Elizabeth Taylor on the set of "Raintree County" (1956)

N.p.: N.p., 1956. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Elizabeth Taylor on location for the shooting of "Raintree County" 1956. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his address at Coolmaine Castle in Kilbrittain, Cork, Ireland), as well as his holograph inscription to Deirdre Hughes, dated November 1989. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 20 x 13.5 inches. Near Fine.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, full set of British first editions, finely bound in three-quarter morocco

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Leather bound. This is a full, four-volume British first edition, first printing set, beautifully rebound. The bindings feature three-quarter red morocco over red cloth boards with generous leather corners, raised and gilt-ruled spine bands, lion rampant device in spine compartments, gilt rule transitions, head and foot bands, gilt top edges, and laid paper endsheets. Churchill's sweeping history and last great work was published between 1956 and 1958. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The British first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall, well-proportioned, red cloth-bound volumes. Churchill seems to have taken an active and detailed interest in the aesthetics of the publication. He told his doctor: "it is not necessary to break the back of the book to keep it open. I made them take away a quarter of an inch from the outer margins of the two pages and then add the half-inch so gained to the inner margin." He was clearly satisfied with the result, remarking with pardonable exuberance "It opens like an angel's wings." (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.1184) This finely bound set further refines the aesthetic, echoing the red of the original bindings, but in red morocco. Condition of this set is fine. The bindings show no appreciable wear, soiling or fading, and shelf appearance is superlative. The contents are crisp and bright for the edition. The spotting endemic to the edition is quite light and appears confined to the fore and bottom edges. We find no previous ownership marks. The top edge gilt is uniformly bright and clean.         Henri-Georges Clouzot, Claude Renoir, and Pablo Picasso on the set of "Le mystère Picasso" [The Mystery of Picasso] (1956)

N.p.: N.p., 1956. Vintage double weight borderless photograph from the 1956 film. A candid, on-the-set photograph of Picasso, director Clouzot, and the film's cinematographer Claude Renoir. On the verso is the stamp of the French production company Filmsonor. One of the most important films about art--and more broadly, about the creative process--ever made. Based on a more primitive 1949 Belgian documentary, "Visit to Picasso," Clouzot conceived the idea of capturing Picasso in the act of creating paintings for the camera. He had the artist paint on glass, then photographed the reverse side of the glass, so that the viewer saw only the painting, but not the painter, as it emerged. By agreement between Picasso and Clouzot, most of the paintings were subsequently destroyed so that they would only exist on film. The film begins with Picasso creating simple marker drawings in black and white, gradually progressing to full scale collages and oil paintings. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 7 inches. Single faint crease to one corner, else Near Fine.

        Prelude to Eden

(Püterschein-Hingham Press), Hingham, MA 1956 - Octavo. (32)pp. Proofreader's copy, inscribed by the printer/designer, Dorothy Abbe. Abbe was a student and close friend of designer William Addison Dwiggins, with whom she lived and worked in Hingham, Massachusetts from 1950 to 1956. She became a lifelong advocate of his work after his death. Abbe printed, bound, and occasionally designed the books of the Püterschein-Hingham Press, which she and Dwiggins ran out of their home. Prelude to Eden was the final book of the Press. The marionette play is illustrated throughout in twenty colors using Abbe's own variation of the "tone line" process, which involved photographing and then silk-screening the marionettes constructed by Dwiggins. This copy was a proofreader's copy sent to the Shimers. John A. Shimer, Abbe's neighbor, was the author of This Sculptured Earth: The Landscape of American, for which Abbe won the AIGA award for design in 1959. Line illustrations were supplied by his mother, Florence H. Shimer, author of the 1950 Püterschein-Hingham Press publication Twelve Poems. Prelude is bound in aluminum sheet covers, attached with Fabriano paper at the spine. This was the first time that metal covers were used as a binding design in the US. Original acetate dust jacket and original box. Paper label to box lid is addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. John Shimer" and features the Püterschein-Hingham Press logo. Notice laid in. Darkening and some paper loss to box, front hinge of text split, otherwise fine.Together with two framed, black & white photographic portraits of John A. Shimer's parents, Hervey and Florence Shimer, taken by Abbe in the 1950s. The elder Shimers were friends with Abbe and Dwiggins and fellow residents of Hingham. In one photograph, Hervey Woodburn Shimer, Professor of Paleontology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, laughs good-naturedly with his pipe in hand. His wife Florence H. Shimer is in profile, gesturing with her cigarette in one hand as she engages in conversation. The portraits are evidence of Abbe's skill as a hobby photographer, as well as her fondness for her subjects. Framed in cream mats and black and gold wooden frames with occasional paint loss. Minor edgewear to Hervey's photograph. A fine set from a talented artist and designer. (see Bromer, Strings Attached, illustration 24). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Supreme Court

