Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) discussing the main character of his Space Trilogy and his views on Devils

1956. A single sheet, dated January 17, 1956, written on both sides and signed by the author. With it's original mailing envelope addressed in the author's hand. "Dear Mr. Middleton, Ransom does pray (in so many words) in the previous volume Out of the Silent Planet; and the dialogue between Our Lord and Ransom in V. to V. [Voyage to Venus] may, I think, be regarded as a description of that kind of "prayer" in which God is, if I may so put it, "the Aggressor." I'm not sure that I know what you mean by "translation." If you mean that when the conflict which (for us in this life) is inward, is "translated" mythically into events in space, the converse procedure of the spiritual life as we now know it can't be very comfortably worked in as well - then, I think my answer is that you're right. But one mustn't be too rigid. He prays (adores) like B. as one member of the angelic antiphon at the end. The existence of devils is no part of my credo but it is one of the things I, just as a chap, happen to believe. (No Dualism of course. The Devil is but the opposite of God; God is defined as "that which has no opposite." The Devil is only the opposite of Michael. (I wish they wouldn't conduct their little duel in our back yard, but there it is). I don't know what (what the devil) an impersonal cosmic force is: when they mean something like gravitation. But if the word "impersonal" gives anyone comfort, "happy man be's dole". Yours sincerely, C. S. Lewis A fascinating and hitherto unknown letter by Lewis, not collected in "The Letters of C.S. Lewis," edited by W.H. Lewis (1987).

New York: Dodd Mead, 1956. First American Edition. Cloth. VG+/VG-. Inscribed by Breuer "To the Bob Osborns with all good wishes' Lajkó December '55." Few architects of the last century achieved such international fame as Breuer. To his friends, he was known simply as Lajko. The Osborns to whom Breur inscribes his book are Robert Osborn, the satirical illustrtator, and his wife Eloid, who started the traveling exhibition program at MOMA and worked with UNESCO in the last 1940s. Certainly Breuer had dealings with Elodie working on his plan for the UNESCO center in Paris in 1952, and he would also been known by Osborns for his work on residences in Litchfield, CT, where the Osborns lived after leaving Manhattan. Dustjacket rubbed and chipped around the edges, book very good. Signed books or materials by Breuer are scarce, and we could find no sales record of his signing or inscribing any book as "Lajko," including this title, in which he reviews his life work.

        Contract signed

1956 - FAULKNER, William. Typed Contract between William Faulkner and Twentieth Century-Fox, being an Option Agreement for the motion picture rights to THE SOUND AND THE FURY. Signed twice by Faulkner. Beverly Hills, California: Twentieth Century-Fox, September 1, 1956. Nine pages, plus one page with Notaries' signatures, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches. Contract with two alterations on pages 3 & 4, each initialed by Faulkner. With a 3-page carbon "Synopsis of Contract", by the Legal Department of Twentieth Century-Fox, summarizing the terms of the agreement. $21,000.Typed contract twice signed by Faulkner for the sale of the rights to film his masterpiece The Sound and the Fury to Twentieth Century-Fox for $35,000. Twice initialed by Faulkner near corrections.Faulkner's great novel""many would call it one of the most important American novels of the 20th century""was first published by Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith in 1929. Radically experimental in form, with four different narrators (including the conscious stream of a castrated idiot), each recounting an aspect of the tragic demise of the Compson family, and touching on the untouchable (to Hollywood) themes of race, incest, madness, and suicide, The Sound and the Fury is quite possibly the least filmable of any great American novels. Nevertheless, 27 years after the book's publication, Hollywood was clearly interested, and in this document Faulkner agreed to sell the movie rights to Twentieth Century-Fox for $35,000, to be paid out over several years. In 1959, Fox's movie The Sound and the Fury""which can only be called a loose adaptation of Faulkner's novel""was released, starring Joanne Woodward as Quentin Compson and Yul Brynner as Jason. Holes punched in the left margin; laid into studio's printed brown paper wrappers. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Photograph inscribed

