Our Miss Brooks (Original screenplay, producer David Weisbart's presentation copy)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1955. Final shooting script for the 1956 film, based on the radio and television series of the same name. Producer David Weisbart's bound presentation copy, including a staff and cast list with contact phone numbers and a page describing the central characters in detail. The film version of "Our Miss Brooks" capped several years of a very successful run with the same character, at first on the radio (1948-1955), then on television (1952-1955), with Eve Arden starring as the title character in nearly all its episodes. Arden's "Miss Brooks" is an English teacher at a midwest high school, an interestingly feminist character stuck in the mid-1950s, who remains steadfastly single but is still charming and with a barbed wit, placing the control of her classroom ahead of all things--though she does secretly pine for the biology teacher Mr. Boynton. Red sheepskin with raised bands, gilt design, titles, and rule. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Lewis and Quillan, dated 7/20/55 (script pages are all individually dated 7/20/55 as well). 104 leaves, mimeograph, Pages and binding Near Fine, with a few small, faint stains to the latter.

Eloise, Eloise in Paris, Eloise At Christmastime, Eloise In Moscow, Eloise Takes a Bawth.

Simon and Schuster, 1955-2002, New York - First editions of each of the five Eloise titles. Quarto, 5 volumes. Each are signed by the illustrator, Hilary Knight. Each are near fine in very good to near fine dust jackets. A brilliant set of this timeless classic. "I am Eloise. I am six", So begins the start of the famed first book by Kay Thompson's "Eloise". "At rehearsals of her act with the Williams Brothers, Thompson (who was a professional singer) prized punctuality. Then one day she was late. In a high, childish voice that she had never used before, she made her apology. One of her co-workers said, 'Who are you, little girl?' Thompson replied, 'I am Eloise. I am six.' The others joined in the game, each assuming a juvenile identity, and it became a regular rehearsal pastime" (New York Times). A book soon followed, three more were soon released.

Bogota: Ediciones- S.L.B., 1955. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. In near fine condition with only a few closed tears. Signed by the translator Gregory Rabassa on the half title page, with the opening sentence transcribed, "Nada en este mundo debe ser mas tremendo que los escombros de un hombre. Gregory Rabassa." Rabassa was the translator of La Hojaraca into English and Cien Anos de Soledad. Laid in is the original Bogota bookseller's bookmark. Garcia Marquez has been quoted as saying that prior to the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude none of his books had sold more than 700 copies. Despite the poor sales and even after the success of Cien Anos de Soledad, Garc?a M?rquez described La Hojarasca as the favorite of his own works because of its spontaneity and honesty. This present example was purchased upon publication and well-cared for. This is by far the nicest example we have seen. La Hojarosca was first published in Bogota, Columbia in 1955, later translated into English and published in 1972, as The Leaf Storm. Widely celebrated as the first appearance of Macondo, the fictitious village later celebrated in One Hundred Years of Solitude, La Hojarosca was a testing ground for many of the themes and characters later immortalized in One Hundred Years of Solitude. "Garcia Marquez has extraordinary strength and firmness of imagination and writes with the calmness of a man who knows exactly what wonders he can perform" (Alfred Kazin, New York Times Book Review).

The Colours of Memory [Presentation Copy]

NY: Grove Press. (1955). Poetry, issued in a lettered edition of 26 copies and a numbered edition of 250 copies: this is a presentation copy (designated as "s.c. 3 for Nancy"), signed by the author and, as with the lettered issue, with an original drawing by Irene Rice Pereira, the author's wife, signed by the artist as frontispiece. It can be assumed that the presentation copies ("s.c" -- "special copy"?) were even more limited than the lettered copies, as is almost always the case in the issuance of limited editions such as this. A fine copy in a professionally restored dust jacket. Laid in is an autograph holiday card addressed to Nancy and her partner and signed by Reavey for himself and Irene, with an image by Pereira from the collection of the Whitney Museum. A significant volume, with an original work of art by a distinguished American abstract artist: Pereira's work is in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, among many others. First Edition. Hardcover.

