A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, a full set of four British first editions inscribed and dated by Churchill to his friend and financial advisor in October 1957, with a typed, signed letter from Churchill dated September 1957

London: Cassell and Company. Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This full set of British first editions is inscribed and dated in October 1957 by Churchill to his friend and financial advisor, Arthur Lewis Ball, and accompanied by a September 1957 typed, signed letter from Churchill to Ball. The five-line inscription inked in blue on the Volume III front free endpaper reads: "To | Arthur Lewis Ball | from | Winston S. Churchill | October 1957". The preceding letter, dated 16 September 1957, contains 15 typed lines with holograph salutation, financial figure, and signature. The letter is typed on Churchill?s Hyde Park Gate stationery with the address crossed out and replaced with ?at La Capponcina | Cap d?ail, A.M.? This is the villa of Lord Beaverbrook (William Maxwell Aitken, 1879-1964), the Canadian-born media mogul and Tory political figure with whom Churchill had a sometimes tempestuous and tested, but nonetheless enduring, half-century of close friendship lasting from their first meeting in 1911 to Beaverbrook?s death. Consonant with Churchill?s relationship with Arthur Lewis Ball, the letter concerns financial matters, discussing liquidation of ?the Rothschild investment?, doubtless a transaction carried out by Lloyds Bank where Churchill kept deposit accounts and investments. Churchill?s personal finance history was checkered with profligacy, including gambling, and it is perhaps not coincident that this letter about a significant, five figure investment liquidation was sent while Churchill was staying on the French Riviera with his wealthy friend, proximate to Monaco?s Monte Carlo. Arthur Lewis Ball was Churchill's friend and financial advisor. Ball was manager of Lloyds, Cox's & King's Branch at 6 Pall Mall, where Churchill banked. Ball lived at Tunbridge Wells and would call in at Chartwell on his way up to London. There is a good record of Ball's often warm correspondence with Churchill, particularly in the 1950s when A History of the English-Speaking Peoples was published. On 6 December 1952, Churchill wrote to Ball: "It gave me so much pleasure to receive your letter" and went on "I think I opened my account with you [Lloyds Bank] when I went to Sandhurst, which was in 1894." Churchill concluded: "I have not needed to bother you as everything seems to be well looked after under your guidance." When Churchill received the Nobel Prize in Literature and the prize funds were paid into his account at Lloyds Bank, Ball wrote to Churchill to add ?my congratulations and best wishes". (Letter of 11 December 1953) In August 1957, Ball wrote a condolence letter to Churchill regarding his old cavalry unit, the 4th Hussars, and Churchill replied with warm acknowledgement and thanks on 12 August 1957: "I am so much obliged to you for your thought in writing me a letter of condolence?? A month later Churchill wrote the letter to Ball offered here. Two months later, Churchill would inscribe this first edition, first printing copy of Volume III of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples to Ball. The work is Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. This set would be notable for condition even without the author's inscription. The inscribed Volume III is truly fine in a fine dust jacket. Searching for flaws, we find only three tiny spots to the text block fore edge. The remaining three volumes in the set are likewise truly fine examples, free of previous ownership marks, or visible wear, in fine, bright dust jackets with no losses. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The letter is clean, creased into quarters consonant with original mailing, with a single file hole and small pin holes in the upper left corner.         Rapsodiia v stile bliuz ?

Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe muzykal'noe izdatel'stvo [State Music Publishers],, 1956. Perelozhenie dlia dvukh fortepiano [Rhapsody in Blue ? transcribed for two pianos]. Quarto (287 × 222 mm). Wire-stitched in the original printed wrappers. Staples a touch rusted, just a little rubbed on the spine and at the wrap edges, pale toning, last leaf creased, overall very good. Apparently the first Russian edition of Rhapsody in Blue, and as was often the case with Muzizdat publications of contemporary Western music, it is possible that it was a piracy. Uncommon, no copy traced on OCLC. Introduction by the leading soviet musicologist Grigori Schneerson.

