Inscribed by Wilson in green fountain pen on the ffe to Spender: "For Stephen / Whose work was one of the main influences in framing the sensibility that produced this book although it cannot be held responsible for the mis-spellings & misquotations / With Affection / Colin". An extraordinary copy of Wilson's important first book published when he was 24, & written in a library during a summer when he slept in the park. "If you get involved with people, you've got to stick to the rules. It's like going to a public school or joining a posh club. If you want the advantages, you have to stick to the rules. Well, I'd rather not join the club. I'll do without the advantages. It's like exhibiting. If you exhibit your work, you put yourself at the mercy of a lot of half-witted bastards who don't know paint from shit. But it's no good complaining about not being understood. If you put your work on show it's like asking people to look at it. And if they make stupid comments, you've got nothing to complain about, because you asked them. Well, so I don't exhibit.       1956. Jazz At The Philharmonic, Original Concert Tour Program, 17th National Tour, 1956. SIGNED at their respective full page, b&w photographs by jazz impresario and originator of the JATP concerts, Norman Granz, and additionally SIGNED by eleven of the tour's jazz luminaries: drummers Jo Jones and Gene Krupa, perennial JATP tour favourite, tenor saxophonist, Illinois Jacquet, members of the Modern Jazz Quartet, pianist, John Lewis, bassist, Percy Heath and drummer, Connie Kay; also SIGNED by two of the great trumpeters in jazz, Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge and by pianist, Oscar Peterson, bassist, Ray Brown and guitarist, Herb Ellis, who together formed one of the finest piano trios in jazz history. This was to be the penultimate U.S. Concert tour series for JATP, although Norman Granz would continue the tradition intermittently, mainly in Europe and Japan until 1983. An extraordinary assemblage of musicians, notable for the presence of the MJQ, making their presumed first JATP tour. A handsome large format concert program, (14" by 11") staple bound wraps, original cover art by David Stone Martin, unpaginated (32pp plus wraps), lavishly illustrated with b&w photos. Previous owner has noted date of concert as Sept. 28 1956 at top of first page. The wraps are slightly loose and lightly rubbed with creasing at the hinge and closed tears to spine ends; mild wear to top of page edges, slight age toning, else very good+, pages are tightly bound, clean and unmarked. The autographs are in ink with the exception of the pencil signature of drummer, Connie Kay, and are near fine to fine, without loss or fading. A highly collectible, vintage concert program with an uncommon group of original autographs, representative of some of the finest jazz musicians of the era. J1777. Signed. Original Wraps. Over the years since publication the Narnia books have joined “Oz”, “Alice” and “Winnie” and ‘Middle-Earth” as a favorite ‘holiday’ spot for imaginative children.         Escape from Five Shadows [Rare Bound Galleys]

      [Boston]: Houghton Mifflin. [1956]. The uncorrected proof copy of the third of his Westerns, which preceded his first mystery by over a decade and his first bestseller by over two decades. Rare: we have never seen another proof copy of any of Leonard's Westerns offered for sale, and Houghton Mifflin was not even routinely doing bound proofs for all its titles at that time. There were probably only a couple of dozen of these produced and, given the format and fragility of this item, it's unlikely that many others have survived, if any. 7" x 11" ringbound galley sheets, printed on rectos only. The label affixed to the cardstock cover gives a publication date of 1955 (the book was actually published in 1956) and, in pencil "May 1." Also in pencil on the front cover label is written "The Westerners" -- an alternate title, or an indication of the genre, for marketing purposes? The covers show some extremely slight creasing; still a remarkably fine copy, with the covers crisp, the fragile plastic ring spine intact. Housed in a custom quarter leather clamshell case. . A study of Chagall's work, the book contains 53 tipped-in full color reproductions.       Washington. July 13, 1956.. [1]p., plus accompanying [1]p. letter. Folio Old fold lines, else fine. Senator John F. Kennedy writes to Louis Ruppel, associate editor of the AMERICAN WEEKLY newspaper in New York, responding to Ruppel's letter, asking if his son can stop by to visit Kennedy. Ruppel writes: "My lawyer- son, Phil goes to Quantico for two weeks on 15 July....I would appreciate your meeting with him if it is at all possible. He is a Captain U.S.M.C.R. and veteran of a rifle platoon command in Korea. He is with Goldwater & Flynn and is also interested in politics." He adds: "Our other son, who is named for your Dad, is a police reporter on the Newark STAR-LEDGER but he ought to be a pretty good political writer by the time you run for President." He also compliments two recent articles published about Kennedy. Senator Kennedy replies: "Many thanks for your recent letter. I hope your son Phil stops by my office during his stay in Quantico as I would very much like to meet him. I also want to thank you for your very generous remarks concerning the articles which appeared in NEWSWEEK and Arthur Krock's column. I am most appreciative." He has signed the letter "Jack," and has written at the bottom: "We expect to adjourn the next few days." Kennedy once worked for Ruppel as a reporter.

