The Silver Sword ( With The Correct First Issue Wrapper )

The First UK Printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1956. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. It would be fine except for mild spotting to the text block, paste-downs and end papers. The pages remain clean apart from one or two spots to the page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. It is the correct First Issue. Mild edge-wear with a little loss a the spine ends. Mild toning to the spine and the flap edges. Closed tears to the lower front edge and at the folds. Mild toning and spotting to the rear cover. The C. Walter Hodges wrapper artwork ( reproduced as the colour frontispiece ) looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A very presentable copy and scarce to find as such in this condition. 'One of the most remarkable children's books since 1945' (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature). The Silver Sword, has become a classic, bringing to life the story of four refugee children and their search for their parents in the chaos of Europe immediately after World War II. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

Howl and Other Poems; Introduction by William Carlos Williams

City Lights Books, San Francisco 1956 - 5" x 6.13" pp. 44, One of the foundational troika of Beat Literature along with "On The Road" and "Naked Lunch". This Poem has survived a First Amendment challenge in court paving the way for a new generation of artists. This Second Edition is even more rare than the First as more than two-thirds of the original printing was confiscated and destroyed by the customs agency. As with first edition printing, Dedication to Lucian Carr is missing and book printing is in grey-blue. A light water spot along the half inch closest to the spine on this original printed white band pasted to black cover, which is all that keeps this from being a very fine copy. "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix," (p. 9).         The Lord of the Rings, 1st UK Edition Early Printings with Dustjackets and Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen and Unwin in 1956 & 1957, these books are early impressions of the 1st UK Edition, originally published in 1954/1954/1955 respectively. The Fellowship of the Rings is a 5th impression published in 1956, in its correct 5th impression dustjacket. The Two Towers is a 4th impression published in 1956, in a original 4th impression dustjacket. The Return of the King is a 3rd impression published in 1957, in its correct 3rd impression dustjacket. All three books have their original dustjackets which are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing with minor chips and loss to the edges, mostly the spine fold areas on the Two Towers and The Fellowship of the Ring. The Return of the King slows a bit more soiling to the dustjacket and a slight bit of fading to the red lettering. It also has some damp marks to the front edges of the front and back boards, causing some mottling and fading to the red cloth, does not appear to have effected the textblock at all. Overall these books are in remarkable condition with only the most minor of loss or wear to the edges, mainly at the spine folds, and only very light tanning to the spines. The dustjackets are priced and not clipped and covered in archival protectors. The books are in Very Good Plus condition with a bit of offsetting to the endpapers in the The Fellowship and less so The Two Towers. No previous owners names, no other writing or markings to the books. The gilt to the spines are all clean and bright. Each book has it's own original foldout map tipped in at the rear, and all are in excellent condition with no tears or extra folds noted. A custom bonded red leather slipcase to house and protect this wonderful set of books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956?8. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. An excellent, bright set, with a little foxing to edges of text block, in the bright jackets with slightly sunned spines and a few nicks to extremities. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations ? the British Empire and the United States ? was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

Konkret realism. / Bærtling, Jacobsen, Mortensen. Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm. Mars-april 1956.

Stockholm, Liljevalchs Konsthall, 1956. 4:o. 80 s. Rikt illustrerad i färg och svartvitt, bl. a. med sex inklistrade seriegrafier. Vackert och påkostat klotband i olikfärgade fält, baserat på katalogens karakteristiska omslag (Isbergs, Norrköping). Omslagen medbundna. Nyskick. Med dedikation av Richard Mortensen daterad 1961. Med essayer om Olle Baertling (av Oscar Reutersvärd), Robert Jacobsen (av Rolf Söderberg) och Richard Mortensen (av Karl G. Hultén). "Slagordet Konkret realism skapades förmodligen av Richard Mortensen. [...] [...] A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. . This is a superlative, jacketed, British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958.  The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The work itself was two decades in the making.  The Churchillian conceptions that underpinned it were lifelong. The cultural commonality and vitality of English-speaking peoples animated Churchill throughout his life, from his Victorian youth in an ascendant British Empire to his twilight in the midst of the American century. Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939.  The work was fittingly interrupted by an unprecedented alliance among the English-speaking peoples during the Second World War - an alliance Churchill personally did much to cultivate, cement, and sustain.  The interruption continued as Churchill bent his literary efforts to his six-volume history, The Second World War, and then his remaining political energies to his second and final premiership from 1951-1955. This first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets. Churchill seems to have taken an active and detailed interest in the aesthetics of the publication. He told his doctor: "it is not necessary to break the back of the book to keep it open. I made them take away a quarter of an inch from the outer margins of the two pages and then add the half-inch so gained to the inner margin." He was clearly satisfied with the result, remarking with pardonable exuberance "It opens like an angel's wings." (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.1184) Unfortunately, as beautiful as the first editions are, they proved somewhat fragile. The dust jackets commonly suffer significant fading, wear, soiling, and spotting, and the books typically bear spotting and fading of the red-stained top edges. This set features truly fine dust jackets with near fine plus volumes beneath, and is quite elusive in such condition. The dust jackets are crisp, vividly bright, immaculately clean, and entirely complete, unclipped and with no discernible wear. Spine presentation is magnificent. One has to see a great many first edition sets ? which we have ? to appreciate how bright these dust jackets remain. The dust jackets are preserved beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The volumes beneath are likewise exceptional examples. The red cloth bindings remain perfectly square and tight with unfaded red color, vivid spine gilt, sharp corners, and no reportable wear. The contents are not only beautifully bright with no previous ownership marks, but also entirely free of the spotting endemic to this edition. Even the fore and bottom edges remain pristine. The sole flaw that prevents our grading this set as truly fine is uniform fading to the red topstain across all four volumes.

1956. 2 pages in-4.

Franco London Films 1956 - Original French program for the 1956 film, "Elena et les Hommes," the third of a trilogy of films directed by Jean Renoir (the others being "The Golden Coach" and "French Cancan"), starring Ingrid Bergman at the peak of her career, in which the director envisioned a very lush and stylized version of eighteenth-century France. A rare program from Jean Renoir's brief and fascinating exploration of historical drama. A beautiful and interestingly designed program, with a lovely illustration of "Elena" (Ingrid Bergman) with her "men" hanging from the ties of her bodice. Two-color informational leaves are interspersed with pairs of bound-in, full-color matte stills from the film, with a clear Mylar protector (as issued) on the front panel and a gold comb binding. Laid in are three two-color French foldouts, all specifically advertising the film. 5 leaves, with 8 smaller photo-llustrated leaves interspersed throughout, all bound in. 16 pages. 12 x 9.5 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 241. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
