Photograph of Will Henry by Arthur W. Knight

Petaluma CA: Arthur Knight. (No date -- circa 1956). First. Large black and white vintage photograph of the author Will Henry, standing with hat in hand, by poet and beat-era anthologist Arthur W. Knight. Image size approximately 13.5" x 16.5", mounted on artist board. Photographer's stamp "Arthur Knight -- Petaluma" on the rear. Fine. Exhibition stamp on the back of the board from when the photo was exhibited in 1956 at the Redwood Empire Camera Club in Santa Rosa, California. Inscribed by Will Henry to Arthur Knight on the artist board below the image: "Thanks, Art -- If only the man measured up to the image! Will Henry -- Clay Fisher." Henry apparently liked the photograph, as it appears (with Knight credited) on many of the dustjackets of his books from this date on. Knight took up photography as a teenager and had some success with literary subjects: his photos appear on more than 200 dustjackets. He later became involved in the beat and counterculture scene and with his wife Kit Knight edited and published numerous works. Henry (whose real name was Henry Allen) wrote many novels, mostly successful westerns, and his stories and books were made into over sixty films. A large and attractive vintage print of the image probably most associated with the author, inscribed to the photographer. .

        The Angry Red Planet

Stafford and Co. Ltd, Nottingham and London [1956], 1956. An original and scarce UK quad for the 1959 sci-fi horror 'The Angry Red Planet', an 'Invasion of Mars' film concerning the first manned flight to and exploration of planet Mars. Folded, condition B (fresh, corners clipped). Approx dimensions 40x30 inches, landscape format, now with loose-backed board stiffener. The movie was made with a CineMagic technique which was applied for all of the scenes on the surface of Mars. This was an attempt to make the hand drawn animations appear as real as the live action footage; the rat-bat-spider-crab was particularly terrifying, and remains one of the most effective monsters of all time; it later appeared in the music video for Iron Maiden's anthemic single 'The Number of The Beast'. Note on Format; the 'quad' is a vertical view UK movie poster measuring approx. 30 x 40 inches, generally issued folded with one vertical and three horizontal creases. The standard (and most collectible) format for film posters in Britain, being the equivalent of the US 'one-sheet'.

        The Fabulous Orson Welles

London: Hutchinson,, 1956. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine in blue. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Tips very lightly rubbed. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with some chips and short closed tears, a crease down the upper panel, and an abrasion to the upper panel. First edition, first impression. Loosely inserted are two signed letters from Welles. The first is a typed letter signed to American journalist Abel Green reading, "Dear Abel, Thank you so much for forwarding that letter about the Melbourne Film Festival. I am so sorry to have missed you and Grace in Rome this year. We were in Spain, shooting television, and only heard about your visit after you had left, all warmest as always, Orson Welles". Green edited Variety magazine for forty years, and after his death Time referred to Variety as the Bible of show business and to Green as its King James. The recipient of the second letter was cinephile Ray Fisher, who was chair of the Melbourne Film Festival organising committee between 1964 and 1983. Welles writes in manuscript, "To Citizen Fisher, Contrary to popular belief this book is still readily available. Don't believe everything you hear on the radio. Read the 'Inquirer'! I am loaning this copy on the condition that it does not finish up in Guilliano's rubbish bin, regards, Orson Welles. P. S. Give my regards to the young man who was pounding on the front door of my L. A. mansion on Franklin Avenue". This is unlikely to be the same copy loaned by Welles, as it bears the ticket of a Melbourne bookseller. An excellent association.

One of the works for which Bellow is best known, critic James Wood declared it to be one of the great works of Twentieth Century Literature. The title novella, which presents one day in the life of salesman Tommy Wilhelm, a middle-aged worldly failure, provided the basis for the 1986 movie of the same name starring Robin Williams and Jerry Stiller. Three times a winner of the National Book Award for Fiction ("The Adventures of Augie March", "Herzog" and "Mr. Sammler's Planet"), Saul Bellow also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (for "Humboldt's Gift") and the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture that are combined in his work". The Press Release issued in connection with his 1976 Nobel Prize noted particularly the "mature mastery" of "Seize the Day" and noted that "[w]ith its exemplary command of subject and form, this last novel has received the accolade as one of the classic works of our time." Signed copies of the book are quite scarce. This copy belonged to actor Jack Palance has the bookplate from the 2006 sale of his personal property is loosely laid in. A Very Good + (Near Fine for this title) copy of one of the 20th Century's major works, with an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, SIGNED BY SAUL BELLOW. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE.

A superb First Impression of Murdoch's second novel, following Under the Net. 8vo: 316,[2]pp. Publisher's cinnamon-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped) illustrated by Edward Bawden. Fine, square, tight binding, pages crisp and fresh, in a Fine, bright, completely unfaded example of the magnificent jacket. & Murdoch denied putting friends into her novels, but the model for the enchanter Mischa Fox was the Bulgarian-born, Nobel Prize-winning writer Elias Canetti, Murdoch's lover from January 1953 until late 1955. According to Murdoch's biographer, Peter Conradi, Canetti, the "god-monster of Hampstead . . . represented the artist-as-manipulative-and-sadistic-mythomaniac" in her imagination. He was a cruel and controlling lover who dominated a coterie of enthralled "disciples" and mistresses, a role he reenacts in several of Murdoch's early novels, particularly Flight from the Enchanter, which she dedicated to him.
