Altmann, Bertalan
1955. Size: Square (cca. 18 x 18 cm). This original hand painted design was created for a commercial ad advertising custom shoemaking in the 11th Trade Union of Shoemakers The artwork was created by Bertalan Altmann Altmann often created poster designs for state celebrations and anniversaries in the late 1950s He designed modernist compositions during the time when the visual language of the official propaganda was Socialist Realism Although he employed the socialist content it didn rsquo t have the typical realist portrayal all the time This artwork is a fine commercial design probably created in the second part of the 1950s After the tough years of the obligatory socialist realist style in the early 1950s in the second part of the decade poster designers could continue to create in the styles they were involved before Modernist tendencies came up and expressive styles were applied again The design here also has quite a modernist look It depicts a light grey moccasin in the centre athwart placed on a white paper with a tape measure loosely thrown on a wooden surface The typograpy appears above and below in yellow The simplified stylized decorative portrayal reminds of the former Art Deco style which was one of the most important tendencies of the interwar period in Hungarian and international poster art The composition bears the characteristics of another former tendency the German Plakatstil Poster Style The so called ldquo object posters rdquo deriving from the German term Sachplakat consisted of a realistic representation of the advertised product with hardly any other … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bushmiller, Ernie (artist)
N.p.: N.p., 1955. Original four-panel artwork by Ernie Bushmiller for the June 3, 1955 daily installment of his seminal comic strip Nancy. This particular strip features both Nancy and Sluggo. As with American cinema, it was the French who first championed the studied simplicity of Bushmiller's un-deconstructible combination of rigid artistic style and even more rigidly governed humor. In 2012, Fantagraphics Press took on the long overdue task of putting the complete series into book form, a project that will take years to complete. In our estimation, Daniel Clowes put it best in his introduction to Fantagraphics' recently published first volume of Bushmiller's long run. Clowes astutely points out that the Nancy seems to come "from some primal Jungian dreamscape, miraculously transmitted into the morning paper." He goes on to say how he imagines Bushmiller at work, "carefully extracting every shred of irony from each frame." 21 x 6.25 inches. Black ink on heavy paper stock, with white-out, pasted-on paper additions, and brief pencil notations as always found on original comic strip art. One vertical fold at the center, one small ink smudge in the second panel. Very Good to Very Good plus overall.

Sylvia Plath
First American Edition, First Printing of The Colossus And Other Poems by Sylvia Plath. Stated First American Edition. Signed and dated by poet, editor and one-time Plath boyfriend Peter Davison on the front free endpaper. Clean attractive copy. Rubbing to edges of the dust jacket and small piece missing at the top of the spine. Put in a protective cover since the photos, $4.00 on the front flap. Book purchased from Peter Davison estate in Essex, Massachusetts, right near my bookstore. Davison, '..who for almost half a century was a pillar of the Boston literary and publishing world, thanks to his many years as an editor at the Atlantic Monthly,an his own 11 volumes of verse.' In Davison's book The Fading Smile, Poets in Boston, from Robert Frost to Robert Lowell to Sylvia Plath, 1955-1960, he writes of his relationship with Plath, 'It turns out that during the summer of 1955 Sylvia Plath was conducting four simultaneous love affairs, all of which she attempted to terminate before leaving America for a new life at Cambridge. She sent me a card that September from the Victoria and Albert Museum, on one side a picture of a faun with pan-pipes (a favorite symbol), and on the other the message "Somehow this charming chap reminded me of you," which I did find flattering, not knowing at the time that it was one of her other lovers, Richard Sassoon, who really reminded her of a faun.' Attractive copy with an interesting provenance.

ISAAC ASIMOV
BOOK IS NEAR FINE - JACKET VG+. This is the scarce hardcover FIRST EDITION 1955 of THE MARTIAN WAY by ISAAC ASIMOV, published by DOUBLEDAY SCIENCE FICTION. The jacket is in a mylar cover and is not price clipped ($2.95) - it does have scuff marks at the top and bottom of the spine area. 1955 is stated on the title page and FIRST EDITION is stated on the copyright page with no later printings listed. As the fourth picture shows there is a stain on the FFEP which also appears on the endpaper at the rear. I believe both of these are stains from over glue of the paper to the inside cover. There is no prior owners name inside and it is not ex-library or BOMC. This is a very hard to find copy of this title in such VG/NF condition. It will be packed carefully and mailed Priority insured. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ BID WITH CONFIDENCE --- NO RESERVE ---- BID WITH CONFIDENCE --- NO RESERVE **** GOD BLESS AMERICA **** BID WITH CONFIDENCE ----- NO RESERVE -----BID WITH CONFIDENCE ---- NO RESERVE -----****GOD BLESS AMERICA**** ___________________________________________________________________________________________ We prepare our shipments with TLC, books are shipped media mail, all with delivery confirmation.
