A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, full set of British first editions, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is a full, four-volume set of first editions of Winston Churchill?s A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant bindings feature hubbed and gilt ruled spines, each bearing the title and author, as well as the individual volume numbers and subtitles. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers. Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on each lower front pastedown. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London. Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal. The flaw that prevents our doubling or trebling the price of this set is two shallow and unobtrusive but nonetheless present six-inch vertical razor knife scars on the front cover Volume III. Ostensibly this defect is the result of a previous owner or over-zealous customs agent. Apart from this flaw, condition of the set is fine. The bindings are square, clean, bright, tight, and supple with a few trivial blemishes but no appreciable wear. The contents are well-suited to the bindings ? notably bright and clean with no previous ownership marks and none of the customary spotting. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958.  The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The work itself was two decades in the making.  The Churchillian conceptions that underpinned it were lifelong. The cultural commonality and vitality of English-speaking peoples animated Churchill throughout his life, from his Victorian youth in an ascendant British Empire to his twilight in the midst of the American century. Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939.  The work was fittingly interrupted by an unprecedented alliance among the English-speaking peoples during the Second World War - an alliance Churchill personally did much to cultivate, cement, and sustain.  The interruption continued as Churchill bent his literary efforts to his six-volume history, The Second World War, and then his remaining political energies to his second and final premiership from 1951-1955. Please anticipate the possibility of additional shipping, depending on destination. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A267.1(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A138(aa), Langworth p.315.

        Profiles In Courage

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition, early printing. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Monsignor Charles D. McInnis with every good wish John Kennedy." Near fine in an excellent dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) discussing the main character of his Space Trilogy and his views on Devils

1956. A single sheet, dated January 17, 1956, written on both sides and signed by the author. With it's original mailing envelope addressed in the author's hand. "Dear Mr. Middleton, Ransom does pray (in so many words) in the previous volume Out of the Silent Planet; and the dialogue between Our Lord and Ransom in V. to V. [Voyage to Venus] may, I think, be regarded as a description of that kind of "prayer" in which God is, if I may so put it, "the Aggressor." I'm not sure that I know what you mean by "translation." If you mean that when the conflict which (for us in this life) is inward, is "translated" mythically into events in space, the converse procedure of the spiritual life as we now know it can't be very comfortably worked in as well - then, I think my answer is that you're right. But one mustn't be too rigid. He prays (adores) like B. as one member of the angelic antiphon at the end. The existence of devils is no part of my credo but it is one of the things I, just as a chap, happen to believe. (No Dualism of course. The Devil is but the opposite of God; God is defined as "that which has no opposite." The Devil is only the opposite of Michael. (I wish they wouldn't conduct their little duel in our back yard, but there it is). I don't know what (what the devil) an impersonal cosmic force is: when they mean something like gravitation. But if the word "impersonal" gives anyone comfort, "happy man be's dole". Yours sincerely, C. S. Lewis A fascinating and hitherto unknown letter by Lewis, not collected in "The Letters of C.S. Lewis," edited by W.H. Lewis (1987).

        Boat in Dry Dock Watercolor

1956. Very Good. Painting. A watercolor painting from James Reynolds. From auction records, according to Reynolds' first wife, this was one of only two watercolors he painted sometime from 1956 to 1958, when the rest of his paintings were oil and tempura. A Hollywood studio artist at the time, Reynolds later became well-known for his depictions of the American West. This is one of two paintings of a boat in dry dock painted around the same time; the other is signed but this one isn't. The painting is in very good condition with an adhesive mark on a few millimeters of one edge from framing. ; Watercolor; 21" x 28" .

New York: Dodd Mead, 1956. First American Edition. Cloth. VG+/VG-. Inscribed by Breuer "To the Bob Osborns with all good wishes' Lajkó December '55." Few architects of the last century achieved such international fame as Breuer. To his friends, he was known simply as Lajko. The Osborns to whom Breur inscribes his book are Robert Osborn, the satirical illustrtator, and his wife Eloid, who started the traveling exhibition program at MOMA and worked with UNESCO in the last 1940s. Certainly Breuer had dealings with Elodie working on his plan for the UNESCO center in Paris in 1952, and he would also been known by Osborns for his work on residences in Litchfield, CT, where the Osborns lived after leaving Manhattan. Dustjacket rubbed and chipped around the edges, book very good. Signed books or materials by Breuer are scarce, and we could find no sales record of his signing or inscribing any book as "Lajko," including this title, in which he reviews his life work.

        Contract signed

1956 - FAULKNER, William. Typed Contract between William Faulkner and Twentieth Century-Fox, being an Option Agreement for the motion picture rights to THE SOUND AND THE FURY. Signed twice by Faulkner. Beverly Hills, California: Twentieth Century-Fox, September 1, 1956. Nine pages, plus one page with Notaries' signatures, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches. Contract with two alterations on pages 3 & 4, each initialed by Faulkner. With a 3-page carbon "Synopsis of Contract", by the Legal Department of Twentieth Century-Fox, summarizing the terms of the agreement. $21,000.Typed contract twice signed by Faulkner for the sale of the rights to film his masterpiece The Sound and the Fury to Twentieth Century-Fox for $35,000. Twice initialed by Faulkner near corrections.Faulkner's great novel""many would call it one of the most important American novels of the 20th century""was first published by Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith in 1929. Radically experimental in form, with four different narrators (including the conscious stream of a castrated idiot), each recounting an aspect of the tragic demise of the Compson family, and touching on the untouchable (to Hollywood) themes of race, incest, madness, and suicide, The Sound and the Fury is quite possibly the least filmable of any great American novels. Nevertheless, 27 years after the book's publication, Hollywood was clearly interested, and in this document Faulkner agreed to sell the movie rights to Twentieth Century-Fox for $35,000, to be paid out over several years. In 1959, Fox's movie The Sound and the Fury""which can only be called a loose adaptation of Faulkner's novel""was released, starring Joanne Woodward as Quentin Compson and Yul Brynner as Jason. Holes punched in the left margin; laid into studio's printed brown paper wrappers. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

27 tls. eigenh. Briefe und (Bild-)Postkarten mit U. Verschiedene Orte, 1940er bis 1960er Jahre.

[...]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. IV. 1956). Armee in verklärtem Licht darstellte.
