1955. Condition: Good. Dust jacket and covers stained. Boards slightly bowed. Front free endpaper where inscribed and signed by Budd Schulberg is partially darkened. Make an Offer! Budd Schulberg WATERFRONT Signed and Inscribed by the Author on the Front Free Endpaper Random House, New York Stated First Printing, 1955 This signature is interesting because it occurred on the night the Rocky Marciano-Archie Moore fight was cancelled at Yankee stadium due to bad weather. Marciano's last title bout was against 41-year-old Archie Moore, on September 21, 1955. The bout was originally scheduled for September 20, but because of hurricane warnings, it had to be delayed a day. Marciano was knocked down for a four count in the second round, but recovered and retained his title with a knockout in round nine. (Wikipedia) In 1935, Dempsey opened Jack Dempsey's Restaurant on Eighth Avenue and 50th Street, across from the third Madison Square Garden, the name of which was changed later to Jack Dempsey's Broadway Restaurant in New York City's Times Square, when it moved to Broadway between 49th and 50th Streets. The restaurant was open until 1974. . Most nights would find Dempsey's famous proprietor on hand to greet guests, sign autographs, pose for pictures, and hold court with people from all walks of life. I have tried to ascertain who the "Jack" is and have speculated it may be Jack Dempsey who must have been there to see the fight. I would appreciate any information anyone might have on this matter. I am hoping this listing will help me find out. All books are in the condition stated a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Molnár, László
1955. Size: Tram poster (cca. 17 x 24 cm). Original vintage Hungarian commercial poster maquette by Laszlo Molnar from 1955 Poster maquette for Keravill The word Keravill is an abbreviation in Hungarian for the words 39 Ker eacute kp aacute r R aacute di oacute Villamoss aacute g 39 which means Bicycle Radio and Electricity referring to the productcs bicycles motorbikes and household appliances available in the stores They only had retails in Budapest but it was advertised all across the country Keravill survived the change of the system in 1989 and it was privatized afterwards Although all Keravill shops closed in 2004 they did play an important role in the development of retail trade They introduced to the Hungarian market free home delivery and a cashier system which could keep track of the supply They also started television broadcast from vcr on Mondays when otherwise there was no television program This maquette beautifully pictures a part of the selection offered by Keravill oven fridge lamps fan iron bicycle toaster etc The blue colour with some red highlights the carefully organized products and the diagonally arranged composition projects tranquillity The maquette was made in 1955 when the obligatory socialist realist style prevailed in poster art However this piece does not lack the artistic values like many socialist realist pieces do It bears some of the obligatory realistic characteristic but the gentle brushwork and the pastell colours make the image soft and pleasant [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[ORGANIZED LABOR - GRAPHICS] AFL-CIO
1955. N.p.. Ephemera. A pair of exceptional original photographic portraits of John L. Lewis, first President of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, and Samuel Gompers, first President of the American Federation of Labor. Photographer and date are unspecified, so it is impossible to pinpoint these placards' provenance, but they were presumably intended for display either at an early AFL-CIO event or as a permanent decoration in an AFL-CIO union hall (a scan of public images of the early AFL-CIO conventions turns up no apparent matches). As the AFL-CIO merger took place in 1955, we tentatively assume a post-1955 date, though the style and typeface appear earlier and we can imagine any number of scenarios in which such placards might have been displayed together prior to the merger. In any event, a unique example of labor-movement iconography, especially desirable given their extraordinary size and format. Two round ply-board placards, each 36" diameter with original photographic portraits mounted recto and verso, with printed captions in plate. Grommets at upper extremities for hanging. Images rubbed, with surface scratches and small losses, some surface soiling, still Very Good. An extraordinary survival.

