New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1956] - Octavo, boards. First edition. A completely revised and expanded version of Clarke's first published novel, AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT (1948; 1953). "Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 (1968) is one of the most famous computer stories, but his THE CITY AND THE STARS (1956) may well be the profound artistically successful work of cybernetic fiction . [It] is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of the imagination in all the literature that I am considering. Beyond imagining how computers might transform a society, Clarke also dramatizes the philosophical implications of life in a totally structured society. The novel is even more deserving of commendation because it is an early cybernetic novel, and computers and information theory were recent developments when it was written." - Warrick, The Cybernetic Imagination in Science Fiction, pp. 166-70. This novel "is perhaps his most characteristic and most enduring." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 374-7. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-245. Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 22. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with some age-tanning, mostly internal, but with some show through on white spine panel lettering. A very nice copy.       n. p. 1956 - 64 leaves, plus 8 unused leaves at rear, containing 363 letters or ~600+ typed/handwritten pages, inside their original envelopes; envelopes affixed by their back panels to the leaves, usually three to a page and in chronological order. Ephemera varies from single-sheet cards and a telegram printed recto only to 66 pp tourist brochures, etc. Album: 14-5/8" x 11". Individual letter size varies somewhat, most ~9-1/2" x 6-1/4"; ephemera ranges from a 1-3/4" x 3-5/8" business card to 7-1/2" x 5-1/4" tourist guides to a 12-1/2" x 9-1/4" "Shopping News" brochure. Sizeable collection of letters and some ephemera sent from USMC Major Ray W. Arnold, while stationed in Korea and Japan, to his wife, Martha Rose Arnold, at their home in Akron, Ohio, dated September 15, 1955 to November 28, 1956. The letters primarily reveal the everyday workings of military life in post-war South Korea and Japan, from Ray's outings and frustrations with fellow service members, to projects he works on (including regulations for the dependents of USMC members, an accomplishment in which he seems to have taken particular pride), to minor thefts, film showings, etc. Limited attention is also given to the interactions between Ray/ the US military and the South Koreans with whom they came into contact. Ephemera, primarily tourist-type brochures, etc. from an apparent trip to Hong Kong, has been laid in and/or inserted into slots on a few pages; one ad for a Japanese silk and jewelry business, the Cherry Shop, is particularly bright and colorful.Although the correspondence is entirely one-sided, Ray was scrupulous about answering Martha Rose's letters, and his responses therefore create a shadow of her correspondence with him. References to the completion of I-90 (allowing for significantly more rapid travel between Akron and Chicago) and other aspects of events happening in and around Ohio provide a small window into mid-century American life, as well as into, more generally, the life of a seemingly happily-married upper-ranking military couple.A nice primary source, particularly notable for the exhaustive, near-daily record provided. Short split to front joint; chipping and crumbling to edges of tan construction-paper leaves. First 11 leaves and a few internal leaves torn at binding holes and laid in; handful of letters at rear no longer affixed to the leaves, and laid in. Letters themselves in overall excellent, clean and bright condition, showing only minimal wear and expected fold lines. Large brown faux leather scrapbook album with decorative front board, stab-bound with brown cord [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Howl and other poems

San Francisco: The Pocket Poets Series: Number Four: The City Lights Pocket Bookshop,, 1956. Duodecimo. Original black and white wrappers, stapled as issued. Wrappers toned to edges with some light marks, small strip torn from head of rear cover, occasional spotting to contents. An excellent copy. First published edition, first printing, one of about 1,500 copies printed. This landmark collection defined the discontented voice of its epoch for a generation. It is Ginsberg's first regularly published book, preceded only by the privately produced mimeographed printing of the title poem, and the rather obscure Siesta in Xbalba.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 UK 8th Impression in Dustjacket

Allen & Unwin, London 1956 - 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956. The book is in Very Good Plus condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and 1956 date to 2nd blank page, no other names or writing noted. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 7th impression dustjacket. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of foxing to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, with the spine considerably darkened. The verso of the dustjacket also shows the darkening, but does not seem to have transferred to the book itself. Some edgewear and chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and almost none to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some loss, mainly to the top folds, but none to the bottom. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are soiled, with the darkening of the all areas of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but still evident. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.         Typescript Partial Manuscript]: Arthur [published as "The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights"]

      - Carbon typescript, incomplete; pp. 102-260; double-spaced; two holes punched on margins; creasing to corners and general toning to first several pages; final page (containing only two lines) torn, affecting text else near fine.Steinbeck began writing *The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights* in 1956, adapting the story from the Winchester text of Sir Thomas Malory's *Le Morte d'Arthur*. The manuscript was unfinished at the time of his death, ending with the death of chivalry in Lancelot, and a version edited by Chase Horton was not published until 1976. The manuscript reflects modest grammatical typed corrections. According to Laura F. Hodges in the *Steinbeck Quarterly*, "Steinbeck took a "living approach" to the retelling of Malory's work by using the original structure and chapter titles, but he explored the psychological underpinning of the events and and tuned the use of language [to be] accessible to a Modern English speaker." Drafts of the Arthur manuscript are recorded at the Center for Steinbeck Studies in San Jose (typescript, described as "first draft"), the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas (carbon typescript, 546 pages), and the Morgan Library (typescript, incomplete).A unique, unfinished work from the Noble Laureate and great American novelist.

