Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak, and Otto Preminger on the set of "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955)

N.p.: N.p., 1955. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak in conference with director Otto Preminger on the set of "The Man with the Golden Arm" in the fall of 1955. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. SIGNED by Willoughby on the verso, along his ASMP rubber stamp for both New York and Ireland addresses. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 8.5 x 13.5 inches. Near Fine. Selby, p. 82.

Moonraker - Very Rare 1st w/High Grade original Dust Jacket

MacMillan 1955 - IAN FLEMING - MOONRAKER, published by MacMillan, copyright 1955, First Printing (states "First Printing" on copyright page with no references to subsequent printings - there was never a 2nd printing in this format), lists to "Live and Let Die" on list of Fleming books to left of title page, white endpapers with light green cloth boards and black lettering to spine and front board, $2.75 price on DJ front flap. VERY RARE BOOK - HARDER TO FIND THAN THE 1ST PRINTINGS OF BOTH LIVE AND LET DIE & CASINO ROYALE - EASILY THE RAREST OF ALL U.S. IAN FLEMING 1ST PRINTINGS. Book has flat pages with one creased page corner, very slight dust soiling/age darkening to page edges, no foxing to pages or endpapers or outer page edges, endpapers are clean and free from erasures/soiling, former owner's name to inside front board (covered by DJ front flap), top right corner of ffe has been clipped (either to remove a used bookstore price or remove a former owner's name), otherwise no former owner's markings or used bookseller stamps/stickers inside, no wear to board edges, corners or spine tips, no bumped board corners, NO scotch tape marks or 'black' edging mark (caused by those old style DJ protectors - common defect found with this book) to boards, no discoloration/soiling to boards, no wear to spine or front board lettering. Dust jacket has no tearing, chipping or creasing, almost no wear to spine tips, no wear to front flap crease, virtually no edge wear, no spine fading to spine lettering (either the green title or red publisher's name), very faint stain to left edge on rear panel otherwise no soiling or staining, no dust rubbing to white rear panel, no color tears/color rubbing, no scotch tape marks to flaps, faint foxing to edges of flaps. Overall a FINE-/N-FINE book in FINE- condition dust jacket (not price clipped) of an Ian Fleming U.S. 1st printing rare hardcover book. While the last 4 Ian Fleming James Bond books are very common in the U.S. trade printing state, all of the U.S. Fleming books before On Her Majesty's Secret Service are quite scarce as the U.S. print runs were very very small (in comparison to the U.K. print runs) as the "bond mania" craze had not really hit the U.S. until after the release of Dr. No in the movie theatres in late 1962. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Ian Fleming James Bond 1st printing hardcover appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Perfetta conservazione. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1616 Geneva Bible - Folio Last Issue Date

Hardcover. Good. This is the last Geneva Bible printed in England; produced five years after the first edition of the King James version, it brings to an end the printing of Puritan Bibles in that country and marks the close of the Geneva version's era of supremacy. This is a black-letter folio edition, illustrated with a handful of in-text woodcuts (including the Ark and its paraphernalia, and charts of consanguinity). The copy consists essentially of the Old Testament and some additional matter; it lacks two of the four preliminary leaves (including the title-page, publication information being provided by the colophon) and it also lacks the Apocrypha and New Testament. It begins with "Of the incomparable treasure of the holy Scriptures"; the "Briefe Table of the interpretation of the proper names which are chiefly found in the Olde Testament" and the "Table of the principall things that are conteined in the Bible, after the order of the Alphabet" are both present. Full later mottled calf, covers framed in double blind fillets and fleuron roll; spine with raised bands, blind-tooled compartment decorations, and gilt-stamped title and date; incomplete, with title-page, Apocrypha, and N.T. lacking. Binding rubbed/bumped at stress points, one compartment scuffed. Front free endpaper, first text page, and several others institutionally pressure-stamped; first page with rubber-stamped numeral in lower margin and early inked annotation regarding date of printing. Front free endpaper with affixed slips documenting gift donation in 1955, and with inked annotation regarding date; back pastedown showing traces of now-absent pocket. Tattering to first leaves not reaching text, and first one with recent repairs, second one with area of loss to upper outer portion affecting a border and ten lines of text, third one with central tear (touching woodcut map) repaired some time ago with tape, four leaves each with short tear from lower margin without loss, one leaf with lower outer corner torn away with partial loss of shouldernotes and image caption, final index leaf with hole affecting six lines. Expectable sorts of age-toning, dust-soiling, and light spotting/staining, only; lower outer corners of first quarter waterstained (often faintly). In sum a survivor; "breeches" in Genesis underlined in ink.

