5 [Five] Branded Women [Jovanka and the Others] (Original screenplay for the 1960 film)

Paramount, Los Angeles - Final Draft script for the 1955 film. Actor Van Heflin's copy, with his name on the front wrapper and his holograph notations throughout. Based on the novel "Jovanka e le altre" by Urgo Pirro.Once branded himself by the House Un-American Activities Committee, award-winning director Martin Ritt focuses on the cruel branding of five women in this standard wartime drama. Some of his better-known films (The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Norma Rae) also deal with the question of social and ethical choices in the face of pressure. In this story, the savagery of the Yugoslav partisans as they fight off Nazi occupation forces is also vented on five women accused of Nazi sympathies because of their sexual association with one German officer. The women (played by Silvana Mangano, Vera Miles, Barbara Bel Geddes, Jeanne Moreau, and Carla Gravina) have their heads shaved in order to brand them as traitors. (Eleanor Mannikka, AllMovie)Filmed on location in Italy and Austria.Orange untitled wrappers, with the Dino De Laurentiis stamp and numerous notations. Title page present, noted as Final Draft, with credits for screenwriters Michael and Achilles, for screenwriter Pirro, and for director Ritt. 153 leaves, mimeograph, with notations throughout. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with two gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Head of Blake.

      c. 1955. Cast bronze sculpture approx 7 x 7 x 5 inches. Portrait sculpture of William Blake. “Based on the life mask taken in 1823 by James S. Deville a phrenologist, when Blake was in his sixty-sixth year, Baskin’s bronze portrait of 1955 is extremely faithful to the original, emphasizing, as the mask does, those peculiar bulging forms of the forehead, the unusually deep convexity of the eyelids, and the deep slash of the downward-curving mouth that probably led Blake to joke about his ‘active physiognomy.’ It is said to have been Blake’s jest that the shape of his forehead made him a republican - which in his time meant a revolutionary,” Irma B. Jaffe (The Sculpture of Leonard Baskin, 1980).

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in a worn Very Good dustwrapper. SIGNED by Margaret Sanger on the half-title page and dated 29 May 1956. Margaret Sanger, the originator of the phrase "birth control" and its best-known advocate, sought to create equality between the sexes by freeing women from what she saw as sexual servitude. She survived Federal indictments, a brief jail term, numerous lawsuits, and hundreds of street-corner rallies and raids on her clinics to live to see much of the world accept her view that family planning is a basic human right.

Demystifying biology: did life begin as a complex system? Complexity (2005), 11, 30-35.Lauterbur was born on 6 May 1929 in Sidney, Ohio, and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1951 from the Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, Ohio. From 1951 to 1963, with the exception of service in the US Army from 1954-55, he was a research associate at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lauterbur's 1962 PhD degree from the University of Pittsburgh was awarded for his independent NMR work at Mellon. In 1963, he joined the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. It was there that Lauterbur realised how nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals could be used to make a new kind of image. The NMR technique, which was developed in the 1930s and 40s, consists of measuring the radio signals emitted by an object in a magnetic field. Lauterbur's breakthrough idea was to vary the strength of the magnetic field from place to place, so that different parts of the object emitted radio waves of different frequencies. In this way, positional information could be encoded in the radio signal, and images could be constructed mathematically from the returned signals.Lauterbur's concept, which came to him in 1971 while eating dinner at a fast food restaurant, was initially (and incorrectly) thought by some to contradict a well-established law of optics - Abbe's resolution limit - which states that the least distance between two points that can be resolved is one-half of the wavelength of the signal. Lauterbur's MRI technique circumvents this limit in a particularly clever way, and can resolve objects separated by distances less than one-thousandth the wavelength of the radio signal. His first manuscript describing the new technique was initially rejected by the journal Nature, a decision Lauterbur contested and the journal wisely reversed.Lauterbur quickly applied his MRI method to biological organisms - he first used clams and green peppers - and showed that different types of tissues could readily be distinguished. His subsequent papers established the foundations of many imaging techniques and applications now in clinical use. Today, over 60 million MRI scans are performed each year worldwide. Along with computed X-ray tomography (CT scanning), it is the most important medical diagnostic advance of the twentieth century.Although best known for his MRI work, Lauterbur made significant contributions to the development of (non-imaging) NMR spectroscopy. He published the first silicon NMR spectra and pioneering work on phosphorus, fluorine, and tin NMR spectroscopy. He recorded the very first carbon-13 NMR spectra and wrote a landmark series of papers on this spectroscopic method, which today is widely used in chemistry and biochemistry. More than anyone, Lauterbur proved that heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy was a powerful method for the investigation of matter, research that continued after his move to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985. Lauterbur relished being a scientific maverick, and had indomitable curiosity and courage: in his seventies, despite a stroke that made walking difficult, he stopped working on MRI and devoted all his efforts to investigate how catalytic templating effects might have contributed to the chemical origin of life. He was witty and charming, forthright and modest in turn. He was a good colleague and a devoted family man, generously giving his time to help others. On the day he was informed of winning the Nobel prize, he insisted on keeping his regular afternoon appointment with his students. In addition to the Nobel prize, Lauterbur won numerous awards, including the US National Medal of Science, the US National Medal of Technology, and election to the US National Academy of Sciences and the U

