        The Ginger Man.

Olympia Press, Paris 1955 - First edition with Special Volume, Francs: 1.500 to rear panel. Small octavo, original green wrappers as issued. Signed by the author with the last words written of this novel, "God's mercy on the wild [The Ginger Man] J.P. Donleavy." Name stamp to the front free endpaper, otherwise a near fine example. The New York Times said "[t]here are a few novelists who are writing out of a sense of what the contemporary world is all about. The best of them is J. P. Donleavy," and the Scientific American called it "one of the books which reveals their quality from the first line. On every page there is that immediacy all good writing has." The Modern Library named The Ginger Man one of the 100 Best Novels of the Twentieth Century in 1998, and it has sold 45 million copies world-wide. Consequently, it has never been out of print, and it has been made into several theater and film adaptations. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Ortega, Imprenta-Litografia. Catalogo Muestrario de Carteles, Cartelitos, Cabeceras, Prospectos y Billetes de Propaganda Taurina, Ferias y Fiestas.

Valencia 1955 - Oblong 4to. 20 by 29 cm. 41 leaves in brown tinted illustrated wrappers. Splashily colorful trade catalogue from lithographic printer specializing in cards, tickets, programs and posters dedicated to bullfights and local fairs and fiestas. Much of the content is brilliantly illustrated promotions of bullfights, with flyers, posters and the like tipped in, generally two or three pasted onto the same base leaf. Samples which in practice might have been printed in varying sizes, often much larger than in the catalogue, they capture the thrill, ritual and spirit of the sport. The pages with tickets and some other items are less eye candy but no less useful documents of the material paraphernalia of the sport, and reminders too of the manifold commercial aspects of an entertainment business. Quite scarce, with the only several copies surfacing on OCLC from other years. Light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

6 Rue des Favorites, Paris. 15 October 1955.. One-half page, on quarto sheet of plain stationary. Folded for mailing, minute tear at top edge, otherwise about fine. To "Dear Miss Marx," just possibly Erica Marx, editor and proprietor of the Hand & Flower Press, by implication a probable response to a query about English rights for EN ATTENDANT GODOT. He writes in full: "Forgive my not having written to you before now. The delay was due to the unfinished state of my French publisher's negotiations with Faber and Faber for an English edition of Godot. These have now been successfully concluded and I signed the contract yesterday. With my thanks and regrets I am Yours sincerely ...." Signed in full in ink. The Faber edition appeared in February of the next year.

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1955-9. 4 volumes, quarto. Original paper covered pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, complete with dust jackets. All volumes are illustrated throughout the text by Hilary Knight. Overall a very good set with evenly toned spines, mild wear to extremities, "Eloise" with Twentieth Century Fox film research library stamp to the front pastedown, light spotting to panels, shallow chipping along edges, "Eloise in Paris" with light chipping along lower edges, spotting to panels, small chip to mid of spine, "Christmastime" with previous ownership to front endpaper. Doll in great condition with a little soiling mostly to hair, original box opened but with Eloise label still intact. First editions, first printings. Eloise in Paris with a lengthy inscription from Kay Thompson, "for my darling Fairfax with a little petite of everything thats choisie, because because because, you are! Love love love Kay and Moi Eloise xx" Eloise in Moscow signed by the illustrator on the title page. All four Eloise books with the original Eloise doll and her packaging. The doll, which made its appearance Thanksgiving of 1957, was a huge success, thanks in to part by Life Magazine and FAO Swartz picking up on it. Inventory of the first doll was gone before Christmas, leaving many wanting on Christmas morning. The doll was manufactured by Hol-Le Toys, there were two versions planned a 21 inch and 43 inch version, only the 21 inch was produced. At the time most dolls had plastic faces, however the lead designer of the Eloise doll felt it was important for her to be made from silk. Everything down to her hair was carefully and skilfully designed. On her debut she retailed for $6.00 and was produced in a factory of only 45 workers, who could not meet the demands.- Antique Doll Collector. A truly scarce item.

London: Ernest Benn Limited,, 1955. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Photographic portrait frontispiece, 3 similar plates, folding sketch map of Saudi Arabia to rear. Small portion of marking to upper inner corner of front board, light spotting to edges, endleaves and map. A very good copy in the slightly chipped and rubbed dust jacket. First edition, first impression of Philby's history of Saudi Arabia, this copy inscribed on the title page "For Ralph Izzard, with the best wishes of the author, HSJB Philby, 5/10/57". Izzard (1910-1992) was working as foreign correspondent for the Daily Mail when he was recruited to the Naval Intelligence Division by Ian Fleming. After the war he resumed his position at the Mail and remained there for three decades, during which time he is widely believed to have used his foreign postings as cover for further intelligence work. Posted to Beirut after a short stay in Egypt, he entered the circle of his old Cambridge friend Kim Philby, who was there working for MI6 under journalistic cover, while also passing information to the USSR. Kim arrived in Beirut in August 1956 after his exoneration by Macmillan, joining his father, Harry, who had been living in exile in the Lebanese village of Ajaltun since 1953 owing to his repeated criticism of of King Sa'ud, the successor to his great friend and idol, King 'Abd al-'Aziz. Harry died in Beirut in 1960 and Kim fled to Moscow three years later. A hugely evocative association copy, inscribed by Britain's chief antagonist in post-war Arabia to a famous spy, trained by Fleming himself, whose relation to her most infamous traitor remains unclear at best.

        THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY

New York:: Coward-McCann. (1955).. First edition. Her recurring character Tom Ripley, an amoral, sexually ambiguous con artist and occasional murderer is introduced in this first novel about him. It was filmed by René Clément as Plein Soleil (1960, aka Purple Noon and Blazing Sun) with Alain Delon, whom Highsmith praised as the ideal Ripley. The novel was adapted under its original title in the 1999 film directed by Anthony Minghella, starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett. Michael Dirda observed, "Europeans honored her as a psychological novelist, part of an existentialist tradition represented by her own favorite writers, in particular Dostoevsky, Conrad, Kafka, Gide, and Camus." Bookplate (under front flap) of Adrian Goldstone who was an avid book collector all of his life, he is particularly well know for his bibliographies of Arthur Machen and John Steinbeck. The book has a couple of minor abrasions on front end paper, otherwise fine with the barest cover wear, in a near fine, bright dust jacket with slightly faded spine and edges of back cover and other minor cover wear.. .