        Photograph inscribed

1955 - DOISNEAU, Robert. Photograph inscribed by Andre Dunoyer de Seconzac. Paris: Robert Doisneau, 1955. Original black-and-white photograph; image measures 7 by 8-1/2 inches. $1650.Original vintage photographic print by Robert Doisneau (with his studio stamp on verso) of French artist André Dunoyer de Segonzac at work in his studio. Inscribed on the verso by the painter: “26 Dec. 1955. 13 rue Bonaparte. Tous mes v?uxâ€"mon cher bonhommeâ€"pour Toi et le charmant rouge-gorgeâ€"Thérèse Dorny vous embrasseâ€"moi aussiâ€"Fraternellement. André Dunoyer de Segonzac.”The inscription, translated, reads: “All best wishes my dear good man for you and the charming robin. Thérèse Dorny [Segonzac’s wife] kisses youâ€"me tooâ€"Companionably, André Dunoyer de Segonzac.” Robert Doisneau specialized in images of the rich social fabric of Parisian life, and his photographs came to be seen as “the perfect embodiment of Gallic wit and romance” (New York Times). In 1967, Doisneau photographed Segonzac and his work for an exposition at the Chateau du Blois honoring Segonzac’s distinguished oeuvre. “After the fauves, after the heterodox cubist disciples of Cezanne, [Segonzac] knew the happiness of revealing a form of art completely new… He uncovered an infectious passion for the earth, in a joy of feeling you are its master, and the happiness of raising your head to the light” (Benezit 4, 26). At the time this letter was written, Thérèse Dorny was enjoying her greatest success as an actress, following the release of the film Diabolique earlier that year. With stamp of Doisneau’s studio on verso.Fine condition.

A View From the Bridge [From Under the Sea] (Original screenplay for the 1956 play, Van Heflin's copy)

New York: Kermit Bloomgarden, 1955. Draft script for the 1955 stage play, "A View from the Bridge," here under its working title "From Under the Sea," by Arthur Miller. Actor Van Heflin's copy, with his name, home address, and telephone number in holograph pencil and ink on the title page. Nominated for two Tony Awards. The play opened on September 29, 1955 at the Coronet Theatre in New York City and ran for a total of 149 performances on Broadway. Produced by Kermit Bloomgarden, Robert Whitehead and Roger L. Stevens, and directed by Martin Ritt, the opening night cast included Ralph Bell, Milton Carney, David Clarke, Russell Collins, Curt Conway, Richard Davalos, Ann Driscoll, Eileen Heckart, Van Heflin, Gloria Marlowe, J. Carrol Naish, Tom Pedi, Leo Penn, Antony Vorno, and Jack Warden. The play fell into a single act because Miller saw the characters purely in terms of their actions. He was primarily interested in the reasons for which a man "will endanger and risk and lose his very life." The ending was to be implicit at the beginning so that audiences would be held less by the suspense of an unfolding plot than by the unwinding of an inevitability. Set in Brooklyn, New York. Basis for the 1962 Sidney Lumet film, "Vu du pont," written for screen by Norman Rosten, and starring Raf Vallone, Jean Sorel, Maureen Stapleton, and Carol Lawrence. Plum wrappers with titles in silver. Title page present, dated February 28, 1955, with credit for playwright Miller. 84 leaves, mimeograph, with notations throughout. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound with two silver screw pins.