1956 - TRUMAN, Harry. Photograph inscribed. No place, August 12, 1956. Black-and-white photographic print, measuring 13 by 10-1/2 inches; matted and framed, entire piece measures 21-1/2 by 19 inches. $12,500.Large photographic print showing Truman smiling and holding up the famous issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune in which his loss to Dewey was erroneously predicted based on incomplete returns, inscribed: "To Courteney Darber with happy memories! 8/12/56 Harry Truman."This inscribed photograph captures Truman gleefully holding up the Chicago Daily Tribune, which erroneously announced his electoral defeat. During the 1930s and 1940s, editor and publisher Robert "Bertie" McCormick used the Chicago Daily Tribune's editorial pages to promote his conservative agenda. The Tuesday, November 2, 1948 headline was "Go to the Polls Today! / Landslide / for Dewey / is Expected / Democrats Cling / to Wisp of Hope." Most polls in the presidential campaign of 1948 showed the Republican candidate, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey, with such a commanding lead over Truman that some pollsters even quit polling voters weeks before the election, missing out on Truman's last-minute surge in popularity. On election night, Truman, aided by the Secret Service, sneaked away from reporters covering him in Kansas City and made his way to nearby Excelsior Springs, Missouri, a small resort town. There, he took a room in the local hotel, had a Turkish bath, and went to sleep. As East coast returns came in, Dewey took an early lead, winning all the northeast states from Maryland to Maine, except for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Then Truman started to pull ahead. However, some radio commentators, such as H.V. Kaltenborn of CBS, confidently predicted that once the "late returns" came in, Dewey would overcome Truman's lead and win.At midnight, Truman awoke and turned on the radio in his room; he heard Kaltenborn announce that, while Truman was still ahead in the popular vote, he couldn't possibly win. For the rest of his life, Truman would gleefully mimic Kaltenborn's voice predicting his defeat throughout that election night. Around 4 a.m., Truman awoke again, heard on the radio that his lead was nearly two million votes, and decided to ride back to Kansas City, and from there, take the train back to Washington, D.C. The Tribune had endorsed Dewey and the entire republican slate. In fact, 85% of the nation's daily newspapers supported the New York Governor. Returns were coming in slowly and the Tribune staff was running out of time before the printing deadline. The lead story in the Tribune by reporter Arthur Sears Henning began: "Dewey and Warren won a sweeping victory in the presidential election yesterday." A bit of unobtrusive creasing to photograph. Near-fine, handsomely framed. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956?8. 4 volumes, octavo. bound for Asprey in recent red morocco, titles to spines gilt, gilt raised bands, gilt rules to covers, marbled endpapers, all edges and turn-ins gilt. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. A fine set, handsomely bound. First editions, first impressions. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations ? the British Empire and the United States ? was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

Howl and Other Poems (Introduction by William Carlos Williams)

San Francisco: City Lights Pocket Bookshop, 1956. Original wraps. Near Fine. A remarkable Association copy of the 1956 1st City Lights edition (preceded only by an impossibly scarce {purportedly 25 copies} 1955 unbound, mimeographed edition of only the poem "Howl"). This copy not only conforms to all the 1st edition issue points required of the inaugural Pocket Poet edition but is in beautiful, near-pristine condition as well. Furthermore, THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY 5 OF THE KEY FIGURES IN THE BOOK'S GENESIS: 1) ALLEN GINSBERG (on the title page); 2) LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI (on the copyright page); 3) LUCIEN CARR (on the dedication page); 4) WILLIAM BURROUGHS (also on the dedication page); and 5) CARL SOLOMON (on the first blank endpaper). In other words, this copy is signed by the book's author, its publisher and by 3 of its 5 dedicatees (only Jack Kerouac's and Neal Cassady's signatures are missing from this copy). Notably, of the 5 signatures, Lucien Carr's seems to be by far the most uncommon on copies of "Howl". We know that his relationship with the Beats grew into an ambivalent one early on and it's well-established that he insisted Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti remove his name from the dedication page on all later printings of "Howl". History also tells us that Carr himself introduced William Burroughs (an old friend from their St. Louis upbringing) to Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg --and that Carr's infamous career at Columbia (as documented in the 2013 film "Kill Your Darlings") saw him not only as the most important muse to this budding literary scene but also, incredibly, as someone convicted of homicide and sent to prison (in spite of Kerouac's best efforts to help him cover up the crime). A fresh, tight copy, immaculate internally and easily Near Fine overall, while legitimately approaching Fine (even down to its unrusted staple). Also includes a former owner's hand-made chemise, a handsome, oversized cardboard reproduction of the book's front panel. And, somewhere along the line, the former owner of this copy even had Ginsberg sign the chemise "Allen Ginsberg for P.O." (Peter Orlovsky?). Of the 1,000 copies initially published, this must certainly rank as one of the most unusual --and significant.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, a full set of four British first editions inscribed and dated by Churchill to his friend and financial advisor in October 1957, with a typed, signed letter from Churchill dated September 1957