Autograph letter signed, with inscribed photo

Autograph letter signed ("Henry Miller") to Mr. Musgrave, Big Sur, 31 July 1955. One page, 4to, in two color inks, inks somewhat toned, tipped to mount. Framed with a black-and-white photograph of Miller, inscribed. Miller sends Musgrave two watercolors -- "Village by the Sea," "Greek Boy -- ahd the silkscreen "Hindu Wedding." The photo shows Miller standing with a paintbrush in his hand, a watercolor and supplies on the table before him. He inscribes the reverse: "In living room at Partington Ridge 1954. Return to Henry Miller Big Sur California." The recipient is presumably Victor Musgrave, British poet, art dealer, and curator -- a pioneer as a champion of Art Brut who often bragged that he was the only dealer to not wear a tie.

Kay Thompson's Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown Ups Drawings by Hilary Knight - SIGNED BY THOMPSON AND KNIGHT

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955. First edition (9th printing). . Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare double signed copy of the author's first book. Slim quarto, 65 pp., original illustrated red cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpage facing the title, "For Paul- For Lord's Sake / Kay Thompson" and some years later, by the illustrator Hilary Knight, who adds in a darker black ink "and Hilary Knight / 2000." Chipping and wear to ends of spine, lower edge and corners, in the original dust jacket, worn with significant tears and losses to the spine and upper and lower front edges.  A very good copy of a classic title rarely found signed by both of the creators.Maurice Sendak called Eloise a "brazen, loose-limbed little monster" and anyone who has been introduced to the eccentric 6-year-old who spends her days at large in New York's Plaza Hotel pouring water down the mail chute and managing her self-imposed responsibilities can't help but be fascinated. "Eloise's birth was unexpected. At rehearsals of her act with the Williams Brothers, Thompson [who was a professional singer] prized punctuality. Then one day she was late. In a high, childish voice that she had never used before, she made her apology. One of her co-workers said, 'Who are you, little girl?' Thompson replied, 'I am Eloise. I am six.' The others joined in the game, each assuming a juvenile identity, and it became a regular rehearsal pastime" (New York Times). That pastime became a book, with three more to follow in Thompson's lifetime. "Eloise became an alternative persona for Kay Thompson, much as the dummy Charlie McCarthy was for Edgar Bergen? [allowing] Thompson to express contrarian thoughts and ideas. Eloise took form as a lonely and whimsical child who created her own world" (Marie Brenner).<br style=""><br style="">

        Lolita

Paris: The Olympia Press,, 1955. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green and white wrappers printed in black. Some rubbing to spine ends and edges of wrappers, small chip to fore-corner of vol. II, faint tape remains to free endpapers, otherwise internally fresh. An excellent set. First edition, first printing, second state wrappers, published three years before the American edition and four before the London edition. With the bookseller's hand-correction to the price on the rear covers, this is Juliar's "issue b", though it is in fact a state rather than an issue. Lolita was originally published with a printed price of 900 francs on the rear covers, but a sudden currency fluctuation at the time of publication meant that the books had to be re-priced to 1,200 francs. The publishers prepared gummed stickers with the new price and some bookshops took it upon themselves to re-price the volumes with rubber stamps or by hand, as here (the price correction has been lightly erased from the first volume).

        The October Country

New York: Ballantine. New York, Ballantine, 1955. First Edition. First Impression. A very good copy. The white of the jacket generally bright but with a few areas of rubbing, red to spine a little faded and a short closed tear to the top. Some bumping to the spine tips. Boards in decent shape with just a little bumping to the tips. Probably Currey's binding B (dull red cloth), state 2 (logo correct orientation on spine). Could be binding C (red cloth) though as it's hard to distinguish the cloth types. Either way, there's no priority established. This copy is signed by Bradbury to the title page, but also inscribed by Joe Mugnaini "to Charles \ Joe Mugnaini" - see image. Mugnaini's name has been underlined too, given the pen, probably by Bradbury. A nice copy and signed by both. Cover art / illustrations by Joe Mugnaini [5562, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good.
