[Bi-weekly Newspapers]: Incomplete Run of Caisson (29 issues)

Camp Younghans, Japan: 1st Cavalry Division Artillary, 1956. Very Good. Mimeographed magazine. Stapled wrappers. 29 issues: 16-42; 44, 46, [47] (designated as Vol. 4, no. 1). Variant and irregular pagination ranging between 18 to 58 pages. The first 22 issues are crudely mimeographed and mostly illustrated with amateur drawings; the last seven are slickly printed and heavily illustrated with photographs. Age-toning, a few pages detached but they appear complete, some issues with punch holes in the upper margins, overall very good. The newspaper covers current events, new orders, camp sports, movies and music, book reviews, etc., and is heavy on sophomoric Army-themed cartoons. After service in Korea, and then as part of a blocking force to dissuade the Soviet's desire to annex Hokkeido, the 1st Cavalry Division Artillery moved to Camp Younghans, a former Japanese Army Camp near the town of Jinmachi in Yamagata Prefecture on the island of Honshu. Rare. OCLC locates no copies.

Zeichnungen - Drawings. (Mit einem Text von Max Bill).

Bern, Sprial Press und New York, Wittenborn and Company. (1956). (Eugen Gomringer in: Das Werk. Jahrgang 44, Heft 9, 1957). A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: The Educational Book Company Ltd,, 1956–58. 4 volumes, large octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt-panelled spines with red leather labels lettered in gilt, front covers lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges blue, blue and white endbands. With plates, diagrams and tables throughout. Very light rubbing to labels and very minor markings to covers, else an excellent copy. The Chartwell Edition, the first illustrated edition of Churchill's famous history, "published simultaneously in Britain on a subscription basis" (Woods). Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations – the British Empire and the United States – was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship". "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

Zoo Quest to Guiana [with] Zoo Quest for a Dragon [with] Zoo Quest in Paraguay [with] Quest in Paradise [with] Zoo Quest to Madagascar [with] Quest under Capricorn. THE 'ZOO QUEST' SERIES COMPLETE IN DUSTWRAPPERS

Lutterworth Press,, [1956-63]. 6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispieces and very numerous coloured and monochrome plates throughout, neat signature on front free endpaper of first volume; original cloth (green/red/green/red/blue/green respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper, the wrappers mildly chipped at extremities but with no major loss. A bright, fresh set in the original colourful wrappers of Attenborough's earliest books, recording his 'Zoo Quest' animal-foraging expeditions in many different territories. Well-illustrated and delightfully written, these early titles display much of the talent and infectious charm that has since made their author a naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of world renown. The series captures well the appeal of his first-ever television series 'Zoo Quest' that ran on the BBC from 1954-1964. It also gave rise, incidentally (in those far-off pre-computer days), to a highly popular board game! The sequence comprises 'Zoo Quest to Guiana' (1956), 'Zoo Quest for a Dragon' (1957), 'Zoo Quest to Paraguay' (1959), 'Quest in Paradise' (1960), 'Zoo Quest to Madagascar' (1961) and 'Quest under Capricorn' (1963). Two omnibus volumes of extracts were published for a new generation of readers in the 1980s. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE.

Proceedings of the Round Table Conference on Genetic Aspects of Virus-Host Cell Relationships with Particular Reference to Polioviruses, February 23-24, 1956, Roosevelt Hotel, New York City

The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, New York 1956 - White plastic comb binding, stiff pebbled gray printed paper covers, 148 pp. Very good, light wear, name stamp of Julius Youngner on cover, and 'Restricted not for publicity or release' also stamped on cover. Laid in are several pages of (tanning) notepaper with notations and figures by Youngner. Sabin was apparently the organizer of this conference as he supplies two papers and the Memorandum for participants in the 'Genetics Conference.' Youngner represented the Salk faction; he was the chief developer of the Pitt vaccine alongside Salk; Sabin was Salk's chief rival in developing an alternative -- and much more widely used, eventually -- form of the vaccine. Very RARE with no copies in OCLC, and probably printed in an edition of no more than 100 copies; only about 40 scientists attended this session. By this time, polio vaccines had undergone a number of nationwide tests, but this dates from the earliest years of the development of the polio vaccines. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
