A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956?-8. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. All volumes illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. Tips a little bumped and rubbed. An excellent, bright set in the jackets with lightly sunned spines, and a few nicks to extremities. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations ?- the British Empire and the United States ?- was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell, 1956-58., 1956. A superb set of FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes. 8vo. Finely bound in recent green half morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spines with raised bands, blue cloth boards; top edges gilt. Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published.         Typed Letter Signed

1956. Signed. MILLER, Arthur.Typed Letter Signed. No place: February 17, 1956.Fine typed letter signed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author of Death of a Salesman and The Crucible, to Brooks Atkinson at the New York Times regarding his views on Communism and a public mix-up with the anti-Soviet American Cultural Freedom Committee, written at the height of the Cold War and rampant McCarthyism. Four months later, on June 21, 1956, Miller would defy the House Committee on Un-American Activities by refusing to name suspected communists, earning himself a conviction for contempt of court that would later be reversed by the Supreme Court. Handsomely framed. Here Miller writes on his personal imprinted stationery to Brooks Atkinson, at the New York Times: "I was very glad to get your letter about the Dostoyevsky business. I believe it was the day after you wrote that the American Cultural Freedom Committee protested it had not invited me to make any statement and I would like you to know, since Schumach's story did not make it clear, what the situation was. I received two invitations from, it turns out, The American Committee for Liberation from Bolshevism, the second of which contained the names of James T. Farrell, Lionel Trilling and a dozen or so others who are the leading spirits of the Cultural Committee, and in the confusion of my private life at the moment, I made the assumption that I was being invited by two organizations. On issuing the statement, the Cultural Committee called me and unable to produce an invitation from them—although frankly my poor brain still insists that there was one a month or so ago which I have misplaced—I apologized for my error and said I would search for a letter from them. The next I know, they are attacking me and then, irony of ironies, the next day they issue a statement challenging the Russians to publish my remarks on Dostoyevsky! But all of this is, of course, without importance."I ought to tell you as well, now that this has drawn attention to my views, that I have been saying the same thing and have in fact written much the same viewpoint over the past ten years but nobody, evidently, takes the trouble to note what a man says but only what a man lends his name to. I have broadcast my statement in full, only a part of which was published in the 'Times,' and assume that now stinkbombs will be set off in the East. I hope only that a little light will be shed on the subject of literature in all this and that we may all return again to some sane deliberation on the future of the human animal." Not long after writing this letter, on June 21, 1956, Miller defied McCarthy's House Committee on Un-American Activities by refusing to name suspected communists, which earned himself a conviction for contempt of court that the Supreme Court would later overturn. His 1953 play The Crucible, ostensibly about the Salem Witch Trials, was a well-known allegory for the McCarthyism that was ruining careers and damaging lives.Fine condition.

Typed Letter Signed, with several holograph corrections, 4 separate 4to on his personal stationery, New York, Dec. 10, 1956

Using dialogue, he describes a conversation with producer Sam Goldwyn in this friendly letter to screenwriter, Charlie Brackett Steinbeck discusses "The Wayward Bus," and Goldwyn who wanted to buy the rights to the book and had asked him to write a screenplay. Steinbeck notes a comment made by Jayne Mansfield about not wanting to be in "The Wayward Bus." He quotes her words, "It don't further my career." Part of the conversation he relates to Brackett of his "first experience with the Wayward Bus as a motion picture" is as follows: "Mr. Goldwyn: 'I want to buy this property, if you write it.' Me: 'Mr. Goldwyn, I don't think of it as a motion picture. I am not a motion picture writer....' Mr. Goldwyn: '...I got another property , paid a fortune for it...' Me: '...who wrote the property?' Mr. Goldwyn: 'Edna Ferber.'" Steinbeck asks Brackett to "forgive" his "name-dropping" but drops another name, that of director and former president of Twentieth Century Fox Films, Spyros Skouras, in relation to Steinbeck's novel, "The Moon is Down." Steinbeck recalls that Skouras asked him to come to his office, "and as I came in, he was so excited that his dialect had become almost unintelligible...." Steinbeck offers another dialogue between Skouras and himself in the Greek accent he heard. Steinbeck calls these stories "little vignettes of the workings of great minds." He then tells the history behind the title of the book, originating as a story set in Mexico with a Spanish title not exactly able to be translated into English. The word "Wayward" came closest to the original Spanish. Steinbeck continues regarding his novel. "'The Wayward Bus,' which received rather rough critical treatment when it came out, seems to be sticking around...and by now, I don't remember what I wrote...." He returns to the production of the film referring to actor Max Wagner whom he considers a "charm...like those scorpions pressed in glass that they sell in Mexico as magic against the bite of scorpions...." In giving his book to Brackett for producing the screenplay for the film, Steinbeck ends by saying, "I have a great feeling of security in knowing that my foster-brainchild is in your hands." It is signed, "John." Our letter is listed in the index of "Steinbeck: A Life in Letters," edited by Elaine Steinbeck and Robert Wallsten, page 878, #284, (December 10, 1956 to Charles Brackett) with the provenance of "Steinbeck File, " however, the letter itself is not included in the book. Steinbeck's "The Wayward Bus" was published in 1947 and the film released in 1957 starring Jayne Mansfield, Joan Collins, Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. The film received disappointing reviews and apparently Steinbeck was displeased with the film as well. Charles Brackett, (1892-1969) was a screenwriter who worked closely with director Billy Wilder on many films before moving on to 20th Century Fox.

