Winston S. Churchill
London: Educational Book Company, 1955. London: Educational Book Company, 1954. Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. This is a superior set of the first illustrated edition of The Second World War, beautifully preserved in the publishers original glassine dust wrappers. The first illustrated Chartwell edition of The Second World War was published soon after the British first edition and is aesthetically superior in every respect. It is also the final text, "in which all those first minor errors are corrected", according to the author. This particular edition is not only collectible, but also stands the test of time as among the most aesthetically pleasing and the most pleasant to actually read, The standard binding for this issue was a bright red embossed calico-grain cloth stamped in gilt with brown leather spine labels and another rectangular brown leather label on the front cover bearing a blind-stamped profile of Churchill. The books have an agreeable weight and size, measuring roughly 9.75 x 6.75 inches. The boards are stout and the spines have extensively gilt and blind ruled panels. The endpapers are dark red and the top edges of the pages are stained red. The text is entirely reset from the first edition and features hundreds of illustrations. Each volume also contains a color frontispiece and three-color maps. The very attractiveness of the sets invited handling, and the course red cloth is often scuffed, faded, and soiled, with the leather labels chipped. This set suffers none of those defects, and is a time capsule, preserved beneath the original glassine dust … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cambridge, Mass: Richard Brukenfeld, 1955. Condition: Very Good Minus. Scarce first edition of Corso's first book in staple-bound wraps with white covers titled in black and blue on front and priced "one dollar" in black on back. Sunning and light staining as is common for this edition. A small tear to top front of spine with perhaps 1/8 inch piece of cover paper missing with an adjacent closed tear of about 1/2 inch. Some very light rubbing to spine edges but generally an uncommonly well preserved cover. Text block is clean and tight with just two very small blemishes, one appears to be a little printer's ink offsetting, the other a tiny ink spot. A very desirable copy of Corso's first book, the production expenses of which were underwritten by students at Harvard and Radcliffe. (500 were printed but the poet is said to have stated that he only received 250, the other copies having been lost in the mail.) "The poems featured in the volume are usually considered apprentice works heavily indebted to Corso's reading. They are, however, unique in their innovative use of jazz rhythms most notably in "Requiem for 'Bird' Parker, Musician," which many call the strongest poem in the book's cadences of spoken English, and hipster jargon." (Poetry Foundation). Undoubtedly one of the giants of the San Francisco Poets of the "Beat Generation" Corso was born in New York City in 1931 and died in Minnesota in January 2001. Nabokov, Vladimir
The Olympia Press, Paris. First edition of Nabokov's masterpiece, published in Paris by the Olympia Press in 1955. First issue with the price of 900 francs on the rear panel of each volume. Octavo, 2 volumes, original green wrappers. In near fine condition with light rubbing, some toning to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example. "Brilliant One of the funniest and one of the saddest books that will be published this year" (New York Times). "Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind, for Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce. Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy" (Atlantic Monthly). The novel became the basis for the 1962 Stanley Kubrick film starring James Mason and Peter Sellers. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Isaac Asimov
Doubleday. Isaac Asimov (1955) 'End of Eternity', US first edition, first printing, published by Doubleday. Signed by Asimov on the title page. An exceptionally scarce signed first edition that only rarely comes up for sale. Condition: a good copy in a good dust jacket. There are no previous owners' scribbles inside, and this is NOT an ex library copy. There is rubbing to the board edges where the thin cloth has rubbed through to the card board, in particular at the bottom edges (see pictures). The lettering is vibrant on the spine. The dust jacket is first state showing the correct price of USD 2.95. It displays some tears and loss to the top and bottom spine as pictured. Overall a good copy only and there are certainly copie sin better condition on the market, but they are all unsigned. Extremely scarce signed and currently the only signed first edition on the market. 'The End of Eternity' was shortlisted for the 1956 Hugo Award and lost to Robert Heinlein's 'Double Star'. Asimov later tied the novel into the 'Foundation' universe. The book served as basis for numerous films including the most recent 'The Adjustment Bureau' (2011). First and Fine. [Lewis, Jerry] Head, Edith (costume designer) Tashlin, Frank
