        Flight from the Enchanter, The

London: Chatto & Windus, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. A superb First Impression of Murdoch's second novel, following Under the Net. 8vo: 316,[2]pp. Publisher's cinnamon-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped) illustrated by Edward Bawden. Fine, square, tight binding, pages crisp and fresh, in a Fine, bright, completely unfaded example of the magnificent jacket. & Murdoch denied putting friends into her novels, but the model for the enchanter Mischa Fox was the Bulgarian-born, Nobel Prize-winning writer Elias Canetti, Murdoch's lover from January 1953 until late 1955. According to Murdoch's biographer, Peter Conradi, Canetti, the "god-monster of Hampstead . . . represented the artist-as-manipulative-and-sadistic-mythomaniac" in her imagination. He was a cruel and controlling lover who dominated a coterie of enthralled "disciples" and mistresses, a role he reenacts in several of Murdoch's early novels, particularly Flight from the Enchanter, which she dedicated to him.         The Malayan Trilogy, comprising 'Time for a Tiger', 'The Enemy in the Blanket' and 'Beds in the East'

William Heinemann, London 1956-1959 First Editions, first printings of Burgess' first three novels, written "as a sort of gentlemanly hobby, because I knew there wasn't any money in it", when he was serving in Malaya as a teacher and education officer with the British Colonial Service. Individual descriptions as follows: 'Time for a Tiger' (1956). 8vo. 214pp. Blue cloth lettered in gold at spine. Publisher's motif blind-stamped to rear board. A sliver of discolouration to backstrip extremities and a tiny bump to the tip of a single corner. Bookplate to front pastedown. Very good indeed with R.F.Micklewright-designed pictorial dust wrapper, just a little faded at spine panel, and lightly dust marked and nicked at chafed at several edges. 'The Enemy in the Blanket' (1958). 8vo. 221pp. Dark blue cloth lettered and ruled in silver at spine and with publisher's motif blind-stamped to rear board. A small area of discolouration to head of backstrip and a short indentation to upper board. Bookplate to front endpaper. Top edge lightly spotted and dust marked. Binding just a little cocked and pulled, but a lovely bright copy internally, in handsome John Rowland-designed pictorial dust wrapper, predominantly white rear panel a little tanned and dust marked, spine panel lightly toned and chafed at extremities with several tiny slivers of loss. 'Beds in the East' (1959). 8vo. 237pp. Blue cloth, lettered in gold at spine and with publisher's motif blind-stamped to rear board. A light scattering of spotting to top- and fore edge and to one or two preliminary leaves. A very nice, crisp copy in John Rowland-designed pictorial dust wrapper, publisher's red lettering just a little faded at spine panel and with a couple of short closed tears and resulting creases, and a small area of loss to head of spine. Some spotting to wrapper flaps. Really quite a nice example of this uncommon set in handsome non-clipped dust wrappers.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

        Tiger! Tiger!

London: Sidgwick and Jackson [1956], 1st UK Edition. () 232pp. Near fine in very good dust jacket. 12mo. Deep blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Very light bump to bottom of spine. Clean endpapers and clean tight text block (though with some yellowing to the pages due to age). In dust jacket, not price clipped. The jacket has some light wear to the edges and ends of spine (a few small chips and closed tears) as well as some light rubbing and soilling (the spine is slightly darkened). It is a very nice copy. An important science fiction story by the famous American author (though written mostly during his time spent in England). Originally serialized in Galaxy magazine in four parts beginning with the October 1956 issue, the story first appeared in book form in the United Kingdom as Tiger! Tiger! – after William Blake's poem. Known in the US as 'The Stars My Destination' the book anticipated many of the staples of the later cyberpunk movement, for instance the megacorporations as powerful as governments, a dark overall vision of the future and the cybernetic enhancement of the body..

        NIXON

New York: Holt, (1956). First Edition. Hardcover. Spine of book darkened. Very Good in a Near Fine, price-clipped dustwrapper. The first study of this complicated man. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both Toledano and Nixon to editor William Randolph Hearst, Jr., son of William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper despot and subject of Orson Welles's film CITIZEN KANE. It was Hearst who was largely responsible for the Hollywood image of the hard-drinking cynical reporter always in pursuit of breaking news. The younger Hearst shared the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for his interviews with the new Russian leadership, and in 1959 he would cover Nixon's visit to the Soviet Union. Nixon's inscription reads: "To Bill Hearst/who is always a/friend in good or/bad weather -- from/Dick Nixon." Over the course of time, Nixon's attitude toward journalists became much less friendly. A fine association copy.