Important McCarthy-era Ronald Reagan document -- he had testified before Congress in 1947 about Communists in the film industry, now favors going on the offensive by refuting statements made by the Motion Picture Alliance against the Writers Guild "because of an anti-communist resolution that had been voted down"

[Hollywood, California], January 19, 1955. 8.5" x 11". "Typed Document Signed ""Ronald Reagan"" in dark pencil as Secretary and ""Lou Greenspan"" as Executive Secretary, [Hollywood, California], January 19, 1955, 8 pages, 8.5"" x 11"", separate sheets. Three rectangular binder holes at blank left margins. Fine condition.Headed ""Minutes of the Annual Membership Meeting of the Motion Picture Industry Council, held in the Board Room of the Association of Motion Pictures Producers on January 19, 1955"" In part, ""Ronald Reagan was re-elected as secretary ... Allen Rivkin brought up the fact that...the MPA [Motion Picture Alliance] had attacked the [Writer's] Guild in the trade papers because of an anti-communist resolution that had been voted down by the Guild's membership by three votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority ... He stated that nine of suspected communist members have left the guild and one will soon be leaving ... He read a resolution that he wished the MPIC to pass and to release to the press.""Art Arthur ... personally opposed Mr. Rivkin's resolution ... He felt sure that the next time the resolution came before the Writers? Guild, it would pass. He said he was sure there are still some unknown communists in the Guild --- writers who have eluded both the Guild and Management. He was afraid that just about the same time the MPIC released a statement to the press about their faith in the Writers, possibly next week something would be uncovered regarding the communists. If this should happen, all the prestige the MPIC has gained would be lost ... It was Arthur Freed's opinion that the MPIC should pass Mr. Rivkin's resolution to show that we believe in our brother members. Ronald Reagan was not in favor of Mr. Rivkin?s resolution as it was worded, but reminded the members that the MPIC was organized, in the first place, for this very reason.. He preferred that the resolution refute statements made by the MPA..."" At this MPIC meeting, Ronald Reagan represented the Screen Actors Guild, Arthur Freed represented the Screen Producers Guild, and Allen Rivkin and Art Arthur, as past MPIC presidents, were permanent delegates to the MPIC.In 1947, Ronald Reagan, as president of the Screen Actors Guild, testified in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) which had targeted the Hollywood film industry. Actors, writers, and producers alike were summoned to appear before the committee and provide names of colleagues who may have been members of the Communist Party. In the early 1950s, Wisconsin Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy investigated suspected communists in the U.S. government, military, and civilian society as chairman of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. On December 2, 1954,the U.S. Senate voted 65 to 22 to condemn Senator Joseph R. McCarthy for conduct unbecoming of a senator. The condemnation, was related to McCarthy?s controversial investigation of suspected communists in the U.S. government, military, and civilian society. A month later, in early January 1955, the Writers Guild was attacked by the Motion Picture Alliance ""because of an anti-communist resolution that had been voted down..."""

Giant (Original screenplay for the 1956 film, Bob Nichols' copy)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1955. Final draft script for the 1956 film. Copy belonging to actor Bob Nichols, who played the part of "Mort 'Pinky' Snythe," with his name on the front wrapper, and notations throughout, in holograph pencil. Based on Edna Ferber's 1952 novel. Bick Benedict (Hudson) and his wife Leslie (Taylor) are cattle ranchers in Texas, Leslie having been raised in Maryland and not used to the rancher's lifestyle. Bick's rival and former ranch hand, Jett (Dean), inherits a piece of land from Bick's late sister Luz (Baker), and strikes oil, all while taking a secret fancy with Leslie. Director Stevens captures the prewar era in its essence, reflecting on aristocracy, racism, and the oppression of women. The focus of the film is the nation's changing time with the coming of the oil industry, but a major subplot exists, documenting the racism and social segregation of Mexican immigrants employed by southern ranchers. Elizabeth Taylor's character eschewed feminism in its strongest role, asserting herself when men speak, and protesting the suppression of her own beliefs even though they differ from her spouses. James Dean was killed in an automobile accident just before the film was released, and it would be the last of his three starring roles, the others being "East of Eden" (1955) and "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955). Other notable appearances include Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Taylor, and Nick Adams, contributing to James Dean's dialogue postmortem. Set in Texas, shot there on location and in Arizona and Virginia. Winner of an Academy Award, nominated for nine others, including Best Picture. Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 53. Distribution page present, dated 4/4/55, with receipt removed. Title page present, undated, with credits for producer Stevens, writer Ferber, and screenwriters Guiol and Moffat. 185 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 178. Mimeograph on eye-rest green stock, dated 4/4/55 throughout. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good, bound internally with two gold brads. Front wrapper now encapsulated in mylar. National Film Registry.
