[Lewis, Jerry] Head, Edith (costume designer) Tashlin, Frank
Paramount Pictures. Four original costume designs intended for Jerry Lewis' character in the 1955 film "Artists and Models," with holograph notations and illustrations painted by costume designer Edith Head. The illustrations largely feature simple shirt-and-pants combinations. One, a white t-shirt and nerdily rolled-up blue jeans, features a silk scarf belt next to which Head has emphatically written "NO!" A later film of the popular Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis duo, "Artists and Models" depicts comic book writer Martin stealing ideas his kooky roommate comes up with in his dreams, while the pair simultaneously attempt to woo their very attractive neighbors. Unarguably the most famous costume designer in the history of cinema, Edith Head was known for her work with director Alfred Hitchcock, and for extensively consulting with leading actresses, becoming highly sought after as a result. Head was nominated for thirty five Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, winning eight. She still holds the record for the largest number of Academy Awards won by any woman. 15 x 20 inches, pencil and gouache on illustration board. Near Fine, with the occasional toning, soil, or bumped corner. Hirschhorn, p. 349.

[Click Below for Full Description]

LIPCHITZ, Yulla). Walter J. Fischel, Jacques Lipchitz, Peter
(1941-1955). Near Fine. A large collection of nearly 300 letters, consisting of about 250 love letters and 50 letters of related personal correspondence, sent to Yulla Lipchitz, sculptor and photographer, and the wife of the renowned sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Included in the collection are 12 holographic letters by Jacques Lipchitz, eight black and white photographs of Yulla with two of her lovers taken before her marriage to Lipchitz, several telegrams and post cards, a few of Yulla's draft replies, and several pieces of manuscript and printed ephemera. Nearly all of the letters are in English, with about 20 in German. Mostly near fine. Although Yulla, her first husband Frederick Mott, and most of her correspondents were German-Jews who fled Germany in the late 1930s, nearly all of the letters are written in English (with occasional flourishes in German), and nearly all abound with deeply felt emotional passions for her, as indicated by such frequent salutations as: "Darling Pussilein, my love!" - "Darlichingen! Ich Küsse dich" - "Yullalein, love, Kisses!" Over 150 of the letters are from Walter J. Fischel, an important German-Jewish scholar known internationally for his pioneering studies of Oriental Jewry, and two other men (about 25 letters each) with whom Yulla was having illicit affairs during the War years. The letters of all three men are remarkable for their impassioned, often wild declarations of love, and their frequent pleas to arrange meetings and to get married, if Yulla's husband would grant her a divorce. In the end, after an attempt to reconcile with her h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Book has been excellently preserved. Highly collectible copy. 1955 Parade of Pleasure Geoffrey Wagner Library Publishers HCDJ Fine Collectible This is the 1955 Library Publishers edition of Parade of Pleasure. The book was first released in 1954 by Derek Verschoyle in London. This copy has been excellently preserved. Original dust jacket is protected by a plastic dust jacket cover. Condition notes: Book structure is in fine condition. No corner bumping or edge wear. Some foxing to front and back flyleaves. Top of dust jacket spine is very lightly chipped. Book has been excellently preserved. Highly collectible copy. From the dust jacket front flap: The author of this book calls it "a study of popular iconography in the U.S.A., with special reference to movies, comic-books, pin-up magazines, television, radio, jazz and murder mystery stories." In his analysis of these forms of entertainment he is concerned with showing up certain disquieting trends in their content and direction. The overall tendency, he believes, is towards violence and sadism, and he points out that a very high proportion of the most popular kinds of entertainment is given up to themes of this nature. Within this general tendency emphasis is laid on certain types of behavior which seem to reflect deeper trends in American life. One of the most interesting sections of this surprising book is that devoted to American "comic" fiction. Mr. Wagner p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Here I have for sale a very rare and extremely sought after variant copy of Ian Fleming's 3rd book title 'Moonraker'. As you can see from the photos, this rare title is in simply stunning condition. [Fashion]. LEIGH, David
np [New York?]: [ca. 1955]. 18 large completed (plus 6 smaller) loose portraits executed in pen & ink with watercolor or guache on paper. Large works all approx. 19" x 12"; smaller 12.5" x 9". With a large 17" x 12" spiral-bound artist's notebook containing eight additional color studies, plus one sketch. Also includes 18 other loose preliminary works, various sizes and media - including one brief series of Shakespearean costume design. Most SIGNED by the artist. Generally very good or better overall. Very good. Lovely selection of original fashion art depicting various women's runway dresses, all ca. 1955. We have been unable to discover much about the artist, Mr. Leigh. But he was clearly an accomplished designer, colorist, and draftsman. We do know he was based in New York City and assume given the professional skill with which these works were executed that he likely worked in the industry, either for a designer or a fashion magazine. The portraits themselves are quintessentially post-war in their style and taste, clearly indebted to VOGUE and their artists. A beautiful primary collection of 1950s high fashion. Cook, Captain James
