Correspondence relating to hiring Roger Shugg for a senior editorial position at Alfred A. Knopf in 1945 and Shugg's resignation in 1952

New York, etc. 1956 - 3 typed letters, signed ("Alfred A Knopf"), on Knopf letterhead; 2 autograph letters, signed ("Alfred" & "A Knopf"), on Knopf and Mayflower Hotel stationery; with 3 typed letters, signed, from Knopf staff; carbon copies of 2 typed letters from Shugg, each 1-1/2 pp.; and related ephemera, photographs, and correspondence. 4to and smaller. In early 1945, Alfred A. Knopf wrote to Prof. Roger Shugg (Princeton class of 1927) at the University of Indiana in Bloomington to offer an editorial job with responsibility for college-level history, politics and social sciences textbooks. Shugg, who had worked for Knopf during the middle 1930s, was a fellow at the London School of Economics in 1938-9. From 1941 to 1945, he served as an associate professor of history at Indiana Univ., while doing research for the Military Intelligence Service of the War Dept.'s general staff. During the course of the next month Knopf hired Shugg, effective April 1945, initially with a two-year contract. In late 1952, after a reorganization, Shugg wrote a detailed letter of resignation (present in the carbon), to which Knopf responded with two personal notes. As evidenced by letters to Shugg at the time, there was evidently some acrimony. Shugg went on to the University of Chicago Press, where he served as publishing director from 1961 to 1967. From 1963 to 1965 he was president of the Association of American University Presses, and from 1968 to 1980, he was the director of the University of New Mexico Press. With: White House invitation to a luncheon 17 June 1963 for editors of projects published under the auspices of the National Historical Publication Commission. 3 typed letters, signed ("Alfred A Knopf"), on Knopf letterhead; 2 autograph letters, signed ("Alfred" & "A Knopf"), on Knopf and Mayflower Hotel stationery; with 3 typed letters, signed, from Knopf staff; carbon copies of 2 typed letters from Shugg, each 1-1/2 pp.; and related ephemera, photographs, and correspondence. 4to and smaller [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Floggits [sic]: Series One, Episode 3

London: N.p. [BBC], 1956. 34 mimeographed pp., 5 typed inserts, all secured with split pin to top left. A little edgeworn and dusty, but a well preserved copy. First edition. TERRY NATION'S EXTENSIVELY REVISED WORKING COPY, WITH HIS SIGNATURE, AND WITH A SIGNED HANDWRITTEN NOTE TO PRODUCER ALASTAIR SCOTT JOHNSON TO TITLE PAGE. NO RECORDING OF THIS EPISODE EXISTS. Floggit's, starring Elsie and Doris Waters, ran for three series on BBC Radio between 1956 and 1959. Transplanting their Workers' Playtime characters to a family-run general store, this unexceptional and now very dated show featured a phenomenal supporting cast: Anthony Newley, Joan Sims (whose name is misspelt 'SIMMS' on the title page of this script), Hugh Paddick -- and Ronnie Barker, whose first radio appearance this was. It's writing team was equally stellar. At the same time (1956) as providing scripts for this middle-of-the-road radio comedy, Freeman, Junkin and Nation were also working on Idiot's Weekly Price 2d, the first attempt to present Goon Show humour to a television audience. The script offered here is for Series One, Episode Three of Floggit's, first transmitted on 31 August 1956. No recording is known to exist of this episode, but if the writers' extensive rewrites are any guide, the show was still very much in the process of bedding down. The script as first presented clearly found no favour with its stars: extensive deletions and rewrites cover almost every page, and newly typed pages (themselves heavily revised) have been inserted at intervals. The whole was then re-submitted to the producer, Alastair Scott Johnson, with a handwritten note on the title page from Nation: 'Dear Alastair, The amendments and cuts which we hope you can read and with which Elsie and Doris seem happy. Sincerely, Terry'. Only the third episode, now lost, of a show which gave a radio debut to Ronnie Barker, which featured very early appearances by Joan Sims and Anthony Newley, and which is co-written, signed twice, and extensively revised by the man who, seven years later, would go on to invent the Daleks.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956?8. 4 volumes, octavo (236 x 150 mm). Contemporary fine binding by Maltby's of Oxford in red half morocco, twin blue-green morocco labels, raised bands with dotted rule gilt, compartments panelled in gilt, red cloth sides, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. A handsomely bound set in excellent condition. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations ? the British Empire and the United States ? was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

