        Forbidden Planet

Farrar Straus and Cudahy, New York 1956 - Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 184 pages; 1st edition. Philip MacDonald's novel treatment of the Cyril Hume screenplay for the grounmdbreaking science fiction film starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen. A snug clean copy in original dust jacket with $3.00 issue price intact to unclipped front flap. Spine just a hair cocked but overall the book is in wonderful condition. The dust jacket is crisp edged and clean but has had the unfortunate attention of silverfish to all the white title lettering of the spine panel. The damage is confined to the surface of the spine panel and very largely follows the outline of the lettering with something in the color/ink clearly not to the bugs' liking. The result is a sort of nearly attractive crazing to the title lettering at spine. The front and rear panels are bright and clean with just trace helf rubbing at edges. The terminal leaf of the novel is the Postscript of pages 183 and 184. In this copy it is a cancel (that is, a page pasted in to the existing binding) suggesting that the Postcript was added after the book had already been printed. There is a small snag to the paper in the gutter of this final leaf, apparently caused by the binder's glue used tipping the page in. VG++/G+ [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The first Japanese computers were designed and built in the latter half of the 1950s, beginning with the relay-based ETL-Mark 2, the first full-scale programmable computer in Japan (the ETL-Mark 1, built in 1952, was a prototype used only for tests and experiments; see Okoma 2000, 420). The ETL-Mark 2 is described here, along with eight other Japanese computers: the FACOM, the FUJIC (Japan's first stored-program computer, completed in March 1956), the TAC (begun in 1952 and completed in 1959), the ETL-Mark 3, the Osaka University electronic computer, the Tokyo University Parametron computer, the NTL Parametron computer, and the Parametron PD-16.         The Beast of Hollow Mountain

Display Productions Ltd. [1956]. Display Productions Ltd. [1956], 1956. An original and scarce UK quad for United Artists' 1956 western sci-fi comedy horror (that's a fine genre crossover), starring Guy Madison. Folded, condition A (fresh). Approx dimensions 40x30 inches, landscape format, now with loose-backed board stiffener. This B-movie would have had a small release in the UK, and as such, original posters especially in such fine condition, are scarce. One Day After A Million Years It Came Out Of Hiding... An American cowboy living in Mexico discovers his cattle is being eaten by a dinosaur. As one does (keep off the moonshine, kid). Although low budget, 'The Beast from Hollow Mountain' was innovative, being the first feature film in color and widescreen to feature stop-motion composites (filmed in'Regiscope'). Note on Format; the 'quad' is a vertical view UK movie poster measuring approx. 30 x 40 inches, generally issued folded with one vertical and three horizontal creases. The standard (and most collectible) format for film posters in Britain, being the equivalent of the US 'one-sheet'.

        This Is Tomorrow

London: The Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1956. London: The Whitechapel Art Gallery,, 1956. Edited by Theo Crosby. Designed by Edward Wright. Square octavo.         Profiles In Courage

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956.. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by John F. Kennedy on the front free endpaper, "To Barry Shear, with thanks and very best wishes John Kennedy." The recipient, Barry Shear was a television and film producer closely involved with the production of the 1960 Democratic National Convention, where he had this copy signed. Light wear, near fine in a bright dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice association copy. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

        Mies Van Der Rohe (Signed)

Chicago: Paul Theobald, 1956. Chicago: Paul Theobald, 1956. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/very good. Clothbound quarto. 200 pp. Illustrated with numerous black and white photographs. First edition of this monograph on Van Der Rohe. A very good copy in very good price-clipped dustwrapper. This is a special copy of what would otherwise be a fairly ordinary book. This copy is not only SIGNED by Van Der Rohe (as well as Hilberseimer), but has also been SIGNED BY OVER 80 other architects, employees, friends, and or students or disciples of Van Der Rohe who all came together at one time to each sign this copy. The date of this ceremonial signing is unknown, but may have taken place in Sept. 1960 (the date Hilberseimer has written under his signature). It is also the year that Van Der Rohe was chosen by the American Institute of Architects for their Gold Medal Award for lifetime achievement in the field of architecture. It would not be too much to speculate that this group of his friends and colleagues came together at or around the time of his award to celebrate his life and career. A truly unique copy.

        Diamonds are Forever

London: Jonathan Cape, 1956. London: Jonathan Cape, 1956 First edition, first printing of the fourth James Bond 007 adventure. Publisher's black cloth, with diamond pattern stamped in blind and diamond illustration stamped in silver to the front board, spine lettered in silver; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Pat Marriott, with an illustration of a woman wearing a diamond brooch to the front panel, spine and front panel lettered in pink and white, portrait photograph of Fleming by Douglas Glass to the rear panel. A very good copy, with some very minor wear to the spine ends, the slightest hint of offsetting to the free endpapers; unclipped dust jacket, with wear and minor chipping to the extremities, unfaded spine, a few light spots of soiling to the rear panel, small tape reinforcements to the jacket verso, bright panels. Overall, a handsome copy. Diamonds are Forever takes British Secret Service agent James Bond first to Sierra Leone and then to the United States in an attempt to thwart an illegal diamond smuggling trade. Impersonating the captured courier Peter Frank, Bond infiltrates the smuggling ring, where he meets the beautiful Tiffany Case, an American with a dark past. Additionally, Bond is assisted by Felix Leiter, a member of the United States Secret Service, who previously appeared in Live and Let Die. Despite his British citizenship, Fleming's "familiarity with many aspects of American life, shiny and shady, gives cold actuality to the most exciting and ingenious story he has written." Additionally, Fleming's background research for this novel, specifically the interviews he conducted with the International Diamond Security Organisation, ultimately formed the basis for his later non-fiction work The Diamond Smugglers. In 1971, Diamonds are Forever was adapted into the seventh Bond film, which starred Sean Connery as 007 and featured the iconic theme song "Diamonds are Forever" performed by Shirley Bassey. Interestingly, Connery was brought back to play Bond after being replaced by George Lazenby for the sixth film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, only to be replaced again in the following film, Live and Let Die, which would introduce Roger Moore as the new Bond.. Illus. by Marriott, Pat. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

