        Inscribed Photograph

1955. unbound. Rare inscribed photograph (on the mount) in ball point pen, no date, circa 1955. This 10 x 8 photo -- a second-generation print of a 1906 image of a youthful Radtke riding De Mund at Gravesend Racetrack in Brooklyn, NY -- has been matted to 14 x 11 inches. Inscribed: "To my old pal "Slim" - from Herman Radtke." Further information listed on the mat indicates that this image was taken by acclaimed photographer J.C. Hemment and that it came from renowned collector J.M. Holmes -- an exceptional piece of racing history. Very good condition. One of the greatest and most successful race horse jockeys of the early to mid 1900s, whose career was continuously marred by controversy. When Paul J. Rainey, the American businessman, philanthropist, and playboy, purchased the race horse De Mund for $45,000 in 1906, he immediately spent an additional $25,000 so he could have a contract on jockey Herman Radtke. At the time, Radtke was an apprentice under contract to racing icon Jack B. Keen. A short time thereafter, he stunned the horse racing world by winning 16 races in a four-day period.

Washington, DC: Naval Research Laboratory, 1955. 263 x 202 mm. Original printed stiff wrappers, cloth backstrip, minor dampstain on front cover, ownership signature. Together 3 items. Very good to fine. <p></p>Extremely Rare Group of Materials Documenting the Record-Breaking Flight of the Viking 11 Rocket and the Spectacular High-Altitude Pictures of Earth Taken During the Flight. These materials include a carbon typescript of Baumann and Winkler&#146;s text (not including the &#147;Future Program&#148; and &#147;Acknowledgement&#148; sections at the end, which likely had not yet been written), the original photographic prints and diagrams used for their report, an early published version of the report illustrated with photographic prints, and a later version illustrated with halftones. Baumann and Winkler&#146;s report is extremely rare, with only one copy recorded in OCLC (Stanford University). <p></p>On May 24, 1954, the Naval Research Laboratory launched the Viking 11 rocket from White Sands, New Mexico. The rocket rose to 158.4 miles above the Earth&#151;an altitude record for a Western single-stage rocket up to that time&#151;and the camera mounted to the rocket recorded spectacular images of the Earth from the threshold of outer space. <p></p>"Viking 11 broke the photographic altitude record on May 7, 1954, when it carried a fifteen-pound K-24 aircraft camera to 158 miles. Two basic kinds of pictures were taken by that rocket as it climbed straight up and then started to tumble back down. Most showed the terrain below in splendid detail. One, taken at the top of the trajectory, clearly showed El Paso, Las Cruces, the Rio Grande, and three railroad lines, all spread out beneath cotton-puff clouds whose shadows dappled the desert floor. <p></p>"Others, taken obliquely, captured terrain and clouds extending all the way to a gently curved horizon more than a thousand miles away. Two of the pictures, fitted together as a composite, made a portrait of sixty degrees of horizon southeast of White Sands. It showed a 1,036-mile-long crescent at the end of 600,000 square miles of parched land and, beyond, a mottled blanket of languid white vapor covering the Gulf of Mexico. Above the horizon, out beyond Earth&#146;s marvelously crisp edge, there was the stark blackness of deep space" (Burrows, This New Ocean: The Story of the First Space Age, p. 135). <p></p>The rocket on which the camera was mounted was the eleventh in the series of twelve Viking rockets built and flown by the U. S. Navy between 1949 and 1955. The Viking rockets were the first large liquid-fueled rockets developed in the United States; they were intended to improve upon and replace the captured German V-2 rockets brought back to the U.S. after World War II. As far as we know, the Viking 11 was the first rocket to carry a camera since the V-2 rocket launched by the Navy from White Sands on March 7, 1947; that rocket reached an altitude of only 101 miles, and the pictures taken during that flight were not nearly as clear as those taken from the Viking 11. The Viking 12, which flew on February 4, 1955, also had a mounted camera; it reached an altitude of 143 miles.</p>

The Fluteplayer + Hand Typed and Signed Letter

Printed circa . 1955 - 8½'' x 5½'' 1 sheet folded poem printed in red and black; 'With all the good wishes of this Holiday Season Conrad & Mary Aiken' on front, with Aiken's 21-lined poem, 'The Fluteplayer' on the inside. On the rear cover is a 26 line hand typed letter to Bobby and Margaret Mackechnie, giving them a glimpse of his and his wife Mary's life, including the risk of being evicted from his Cape Cod farm house. It is typed with uncorrected typos. Conrad Aiken's residence 312 South Capitol Street, Washington 3 D C. Starts: 'Boxing Day - Dear Bobby and Margaret, Good to have your letter, and all the geographical newses, sounds like fine international fun - and delighted to hear Bobby is at work again. And yes, I think it would be a good thing to try the parties again, but alas, the mss [manuscript] is locked away goodness knows where in our Cape Cod attic, and will therefor [sic] be inaccessible till May or so, even if then we can find it! I'm orful [sic] sorry. And hope you can get someone to copy it at lowered rates. In Hastings? What's this about Lamb House, and how would we apply? No news here as to date of eviction or compensation, so we plan to stay on as long as poss.' etc. etc. and ends 'this is a little hand printed job done for us when we judged a potry [sic] reading contest last spring, Conrad'. For quick signature and typing machine verification you can look up the first photograph of a letter from the illustrations pages in his 1978 'Selected Letters of Conrad Aiken' by Joseph Killorin in a postcard to Edmund Wilson. Robert Mackechnie [Bobby] and Margaret Mackechnie [nee Barnard] English painter friends of Conrad Aiken. Until the second world war Aiken lived mostly at Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie's lived on the Rye side. By the way, Margaret Barnard's sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and 'ran' The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies. Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub. We currently hold in stock 15 other books by this author. AMERICAN LITERATURE