René Portocarrero (born Havana, 24 February 1912 died Havana, 7 April 1985) was a Cuban artist recognised internationally for his achievements. Portocarrero began his artistic education at the San Alejandro academy, but left early and is hence considered 'self taught'. He put on his first exhibition in 1934, at the Havana Lyceum, beginning a long and fruitful career which included a 1937 collaboration with Mariano Rodríguez and work as a 'free studies' teacher of painting and sculpture. After travels in Haiti, Europe and the United States he gave his first show to an overseas audience at Julien Levy's gallery in New York City in 1945. In 1950 he worked with Wifredo Lam, Mariano, Martinez Pedro and Amelia Palaez in the village of Santiago de Las Vegas. In 1961 he had meetings with Fidel Castro in the Jose Marti National Library where they discussed culture. René received lessons in painting from Nicolás Guillén Landrián. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nació en El Cerro, uno de los barrios periféricos de La Habana. Merton, Thomas
Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1955. First edition, early printing of Merton's reflections on the spiritual life. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "A - with all best wishes in Xt Fr. M Louis." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some light wear to the crown and foot of the spine. Books signed by Merton are rare as he lived most of his life in the Abbey of Gethsemani. In 1941, aspiring author Thomas Merton decided to give up a promising literary career in New York to enter the Abbey of Gethsemani, a community of monks belonging to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists), the most ascetic Roman Catholic monastic order. From Gethsemani, Merton proceeded to become arguably the most influential American Catholic author of the 20th century. The twenty-seven years he spent in the monastery impelled him into the political arena, where he became, according to Daniel Berrigan, the conscience of the peace movement of the 1960's. In No Man Is An Island, Merton explains the necessity of spirituality in creating a meaningful life through sixteen chapters including: Love Can Be Kept Only by Being Given Away, The Inward Solitude, and Silence. Greene, Graham
William Heinemann Ltd [1955], London. Octavo, cloth. "Graham Greene's new book is quite different from anything he has written before. It is a political novel -- or parable -- about the war in Indochina, employing its characters less as individuals than as representatives of their nations or political factions. Easily, with long-practiced and even astonishing skill, speaking with the voice of a British reporter who is forced, despite himself, toward political action and commitment, Greene tells a complex but compelling story of intrigue and counter-intrigue, bombing and murder. Into it is mixed the rivalry of two white men for a Vietnamese girl." NY Times book review, 11 March, 1956. Filmed twice, first in 1958 and again in 2002, the latter production being truer to the novel. Small splash mark to lower right front corner, small bubbling to cloth at lower left front cover, a nearly fine copy in a fine dust jacket with a very tiny nick at lower left spine edge. The wrap around band is present with no fading to the spine. An attractive copy. (23543) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

NOUGE (Paul).
[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Waltari, Mika, Schriftsteller (1908-1979)
Laukkoski, Finnland, 25. VI, 1955. 1? SS. Gr.-4to. [Click Below for Full Description]

Carson, Rachel
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1955. First edition of Carson's classic work, which explores marine life that takes us into "a truly extraordinary world" (The Atlantic Monthly). Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Signed by Rachel Carson on the half-title page. Illustrated by Bob Hines. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Uncommon signed. Known for "catching the life breath of science on the still glass of poetry," nature writer and marine biologist Rachel Carson is an icon of environmentalism, and her first love was the sea (Time). In this book, she explores rocky shores, sandy beaches, and coral reefs, leading us into unknown worlds to catch the evanescent beauty of a tide pool and tell the story of a grain of sand, and conveys the true complexity, beauty, and wonder of marine life, both animals and plants. "It is a truly extraordinary world which Miss Carson vividly unfolds to us . . . a world full of marvels such as the tiny periwinkle, which has 3,500 teeth, and the sea pansy, which has responded to the struggle for survival by turning itself from an individual into a colony" (The Atlantic Monthly) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Nabokov, Vladimir
Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. The Olympia Press, Paris, 1955. A true first printing of the first edition of Lolita with the requisite points of identification: both volumes have 900 francs printed on the back without a sticker, and volume one is lacking the page numbers for pgs. 11 & 12. Both volumes are in very good condition, without marks or any prev. owner's name. There is a little creasing to the covers, and the cover wrappers on Vol 1 are starting to come away (please see photos for detail) Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is widely recognized as one of the most important novels of the 20th Century. When it was rejected by all the major American publishers due to it's controversial subject matter, he turned to the Olympia Press in Paris. Nabokov's joy was tempered by the shoddy attention to detail exhibited by the publisher, and the typos, and because the novel initially received almost no reviews, good, bad, or indifferent. Of more concern to him, was the dual copyright assigned to the novel, in both Nabokov's and Olympia's names.

George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London, 1955. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring (Fourth Impression, November1955); Part II - The Two Towers (Second Impression, 1955); Part III - The Return of the King (First Edition, First Impression, 1955). A rebound set of first editions in 1/4 black leather with three raised bands, red leather title label and gilt lettering to the spine. Cream cloth covers and black page marker, an unusual and quirky set, probably bound shortly after purchased. Slight scuffing to the spine and light marks to the boards, otherwise a solid set. Slightly browned pages, as is often the case with early copies, and parts II and III with some spotting and marks to pages as seen in photos. All maps present, generally clean with a few light marks, small tears at joins and in part III the map was bound in upside down. Not a perfect set, however unique, in its own way! **More photos available on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DROGUET (Robert), STARITSKY (Ania).
[Click Below for Full Description]

[ORGANIZED LABOR - GRAPHICS] AFL-CIO
