        SEPTEMBER 27 1955 - 5PM - Poster

75cm x 50cm. Framed poster consisting of ten rows of nine headshots, the photographs in the bottom rows are slightly larger than in other rows. There is one photograph left blank, in the bottom right; the Tibetan origin of the leader may have logistically prevented the receipt of his photograph in time for printing.Printed to commemorate the 27 September, 1955 ceremony held by the State Council to award the PLA's General Category military ranks. This poster lists the leaders newly named Lieutenant Generals. At the ceremony, Premier Zhou Enlai awarded certificates of appointment to the military ranks. This ceremony coincided with one taking place in Huairen Hall in Zhonnanhai when Mao Zedong personally handed certificates of appointment to the ten leaders in the Marshal Category. The formation of rankings were part of the reorganisation of the PLA taking place in the 1950s as they sought to advance from a peasant army to a modern military force. This included the formation of thirteen military regions and the system of military ranks, all approved by Mao Zedong. The assignment of military rankings in the style of the Soviet military was met with criticism from those who did not want to be aligned with the Soviet Union and who felt that the hierarchical rankings defied the egalitarian foundations of the PLA. Marshal Lin Biao was one of the system's detractors, criticising it as part of the "Soviet revisionist military structure". He abolished the rankings in 1966. -Li, Xiaobing, "A History of the Modern Chinese Army"

MOONRAKER

Cape 1955 - First edition. Original black cloth with silver embossed titles, in striking 'flames' dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "To Clare / Who washes my books behind the ears! / Ian 1955." A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper which shows the usual dulling to the spine but is crisp and clean. Clare was secretary to Fleming's friend the journalist, Joseph Kingsbury-Smith, national editor and chief foreign writer of Hearst Newspapers in New York, whom Fleming had met during the war. Clare was a fan Fleming's novels and received this presentation copy on one of Fleming's visits to New York. The third James Bond book, in which Fleming's narrative style, now well established, displays his own brand of polished suspense. Cape's confidence in Fleming is evident as well: 10,500 copies of the first edition were published. However the materials used for the dustwrapper (cheap, soft paper printed in orange and yellow, which fades, on a white background, which soils) means that well preserved copies are quite scarce and presentation copies even more so. Rare edition of a collection of letters on Islam and Arabic by the Louvain scholar Nicolaus Clenardus (1495-1542), "an outstanding humanist noted for his Arabic studies" (Dannenfeldt). In 1533 he joined Prince Henry of Portugal, archbishop of Braga, and established a humanist college in Braga, which he directed until 1538. With Henry's support, he travelled to Fez (Morocco) to obtain manuscripts and to deepen his knowledge of Arabic and Islam. He returned to Granada in 1541, where he died the next year; he was buried in the Alhambra. Today, his fame rests on the present learned and sparkling letters, containing his observations on the Quran, Arabic grammar and Islamic culture, with numerous quotations in Arabic. With contemporary owner's inscription on the back of the title-page, foliation added in manuscript, slightly browned and cut short. Accompanied by a laid-in Christmas card signed by Walter Lord to Mr. Whitney with a copy of a book review of this book that Whitney did for the newspapers.         Jews of South Carolina

1955. First Edition . Signed. ELZAS, Barnett A. The Jews of South Carolina. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1905. Thick octavo, contemporary full brown morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $2200.Limited first edition, number 2 of only 175 copies, of this authoritative Jewish American history by noted rabbi and historian Dr. Elzas, printed on hand-made paper and wonderfully illustrated with 11 plates (two double-page), inscribed by the author, “To Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, a slight token of great esteem, from Barnett A. Elzas, New York, November, 1934,” with an autograph letter signed by Elzas. When its author, respected rabbi and historian Dr. Barnett Elzas, began to serve Charleston’s Congregation Beth Elohim in 1894, “he became keenly interested in local Jewish history and made an exhaustive study of records of Charleston Jewry and of the older smaller communities of the state. After writing a number of studies on the subject, he produced the comprehensive Jews of South Carolina: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day (1905), which still ranks as one of the best historical studies of an American Jewish community” (Encyclopaedia Judaica). “As late as 1826, South Carolina probably contained a larger Jewish population than any other in the Union, and in no other state, relatively, have Jews been so active in public life during many decades as in South Carolina. Jews of South Carolina begins with a specific welcome to Jews and other dissenters, in John Locke’s famous Constitution (1669); and Dr. Elzas rightly emphasizes the fact that South Carolina was unique among the British colonies in never at any time imposing any civil or religious disability upon the Jew… He presents an interesting sketch of Francis Salvador… as also of Moses Lindo, and… has materially added to our knowledge of South Carolina Jewish history” (American Historical Association, 940-1). With frontispiece of a Charleston synagogue destroyed in an 1838 fire. Featuring eight full-page and two double-page illustrations, engraved title page vignette, engraved ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces. Elzas incorporated some material from his four, similarly titled 1903 pamphlets into this much larger, substantially new work. Howes E136. Turnbull, 488. Accompanied by an autograph letter, on Congregation Beth Miriam stationary, signed by the author. The letter reads in full: “42 West 72nd St. New York, Nov. 5, 1934. My dear Mrs. Warburg: I have been in serious trouble again. I contracted a severe cold at a funeral of one of the patients at Central Islip Hospital, which settled on my lungs and has kept me confined to the house for many days. This is the first time I have taken my pen in hand since my last letter to you. I hope that you will be gracious enough to accept the accompanying volume. It was my answer to the Anti-Semitic aristocrats of South Carolina and changed the entire attitude of that state towards the Jews. With expression of personal regards, Sincerely yours, Barnett A. Elzas.” Frieda Schiff (daughter of daughter of investment banker Jacob Schiff) married prominent New York financier, philanthropist and social reformer Felix Warburg in 1895. “An astute, generous and well-read woman… Frieda Warburg contributed sizable sums and held largely honorary positions in many, mostly Jewish, organizations in which her family had already set the pattern of involvement. During the last two decades of her life… nearly the full weight of the family’s philanthropic and communal responsibilities fell on her shoulders” (Jewish Women’s Archive).Scattered light foxing. Spine lightly rubbed, minor scuffing to boards. A near-fine inscribed copy with noteworthy provenance.