Published for the Hakluyt Society at the University Press, 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. Four volumes in five, along with the Charts & Views portfolio. "These are the standard modern authorities based on Cook's journals, edited from the original manuscripts by J.C. Beaglehole, assisted by J.A. Dawson, J.W. Davidson, and R.A. Skelton. For the first time Cook's records are faithfully reproduced; the official narratives of the eighteenth century were 'improved upon.' Admiral W.J.L. Wharton's 1893 edition of Cook's first voyage falls short both in its method of compilation and in its accuracy. Beaglehole's scholarly notes are some of the most important research ever done on the Pacific." The Hakluyt Society, Extra Series, No XXXIV-XXVII. Four color frontispieces, with more than 250 illustrations and maps (many folding). The portfolio is complete with 58 views and charts (many folding). Thick octavos. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt stamping. Some mild foxing to the portfolio. Four of the five dust jackets are price-clipped, with a bit of sun fading along the spines and some minor edgewear. A very good set. Hill 367. Very good / Very good. Ferlinghetti, Lawrence] Kees, Weldon
Adrian Wilson, San Francisco, 1955. Illustrated broadside, offset printed in black on beige hand-made paper, measuring 6.5" x 20" (16.5cm x 50.5cm). A few old folds from mailing smoothed-out, closed tear at upper margin, with original recipient's address (photographer Chester Kessler) and two tiny remnants of hinging tape to upper corners on verso; Very Good+. Attractive advertising broadside for the first Poets' Follies in San Francisco, the brain-child of poets Weldon Kees and Michael Grieg, who conceived of the event in 1954 after attending a "wofefully stilted" reading by W.H. Auden at San Francisco State College's new Poetry Center. "Why not enliven the readings by dramatizing them?" he asked. "Why not make an evening of poetry lively?" They decided on a name for the idea, Poets' Follies, a stage show that was part poetry, part theater, ballet, minstrel show, and chautauqua.Three weeks later, most of the cast had been assembled: Kees, Grieg, Vincent McHugh - and Lawrence Ferling, whose debut in the Follies would convince him to adopt a "real" poet's name, Ferlinghetti" (Reidel, James. Vanished Act: The Life and Art of Weldon Kees (2003), p.327). The event, held at the Theatre Arts Colony building, opened to a sold-out crowd of San Francisco's close-knit bohemia. It was a lively night - poems and songs performed by Kees; Ferlinghetti read from his translations of Jacques Prévert; part of a play by McHugh; burlesque dancer Lily Ayers, "a platinum blonde, who could pass for Marilyn Monroe," performed and read poems by Sara Teasdale and T.S. Eliot; a dance number to the po … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolkien, J.R.R.
George Allen and Unwin 1955-56. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1956, 1956, 1955) The Lord of the Rings trilogy. UK first edition set ( The Return of the King first printing; The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers fourth printings respectively), published by George Allen and Unwin. The set consist of: 1) The Fellowship of the Ring (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket). 2) The Two Towers (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket) 3) The Return of the King (1st printing, 1955, in the correct first printing dust jacket without blurbs under the titles listed on the flap; second state (or variant) with a 4 at the bottom of page 49, one of 7,000 copies printed). 7,000 copies were printed of The Return of the King in its first print run. There are several states or variants of the first edition, with a 4 or without a 4 on page 49. Tolkien bibliography experts change their minds every few years what state precedes the other. Thus, we prefer the term variant to state. Notice that the first and second volume come with third impression dust jackets respectively. Since the third and fourth print runs were published within a few months apart it is likely that the publisher used the excess third printing dust jackets for the fourth print run. However, third printing wrappers are more valuable than fourth printings. Condition: near fine. All three books retain their original maps as called for. Return of the King , which is the most valuable of the set is very clean and the only flaw is the slight browning of the wrapper on the spine. Otherwise fine. All three … [Click Below for Full Description]

From the edition limited to 210 numbered copies, this is copy N.95 reserved for Madame Lily Ades. The small format version of Ambroise Vollard's text illustrated by Georges Rouault was issued some 20 years after the large folio version of 1932. 'Vollard wrote more than 10 works on the subject of Pere Ubu, beginning with Le Grand Almanach du Pere Ubu (1900 - 1901) and ending with Les Reincarnations du Pere Ubu (1932). The character was based on Allfred Jarry's Ubu Roi, a play first performed in 1896 and marking the beginning of the Theatre de l'Absurde, which had great vogue in Dada and Surrealist circles. Whereas Jarry's Ubu was a personification of crass malevolence and dictatorial buffoonery, Vollard's character was made into a character that typified political and bureaucratic corruption.'