The Silver Sword ( With The Correct First Issue Wrapper )

The First UK Printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1956. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. It would be fine except for mild spotting to the text block, paste-downs and end papers. The pages remain clean apart from one or two spots to the page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. It is the correct First Issue. Mild edge-wear with a little loss a the spine ends. Mild toning to the spine and the flap edges. Closed tears to the lower front edge and at the folds. Mild toning and spotting to the rear cover. The C. Walter Hodges wrapper artwork ( reproduced as the colour frontispiece ) looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A very presentable copy and scarce to find as such in this condition. 'One of the most remarkable children's books since 1945' (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature). The Silver Sword, has become a classic, bringing to life the story of four refugee children and their search for their parents in the chaos of Europe immediately after World War II.         Howl and Other Poems; Introduction by William Carlos Williams

City Lights Books, San Francisco 1956 - 5" x 6.13" pp. 44, One of the foundational troika of Beat Literature along with "On The Road" and "Naked Lunch". This Poem has survived a First Amendment challenge in court paving the way for a new generation of artists. This Second Edition is even more rare than the First as more than two-thirds of the original printing was confiscated and destroyed by the customs agency. As with first edition printing, Dedication to Lucian Carr is missing and book printing is in grey-blue. A light water spot along the half inch closest to the spine on this original printed white band pasted to black cover, which is all that keeps this from being a very fine copy. "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix," (p. 9).         The Lord of the Rings, 1st UK Edition Early Printings with Dustjackets and Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen and Unwin in 1956 & 1957, these books are early impressions of the 1st UK Edition, originally published in 1954/1954/1955 respectively. The Fellowship of the Rings is a 5th impression published in 1956, in its correct 5th impression dustjacket. The Two Towers is a 4th impression published in 1956, in a original 4th impression dustjacket. The Return of the King is a 3rd impression published in 1957, in its correct 3rd impression dustjacket. All three books have their original dustjackets which are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing with minor chips and loss to the edges, mostly the spine fold areas on the Two Towers and The Fellowship of the Ring. The Return of the King slows a bit more soiling to the dustjacket and a slight bit of fading to the red lettering. It also has some damp marks to the front edges of the front and back boards, causing some mottling and fading to the red cloth, does not appear to have effected the textblock at all. Overall these books are in remarkable condition with only the most minor of loss or wear to the edges, mainly at the spine folds, and only very light tanning to the spines. The dustjackets are priced and not clipped and covered in archival protectors. The books are in Very Good Plus condition with a bit of offsetting to the endpapers in the The Fellowship and less so The Two Towers. No previous owners names, no other writing or markings to the books. The gilt to the spines are all clean and bright. Each book has it's own original foldout map tipped in at the rear, and all are in excellent condition with no tears or extra folds noted. A custom bonded red leather slipcase to house and protect this wonderful set of books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956?8. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. An excellent, bright set, with a little foxing to edges of text block, in the bright jackets with slightly sunned spines and a few nicks to extremities. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations ? the British Empire and the United States ? was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

Konkret realism. / Bærtling, Jacobsen, Mortensen. Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm. Mars-april 1956.

Stockholm, Liljevalchs Konsthall, 1956. 4:o. 80 s. Rikt illustrerad i färg och svartvitt, bl. a. med sex inklistrade seriegrafier. Vackert och påkostat klotband i olikfärgade fält, baserat på katalogens karakteristiska omslag (Isbergs, Norrköping). Omslagen medbundna. Nyskick. Med dedikation av Richard Mortensen daterad 1961. Med essayer om Olle Baertling (av Oscar Reutersvärd), Robert Jacobsen (av Rolf Söderberg) och Richard Mortensen (av Karl G. Hultén). "Slagordet Konkret realism skapades förmodligen av Richard Mortensen. [...] [...]
