyd Wright proposed a design for a civic auditorium which would link Lake Monona, surrounded on three sides by the city of Madison, Wisconsin, with the State Capitol building two blocks away. Wright had a summer home at Spring Green, 35 miles from Madison. It was defeated at a County Board meeting by one vote. In 1954-1955, in the postwar economic boom, Madison voters approved a bond referendum for a civic center and Wright was chosen as project architect. The original signed blueprint here offered was accomplished in 1956. The Lake Monona project was effectively destroyed the next year by a state law reducing the height of a lakefront building to 20 feet; Wrightís building would have been 60 feet high. Madisonís Mayor called the signing of the bill into law by Republican Gov. Vernon Thomson on September 21, 1957, ìa regrettable insult to Wisconsinís most renowned living citizen.î Wright said that objectors to the civic auditorium had misrepresented the facts, saying that his proposal would not have interfered with the view of Lake Monona from the street above. ìFrom the capitol two blocks away,î explained Wright, ìthere would be no change whatever from the view except a great fountain of gushing water where the unconscious objectors have shown a building.î On this blueprint, viewing the civic auditorium from Lake Monona, the fountain and the Madison State Capitol building can be seen in the distance. After the 1958 elections, in January 1959, Madison-area state legislators introduced a bill which was signed by new Democratic Gov. Gaylord Nelson, repealing the 1957 law. Wright completed his last rendering shortly before his death on April 9, 1959. In 1992, Madison voters narrowly approved the transformation of Wrightís civic center into a convention facility. Construction began in 1994 and in July 1997, the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center opened, 59 years after Frank Lloyd Wrightís inception of the project. ìWith interiors redesigned by Taliesin architect Tony Puttnam, Monona Terrace spans ninety feet out over shimmering waters, incorporating thoroughly modern technology and amenities with the architectÂ¥s signature organic designÃ?î (from

Miles Davis Birdland 1956 Original Vintage German Concert Poster By Gunther Kieser

Birdland 1956, Miles Davis, Lester Young, Bud Powell and The Modern Jazz Quartet, Original Vintage Concert Poster, First Printing, Kongress-Saal, Deutsches Museum, [Munich], Sunday Nov 11 1956, printed by P.R. Wilk, designed by Gunther Kieser. A1 Format (331/8" by 23 3/8"), has been folded, touch of wear to edges, tiny chip to centre top margin, light pencil annotation to verso, else, about fine, bright and unmarked. Stored flat and shipped rolled in a mailing tube. A superb and very scarce example of Gunther Kieser's early jazz poster art, a striking abstract designed exclusively for the German concert presentations of an extended European tour by this all-star ensemble. With his monumental Prestige recordings completed in Oct. 1956, Miles had agreed to headline this month-long package tour, as a star soloist appearing with his fellow luminaries, Lester Young and Bud Powell in various combinations backed by the French pianist Rene Urtreger's Trio, with the Modern Jazz Quartet usually ending the performances. The few recordings from these European concerts mark the only occasions on which Miles is known to have recorded with the great tenor saxophonist Lester Young. Gunther Kieser (1930) is one of Germany's preeminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the fore front of European poster art. Kieser is best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the design work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80s. A very scarce example of Kieser's early jazz poster art in collector's condition. J1787 . About Fine.

"Question of Parity Conservation in Weak Interactions".

Lee and Yang,  "Question of Parity Conservation in Weak Interactions". American Physical Society,  1956.  Physical Review 104 (1) October 1, 1956  Original printed wrappers.  Fine condition.  We offer the entire weekly issue in its (SCARCE) original wrappers. (Original owner's name in ink in top margin of front wrapper.)"Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize for their work "for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles". The work of Yang and Lee came to destroy the "law of conservation of parity," which had been assumed to be a fundamental law of nature; it predicted that beta particles, which are emitted by a radioactive nucleus, would fly off in any direction, regardless of the spin of the nucleus. In 1957 ("Experimental Test of Parity Conservation in Beta Decay"( Physical Review, Feb 1957), using atoms of cobalt-60, W.S. Wu (et alia) showed that beta particles were more likely to be emitted in a particular direction that depended on the spin of the cobalt nuclei. Broken parity (symmetry) essentially means that something virtual (shadowy, but real in a special sense and widely used in physics; it has real physical consequences, since it creates all the forces of nature) has become observable (real in the ordinary everyday sense that it can be detected, measured, observed, and used. "Until 1956 the overwhelming majority of physicist believed that parity conservation is never violated in nature. Any new theory without evidence that went against this ingrained belief would almost certainly be dismissed. The belief in parity conservation was too strong an accepted paradigm to be challenged. Then in 1956 two Chinese physicists Yang and Lee first pointed out the exception and theoretically predicted non-conservation of parity. Initially there was predictable skepticism and it took further convincing work and subsequent experimental verification by a Chinese woman Wu and her colleagues and in 1957 the physicist community abandoned a long held belief in conservation of parity. Yang and Lee were not only vindicated, they received the Nobel Prize in Physics for this intellectual feat."