        Quiet Days in Clichy

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1956. Paris: The Olympia Press, 1956 Illustrated with black and white photographs by Brassaï (Gyula Halász). First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Miller: "For / Michael Hargraves / [ rule ] / 11/3/78 " to the front free endpaper. Brassaï signature tipped in to the front free endpaper. Publisher's pictorial wrappers designed by T. Tajiri, with blue, yellow, and gray geometric illustrations, lettered in black. A good copy, with some wear and light rubbing to the extremities and hinges, minor vertical creasing to the front panel and spine, minor toning to the spine, a few hints of light soiling to the otherwise clean panels, spine starting inside the front cover, otherwise sturdy spine, front panel detached, rear panel starting at the head and tail, former ownership inscriptions to the rear free endpaper, a few scattered hints of light spotting, otherwise bright and fresh pages. A clean and presentable copy. Quiet Days in Clichy is an autobiographical novella by Henry Miller based on the author's time living as a Parisian literary expatriate in Clichy with fellow author Alfred Perlès. Due to its descriptions of youthful promiscuity, Quiet Days in Clichy was not published in the United States by Grove Press until 1965 - almost a decade after this true first edition - and was made possible by Miller's victory in the obscenity trial for his 1934 novel The Tropic of Cancer. The novel follows the fictional American expatriates Joey and Clark (representative of Miller and Perlès, respectively) as they travel around Paris looking for food, women, and excitement. While the characters and events of the novel are fictional, Quiet Days in Clichy provides a unique, personal insight into the daily lives of the literary expatriates in Paris during the inter-war period- a notorious group that also included Oscar Wilde, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and Ezra Pound, among others. Similarly, Hungarian photographer Gyula Halász, who produced work under the pseudonym Brassaï, was a Parisian expatriate who was both demonstrative of the Hungarian artists who flourished in Paris during this time period and was a close friend of both Miller and Perlès.. Illus. by Brassaï. Signed by Author and Illustrator. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Good.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1956]. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,. [1956]. boards.. Just a touch of fraying to boards at upper spine end, a fine copy in. good or better dust jacket with age-tanning with show through on. spine and rear panels and soiling to rear panel. (#148618). First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Clarke to his friend "Bay" [Baird Searles] on the front free endpaper. A completely revised and expanded version of Clarke's first published novel, AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT (1948; 1953). "Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 (1968) is one of the most famous computer stories, but his THE CITY AND THE STARS (1956) may well be the profound artistically successful work of cybernetic fiction ... [It] is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of the imagination in all the literature that I am considering. Beyond imagining how computers might transform a society, Clarke also dramatizes the philosophical implications of life in a totally structured society. The novel is even more deserving of commendation because it is an early cybernetic novel, and computers and information theory were recent developments when it was written." - Warrick, The Cybernetic Imagination in Science Fiction, pp. 166-70. This novel "is perhaps his most characteristic and most enduring." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 374-7. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-245.         Man'chzhuriia glazami okhotnika [Manchuria through the eyes of a hunter]

[Sydney or Brisbane], [1956]. [Sydney or Brisbane], [1956]. Small octavo (17.5 x 13.5 cm). Original printed wrappers; 157, [2] pp. Printed on heavy coated paper; eight full-page illustrations, including two portraits of the author, drawings of the Man'chzhurian countryside, and a photograph of the author with a dead Manchurian (or Siberian) tiger. Light wear to wrappers; owner inscription; about very good.& A rare collection of short stories about the life of Russian hunters and trappers in Northern China in the 1920s and 30s, which reveal a deep knowledge of the Manchurian countryside, natural life, as well as the habits and dialects of the local population. According to a short preface by A. S. Lukashin, "Gomboev began to earn his bread through the arduous and dangerous work of a hunter and trapper [...] He spent seventeen years on the eastern line of the Chinese Eastern Railroad, gathering furs, wild animals, and birds in the primeval forests of the Manchurian taiga, the Laolin and Zhang Guangcai mountain ranges in the Jilin province. [...] He recorded his observations and hunting episodes in his diary, and now, living in remote Australia, he decided to publish the most interesting memories using his diary." A fascinating document of the complex cultural affiliations between the Russians and the Chinese in the early twentieth century. Presumably published in Sydney or Brisbane in 1956 (according to an orphaned Worldcat record); we were unable to find further information on the author, Gomboev. No copies in KVK, OCLC.

[...]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. IV. 1956). - Rudolf von Eichthal - während des Ersten Weltkriegs Oberst und Generalstabschef in Südtirol, Rußland und auf dem Balkan - war nach Ende des Krieges als Schriftsteller und Musiker tätig.
