Freddy and the Baseball Team From Mars

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1955 - First edition. Illustrations by Kurt Wiese. A modest stain on the rear board else near fine in an attractive, very good or better dustwrapper with a small corresponding stain on the rear panel and a couple of tiny nicks at the crown. Inscribed by the author: "To John Orban with best wishes of Freddy and Walter R. Brooks." Our favorite title among the highly collectible series of books about Freddy, an intelligent pig-detective who is embroiled in the search for six missing Martians who are being forced to travel the country as a barnstorming baseball team. A significant highspot in porcine-detective literature, and exceptionally scarce signed. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

No date. A brochure from The Suffolk County Whaling Museum of Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY, printing the article "The Sag Harbor Whalers" by Clother Hathaway Vaughn. Signed by Steinbeck, who lived in Sag Harbor from 1955 until his death in 1968. A larger than usual Steinbeck signature, perhaps of the variety occasioned by someone asking for "an autograph" on a randomly available surface, as opposed to a more formal signing of one's work. 4" x 9" trifold brochure, now tipped to black cardstock. Fine. A nice memento connecting Steinbeck to his longtime, and last, home.

        Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath

Shroud Publishers 1955 - Written in 1927, Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath remained unpublished during Lovecraft's lifetime. It finally appeared in 1943, in the second Arkham House collection of his work, Beyond the Wall of Sleep. When Shroud produced this version in 1955, the book was printed from the text of a 4-part serialization that had appeared in The Arkham Sampler (according to Joshi I-A-31). The Shroud version comes in several different variants. This is the rarest. No. 492 of 1500 numbered copies, Currey state D1: A black cloth hardcover binding in a second state dust jacket, with the limitation notice pasted on bottom of the colophon page, stating this is one of 50 specially bound copies, signed in red ink by the publisher, Kenneth J. Krueger (see photo). Condition: Like many other copies of this book, the dustwrapper has become dry and fragile, especially along the spine. This wrapper has partially split on both the front and back hinges and clear tape has been applied to the inside of the wrapper. The black cloth covers are fine, except for what looks like a thin line of dust on the bottom edges. No bumping, the spine is square, and the gilt text is perfect. Fixed gray endpapers show a mild amount of toning around the perimeter, likely from bindery glue. The text pages are perfect. The first four sheets in the book exhibit some small, isolated areas of toning at the top outside and top edge. According to Joshi, many printed copies of this book were lost or destroyed when Krueger moved his publishing firm to California, thus its rarity. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original Film Poster: Raices: una pelicula de Manuel Barbachano Ponce - dirigida por Benito Alazraki

Offset Multicolor S.A., [Mexico] 1955 - Handsome photomontage poster advertising Benito Alazraki's 1954 film Raices (released in the United States with the title Roots). The film, now viewed as a landmark of Latin American filmmaking, was controversial for its realistic depiction of economic injustices against the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The acclaimed Spanish left-wing artist Josep Renau (1907-1982) was active in anti-Fascist propaganda campaigns during the Spanish Civil War; he was captured and briefly interned in the French concentration camp at Argeles-sur-Mer until his escape to Mexico in 1939. In Mexico he pursued a long and distinguished career as a muralist, painter, and political propagandist. Photomontage was always a central technique in his work; in 1966 he published his classic Fata Morgana USA: the American Way of Life, a book of photomontaged images highly critical of North American consumer culture. Renau relocated to East Germany in 1966, where he lived until his death. Original lithograph in colors, 94cm x 68.5cm (ca. 37" x 27"). Professionally mounted on archival linen. Slight toning to margins; old folds barely visible; still a bright, Near Fine copy, Condition A/A-.

The October Country [WITH TWO DUSTJACKETS]

Ballantine Books, New York 1955 - The first issue, with the publisher's logo stamped upside-down on the spine, a fine, fresh copy except for the barest shelfwear and dust soiling. WITH TWO DUSTJACKETS. One jacket is brilliant and entire, except for faint adhesive shadows at the spine heel and the back flap edge. Unfortunately a white portion of the front panel has become weakened due to water damage; the crumbling paper has been patched into place with some archival tape, and the overall appearance is of something resembling light soiling. Otherwise, the jacket is among the finest I've seen, the whites white and the reds red. A sympathetic restoration could bring it up to near new. The second jacket is formally the better one, but exhibits the more usual moderate soiling and rubbing, fading to the spine lettering, and a narrow water stain at the rear spine fold. All four flap corners are shallowly clipped, but the $3.50 price is intact. I hesitate to grade the damaged jacket; the other one is about very good. A more than complete package.         The October Country

Ballantine Books, New York 1955 - A collection of 14 stories from "Dark Carnival", all revised for this edition, and five more stories never before published in book form. Currey binding "B", red cloth lettered in black, Ballantine logo on spine is upside down, no priority established [binding "A" was used on 50 copies for Bradbury himself]. Book is well read, covers worn with fraying at tips and a little fraying along top and bottom edges of spine, hinges intact, small light stain on pp 250 and 251 with a little corresponding staining to the foredge only of the next 25 pp., and two very small lightened areas on front cover. DJ is edgeworn, spine faded but red lettering readable, open tear along bottom half of front flap edge with 1/8" wide loss of paper along the edge, 3/4" closed tear at top of front panel, 1/4" closed tear at top of spine, minute losses at corners, foxing along top of rear panel and both sides of rear flap fold. An unsophisticated book and DJ with no restoration. Pencil signature of Doris Gilbert Williams dated March 1956; this may be the Doris Gilbert who wrote for Science Fiction Theatre and other TCV shows in the 1950's, then much later married character actor Harry Lauter, then later became an artist of seascapes. Inscription in pen by Bradbury dated 6/11/1988 on title page. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

But I don't want to go to Brightlingsea. I want to go to Mars.

      c. 1955 - Sheet size: 235 × 233 mm. Pencilled at head as done for the News Chronicle, wanted 8.55 [August 1955]. Pen and ink on wove paper. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