Memoirs: Year of Decisions and Memoirs: Years of Trial and Hope 1946-1952

New York: Doubleday & Company, 1955-56.. New York: Doubleday & Company, 1955-56. First editions. Octavo, two volumes. Original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page in both volumes, "Kindest Regards to James Loukas from Harry S. Truman 6-21-64." Both volumes are fine in very good dust jackets. Name stamp on the front endpaper of the recipient. Truman&#39;s Memoirs are an invaluable record of the former president&#39;s tumultuous years in office, his early days in Missouri, and his rise in local and state politics. There are delightful glimpses of his family life, striking appraisals and anecdotes of world leaders such as Churchill, Stalin, Chiang and De Gaulle, and candid disclosures about the background of national and international events. But overshadowing all is the story of the glorious task of bringing a war to an end, of working for an enduring peace and leading the free world into a new age" (Doubleday).

        Frog Went A-Courtin' *Signed

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, New York, U.S.A. 1955 - A beautiful, very early printing copy (probably second printing, almost certainly prior to the release of Over In the Meadow, released in 1957) of this 1956 Caldecott Medal winner, in what is probably a first-printing jacket. This copy is SIGNED by the illustrator, Feodor Rojankovsky, on the title page. There is no mention of this book winning the Caldecott on the copyright page or on the jacket flap, as in slightly later reprints. The jacket is probably from the first print run, as it matches a first in all respects, though it does have the award sticker on the front panel. It is also price-clipped, but by the time the price was raised, mention of the book winning the Caldecott would have been on the bottom of the front flap. The book has blue, paper-covered boards with a drawing of a frog imprinted in black on lower right corner of cover, title in black on spine (like a first printing). Illustrated endpapers, colorful lithographs. There is an attractive, vintage bookplate on inside cover; no other writing or marks. The pages are perfectly clean and bright. The jacket is clean and attractive, at least Very Good Plus, with a little chipping. Please see photos. Uncommon signed by illustrator. Lovely in itself, or combine jacket with a first printing book!         The Fluteplayer + Hand Typed and Signed Letter

Printed circa 1955. . Printed circa 1955. 8½&#39;&#39; x 5½&#39;&#39; 1 sheet folded poem printed in red and black; &#39;With all the good wishes of this Holiday Season Conrad & Mary Aiken&#39; on front, with Aiken&#39;s 21-lined poem, &#39;The Fluteplayer&#39; on the inside. On the rear cover is a 26 line hand typed letter to Bobby and Margaret Mackechnie, giving them a glimpse of his and his wife Mary&#39;s life, including the risk of being evicted from his Cape Cod farm house. It is typed with uncorrected typos. Conrad Aiken&#39;s residence 312 South Capitol Street, Washington 3 D C. Starts: &#39;Boxing Day - Dear Bobby and Margaret, Good to have your letter, and all the geographical newses, sounds like fine international fun - and delighted to hear Bobby is at work again. And yes, I think it would be a good thing to try the parties again, but alas, the mss [manuscript] is locked away goodness knows where in our Cape Cod attic, and will therefor [sic] be inaccessible till May or so, even if then we can find it! I&#39;m orful [sic] sorry. And hope you can get someone to copy it at lowered rates. In Hastings? What&#39;s this about Lamb House, and how would we apply? No news here as to date of eviction or compensation, so we plan to stay on as long as poss.&#39; etc. etc. and ends &#39;this is a little hand printed job done for us when we judged a potry [sic] reading contest last spring, Conrad&#39;. For quick signature and typing machine verification you can look up the first photograph of a letter from the illustrations pages in his 1978 &#39;Selected Letters of Conrad Aiken&#39; by Joseph Killorin in a postcard to Edmund Wilson. Robert Mackechnie [Bobby] and Margaret Mackechnie [nee Barnard] English painter friends of Conrad Aiken. Until the second world war Aiken lived mostly at Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie&#39;s lived on the Rye side. By the way, Margaret Barnard&#39;s sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and &#39;ran&#39; The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies.