Paramount Pictures. Four original costume designs intended for Jerry Lewis' character in the 1955 film "Artists and Models," with holograph notations and illustrations painted by costume designer Edith Head. The illustrations largely feature simple shirt-and-pants combinations. One, a white t-shirt and nerdily rolled-up blue jeans, features a silk scarf belt next to which Head has emphatically written "NO!" A later film of the popular Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis duo, "Artists and Models" depicts comic book writer Martin stealing ideas his kooky roommate comes up with in his dreams, while the pair simultaneously attempt to woo their very attractive neighbors. Unarguably the most famous costume designer in the history of cinema, Edith Head was known for her work with director Alfred Hitchcock, and for extensively consulting with leading actresses, becoming highly sought after as a result. Head was nominated for thirty five Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, winning eight. She still holds the record for the largest number of Academy Awards won by any woman. 15 x 20 inches, pencil and gouache on illustration board. Near Fine, with the occasional toning, soil, or bumped corner. Hirschhorn, p. 349.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Book has been excellently preserved. Highly collectible copy. 1955 Parade of Pleasure Geoffrey Wagner Library Publishers HCDJ Fine Collectible This is the 1955 Library Publishers edition of Parade of Pleasure. The book was first released in 1954 by Derek Verschoyle in London. This copy has been excellently preserved. Original dust jacket is protected by a plastic dust jacket cover. Condition notes: Book structure is in fine condition. No corner bumping or edge wear. Some foxing to front and back flyleaves. Top of dust jacket spine is very lightly chipped. Book has been excellently preserved. Highly collectible copy. From the dust jacket front flap: The author of this book calls it "a study of popular iconography in the U.S.A., with special reference to movies, comic-books, pin-up magazines, television, radio, jazz and murder mystery stories." In his analysis of these forms of entertainment he is concerned with showing up certain disquieting trends in their content and direction. The overall tendency, he believes, is towards violence and sadism, and he points out that a very high proportion of the most popular kinds of entertainment is given up to themes of this nature. Within this general tendency emphasis is laid on certain types of behavior which seem to reflect deeper trends in American life. One of the most interesting sections of this surprising book is that devoted to American "comic" fiction. Mr. Wagner p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ian Fleming
Moonraker by Ian Fleming Jonathan Cape 1955 1st Edition / 1st Printing / Rare Shoo Variant Original Later DJ (Unclipped) First to see will surely buy !!! Here I have for sale a very rare and extremely sought after variant copy of Ian Fleming's 3rd book title 'Moonraker'. As you can see from the photos, this rare title is in simply stunning condition. The later original DJ (from a 6th Printing) is in 'Fine' condition, bright, unblemished and overall a striking example (ref. photos). This is a remarkable survivor of a dustjacket which is renowned for turning up in tatty, poor and tired condition. The 1st Edition / 1st Printing book is in 'Near Fine +' condition, with clean boards, bright silver lettering to the front board and spine. Internally, the front endpaper has a neat former owner inscription and a small 'bookbox Australia' sticker present (ref. photos). Else, the rear end paper is clean, as is the page block (ref. photos), the book is unread and clean throughout (no marks, tears, folded pages or brown spotting present). The copyright page shows 'First Published 1955' with no mention of any other printings (confirming it's First Printing Status). Considered to be the true '1st State' (proceeding those copies with 'Shoot' on Page 10) and printed on much thinner paper that other state copies. For anyone who is familiar with Fleming books, this 'Shoo' variant is an extremely rare book, especially scarce to find a copy in this condition. Overall a gorgeous copy of a book which seldom appears for sale in this condition, grab yourself a bargain. The book will be posted out v … [Click Below for Full Description]