Die effektvolle Wirkung des Büchleins wird durch wenig Text, Farbendruck und sich überschneidende Ausstanzungen erreicht. -- Bruno Munari (* 24. Oktober 1907 in Mailand, Italien; † 30. - First edition, with Italian text. This famous children\'s book was born out of Munari\'s concept of the \"illegible book.\" Its illustrations in bold, solid colors are emphasized, and are accompanied by minimal text in Italian. The tale is not only told with captivating images, but also through the shapes and materials of the pages themselves. Using overlapping cutouts and transparent cellophane overlays, the reader follows a cat on its nocturnal adventures, investigates the insect life within a lawn, and finds a treasure chest within a cave, which opens. On the rear pastedown are two folded squares in bold blue and yellow that contain the colophon and a humorous biography of the author. One of the founders of the Concrete Art movement and part of the second wave of Futurist artists, Munari originally began creating children\'s books for his son, Alberto, in the 1940s.       Göllner, Turcica 1956; USTC 568735; WorldCat (4 copies, including 1 incomplete). Extremely rare first Czech edition of a famous Turkish chronicle, translated after the German by Jan Kocin. The text was based on a 16th-century Turkish manuscript by Muhammed ibn Hasanjan, called Saadeddin, which described the Turkish history up to the year 1550. This manuscript was brought from Istanbul by the Austrian scholar Hieronymus Beck in 1551, and subsequently translated into German by Joannes Gautier, or Spiegel, the interpreter of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. Gautier augmented the manuscript with a continuation of the history to the year 1588, and this version was rendered into Latin by Joannes Leunclavius, or Hans Lewenklau. Library stamps on title-pages; occasionally browning throughout; with a few old owner's entries; new endpapers; first blank strengthened; a few old owner's entries. Good copy of an extremely rare Prague imprint.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, Chartwell Edition

London: The Educational Book Company, Ltd., 1956. Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. This is a virtually pristine, collector-grade set of the first illustrated edition, bearing the original glassine wrappers. This first illustrated edition was published contemporaneously with the first edition and is known as "The Chartwell Edition." It is a lovely edition of ChurchillÂ’s sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. This edition is not only illustrated, but is also attractively bound in blue leatherette with red leather spine labels blocked in gilt, gilt ruled spine compartments, gilt volume title and vertical rule on each front cover, head and foot bands, and blue topstain. Each volume is profusely illustrated. This set is quite scarce thus, beautifully preserved beneath the original plain glassine wrappers. The bindings are virtually perfect, immaculately clean and bright, square, and tight with sharp corners, perfect spine labels, and no wear. The contents are likewise, clearly unread - crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks and vivid, unfaded topstain. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The blue-stained top edges are clean and retain dark, wholly unfaded color. The fore and bottom page edges remain bright and clean. The only trivial blemish noted is a small indentation to the bottom edge of the Volume I text block. The original glassine wrappers show some wrinkling, tears, and a little loss, including some short,. horizontal tears to the spines, but are substantially complete and have done their job of protecting the magnificent set beneath. Please note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A267.2, Woods/ICS A138(d). Langworth p.317.

[Original illustrated manuscript] "Giselle: A Romantic Ballet In Two Acts. Presented by Les Ballet St Trinian's.

[1956?]. Original folio manuscript (281 × 190 mm). Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Outer wrapper and 8 folding leaves, containing an ink drawing on the front wrapper and 8 full-page ink drawings, most heightened with light wash, each full-page drawing captioned below but without other text. Wrapper split at the fold from foot to near head, wrapper toned and with some spotting, the condition otherwise very good. A fine comic manuscript, with eight large original drawings, showing Searle's immortal naughty schoolgirls in a variety of scenes from a nightmarish production of the romantic ballet. The manuscript is unpublished and undated, but it was probably inspired by the Bolshoi's legendary 1956 visit to Covent Garden; Searle undoubtedly saw the ballet then, as he illustrated the great Russian ballerina Ulanova in the part of Giselle for Punch magazine, 10 October 1956. The second drawing in the manuscript includes a figure that strongly resembles her. Searle's five St Trinian's books were published from 1948 to 1953, although the fictional school was kept alive in the popular imagination by the comedy films that followed, beginning with The Belles of St Trinian's (1954).

. THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS - WORKING DRAFT SCREENPLAY - MULTI-SIGNED - SPECIALLY PREPARED & FINELY BOUND in GILT EMBOSSED BLACK LEATHER COVERS. This specially bound script contains a photocopy of Ernest Lehman's original working draft screenplay which he HAND SIGNED TWICE, once at the beginning and once at the end. The first page is dated 11/6/56, but the script contains many revised pages whose dates range from November 1956 through February 1957. Printed on 8.5x11" paper, printed on one side only. Approximately 150 pages. Though the last page of the screenplay is numbered page 80, there are quite a number of multi-page sections with the same page number, e.g. 13 pages numbered 44 (44A to 44M), and 22 pages numbered 21 (21A to 22V), etc. Provenance: This SPECIAL COPY was reportedly produced by ERNEST LEHMAN himself for donation to a charity auction benefiting PEN International (a non-profit that supports writers and freedom of expression worldwide). This copy was then acquired at that auction as a special gift for HERB YELLIN, owner of the LORD JOHN PRESS and publisher of the LORD JOHN FILM FESTIVAL books. HERB YELLIN then, as was his wont, had his copy signed by others, in this case: TONY CURTIS, MARTIN MILNER and ELMER BERNSTEIN. The date of this book's production is not stated, though circa 1993, the date it was signed and inscribed to Herb (Yellin) by Tony Curtis (see below). Herb Yellin was well known in Hollywood as an important publisher and collector of signed film related books and memorabilia. He died in 2014. This personally prepared and signed script was custom bound in padded black leather and embossed in gilt by the fine bookbinder RONNIE GOUSMAN of Los Angeles. His gold-colored business label is at the bottom of the front pastedown. FINE CONDITION: Tight, Bright, Clean, Beautiful, with that Full Leather Smell. A LOVELY Copy. This specially bound copy of the Working Script for The Sweet Smell Of Success was HAND-SIGNED by the Following: (1) TONY CURTIS, who Starred in the Film along with Burt Lancaster. Curtis accompanied his signature with a large DRAWING. TONY CURTIS' SIGNATURE and DRAWING are on a FULL PAGE, tipped-in just after the front free-endpaper, dated 11/22/93 and inscribed to "Herb" (Herb Yellin). Tony Curtis, 1925-2010. (2) ELMER BERNSTEIN, who Composed and Conducted the Film's Musical Score. ELMER BERNSTEIN'S signature is on a "CAST AND CREDITS" sheet from the film's original 1957 release. The sheet is tipped in following the page with the Tony Curtis signature and drawing. Elmer Bernstein, 1922-2004, was one of the great composers of film scores. His film scores, in addition to the score for The Sweet Smell Of Success, include scores for The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments, The Great Escape, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ghostbusters, and many more notable films. He is often referred to as "Bernstein West" (Leonard Bernstein, no relation, being "Bernstein East"). (3) MARTIN MILNER, who played Steve Dallas in the Film. Martin Milner's signature is also on the "Cast and Credits" page. (4) ERNEST LEHMAN, who CO-WROTE THE SCREENPLAY with Clifford Odets, and who wrote the original novel on which the film is based. LEHMAN HAND SIGNED THIS copy of his script TWICE, on the script's first numbered page, and on the script's last page. Both signatures are bold and fully tangible on the backsides of the page on which they are signed. This was one of Lehman's first scripts, and one of which he was known to be particularly proud. ERNEST LEHMAN, 1915-2005, was nominated for SIX ACADEMY AWARDS and was the first Screenwriter to win a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY AWARD. His screenplays, in addition to The Sweet Smell Of Success, include SABRINA, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, WEST SIDE STORY, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF. He was one of the greatest screenwriter of the 20th century. You can read LOTS about Ernest Lehman, Elmer Bernstein and Tony Curtis on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. Fine

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle

The Bodley Head 1956 - Published by the Bodley Head, London in 1956. This is a lovely copy of the 7th instalment of the classic children's series by C. S. Lewis. The book is in Fine condition, with the only blemishes to speak of being some minor sunning to the top and bottom of the spine and a barely noticeable lean to the spine. Otherwise this copy is beautifully clean and bright and tightly bound in its original blue boards with silver gilt lettering to the spine. It is accompanied by a dust jacket which is also in Fine condition, with just some very minor wear to the spine ends and corners, and some slight sunning to the jacket edges. It is very rare to see a copy of this book in such lovely condition and would be a fantastic addition to any collection of modern first editions! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
