[Photojournalism][Six-Day War][Iron Curtain] Photo Album Compiled by American Journalist Depicting Soviet Europe and the Six Day War.

Eastern Europe And Israel. 1956-1967. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 9¾” x 13”. Steel spiral-bound artist's sketchbook. 48 leaves with 99 black and white and 63 color photographs inserted into corner mounts. Photos measure from 2¾” x 4” to 5” x 7” and some are captioned either on the page or on photo verso. Album good: cover and several leaves detached, photos generally very good plus to near fine with several overexposed; lacking ten photos. A collection of photographs by a journalist with an eye for composition and a nose for action. Russ Braley was a reporter for over 40 years, and these photos were taken while he was the Germany correspondent for the New York Daily News. The album starts with four photos of the Hungarian revolution of 1956, all showing armed men during a respite in fighting. Braley also shows Hungary in other years with shots of the secret police, huge crowds at political rallies, street scenes, and a couple of Nikita Khruschev amidst adoring throngsThere are some pictures of Moscow in 1960 that include the subway and the Kremlin. Several show the Berlin Wall in 1962 and 1964 while others in East Berlin include street scenes and people dancing. Braley depicts Romania in 1966 with women planting flower beds in Bucharest, street scenes, and an excellent image of a woman swinging a pickaxe alongside men working on a railroad. About half the album is devoted to Israel starting with Eilat in May, 1967. More than one photo here has captions regarding “Beatniks” living in shanties on Eilat Beach before the war. Others show the inside of a restaurant, the desalinization plant, and some street scenes. At least 47 photos depict the Six-Day War. Braley joined another journalist, Shelby Scates, mid-war, going through the West Bank in a rented Ford given to Scates by Bill Mauldin. Scates recounts their time together in his War and Politics by Other Means: A Journalist's Memoir (University of Washington Press: 2015). They watched the invasion of Syria from the Kfar Blum kibbutz, ultimately getting caught in the crossfire: “Three grim looking farmers greeted us under the struggling shade trees at Kefar Blum. The other members of this commune were tucked away in bunkers. The first sounds, like an orchestra warming, were screams from three Israeli Mysteres, slashing down with bombs for Tel Azaziat, the Syrian fortification a few hundred feet above and several kilometers away from Kefar Blum. The Israeli column reached halfway to Tel Azaziat before the first Syria shells came down on or toward Kefar Blum. I dove for the slit trench. Braley and Austrian landed on top of me. The hour that followed was an unblended symphony of incoming shells—heavy artillery, light artillery, and mortars. They seemed to fall all about us, reaching for the nearby road and the Jordan River bridge apparently . . . Braley, veteran of our Pacific War, said, 'I never went through anything like this in the Philippines.' We jumped from the trench and ran toward the German Ford . . . I floorboarded the Ford, so we bounced over the shellpocked byroad, then sped over the highway to Tiberias. ”Images of the war show soldiers and a destroyed plane at Rafah, destruction at Tel Katzir, and men in trenches at Kfar Blum. Others show Israeli military vehicles on the way to Kfar Blum, helicopters in flight, and soldiers celebrating in Syria. There are also photos of the dead and wounded, prisoners in Syria, and Jordanian refugees at the Allenby bridge. An astounding mix of well composed imagery documenting war, culture and daily life in hotbeds of social and military conflict.         A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: The Educational Book Company Ltd, 1956–58 - 4 volumes, large octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt-panelled spines with red leather labels lettered in gilt, front covers lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges blue, blue and white endbands. Very light rubbing to labels and very minor markings to covers, else an excellent copy. With plates, diagrams and tables throughout. The Chartwell Edition, the first illustrated edition of Churchill's famous history, "published simultaneously in Britain on a subscription basis" (Woods). Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations – the British Empire and the United States – was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship". "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War. Cohen 267.2 "second (first illustrated) edition"; Woods A138(a).

Maffei, Munari. I libri, p. 90. Italiano

        Earth vs. The Flying Saucers.