Washington, D.C.: Ed Clark 1956 - Enormous color photograph of the Supreme Court at the height of the school desegregation movement. Completed in 1935, the magnificent neoclassical Supreme Court Building features the motto “Equal Justice Under the Law” on the west facade, which serves as the front of the building. This splendid, enormous color photograph was taken by famed LIFE magazine photographer Ed Clark. The standard work on Clark notes: “Black Church Leaders pray on the Supreme Court steps for integration to succeed” (Herrera, Frank, Ed Clark: Decades). “We conclude that, in the field of public education, the doctrine of “separate but equal” has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs and others similarly situated for whom the actions have been brought are, by reason of the segregation complained of, deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment” (Supreme Court of the United States, Brown v. Board of Education, 1954). Provenance: Ed Clark. 16 x 20 in. Color photograph. Minimal wear. Fine condition.

RECOIL - INSCRIBED BY COVER ARTIST ROBERT A. MAGUIRE

New York: Lion Books, 1956. Second Printing. Octavo (18cm); illustrated wrappers; yellow edge-staining; 128pp. Generically inscribed by cover artist Robert A. Maguire on the title page. Light wear to extremities, a few faint stress creases, and two discreet closed punctures to center of rear wrapper, briefly affecting a few of the terminal pages; Very Good+. Together with a handwritten note by Maguire on card stock, which reads: "You will notice my signature is different on my newer covers. I copied the original signature from the old time sport cartoonist Willard Muller (proceeds with an example of Muller's signature). The model's name on the book cover is Madelin Mason, popular in the 1950's. I used her head on a few other covers. Bob Maguire." Attractive copy of Thompson's third paperback novel, this printing issued three years after the first, in a taller format and with different cover art by Maguire. Despite the flaws, a spectacular copy with a particularly revealing note from one of the great illustration artists from the period. Hubin, p.402.

Indian Camp (Original screenplay for an unproduced television episode of "Playwrights '56")

New York: Self published, 1956. Draft script for an unproduced episode of television series, "Playwrights '56 (1955-1956), produced by Fred Coe and based on stories by Ernest Hemingway. Written by two of the show's prominent writers, A.E. Hotchner and Sidney Carroll. A.E. Hotchner and Ernest Hemingway were friends and informal business partners, Hotchner often acting as a literary agent. The two corresponded with each other extensively throughout the 1950s, and their correspondence was collected in the 2005 book, "Dear Papa, Dear Hotch: The Correspondence of Ernest Hemingway and A.E. Hotchner, " edited by Albert J. DeFazio III, with a preface by Hotchner. Scripts for "The Battler" (season 1, episode 2) and "The Capital of the World" (unproduced) have also been seen, both based on Hemingway stories. Yul Brynner directed an adaptation of "The Capital of the World," as part of the "Omnibus" TV series in 1953. Carroll continued to write screenplays for films into the 1960s, including "The Hustler" (1961) and "Gambit" (1966), while Hotchner's only film credits include the screenplay for "Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man" (1962), and the source memoir for "King of the Hill" (1993), as well as several TV movies. "Playwrights '56" aired on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1955 and ran for about one year. The show featured primarily small-scale dramas, often set in small towns or working-class city neighborhoods. Writers included Gore Vidal, Sumner Locke Elliott, and J.P. Miller. Notable performers included Frank Overton, Joan Blondell, Paul Douglas, Lillian Gish, Tom Evell, Edmond O'Brien, Conrad Nagel, Sylvia Sidney, Ethel Waters, Ralph Bellamy, and more. Most, if not all, of the episodes have been lost to audiences, with several kinescopes and videotapes of 14 episodes housed in the archives at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research in Madison, Wisconsin. "The Battler" also appears to be the only episode with holdings in worldwide libraries, in visual formats only. Only the second copy of this adaptation we have handled, presumed to be the only adaptation of this Hemingway story. Gray wrappers with paper title label. Title page preset, undated, noted as "A three-part scenario," with credits for Hemingway and screenwriters Hotchner and Carroll. 26 leaves, typed, with the last leaf of text numbered 23. Near Fine overall, bound internally with three silver brads. Complete collation details available upon request.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell, 1956-58., 1956. A superb set of FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes. 8vo. Finely bound in recent green half morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spines with raised bands, blue cloth boards; top edges gilt. Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published.         Archive - British Architect for Foreign Aid Projects in Africa & Southeast Asia - Includes Detailed Design Plans & Specifications, Drawings, Photographs and Travel Journal