Tall, slim 8vo: [8], 9-94pp. Publisher's saffron cloth, the spine lettered in red, the publisher's note tipped in opposite the copyright page; in a pictorial dust jacket, priced 9s/6d, with Becket's photograph on the back panel. A just about Fine copy, square and tight, with offsetting to the end papers and a dusty top edge; in a Near Fine jacket, the spine lightly toned and rubbed at both ends with minor losses (never affecting the lettering or design). Federman & Fletcher 373.1. The title Waiting for Godot describes the action exactly. Vladimir and Estragon, two educated but apparently homeless and unemployed men, have an appointment to meet Godot on a country road. Instead of meeting Godot (about whose person, status and connection with the tramps nothing is learnt, and who in fact never arrives), they encounter another bizarre couple of males: Pozzo, a tyrant, and his “servant” Lucky, whom he drags along on a rope. The play consists of dialogues between each or both of these pairs, ranging from jokes to pass the time through to deep reflections on the problems of human existence. There is hardly any other action at all. . . . What was revolutionary about this play was that it ignored totally the realist convention of 19th and 20th century theatre which demanded that the audience should be able to understand the character and social background and the motivations of the dramatis personae . . . Beckett presented a world in which its reasons could not be traced; a play practically devoid of historical and geographic specifications, over which the questions Why and Wherefore are no sooner asked than evaporated."       [New Haven]:: Yale University. (1956). First edition. INSCRIBED, "To Stuart (W[right]) with admiration and friendship. Red (W[arren])." Wright was a professor and small press publisher of limited editions and, for a time, Warren's executor. The setting of the story is La Rocca, the Warrens' (and later the Cheevers') fortress house in Porto Ercole, Italy. A small book of poems designed, printed, and illustrated by Jane Daggett in the Department of Graphic Arts, School of Design at Yale. Grimshaw estimates that only about 175 copies were printed. Approximately 7 1/2 inches square; 30 pages, including 6 illustrations, bound in pictorial boards and issued without a dust jacket. Edges of spine and corners rubbed, still very good. A scarce "A" item, and rare inscribed. This book is from the collection of Scott and Vivian Donaldson and has their small, tasteful bookplate on back pastedown. Scott is considered one of our leading literary biographers. He has written eight books about 20th-century American authors and is listed among prominent 20th-century Virginia authors by the Virginia Center for the book.

      Los Angeles: United Artists, 1956. Original pressbook for the 1956 film, "A Kiss Before Dying," directed by Gerd Oswald, based on the 1953 novel by Ira Levin. Written for the screen by Lawrence Roman, and starring Robert Wagner, Viriginia Leith, Joanne Woodward, and Mary Astor. Refusing to believe her sister (Joanne Woodward) died of suicide, Ellen (Virginia Leith) sets out to discover the truth, unknowingly becoming involved with the murderer (Robert Wagner). 11 pages, saddle stitched, 11 x 17 inches. Very Good plus condition. Faint horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages. Very minor separation to the hinge fold at the crown, heel, and center. Wrappers are rubbed with pencil marks and partial erasure to the front wrapper. Laid in is a flyer for the film, moderately toned but otherwise Fine, which has caused light offsetting to the last two pages of the pressbook. Silver and Ward, p. 371.

Near fine, small stain at outside edge that is noticeable when book is closed. 12 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches, [104] pages, cloth, Dust Jacket (closed tear on front cover, slight soiling to front and rear cover), Inscribed by Merle Armitage and Brett Weston on dedication page in pen and dated 1958, The first major monograph on Brett Weston written and designed by his long time friend Merle Armitage. Armitage met Brett Weston in the early 1920s when he became close friends with Edward Weston while both were residents of Los Angeles. At the end of his introduction, Armitage reprints a review he wrote of a Brett Weston exhibition held Jake Zeitlin's Los Angeles bookstore in 1930. In a fitting tribute to the photographer, this review prefaces a suite of beautiful reproductions from photographs produced by Weston after twenty-six years of work.

      [New Haven: Yale University Library, 1956].. A significant lot of production material, as below. Variously good to fine. The edition consisted of three hundred copies reproduced in facsimile of the original illustrated manuscript, printed in collotype under the direction of Harold Hugo and Carl P. Rollins, with the plates colored via stencil by Maria Bittner. Present here is a binder's dummy (in full cloth), made up of both colored and uncolored sheets, with annotations on the front endsheet detailing the specifications for the binding materials actually used for the published book. Laid in are six leaves of the illustrations in colored state and four in blue-line proofs, as well as the letterpress colophon (all trimmed slightly smaller than the final textblock). Also present are unbound, untrimmed sheets, two images per sheet (recto and verso) extending to the format markings, including duplicates, as follow: 48 untrimmed sheets of the images in colored state; 33 sheets (numbered in pencil 2 through 35) in mixed colored and uncolored states, trimmed to various sizes; and finally, five sheets bearing the printed colophon on one side and a colored illustration on the verso. There are some minor variations in coloring, suggesting these may have been either test sheets, or possibly rejected sheets.
