Notice! Stop. Help Save The Youth of America—Don't Buy Negro Records.

New Orleans: Citizen's Council of Greater New Orleans, Inc., 1956 - Silkscreened enlargement (304 ×209 mm) of this notorious handbill, mounted and varnished on a sheet of Masonite with scratch-built wooden support frame, card backboard; together with a copy of the original handbill (207 × 149 mm), pale greyish flimsy stock. Light surface wear, and a few chips around the edges of of mounted example, the handbill somewhat browned and the imprint trimmed, but both remain very good. Display poster improvised from an anti-integrationist handbill produced by the white supremacist, Klan-connected Citizen's Council of Greater New Orleans. Dated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum to 1956, the year after the cross-over success of Little Richard's Tutti Frutti, which reached 17 in the pop charts and number 2 on the R & B chart, leading to the release of Pat Boone's devitalized cover version. "If you don't want to serve negroes in your place of business, then do not have negro records on your juke box or listen to negro records on the radio. The screaming idiotic words, and savage music of these records are undermining the morals of white America. Call the advertisers of the radio stations that play this type of music and complain to them! Don't let your children buy, or listen to these negro records". The placard, which came from the collection of Bob Sidebottom, owner of the Comic Collector Shop in San Jose, and the founder of California Comics, is accompanied by a slightly trimmed copy of the original handbill on the verso of which is the second page of a typed letter from blues guitarist and musicologist Bill Barth to Israel "Izzy" Young, owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village. In his memoirs, Chronicles, Dylan records how he used to hang out at the Center, where Young would let him sit in the back room listening to records and reading, Young was the promoter of Dylan's first concert at the Carnegie Chapter Hall in 1961. Barth, who was one of the founders of the Memphis Country Blues Society, refers to his own record collecting ("I collect blues records, an a few nice oltimey an hillbilly records") and passes along a mailing address for Bukka White, in whose "rediscovery" Barth had been closely involved with John Fahey. The original handbill is extremely uncommon, with copies recorded at University of California, Davis, and Emory only: the improvised poster almost certainly unique, and a remarkable monitory evocation of the virulent racism endemic in the American South in the mid-20th century.

A superb original drawing of Puglsey by New Yorker cartoonist, Charles Addams

New York, 1956. 4to. "His signature and inscription, ""To Norman Strickland with best wishes Chas Addams New York 1936,"" together with a ink and gray wash drawing of his character 'Pugsley,' on the front free endpaper of The New Yorker 1950-1955 Album (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1955) 4to, not paginated [c. 100 pp.], chiefly illustrations bound in blue cloth boards bearing the magazine's iconic logo of dandy Eustace Tilley, and black cloth titled spine. Soiling and rubbing to boards and spine, spine cracked with front board partly detached, light dampstains to front and rear pastedowns with an ink notation, a few pages loose at top, some light to moderate soiling. A superb rendering of Addams' character, Pugsley, well before the noted illustrator formally named him. When The Addams Family made its debut in the pages of The New Yorker in 1938, none of the characters had names. Addams only provided them when his cartoon was adapted for television in 1960. "

London: Collins, 1956. Gouache on artboard, with the image measuring 9.5 X 12 inches and the board measuring 10.5 X 15 inches; signed by artist Trevor Denning near lower right corner. Brief pencilled notation regarding measurments on the lower margin, with the publisher, author, and translator's names overlaid and mounted to the piece on thick cardstock. The printers' instruction sheet for Collins is handwritten on pink stock, affixed on verso. Original dustjacket artwork for the First British Edition of Calvino's first novel. 'The Path to the Nest of Spiders' is told from a child's perspective; Calvino paints the trauma of war torn Italy using a variety of impressive characters, namely a young boy and his teenage sister, who are depicted on the jacket. In our experience, the British Edition of the book is quite uncommon, with few copies offered on the market - collectable or otherwise. The only original jacket artwork we have seen for one of Calvino's books, and quite dazzling in comparison to its American counterpart.

        Profiles In Courage

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition, later printing. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mary Durkin- with appreciation and very best wishes- John Kennedy." The recipient, worked in the West Wing office of Ted Sorenson, JFK's special counsel and speechwriter. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with very light rubbing. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice association copy. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell, 1956-58., 1956. A superb set of FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes; 8vo. Finely bound in recent dark brown half morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spines with raised bands, brown cloth boards; top edges gilt. Very light and very occasional foxing to a few margins of volume 1. Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published. Woods A138(a). Langworth 315.

A Quantum Theory of the Scattering of X-rays by Light Elements" in Physical Review 21, May 1923, pp. 483-502

      - FIRST EDITION OF LEE AND YANG'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING WORK ANNOUNCING THEIR THEORY OF BROKEN SYMMETRY AS AN EXPLANATION OF MESON DECAY; also present is a proposition regarding how to test this theory. This is the full volume 104 with the wraps - in perfect condition -- bound within. Every issue in the volume has its wraps and the volume as a whole contains many other papers of significance. In the summer of 1956, Lee and Yang worked as guest scientists at Brookhaven; in 1957 they received the Nobel Prize in physics for the work they did while there - work that involved radically questioning one of physics' basic tenets, the supposedly absolute law of parity conservation. When Lee and Yang interpreted their results from that summer, they found that during their use of Brookhaven's Cosmotron particle accelerator, the fundamental and supposedly absolute law of parity conservation had been violated. Lee and Yang's studies concerned two particles, the tau and the theta, which had the same masses, lifetimes and scattering behaviors, but which decayed differently in experiments at the Cosmotron. Because of this, the law of parity conservation required that these otherwise similar particles be considered different from one another. Furthermore, Lee and Yang suggested experiments that would show that the weak interaction of radioactive decay could indeed violate parity conservation. When the experiments were later successfully completed, the puzzle of the two particles was solved -- they could in fact be the same. CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume. Lancaster: American Physical Society. 4to (10.75 x 8 inches; 268 x 200mm). Entire volume, continuously paginated pp. 1-736. Compton's paper: pp. 483-502.         Nybyggarna. Boken om utvandrarna. Tredje delen.

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1956. Originalupplaga. 19x13 cm. 627, (4, 1 blank) s. Förlagets halvklotband med mönstrade pärmpapper, utan skyddsomslag. Främre häftesomslag medbundet. Något snedläst. Fint ex. Dedikation: ''To Kristina with warmest wishes from Vilhelm''.

Complete UK Book Club Editions of Ian Fleming's James Bond Novels Comprising: Live and Let Die, Diamonds Are Forever, From Russia With Love, Dr No, Goldfinger, For Your Eyes Only (short stories inc From A View To A Kill, Quantum of Solace), Thunderball, The Spy Who loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice, The Man with the Golden Gun

London: Foyle [The Book Club] 1956-1966., 1956. 11 volumes; 8vo. Publisher's hardbacks in dustwrappers. Some toning and and occasional spotting to the cheap paperstock, minor wear as expected, but generally a very good set, housed in a custom-made fleece-lined slipcase. The entire run of the popular British book club editions, which began in 1956 with 'Live and Let Die'. In total eleven of the fourteen James Bond titles were issued in this format and this set is complete as published. The books were offered in this cheaper format, usually one year after the Cape first editions- some share the same Jonathan Cape artwork, but after the 'Thunderball' painting was damaged while on loan in America, Cape would no longer lend out their original art; as such the Book Club commissioned their own action packed and striking cover designs.