Nigeria, 1956. Nigeria, Algeria, Botswana, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, 1956-1992. Archive of senior architect K. T. Dean, featuring numerous documents, photographs and drawings for the planning and design of major projects, mainly of educational facilities for underprivileged communities in Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as one manuscript travel journal recollecting highlights of time spent abroad. The lot in very good condition. Kenneth Troughton Dean, born in England in 1926, worked on an international level with the Nigerian Government, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and other powerful organizations, and specialized in Educational Planning and Design programs. A voluminous archive documenting long term construction projects for the betterment of educational welfare in underdeveloped countries, from inception to completion, by a British architect of high repute. Mr. Kenneth Troughton Dean concentrated his efforts, for the majority of his career, in Africa and in Southeast Asia. This material, preserved by him, commemorates and reveals details of important works in Nigeria, as well as Algeria, and Botswana, as well as Jakarta in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The archive includes the following: "Tale Ends" - A Manuscript Travellogue with Photographs. 8vo. 61 pages in manuscript plus illustration in various formats including manuscript diagrams and original photographs. Entertaining and informative, with approximately 25 pages of text and several photographs devoted to travels to Nigeria, Mr. Dean recollects over three decades of travel to underdeveloped countries, having made 5 separate visits to Nigeria between the years 1956 and 1982. Fascinating advertisements, clipped articles, calling cards, and such miscellanea are also tipped in. The narrative begins by describing a journey made in 1980 for business purposes to Yanbu in Saudi Arabia, followed by a journey to El Asnam in Algeria, September 1981 with the Nottingham division of CLASP (Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme). In June 1982 in Tunisia he met with notable architects. Two visits to Sri Lanka follow. From earlier travels, an excellent photo of Mokolo, Northern Cameroon, was taken in September 1973, followed by photographs and accounts of travels in Nigeria. Here he mentions Nigeria's NUCCON (National Universities Commission Consultants) and a civil engineering project in which he had an influential leadership role. The work was supported by the Nigerian Federal government which announced that several new universities would simultaneously be planned and constructed across the country. Neatly dividing his work by travel interest, a chapter is headed "How we lived" beginning in Indonesia and then Nigeria, revealing here that he was in Wudil as early as 1957 and was hosted by the resident architect. He digresses with an entertaining yet unsettling experience from Kaduna in 1977. The next chapter describes hotel accommodations, from most unique pesspective of an architect, of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and of course Nigeria (Ibadan, Onitsha, etc.) "I visited Onitsha several times while working on a World Bank schools project... introducing me to the joys of chewing cola nut...). Similarly he describes rest houses in Accra, Ghana, and in Eket, Eastern Nigeria, and then restaurants and clubs of the same regions. 34 manuscript drawings made on the spot whilst travelling through Northern Nigeria by Mr. Dean from 1975-1981 (plus 2 made in Jakarta), each captioned and dated, most initialled. A skilled sketch artist, Dean hand draws some of the places visited in the state of Kaduna including hut villages, praying grounds, irrigation, a cemetery, and a dam. In Ife he sketches the site of a future university. Drawings are also made of an old road to Zaria, a residential compound, a primary school between Zaria and Kaduna, St. Bartholomew's church in Wusasa, Zaria - the oldest church in Northern Nigeria which was established in 1922, and the road to Yakasai. He includes scenes near Gubi, at Mokolo, at Rhumsiki and the Calabar airport. Pencil and ink drawings, some coloured, varying in size from 21 x 15 cm to 29 x 19 cm, each protected in a clear plastic sleeve, the lot contained in a blue folder with manuscript label "Northern Nigeria Sketches." Volume of pertinent technical notes on construction projects mainly in Nigeria outlines construction standards, logistics, site assessment, and much more. These include African education projects undertaken in Nigeria and elsewhere with the International Development Association, the World Bank, CLASP, and NUCCON, including the University of Technology in Owerri which was established in 1980. 8vo. Coil binding over cardstock letterhead covers of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners architect firm (RMJM) with whom he frequently partnered with. Excellent visual and data-rich portfolio of works undertaken with British architect firm RMJM (Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners) including documents, diagrams, letters, reports, development proposal plans and profuse with photographs. Pertaining to Nigeria, this volume features residential accommodations for Nigerian universities, and a technological university project in Ruduyausa, Gamjuwa, Bauchi, and the Bauchi State University. Among Southeast Asia projects, we find schematics and photographs of an ESL school in Bangkok. 8vo. Large green binder brimming with images and information, each item contained in a clear plastic sleeve for protection. Three file folders, titled "Draft Texts, Africa etc;" "Overseas Material;" and "Reflections - Another Work," respectively. Containing more documents and photographs, we further find newspaper clippings and other published articles, as well as Dean's personal notes, contemplations, and autobiographical summary. Subject matter herein includes, in part, work with British architect Robin Atkinson in Lagos, schools in Bahrain, World Bank involvement in Nigeria, and corruption. A large manuscript map measuring approximately 75 x 60 cm is titled "Peoples of Nigeria." Folio folders labelled in manuscript. CLASP (Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme) is an unincorporated association made up of local authorities. It was established in 1957 at the instigation of the then Ministry of Education for the purpose of improving the construction and delivery of schools. The consortium addressed issues of skill and material short age together with a high demand. It turned to a systematic form of construction, one which relied on a high proportion of prefabricated elements and had the ability to be built on sites with poor ground conditions including mining subsidence. . Very Good.