Printed by 'La Palette', Brussells. [1956] - A scarce original Belgian mid-size / window card style poster for the 1956 sci-fi movie 'L'Invasion Des Soucoupes Volantes' from Columbia Pictures, directed by Fred F. Sears, and with groundbreaking flying saucer effects created by Ray Harryhausen. Folded once (almost always issued folded!), condition A. 14x 22 inches approx. One of the best of the alien invasion films of the 50s, and a box office hit. This was Oscar-winning animator Rah Harryhausen's second film in partnership with producer Charles H. Schneer, following 'It Came from Beneath the Sea' (1955). His other major films include Mighty Joe Young (1949), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), One Million Years B.C. (1966), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974) and Clash of the Titans (1981). Note on Format; Belgian posters come in three primary sizes, with the 14x22 being the mid-size style. Similar to a US window card, but printed on thinner paper (and therefore fragile). A popular format with collectors.

        The Angry Red Planet.

Stafford and Co. Ltd, Nottingham and London [1956]. An original and scarce UK quad for the 1959 sci-fi horror 'The Angry Red Planet', an 'Invasion of Mars' film concerning the first manned flight to and exploration of planet Mars. Folded, condition B (fresh, corners clipped). Approx dimensions 40x30 inches, landscape format. The movie was made with a CineMagic technique which was applied for all of the scenes on the surface of Mars. This was an attempt to make the hand drawn animations appear as real as the live action footage; the rat-bat-spider-crab was particularly terrifying, and remains one of the most effective monsters of all time; it later appeared in the music video for Iron Maiden's anthemic single 'The Number of The Beast'.Note on Format; the 'quad' is a vertical view UK movie poster measuring approx. 30 x 40 inches, generally issued folded with one vertical and three horizontal creases. The standard (and most collectible) format for film posters in Britain, being the equivalent of the US 'one-sheet'.

        Lee Oswald

, [1956]. [1956]. Offered is one piece of the 19 remaining pieces from Lee Harvey Oswald’s electric football game.Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother, Mrs. Marguerite Oswald, testified before the President’s Commission on the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Washington, D.C., on the morning of February 12, 1964. Present were Chief Justice Earl Warren, Chairman; Representative Hale Boggs and Representative Gerald R. Ford, members. Also present were J. Lee Rankin, general counsel; Wesley J. Liebeler, assistant counsel; and John F. Doyle, attorney for Mrs. Marguerite Oswald.Excerpt from Mrs. Oswald’s testimony: ““Lee was a very quiet and studious boy. None of my children gave me any trouble, thank God. We have no police record, sir, or anything like that. And the children were always more or less home. And particularly Lee. Lee would go to the movies, and things like that. He was a normal boy. But when he was home, he was most happy. And I am of this disposition. He could keep himself occupied - - reading and when he watched a football game on television, he would have the score pad, and things of that sort. And so he was quite happy in his own way ... While Lee was working for Tujague & Co. he started to have a bank account, and it was in a Homestead. I do not know the name, but it was on Canal Street, 900 or 100 block of Canal Street, because it was even with Exchange Place. And he started to save his money ... Are we in 1955 in New Orleans? Yes. No, 1956 this would be. January, 1956--Lee took his money out of the Homestead, which was approximately $150, or something like that. And Lee Harvey Oswald bought an electric football machine cost approximately $10. He bought a bow and arrow set--maybe about $6 or $7. And he bought a gun.”Accompanied by a signed statement of Robert L. Oswald, brother of Lee Harvey Oswald: “To Whom It May Concern: My brother Lee was born in New Orleans in 1939. Lee and my mother moved back to New Orleans from New York City in January 1954 when Lee was 14. It was while he was living in New Orleans that Lee bought an electric football game. When I was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in July 1955, I settled in Fort Worth, Texas. In the Summer of 1956, Mother and Lee moved from New Orleans to Ft. Worth where we shared an apartment. Over the years, a few football player pieces were lost. I now transfer ownership of the remaining 19 football player pieces bought by and belonging to Lee to John Reznikoff of University Archives in Westport, Connecticut.”

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1956–8 - 4 volumes, octavo (235 × 150 mm). Late 20th-century red crushed half morocco, red cloth sides, gilt panelled spines, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. Spines uniformly sunned, a little spotting to edges. An excellent set, attractively bound. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. First editions, first impressions. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.
