Collins, London 1956 - Original dustjacket artwork for the First British Edition of Calvino's first novel. Gouache on artboard, with the image measuring 9.5 X 12 inches and the board measuring 10.5 X 15 inches. A colorful and visually stunning piece, signed by artist Trevor Denning near the lower right corner. Brieft pencilled notation regarding measurments on the lower margin, with the publisher, author, and translator's names overlaid and mounted to the piece on thick cardstock. The printers' instruction sheet for Collins is handwritten on pink stock, affixed on the verso. 'The Path to the Nest of Spiders' is told from a child's perspective. Calvino paints the trauma of war torn Italy using a variety of impressive characters, namely a young boy and his teenage sister, who are depicted on the jacket. In our experience, the British Edition of the book is quite uncommon, with few copies offered on the market - collectable or otherwise. The only original jacket artwork we have seen for one of Calvino's books, and quite dazzling in comparison to its American counterpart. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1956–8 - 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines gilt, red top stain. With the dust jackets. Top-stain variably faded, jackets slightly rubbed and with a few very minor splits, internally clean and bright, a very good set. All volumes illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations – the British Empire and the United States – was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.         A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

Cassell and Company Ltd., London 1956 - Here is a stunning British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The first British edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets. These sets commonly suffer from significant fading, wear, soiling, and spotting, including spotting and fading of the red-stained top edges. Here is a near-fine plus set of four British first edition, first printings in fine dust jackets. All four dust jackets are unclipped and complete, with vividly bright, entirely unfaded spines that show no trace of the usual dulling. No losses. The only dust jacket flaws noted are minor wrinkling at the Volume IV spine ends and fractional wear and a small mark at the head of the Volume I spine. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The red cloth bindings are uniformly bright, tight, and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents are uniformly bright with absolutely no spotting and no previous owner inscriptions. Even the fore edges are clean and free of spotting. The red stained top edges are sunned to dark pink on Volumes II-IV and to light pink on Volume I. Si tratta della 2a edizione di uno scritto definito come testo base sulla sacralità monarchica francese. The Goon Show: Series Seven, Episode Four: The Macreekie Rising Of '74

Np [BBC], London 1956 - 23 mimeographed pp., secured with split pin to top left. Revisions, annotations and doodles throughout, some dampstaining to upper half. First edition. CO-WRITER LARRY STEPHENS' COPY, WITH HIS OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE TO FRONT PAGE AND WITH HIS REVISIONS AND ELABORATE DOODLES THROUGHOUT. 'Larry was an ex-commando captain, who had seen some tough service in the Far East. He had a natural flair for comedy scriptwriting and shared with the Goons their irreverence and sense of the ridiculous, and also their artistic and musical leanings. He was both an able pianist and a meticulous illustrator of the definitive Goon character, with which he was wont to adorn the pages of his script.' (Jimmy Grafton, The Goon Show Companion). Larry Stephens is one of the more elusive figures in British comedy history. He and Spike Milligan were kindred spirits. Both were jazz fanatics (Stephens was a skilled pianist); both had faced the terror of war (Stephens as a Commando Captain); both battled personal demons. Stephens began his comedy career writing material for his close friend, the yet-to-be-famous Tony Hancock, but by 1951 had found his spiritual home at The Goon Show. He was a rock for the famously unstable Spike Milligan, able most weeks to distil the essence of Spike's madness into a workable Goon Show script. Stephens' ability to speak fluent Milligan made their writing partnership the most reliably productive on the show, and is also the main reason why the short film The Case of the Mukkinese Battlehorn comes closest of all visual adaptations to capturing the almost abstract imaginary universe of the Goons. But Stephens was an alcoholic, and his excessive drinking led to battles with the BBC as early as Series 2 -- and also to his tragically early death from a cerebral haemorrhage in January 1959, at the age of thirty-five. Stephens' absent-minded habit of doodling Goonish caricatures on his scripts is well documented (see above), but examples rarely appear on the open market. The script offered here carries some excellent examples, notably the full-page rendering of 'Xerxes Print, Horse-Plucker-In-Ordinary'. The dampstaining (which has not affected the doodles) seems to have taken place a long time ago: Stephens' name on the front page is blanched slightly, but is perfectly legible. A recording of this show is held in the BBC Sound Archives. Spike Milligan was unwell at the time of recording, and does not appear; his place was taken by George Chisholm. An extremely rare and highly desirable piece of British comedy history.