London: Cassell and Company. Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This full set of British first editions is inscribed and dated in October 1957 by Churchill to his friend and financial advisor, Arthur Lewis Ball, and accompanied by a September 1957 typed, signed letter from Churchill to Ball. The five-line inscription inked in blue on the Volume III front free endpaper reads: "To | Arthur Lewis Ball | from | Winston S. Churchill | October 1957". The preceding letter, dated 16 September 1957, contains 15 typed lines with holograph salutation, financial figure, and signature. The letter is typed on Churchill?s Hyde Park Gate stationery with the address crossed out and replaced with ?at La Capponcina | Cap d?ail, A.M.? This is the villa of Lord Beaverbrook (William Maxwell Aitken, 1879-1964), the Canadian-born media mogul and Tory political figure with whom Churchill had a sometimes tempestuous and tested, but nonetheless enduring, half-century of close friendship lasting from their first meeting in 1911 to Beaverbrook?s death. Consonant with Churchill?s relationship with Arthur Lewis Ball, the letter concerns financial matters, discussing liquidation of ?the Rothschild investment?, doubtless a transaction carried out by Lloyds Bank where Churchill kept deposit accounts and investments. Churchill?s personal finance history was checkered with profligacy, including gambling, and it is perhaps not coincident that this letter about a significant, five figure investment liquidation was sent while Churchill was staying on the French Riviera with his wealthy friend, proximate to Monaco?s Monte Carlo. Arthur Lewis Ball was Churchill's friend and financial advisor. Ball was manager of Lloyds, Cox's & King's Branch at 6 Pall Mall, where Churchill banked. Ball lived at Tunbridge Wells and would call in at Chartwell on his way up to London. There is a good record of Ball's often warm correspondence with Churchill, particularly in the 1950s when A History of the English-Speaking Peoples was published. On 6 December 1952, Churchill wrote to Ball: "It gave me so much pleasure to receive your letter" and went on "I think I opened my account with you [Lloyds Bank] when I went to Sandhurst, which was in 1894." Churchill concluded: "I have not needed to bother you as everything seems to be well looked after under your guidance." When Churchill received the Nobel Prize in Literature and the prize funds were paid into his account at Lloyds Bank, Ball wrote to Churchill to add ?my congratulations and best wishes". (Letter of 11 December 1953) In August 1957, Ball wrote a condolence letter to Churchill regarding his old cavalry unit, the 4th Hussars, and Churchill replied with warm acknowledgement and thanks on 12 August 1957: "I am so much obliged to you for your thought in writing me a letter of condolence?? A month later Churchill wrote the letter to Ball offered here. Two months later, Churchill would inscribe this first edition, first printing copy of Volume III of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples to Ball. The work is Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. This set would be notable for condition even without the author's inscription. The inscribed Volume III is truly fine in a fine dust jacket. Searching for flaws, we find only three tiny spots to the text block fore edge. The remaining three volumes in the set are likewise truly fine examples, free of previous ownership marks, or visible wear, in fine, bright dust jackets with no losses. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The letter is clean, creased into quarters consonant with original mailing, with a single file hole and small pin holes in the upper left corner.
