Original 1956 Signed Blueprint of Frank Lloyd Wright’s design which is today the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin

n.p., 1956. 28.5" x 5". "Printed Blueprint Signed “F Ll W / 56” in brown ink in a 1” x 1” brown ink square box shaded in red pencil in the lower left, 56.5” x 18”. Two 2.75” vertical lines have been drawn in red pencil at each end of the 28.5” x 5” architectural drawing in the lower half, captioned “Elevation From Lake Monona Scale: 1/32” = 1’-0”” Lightly printed. Minor soiling and mounting traces at perimeter easily matted over. Fine condition. In 1938, Frank Lloyd Wright proposed a design for a civic auditorium which would link Lake Monona, surrounded on three sides by the city of Madison, Wisconsin, with the State Capitol building two blocks away. Wright had a summer home at Spring Green, 35 miles from Madison. It was defeated at a County Board meeting by one vote. In 1954-1955, in the postwar economic boom, Madison voters approved a bond referendum for a civic center and Wright was chosen as project architect. The original signed blueprint here offered was accomplished in 1956. The Lake Monona project was effectively destroyed the next year by a state law reducing the height of a lakefront building to 20 feet; Wright’s building would have been 60 feet high. Madison’s Mayor called the signing of the bill into law by Republican Gov. Vernon Thomson on September 21, 1957, “a regrettable insult to Wisconsin’s most renowned living citizen.” Wright said that objectors to the civic auditorium had misrepresented the facts, saying that his proposal would not have interfered with the view of Lake Monona from the street above. “From the capitol two blocks away,” explained Wright, “there would be no change whatever from the view except a great fountain of gushing water where the unconscious objectors have shown a building.”On this blueprint, viewing the civic auditorium from Lake Monona, the fountain and the Madison State Capitol building can be seen in the distance. After the 1958 elections, in January 1959, Madison-area state legislators introduced a bill which was signed by new Democratic Gov. Gaylord Nelson, repealing the 1957 law. Wright completed his last rendering shortly before his death on April 9, 1959. In 1992, Madison voters narrowly approved the transformation of Wright’s civic center into a convention facility. Construction began in 1994 and in July 1997, the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center opened, 59 years after Frank Lloyd Wright’s inception of the project. “With interiors redesigned by Taliesin architect Tony Puttnam, Monona Terrace spans ninety feet out over shimmering waters, incorporating thoroughly modern technology and amenities with the architect´s signature organic design…” (from"

Six Television Plays (First Edition, inscribed to playwright Neil Simon)

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1956. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author to fellow playwright Neil Simon: "To Doc and Joan / #10 / Bright? He's a common ignorant slob! He dont even speak good English! / #11 / He doesnt even speak good English / as long as he writes good English! / Thanks for buying this one / Best / Reggie / Feb. 15, 1957." Doc and Joan are Neil Simon and his first wife, Joan Baim, a dancer. Simon received the nickname as a kid, when he would pretend to be a doctor and always carry a toy stethoscope. The inscription alludes to an inside joke between the three, as well as a close relationship. Near Fine in a Very Good plus or better dust jacket. Light rubbing at the extremities, and a few white specks at the rear board. Jacket spine slightly toned, with brief chipping at the crown, and light shelfwear. Jacket design by William Bunce. Each of the plays included appeared on "Studio One [in Hollywood]" (1948-1958), a Columbia-produced television series, with the exception of "Crime in the Streets," which appeared on "The Elgin Hour," and which was adapted to film in 1956. One year later, "Twelve Angry Men" was adapted into an Academy Award nominated film (as "12 Angry Men") directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda. A notable association between two prestigious screenwriters.

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold [Signed]

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1956. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/fine. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (some darkening to the spine head, bumping to the corners, some offsetting to the endpapers, and light foxing to the closed page block's edges), in a Very Good + dust jacket (light wear to the spine ends and flap turn corners, light sunning to the spine panel, offsetting the the flaps, vertical fold line to the rear flap), SIGNED BY C. S. LEWIS on the page immediately following the front free endpaper below the brief printed note about the book. This highly-notable C. S. Lewis work sets forth his retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth based upon their story as contained in a chapter of "Metamorphoses", a work written in the 2nd century AD by Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis (also known as Platonicus as he was a student of Platonic philosophy in Athens. [St. Augustine referred to the story as "The Golden Ass" -- the name by which the tale is commonly known -- as the work's protagonist, Lucius, desiring to practice magic, performs as spell intended to turn himself into a bird but which ends up turning him into an ass -- also known as a donkey). [Interestingly, the entire work is the only ancient Roman novel written in Latin to survive in its entirety.] Lewis began to think of retelling the Myth as an undergraduate student. He thought of, and worked on, the retelling over a period of 35 years -- first writing in it in verse form as he initially saw himself a Poet. He ultimately rewrote the story in prose finally producing the novel which was first published in 1956. The novel was well-received by the literary community and both Lewis and his dear friend and fellow-author J. R. R. Tolkien considered the novel to be Lewis' best and most-accomplished work. It was Lewis' favorite of all of his works. The New York Herald Tribune described the novel as "The most significant and triumphant work that Lewis has . . . produced" and of it the New York Times stated: "Till We Have Faces succeeds in presenting with imaginative directness what its author has described elsewhere as ‘the divine, magical, terrifying and ecstatic reality in which we all live’ . . . [It] deepens for adults that sense of wonder and strange truth which delights children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and other legends of Narnia." Having an excellent Provenance, this novel came from the Estate of Martha Graham of dance fame. Signed copies of C. S. Lewis novels are far from common. An excellent copy of C. S. Lewis' favorite of all of his works, SIGNED BY C. S. LEWIS. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