The Goon Show: Series Seven, Episode Four: The Macreekie Rising Of '74

London: N.p. [BBC], 1956. 23 mimeographed pp., secured with split pin to top left. Revisions, annotations and doodles throughout, some dampstaining to upper half. First edition. CO-WRITER LARRY STEPHENS' COPY, WITH HIS OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE TO FRONT PAGE AND WITH HIS REVISIONS AND ELABORATE DOODLES THROUGHOUT. 'Larry was an ex-commando captain, who had seen some tough service in the Far East. He had a natural flair for comedy scriptwriting and shared with the Goons their irreverence and sense of the ridiculous, and also their artistic and musical leanings. He was both an able pianist and a meticulous illustrator of the definitive Goon character, with which he was wont to adorn the pages of his script.' (Jimmy Grafton, The Goon Show Companion). Larry Stephens is one of the more elusive figures in British comedy history. He and Spike Milligan were kindred spirits. Both were jazz fanatics (Stephens was a skilled pianist); both had faced the terror of war (Stephens as a Commando Captain); both battled personal demons. Stephens began his comedy career writing material for his close friend, the yet-to-be-famous Tony Hancock, but by 1951 had found his spiritual home at The Goon Show. He was a rock for the famously unstable Spike Milligan, able most weeks to distil the essence of Spike's madness into a workable Goon Show script. Stephens' ability to speak fluent Milligan made their writing partnership the most reliably productive on the show, and is also the main reason why the short film The Case of the Mukkinese Battlehorn comes closest of all visual adaptations to capturing the almost abstract imaginary universe of the Goons. But Stephens was an alcoholic, and his excessive drinking led to battles with the BBC as early as Series 2 -- and also to his tragically early death from a cerebral haemorrhage in January 1959, at the age of thirty-five. Stephens' absent-minded habit of doodling Goonish caricatures on his scripts is well documented (see above), but examples rarely appear on the open market. The script offered here carries some excellent examples, notably the full-page rendering of 'Xerxes Print, Horse-Plucker-In-Ordinary'. The dampstaining (which has not affected the doodles) seems to have taken place a long time ago: Stephens' name on the front page is blanched slightly, but is perfectly legible. A recording of this show is held in the BBC Sound Archives. Spike Milligan was unwell at the time of recording, and does not appear; his place was taken by George Chisholm. An extremely rare and highly desirable piece of British comedy history.

        Walt Disney's African Lion

Simon and Schuster, New York 1956 - First English language edition. Tiny ding on rear board, boards lightly rubbed, spine lightly foxed, ink names on front endpapers. 74, [1] pp. Tipped in glossy photographic illustrations reproduced from scenes in the 1955 Disney / True-Life Adventure film of the same name. Photography by Alfred & Emma Milotte, who spent three years on location to complete this project. The film won the Silver Bear Award at the 6th Berlin International Film Festival. The book was designed by Armand A. Bigle and produced by Marc Barraud from the original French language edition 'Walt Disney Lions d'AFrique.' Printed in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland. This work is important for a number of reasons: as an artifact of early American efforts in documentary nature films; as a piece of Walt Disney memorabilia; as evidence of early conservation efforts; and as a notable example of book design, and of tipped-in photographs in particular. While we found between two and three dozen copies in institutional holdings, this title appears to be rather scarce in the trade. Keywords: FILM MOTION PICTURE MOVIE CINEMA WALT DISNEY AFRICAN LION [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

President Eisenhower's hand corrected campaign speech given one month before his second election. Typed Manuscript with copious hand written annotations, unsigned, 15 pp., Folio, Washington , DC, ca October 9, 1956

This is his second draft (so titled) for the president's 1956 presidential campaign speech delivered in Pittsburgh at the Hunt's Armory, Oct. 10, 1956. and on national television. The 1956 campaign was the first in which televised campaign ads were influential, allowing the candidates to avoid some of the rigors of in-person campaigning. We include a photographed copy of the speech "as actually delivered" released to the press. Our typed manuscript bears dozens of pencil changes incorporating hundreds of words, including whole sections that Eisenhower rewrote and in several instances crossed out and edited again. He used the margins as he ran out of room on the typed pages. Thus, the president's abundant editing offers great insight into his thoughts while on the last leg of his second presidential campaign. A few selections from Eisenhower's hand corrected draft of his nationally televised campaign speech in Pittsburgh one month before his election to his second term: Eisenhower edits the opening line following "My fellow citizens" as follows: "We are now passing through one of those political episodes..." Typed text continues: "when democracy, in this Republic, tests and proves itself...." In the finished speech, Eisenhower talks about honesty in political campaigns on the issues of government support of big vs. small businesses, faltering education, social security and unemployment, federal support of health programs. On foreign policy he mentions the end of the Korean War, aid to other nations, "Weakness invites aggression. Strength stops it...." He advocates for weapons testing as a war deterrent. Annotations in pencil throughout the fifteen page speech. Staple holes and a paperclip impression in upper left corner. Light wear and in very good condition. Additional quotes: "What then is the real issue? It is this: what principles -- what policies and programs -- can best help our people to gain and to guard these blessings? How shall we debate this issue? I do it with this conviction: what matters in a democracy is not how loudly our leaders speak -- but how responsibly -- now how big their promises are --- but how honest. "They say that your government of today cares only for 'big business' -- nothing for 'small business' Now what are the facts?...the testing fact -- is that the enforcement of anti-trust laws has never been more strict..we...created the Small Business Administration ...." Eisenhower won his second presidential campaign, with Richard Nixon as his running mate, defeating Democratic party candidate Adlai Stevenson for the second time. In the 1956 election, Eisenhower won by an electoral college landslide and also received 57% of the popular vote. Rare in this format and with important and timely content.

