[Photo-Archive:] Photographs of an Israeli Soldier and Israeli Defense Forces Operations in the Field, circa 1956-1973

[Israel. circa 1956-1973]. An archive consisting of 60 loose black & white snapshots and related photographs of an Israeli soldier and the military operations of an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) armored brigade in the field, spanning the years from 1959 through the mid-1970s. The collection includes images taken during the 1967 Six Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War, and other IDF military operations. Also included are images of various bands of armed men dating back to 1959, most of whom are informally dressed and armed with rifles (rather than Uzi submachine guns which most Israeli soldiers were armed with). The collection contains an Israeli ID card of a young man issued in 1958, presumably the photographer, who served in an armored brigade, along with a snapshot of a woman in uniform dating from the same period, and 3 or 4 family photographs taken in Eastern Europe, one of which shows a young boy and father at a family grave in Poland. Although we have not be able to clearly identify the photographer, the image of the headstone in Poland records the name of one Josef Sadek who died in 1956.The collection is roughly divided into three lots, the first consisting of 21 prints dating from 1959 -- circa 1960; a second lot of 33 prints dating from the 1960s -- mid-1970s (including 1 color print of IDF soldiers assigned to a bulldozer); and a third lot of 6 personal prints (including the ID card). A few prints are captioned on the back in Hebrew, all in near fine condition. An intriguing collection featuring many compelling images of Israeli tank crews and individual soldiers, documenting in particular the ethnic diversity of the men, and their high morale. .

Handsigniert und datiert von Marc Chagall ( Book signed, dated and with an original handdrawing by Marc Chagall): ''Pour Karl Georg Hemmerich. Marc Chagall 1956 Geneve.'' Profiles In Courage.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition, later printing. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Anthony Amari best regards John Kennedy." Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

Small Archive Related to Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

(1956, 1968). In 1897, eight year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun, asking, in part, "Papa says, 'If you see it in The Sun it's so.' Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?" The reply of Editor Francis P. Church read, in small part, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias...." Church's response became the most reprinted English language newspaper editorial in history. When Virginia O'Hanlon died, in 1971, friends formed a press to publish the editorial and its back story as a children's book; in 1974, the book became an Emmy Award-winning animated television special; and, in 2009, it became a CGI animated television special entitled simply, "Yes Virginia." The items offered here all predate the story's book and animation fame, and include the typescript of a 1956 television appearance by O'Hanlon, a Sun broadside of the editorial, and Two Christmas Classics, which is likely the editorial's first appearance in book form, in 1968. The lot is as follows: 1. The 3-page typescript of a 1956 segment of the television show The Children's Hour, hosted by Ed Herlihy, with guest appearances in this episode by Santa Claus and by Virginia O'Hanlon, who would have been in her late 60s. In it, Santa asks Herlihy if there really is a Virginia, and Herlihy introduces "Dr. Laura Virginia O'Hanlon Douglas," using her married name (kept after her divorce), acknowledging her doctorate (from her career as an educator), and revealing that "Virginia" was actually her middle name. Herlihy then recounts the story of the editorial, and O'Hanlon is given unscripted time to talk about events since, followed with her own reading of Francis P. Church's famous response to her younger self. These pages are stapled to: 2. An undated New York World Telegram/The Sun broadside of the full editorial, entitled "Is There a Santa Claus?," and adding a paragraph at the bottom on "How Editorial Happened to Be Written." 3. A cover letter is included, written on New York World Telegram letterhead and dated October 21, 1956, from a former employee of the paper to "Miss Clements" (Alice Clements, producer of The Children's Hour), saying that he is acquainted with O'Hanlon and feels he can convince her to appear on the show, adding, "Each and every year during the month of December I was shocked by the nation-wide demand for reprints of the Virginia O'Hanlon story." These three items are folded in half, and the corner staple is rusted; they are otherwise near fine. 4. Together with the chapbook Two Christmas Classics, issued by Columbia University Press, ca. 1968, and printing both Church's editorial and Clement Clarke Moore's A Visit from Saint Nicholas ("Twas the night before Christmas") as a holiday keepsake, as both Church and Moore were graduates of Columbia College. (Coincidentally, O'Hanlon received her Masters Degree from Columbia.) The chapbook also prints brief, anonymous, introductions to each. Approximately 4-3/4" x 6-1/2", edge-sunning to the front cover; near fine in stapled wrappers, with a holiday greeting laid in that is signed by Carl B. Hansen, of Columbia University Press. A relatively early grouping of items in the enduring legacy of one child's curiosity and Church's timeless response embodying the meaning of Christmas. No Binding.

      - Northampton, Mass.: Gehenna Press, 1956. Small 4to, [11 inc. the first blank]pp. 18 b/w plates printed on Japan vellum with a title-sheet printed in red on plain paper preceding each image. Stapled into wrappers, very good. "Fifty copies of this book have been printed by Esther and Leonard Baskin at the Gehenna Press in Northampton Mass." This is copy number "X" which indicates a proof copy since the edition was issued in a quarter morocco binding and this copy is unbound. Six copies are recorded on WorldCat to which add Toronto (Fisher Library) and Essick (CA). Leonard Baskin's note, from the Bibliography: "This was the last book which was made with my hands, that cessation a benefaction since I was a compositor & pressman of no distinction. This book is an homage to Blake & the dear youths who plied him with honour in his late age. My increased skill in woodengraving is here made manifest & a pattern for a kind of Gehenna Press book makes its beginning here; an introduction succeeded by a series of prints. The title-page reveals the novice's poking into historical sources & exemplars." [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Alfred Wertheimer. Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll.

(Text dt., engl., frz.) 31 x 44 cm, 418 Seiten, durchg. teils farb. Abb., geb. in Schlagkassette, signiert, num. (1956 Expl.) [Attributes: Signed Copy]