König Hirsch. Oper in 3 (drei) Akten von Heinz von Cramer. Musik von Hans Werner Henze. Von Henze signiertes Exemplar. Klavierauszug von Heinz Moehn. Edition Schott 4915.

Er dirigierte viele Uraufführungen, darunter u.a. Versand D: 5,50 EUR Musik. Klassische Musik. Musikwissenschaft. Musikgeschichte. Noten.         Brief Authority: Excursions of a Common Man in an Uncommon World

New York: Harper & Brothers 1956 - 8vo., tan boards and rust cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, with a touch of edge-wear. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Jessup, In appreciation of his wise guidance of our policies in Southeast Asia during [?] years, Ed Stanton," on the front endpaper. ---- The recipient Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. In 1950 Edwin F. Stanton, the ambassador to Thailand, invited Ambassador Jessup to attend a crucial meeting with the Thai government. Stanton recalled Jessup's contribution in his "Brief Authority." A compelling presentation copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Elizabeth Taylor on the set of "Raintree County" (1956)

N.p.: N.p., 1956. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Elizabeth Taylor on location for the shooting of "Raintree County" 1956. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his address at Coolmaine Castle in Kilbrittain, Cork, Ireland), as well as his holograph inscription to Deirdre Hughes, dated November 1989. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 20 x 13.5 inches. Near Fine.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, full set of British first editions, finely bound in three-quarter morocco

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Leather bound. This is a full, four-volume British first edition, first printing set, beautifully rebound. The bindings feature three-quarter red morocco over red cloth boards with generous leather corners, raised and gilt-ruled spine bands, lion rampant device in spine compartments, gilt rule transitions, head and foot bands, gilt top edges, and laid paper endsheets. Churchill's sweeping history and last great work was published between 1956 and 1958. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The British first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall, well-proportioned, red cloth-bound volumes. Churchill seems to have taken an active and detailed interest in the aesthetics of the publication. He told his doctor: "it is not necessary to break the back of the book to keep it open. I made them take away a quarter of an inch from the outer margins of the two pages and then add the half-inch so gained to the inner margin." He was clearly satisfied with the result, remarking with pardonable exuberance "It opens like an angel's wings." (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.1184) This finely bound set further refines the aesthetic, echoing the red of the original bindings, but in red morocco. Condition of this set is fine. The bindings show no appreciable wear, soiling or fading, and shelf appearance is superlative. The contents are crisp and bright for the edition. The spotting endemic to the edition is quite light and appears confined to the fore and bottom edges. We find no previous ownership marks. The top edge gilt is uniformly bright and clean.         Henri-Georges Clouzot, Claude Renoir, and Pablo Picasso on the set of "Le mystère Picasso" [The Mystery of Picasso] (1956)

N.p.: N.p., 1956. Vintage double weight borderless photograph from the 1956 film. A candid, on-the-set photograph of Picasso, director Clouzot, and the film's cinematographer Claude Renoir. On the verso is the stamp of the French production company Filmsonor. One of the most important films about art--and more broadly, about the creative process--ever made. Based on a more primitive 1949 Belgian documentary, "Visit to Picasso," Clouzot conceived the idea of capturing Picasso in the act of creating paintings for the camera. He had the artist paint on glass, then photographed the reverse side of the glass, so that the viewer saw only the painting, but not the painter, as it emerged. By agreement between Picasso and Clouzot, most of the paintings were subsequently destroyed so that they would only exist on film. The film begins with Picasso creating simple marker drawings in black and white, gradually progressing to full scale collages and oil paintings. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 7 inches. Single faint crease to one corner, else Near Fine.

        The Supreme Court

Washington, D.C.: Ed Clark 1956 - Enormous color photograph of the Supreme Court at the height of the school desegregation movement. Completed in 1935, the magnificent neoclassical Supreme Court Building features the motto “Equal Justice Under the Law” on the west facade, which serves as the front of the building. This splendid, enormous color photograph was taken by famed LIFE magazine photographer Ed Clark. The standard work on Clark notes: “Black Church Leaders pray on the Supreme Court steps for integration to succeed” (Herrera, Frank, Ed Clark: Decades). “We conclude that, in the field of public education, the doctrine of “separate but equal” has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs and others similarly situated for whom the actions have been brought are, by reason of the segregation complained of, deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment” (Supreme Court of the United States, Brown v. Board of Education, 1954). Provenance: Ed Clark. 16 x 20 in. Color photograph. Minimal wear. Fine condition.
