Adam's Rib and other anomalous elements in the Hebrew Creation Myth. A new view by Robert Graves with wood engravings by James Metcalf.

Roy. London: Trianon Press for Faber and Faber, 1955. Roy. 8vo., (6), 74 pp; with 36 wood-engravings printed in bistre & 36 illustrations in line. Original red cloth, pictorial dust-wrapper & card slip-case. Dust-jacket stained along spine, otherwise a perfect copy with a flawless binding and text. The super de luxe edition, copy Z of 26 copies reserved for the author, illustrator & publishers, signed by author & artist (as well as 250 signed & numbered and 2000 standard copies). This was Patrick Macleod’s copy (he was director of the Trianon Press), inscribed to him by Arnold Fawcus the founder of the Trianon Press: “Françoise and Pat with love from Arnold”. The enormously prolific Graves (over 160 published books of poetry, prose, etc.) is best remembered perhaps for his writings on mythology such as The White Goddess; in Adam’s Rib Graves revises the creation myth in Genesis and demonstrates both versions here with the illustrations by Metcalf recreating the Canaanite icons captured by the Hebrews when they overran Hebron.

Ben-Gurion, believing that the â??current Proportional Voting System might disintegrate the nation even further, weaken and destabilize the national authority which started to grow upon the establishment of the State,â? proposes a new system which would guarantee â??a solid democratic government, political stability, social integration, unity of the people and the public and national responsibilityâ?¦â?

Haykira, Israel, April 2, 1955. 6.25" x 8.5". "Autograph Letter Signed â??D. Ben-Gurionâ? as Minister of Defense, in Hebrew, one page, 6.25â? x 8.5â?. Hakirya, Israel, April 2, 1955. To Knesset Member Zalman Suzayiv, Tel-Aviv. Two file holes in blank right margin. With English translation. Fine condition.Zalman Suzayiv (1911-1981) served on the Finance Committee in the Second and Third Knessets (1951-1959). He was Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry from 1953-1959. Suzayiv was a member of the Directorate of the General Zionists, second in Knesset members to Ben-Gurionâ??s Mapai party and part of its coalition government at the time of this letter. On June 29, 1955, Prime Minister Moshe Sharett resigned because of the refusal of the General Zionists to abstain during a vote on a motion of no-confidence in his government. He formed a new coalition government without the General Zionists. By November, Ben-Gurion had returned as Prime Minister. In full, â??The current Proportional Voting System might disintegrate the nation even further, weaken and stabilize the national authority which started to grow upon the establishment of the State. This system destroys the stability of the government and might lead to a national crisis, downgrade the status of the elected public figures and create an unnatural barrier between the elected and the voters. Only the Regional Elections System guarantees a solid democratic government, political stability, social integration, unity of the people and the public and national responsibility.â?â??In an attempt to stabilize the political system, Ben Gurion proposed a new electoral system that would replace direct proportional elections with regional. Mapai approved the plan at the end of 1954, but it failed to pass in the Knesset, as most parties feared it will benefit mostly Mapai, bringing them an easy majority of Knesset seats.â? --- from"

        The Recognitions.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1955. First Edition of the author's early masterpiece. Thick Octavo, original cloth. Lengthily inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Anthony Friedrich Tony- I hope one day you may find something in her of value William Gaddis 8 December 1974." Fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the foot of the crown of the spine. The book Jonathan Franzen dubbed the "ur-text of postwar fiction" and the "first great cultural critique, which, even if Heller and Pynchon hadn't read it while composing "Catch-22" and "V.," managed to anticipate the spirit of both"--"The Recognitions" is a masterwork about art and forgery, and the increasingly thin line between the counterfeit and the fake. Gaddis anticipates by almost half a century the crisis of reality that we currently face, where the real and the virtual are combining in alarming ways, and the sources of legitimacy and power are often obscure to us. The Recognitions, was named one of TIME magazine's 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005.

Fine condition. In full, ""Indeed the kind of pioneer to whom we were all accustomed to is no more, in any event not to a sufficient degree. Our quick action is not the result of any fundamental weakness, but on the other hand, it is the response to the needs of the times - the settlement of any immigrants who will take root in the soil of Israel and will establish flourishing villages. You, who are one of the great pioneers and are among the founders of the kibbutz concept, must believe and support the establishment of the Ta'anakh region, and when the call goes out from you, then the wonderful youth of the kibbutzim will also take on the task of establishing this region. In friendship…"" Noted at the conclusion ""Copy: Levi Eshkol. Finance Minister.""The Ta'anakh region was in Galilee near the Jordan frontier. From 1955-1956, six settlements were founded on 15,000 acres. Most of the immigrants came from North Africa. In 1905, Shlomo Lavi (1882-1963) participated in Founding Convention of “Ha’Poel Hatzair” and in the creation of “Ha’Shomer” self defense organization. Lavi originated the idea of the “Big Kibbutz” and was one of founders of Kibbutz Ain Harod in 1921. Born in Plonsk, Poland, four years before David Ben-Gurion, Lavi and his fellow townsman were members of the Zionist “Ezra” organization.         Waterfront (First Edition, inscribed to Judith Crist in 1955)

New York: Random House, 1955. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Schulberg on the front endpaper to his friend, film critic and academic Judith Crist: "For Judith Crist / Here's a little souvenir of those days on Foley Square / Sincerely / Budd Schulberg / Aug 12, 1955." The best Schulberg association of the 1950s we have encountered. Judith Crist was the first full-time female film critic for an American newspaper, the New York Herald Tribune, the founding film critic at New York magazine, and in her later years, well known as the film critic for TV Guide. She appeared in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" (1980), and authored several collections of essays on film and interviews with filmmakers. Though more a populist, she very much paved the way for Pauline Kael, as she refused to be influenced by any opinion but her own, and could be quite blunt in her assessments of films. Billy Wilder once said that asking her to review a film was like "asking the Boston Strangler for a neck massage," and Otto Preminger simply referred to her as "Judas Crist." "Waterfront" was written by Schulberg in the wake of his success as the screenwriter for "On the Waterfront" the year prior, something of a re-imagining of that film. Foley Square, referenced in the inscription, is the heart of the waterfront location in Hoboken where location shooting for "On the Waterfront" took place. Schulberg's presence on the set and his influence on the film's style was as unusual as it was formidable. When Crist and Schulberg met in 1954, he was in his 40s and Crist in her 30s, she only ten years into her tenure at The Herald Tribune. Near Fine in an about Very Good dust jacket, with the laminate lifting as often found and fading to the spine titling.
