        Sweet Flypaper of Life

1955 - HUGHES, Langston and DECARAVA, Roy. The Sweet Flypaper of Life. (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955). Small octavo, original photographic and textual paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $1750.First edition of this landmark collaboration between Hughes and DeCarava, the preferred softcover edition, containing Hughes' lyrical text and 141 engaging photogravures by DeCarava.Guggenheim Award-winner Roy DeCarava is considered "the spiritual 'father' of much contemporary African American photography" (New York Times). Langston Hughes, already "acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCarava's images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). "An important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a pacy, cinematic style. It is also a book that had more impact in its cheaper paperback edition, since, radically, Hughes' text begins on the cover" (Parr & Badger II:242). "The book won two awards, received critical acclaim in The New York Times Book Review". sold out its first edition, and was reprinted many times. It is one of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published" (Roth, 138). Scarce preferred first softcover edition with text beginning on front wrapper, text block on page 3; published the same year as the first cloth edition. "First Printing" stated on copyright page. Open Book, 160. Two small bookseller inkstamps at rear.Only lightest toning to spine. A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Profiles in Courage

Harper and Brothers, New York 1955 - INSCRIBED "For Mathilda Westbrook Sinclair - / With the very best wishes / John F. Kennedy", Quality copy of one of the most important Presidential books of the 20th Century, certainly the only one to have won a Pulitzer Prize. 16mo 6" x 8.5" pp. [vi] xix 1- 266. Book has light fraying along edges including front right corner and slight split at top of spine and puncture hole mid-spine. Binding is very strong.despite being opened often to admire this historic signature. Dust Jacket, perhaps married, has only two small chips on front lower left, slight browning at upper half of spine and light wear at top and bottom of DJ spine. Becoming available less frequently, cornerstone of every authentic Presidential collection. "All us in the Senate meet endless examples of such conflicting pressures, which only reflect the inconsistencies inevitable in our complex economy. If we tell our constituents frankly that we can do nothing, they feel we are unsympathetic or inadequate. If we try and fail - usually meeting a counteraction from other Senators representing other interests - they say we are like all the rest of the politicians. All we can do is retreat into the Cloakroom and weep on the shoulder of a sympathetic colleague - or go home and snarl at our wives." (p 19).         Moonraker (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1955. - FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, BINDING B (Linson material). Publisher's black cloth, titled in silver, without jacket. This version is in the Linson cloth, which has a higher sheen and closer pattern/texture and is both described and illustrated on page 8 of the bibliography. Binding B also "appears to be fractionally shorter" (Gilbert, p.97). Such bindings seem to be less common in commerce. The text block features the correct spelling of 'shoot' on page 10. The edges are rather foxed and the flyleaves have some offset browning, but the cloth boards are close to fine with a minor lean but no bumping or marking. An uncommon and previously unrecorded variant, housed in a protective leather-spined clamshell box. A3a (1.3) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Viking Rocket Story.

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1955. Illustrated. Octavo. Original cloth backed boards. With the dust jacket and the original acetate jacket bearing the Viking Hall opening commemorative badge. Illustrated with photographic plates. An excellent copy, some very trivial rubbing and small closed tears to edges, the acetate jacket a little warped. First edition, first printing, Viking Hall commemoration presentation copy from the library of NASA administrator Dr Homer E. Newell Jr, signed by the author and head of the Viking Project, as well as by 12 other persons involved in the Viking project including J. Preston Layton, Lt. Comdr. W. Pat Murphy, W. Paul Smith and William G. Purdy, all of whom are frequently mentioned in this book. Newell himself is also mention on p.48. This copy also has the presentation plate to the front free endpaper reading "This book is presented with the compliments of the Martin Company of Baltimore, Maryland at the opening of Viking Hall. The Hayden Planetarium. New York... June 30 1955". The Viking Rocket story is an important book in the history of rocket science and the space race, and this is a very special association copy. Dr. Homer E. Newell Jr. (1915-1983) was a mathematics professor and author who became a powerful US government science administrator, rising eventually to the third in command of NASA. In the early 1960s he controlled or influenced virtually all non-military unmanned space missions for the free world. He played a significant role in the negotiations which led to the creation of NASA, chairing a committee of rocket and satellite experimenters that drafted a consensus plan for a national space establishment which was presented to Eisenhower's science advisor, and advising the Senate preparedness investigating subcommittee... When the legislation establishing NASA was passed in 1958, Newell was given credit by his peers, including Van Allen, who called him "The Spark Plug" for a strong space science element in NASA. Newell joined NASA in 1958 (the year this book was published), and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally associate administrator of NASA, the third ranking position, from 1967 until 1974 (and as such overseeing the Moon Landing.) (1967-1974). In 1965, Newell was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. He was also commemorated in the Goddard Space Flight Center's Homer E. Newell memorial library, and asteroid 2086 Newell. This copy comes with a folding illustrated poster "U.S. Rocket Boosters for Space Projects", with "Table of Rocket Boosters" data sheet to verso.

Published by Allen & Unwin in 1955. The book is in Near Fine condition. The cloth on the spine show a bit of fading where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from light fading as well as the colored areas. No previous owners names or any markings or writing noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked or soiled. The original 7th impression dustjacket is not price clipped, with the publishers original price of "9s, 6d. net" to the front and rear flaps. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbit, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on the UK 7th impression dustjacket. At about the same time they asked for the 8th impression dustjackets to be price clipped and reprinted with the new price of "12s. 6d. net" as well. It appears that there are numerous instances involving both the 7th and 8th printings, where some of the dustjackets were not repriced, and it also appears that some of these may have been placed on the incorrect impression of the books. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one of the very first and very few found with the original price of 9s 6., A bit of tanning to the interior flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, slight bit of soiling to the upper portion of the front panel. Some very light edgewear with minor color loss at the top of the spine and the tips of the flap folds. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 7th impression of 1955, and the original dustjacket is as mentioned correctly marked the 7th impression. Colors are bright and the white areas are only lightly soiled, with almost no darkening of the light areas on the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the green topstain lightly faded. A full dark green leather slipcase, featuring Tolkien's original Mountain and Dragon design to the front board, and his JRRT monogram to the rear in gilt. A beautiful copy, of a very early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.