Fantastic Ben-Gurion to Dayan! A day after Egypt's Nasser proclaimed a new constitution and assured his people of the strength of his armed forces, Israeli Prime Minister Ben-Gurion writes to General Moshe Dayan "We must be militarily prepared not because of our past glory but because of our view of the future with open eyes without neglecting the future capacity of our enemy … We must constantly remember: Our defense is tied to the ultimate issue - victory or annihilation…"

Jerusalem, Israel, January 17, 1956. 6.25" x 7.75". "Important Typed Letter Signed ""D. Ben-Gurion"" as Israeli Prime Minister, in Hebrew, to Brig. General Moshe Dayan, Chief of the General Staff, Hakiryah, Tel Aviv. Jerusalem, Israel, 1 page, 6.25"" x 7.75"", January 17, 1956. With complete English translation. Two loose-leaf holes in blank right margin. Fine condition. In full, ""In light of the forthcoming, we must be militarily prepared not because of our past glory - but because of our view of the future with open eyes without neglecting the future capacity of our enemy. We are commanded to engage in critical, pointed and brutal self analysis. We must constantly remember: Our defense is tied to the ultimate issue -victory or annihilation. We must not make the fatal error that was made by France - who was prepared for World War II with the plans of World War I, and therefore was crushed in the war.""A day earlier, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser had proclaimed a new constitution for Egypt and, according to the Los Angeles Times, ""the President aroused thunderous applause from the great crowd when he assured his people that new armed forces already were strong enough to defend Egypt 'against Zionist aggression'""The October 29 - November 6, 1956, Suez Crisis (Sinai War), resulted in Israel's capture of the Gaza Strip and the entire Sinai Peninsula. The United States pressured Israel to withdraw from Egyptian territory; Israel withdrew from Sinai in March 1957. The Straits of Tiran, closed by Egypt since 1951 was re-opened; Israeli shipping could again move freely through the Straits of Tiran to and from Africa and Asia. In 40 years of auction records, we locate only 3 other letters from Ben Gurion to Dayan."

[Photo-Archive:] Photographs of an Israeli Soldier and Israeli Defense Forces Operations in the Field, circa 1956-1973

[Israel. circa 1956-1973]. An archive consisting of 60 loose black & white snapshots and related photographs of an Israeli soldier and the military operations of an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) armored brigade in the field, spanning the years from 1959 through the mid-1970s. The collection includes images taken during the 1967 Six Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War, and other IDF military operations. Also included are images of various bands of armed men dating back to 1959, most of whom are informally dressed and armed with rifles (rather than Uzi submachine guns which most Israeli soldiers were armed with). The collection contains an Israeli ID card of a young man issued in 1958, presumably the photographer, who served in an armored brigade, along with a snapshot of a woman in uniform dating from the same period, and 3 or 4 family photographs taken in Eastern Europe, one of which shows a young boy and father at a family grave in Poland. Although we have not be able to clearly identify the photographer, the image of the headstone in Poland records the name of one Josef Sadek who died in 1956.The collection is roughly divided into three lots, the first consisting of 21 prints dating from 1959 -- circa 1960; a second lot of 33 prints dating from the 1960s -- mid-1970s (including 1 color print of IDF soldiers assigned to a bulldozer); and a third lot of 6 personal prints (including the ID card). A few prints are captioned on the back in Hebrew, all in near fine condition. An intriguing collection featuring many compelling images of Israeli tank crews and individual soldiers, documenting in particular the ethnic diversity of the men, and their high morale. .