        Profiles In Courage.

Harper & Brothers, New York 1956 - First edition. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author to Massachusetts Senator Leverett Saltonstall, "To Senator Saltonstall- with the very highest regards of his colleague John Kennedy." Leverett Saltonstall was the senior senator of Massachusetts while, John Kennedy was the junior senator. An excellent copy in a bright near fine dust jacket. Saltonstall served as Republican Whip from 1949-1957 and as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1953-1955. Saltonstall attended the wedding of John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, and the two served together in the Senate from 1953 to 1960. Saltanstall and Kennedy worked together closely over the course of several years, as evidenced of one of their constituents thought the two had an even closer relationship, mistakenly assuming Saltonstall to be Kennedy's uncle. "If you are ready to admit it," Kennedy kidded in a 1963 letter, "I am." An excellent association copy. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."         1) Three models for the description of language. (2) The zero error capacity of a noisy channel. (3) The logic theory machine.

1956 - (1) Chomsky, Noam (1928- ). Three models for the description of language. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 113-24. (2) Shannon, Claude E. The zero error capacity of a noisy channel. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 8-19. (3) Newell, Allen & H. A. Simon. The logic theory machine. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 61-79. Whole number. Original green printed wrappers. 278 x 218 mm. (1) First edition. Chomsky's revolutionary investigations of the underlying structures of natural languages were first presented in the above paper, read at a symposium on information theory held at MIT a few months before the publication of his Syntactic Structures . In the paper Chomsky introduced two key concepts, the first being "Chomsky's hierarchy" of syntactic forms, which has been widely applied in the construction of artificial computer languages. "The Chomsky hierarchy places regular (or linear) languages as a subset of the context-free languages, which in turn are embedded within the set of context-sensitive languages also finally residing in the set of unrestricted or recursively enumerable languages. By defining syntax as the set of rules that define the spatial relationships between the symbols of a language, various levels of language can be also described as one-dimensional (regular or linear), two-dimensional (context-free), three-dimensional (context sensitive) and multi-dimensional (unrestricted) relationships. From these beginnings, Chomsky might well be described as the 'father of formal languages'" (Lee 1995, 164).The second concept presented here is Chomsky's transformational-generative grammar theory, which attempts to define rules that can generate the infinite number of grammatical (well-formed) sentences possible in a language, and seeks to identify rules (transformations) that govern relations between parts of a sentence, on the assumption that beneath such aspects as word order a fundamental deep structure exists. As Chomsky expressed it in his abstract of the present paper,"We investigate several conceptions of linguistic structure to determine whether or not they can provide simple and "revealing" grammars that generate all of the sentences of English and only these. We find that no finite-state Markov process [a random process whose future probabilities are determined by its most recent values] that produces symbols with transition from state to state can serve as an English grammar. We formalize the notion of "phrase structure" and show that this gives us a method for describing language which is essentially more powerful. We study the properties of a set of grammatical transformations, showing that the grammar of English is materially simplified if phrase-structure is limited to a kernel of simple sentences from which all other sentences are constructed by repeated transformation, and that this view of linguistic structure gives a certain insight into the use and understanding of language" (p. 113). Minsky 1963, 484. Origins of Cyberspace 531. (2) First Edition. "The zero error capacity C0 of a noisy channel is defined to be the least upper bound of rates at which it is possible to transmit information with zero probability of error. Various properties of C0 are studied; upper and lower bounds and methods of evaluation of C0 are given. Inequalities are obtained for the C0 relating to the 'sum' and 'product' of two given channels. The analogous problem of zero error capacity C0F for a channel with a feedback link is considered. It is shown that while the ordinary capacity of a memoryless channel with feedback is equal to that of the same channel without feedback, the zero error capacity may be greater. A solution is given to the problem of evaluating C0F" (p. 8). Shannon 1993, no. 109. Origins of Cyberspace 890.(3) Newell and Simon's logic theory machine (LT), first described in this paper, is a computer program that discovers [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