Architectural plans for Beth Sholom Synagogue

1956. WRIGHT, Frank Lloyd.Six large original architectural plans for Beth Sholom Synagogue.Elkins Park, 1956.Six original plans by Frank Lloyd Wright for the electrical, plumbing, lighting and air conditioning systems for his famous synagogue. Showing the full building sketch and footprints.?"Wright had an impact on American culture and global architecture of a magnitude that posterity has only begun to grasp?" (ANB). Wright?'s last project before his death was the Beth Sholom Synagogue— the only synagogue he ever designed. He accepted the commission in September 1953 and by the following March submitted a design to the Board of Directors of the Congregation. The new Synagogue was to be a glass-roofed temple, intended to evoke Mount Sinai, towering above the suburban houses of Elkins Park ?"like a prehistoric ziggurat. Wright managed to make the building look both ancient and futuristic. Either way, it clearly does not belong to our time… He was certainly out of the mainstream, but his idiosyncrasy makes him look more forward-thinking than some of the most orthodox modern minimalists— whose buildings he used to call ?'flat-chested?" (Beth Sholom). Described by rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen as a ?"promised hosanna,?" there is nothing secular about Beth Sholom: ?"We are in the presence of a Presence?" (Brendan Gill).Near-fine condition, with a few minor creases and closed tears.

        Le gout de notre temps

Genf Albert Skira 1956. O.-Leinen mit OU im O.-Schuber. Vorsatz mit Zeichnung lavierte Tusche (lavis d'encre sur papier, 24 x 17 cm) von Marc Chagall. Handsigniert und datiert von Marc Chagall (signed and with an original drawing by Marc Chagall): "Pour Karl Georg Hemmerich. Marc Chagall 1956 Geneve." Hoffmann. Seeburg 2008. In diesem Band ist die Zeichnung Chagalls auf Seite 62 abgebildet. Wolfram Lambrecht verwaltet den Nachlass von Karl Georg Hemmerich. - Beilage: Lionello Venturi: Chagall.         The Hunters.

Harper Brothers, New York 1956 - First edition of the author's first novel and landmark in the literature of war. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by James Salter on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some fading to the spine. Salter's 1956 fighter pilot novel stands out as a literary endeavor in a genre dominated by cheap adventure yarns. Salter goes beyond the usual gung-ho fighter jock glitz to present the story of Capt. Cleve Connell, whose intentions of becoming an ace are thwarted by enemy pilots with plans of their own. "Anyone under forty may not appreciate how profoundly Salter influenced my generation. [He] created the finest work ever to appear in print--ever--about men who fly and fight" (Robert F. Dorr).         Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics Edited by G.E.M. Anscombe

Oxford; Basil Blackwell. 1956, 1956. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Pp.204. Publisher's hardback cloth binding in printed dustjacket. A crisp, clean copy. Jacket has a couple of small chips to head of spine. A fine copy; unusually for a reference book /study work, this example is unread. Wittgenstein was an Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language, who inspired two of the twentieth century's principal philosophical movements; the Vienna Circle and Oxford ordinary language philosophy, and was a great influence to Betrand Russell and Immanuel Kant. Just one book, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, was published in his lifetime, and Wittgenstein left a number of excercise books, papers, notes and lectures unpublished at the time of his death. This is the second of several posthumous works to appear.

        Komplotterna. Affärerna Unman och Selling.

      - Stockholm; Bonniers, 1956. Originalupplaga. 19,5x13 cm. 59, (1) s. Häftad med tryckt omslag. Riss vid ryggfoten. Främre omslaget med lätt nötta kanter. Bakre omslag med två riss i yttermarginalen. Bra inlaga. Dedikation: "To Kristina with warmest wishes from the Author / 9/6 1956." This copy was inscribed in English. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]
