The Road Not Taken

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1955 New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1955. First edition, third printing. Inscribed by Frost to English actor Denys Blakelock on front free endpaper in Bread Loaf, VT, dated 1856. Introduction and commentary by Louis Untermeyer, illustrations by John O'Hara Cosgrove II. Publisher's green cloth, stamped with Cosgrove's illustration to front board in white, lettered in white to spine, top edge stained green, in original unclipped dust jacket. A very good copy with some light sunning to top edge and a touch of wear to extremities, text block edges lightly toned, dust jacket with some wear and loss to corners and spine ends as well as sunning to spine. Overall, a pleasing copy. From the library of Pulitzer Prize winning author Kenneth Silverman. Actor Denys Blakelock was the author of Portrait of a Farjeon (1966), a memoir of Frost's friend and fellow poet, Eleanor Farjeon, who died in 1965. Frost inscribed this copy to Blakelock in Bread Loaf, Vermont, where the poet taught English at Middlebury College at the time. This collection of Frost's most famous and well-loved poems was compiled by Louis Untermeyer, who introduces the work with a brief biography of Frost. Throughout the volume, Untermeyer's sparse commentary adds to the context and meaning of Frost's poetry with brief statements and discussions of various pieces as they appear. Pieces selected for this work include the title poem, "The Road Not Taken," and other notable works such as "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening," and "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Chiefly a biographer, Professor Kenneth Silverman co-directed the American Civilization program at NYU, and won not only the Pulitzer but also the Bancroft Prize for his work The Life and Times of Cotton Mather. Other notable works of his include biographies of Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel F. B. Morse. A magician himself, he also profiled the life of Harry Houdini. . Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket.

(Memoiren)

Berlin, Wigankow, 1955. Erste (und einzige) Ausgabe. 192 Seiten mit Skizzen und Fotos. Illustr. Or.Karton. Sehr selten. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

        The Less Deceived.

Yorkshire: The Marvell Press, 1955 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, tips a little worn, front hinge starting; an excellent copy in the bright jacket with lightly toned spine, some loss to spine ends and middle of spine, with small tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression, in the first issue binding, presentation copy, inscribed by the poet to "Harry – remembering many happy meetings. Philip" on the front free endpaper, above the recipient's gift inscription "A parting present to Rawdon & Marguerite, hoping they'll come again soon! Harry, 29th September 1956". The recipient is most probably the critic and scholar H. A. Mason, whose name appears in the subscriber's list at the end of the book. Presentation copies of The Less Deceived, which contains some of Larkin's best poems including "Church Going", are extremely uncommon: this is the first such copy we have handled. With the relevant issue point for the first impression: the misprint "floor" for "sea" on p. 38, here with Larkin's holograph correction in blue ink. Bloomfield A6a.
