        The Return of the King

George Allen & Unwin, London 1955 - First edition, first printing, with no additional printings indicated on the copyright page; same date on the title and copyright page. Near fine in a price-clipped dust jacket, with the clipped price being the only thing which keeps the jacket from being graded as near fine. No markings or inscriptions, no previous owner's name, nothing to distract from the exceptional condition of this copy. Map at rear in near fine condition as well. One of the best copies of this title we've seen in quite some time. Of the three volumes in the LOTR trilogy, anecdotal evidence has this title, the last in the series, as the scarcest. Just a beautiful copy, in collector's condition, and as such pretty uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Lolita.

Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. First edition of Nabokov's masterpiece, published in Paris by the Olympia Press in 1955. First issue with the price of 900 francs on the rear panel of each volume. Signed by Vladimir Nabokov on the front free endpaper of volume one. Octavo, 2 volumes, original green wrappers. In near fine condition with light wear to the extremities. Exceptionally rare signed. "Brilliant One of the funniest and one of the saddest books that will be published this year" (New York Times). "Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind. For Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farceLolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy" (Atlantic Monthly).

        Moonraker (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1955. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, BINDING B (Linson material). Publisher's black cloth, titled in silver, without jacket. This version is in the Linson cloth, which has a higher sheen and closer pattern/texture and is both described and illustrated on page 8 of the bibliography. Binding B also "appears to be fractionally shorter" (Gilbert, p.97). Such bindings seem to be less common in commerce. The text block features the correct spelling of 'shoot' on page 10. The edges are rather foxed and the flyleaves have some offset browning, but the cloth boards are close to fine with a minor lean but no bumping or marking. An uncommon and previously unrecorded variant, housed in a protective leather-spined clamshell box. A3a (1.3).

A grammar of the Arabic language, translated from the German of Caspari, and edited, with numerous additions and corrections, . vol. I[-II]. London, Edinburgh, Williams and Norgate (back of title-page: printed by Friedrich Nies (Karl Berend Lorck), Leipzig), 1859. 8vo. Set in roman, italic and Arabic type. Contemporary half mottled, tanned sheepskin.

      - J. Fück, Arabischen Studien in Europa (1955), pp. 205-209. First edition of what immediately became the standard English-language grammar of Arabic and one of the most important in any language, still frequently reprinted and remaining in general use. Although the title-page calls it a translation of Karl Paul Caspari's German edition, Wright's claims that he expanded and improved on his model are fully justified. His knowledge of languages extended far beyond Arabic, and his comparative linguistics in the present grammar are one of its remarkable features, offering comparisons not only with Hebrew, but also with Aramaic, Ge'ez and Phoenician, all Semitic languages. In spite of the depth of his scholarship and the grammar's 550-page length, Wright aimed it at beginners. With the stencilled owner's name Kjörbo-Smidth. In very good condition, with only occasional minor foxing and almost untrimmed. The binding is slightly scuffed and worn around the extremities, but still good. First edition of a standard Arabic grammar including comparisons with other Semitic languages.

        Body Snatchers, The [wraparound band]

London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1955 First Impression (no further printings noted), with the uncommon promotional wraparound band, "The Star Thriller of the Month." Small 8vo: 192pp. Publisher's scarlet cloth, spine lettered in black, dust jacket priced 10s/6d. Faint spotting to top edge, leaves toned at margins (as usual), touch of wear to edges of jacket, but a Fine, bright, unread copy. Anatomy of Wonder II-401. Horror Literature 4-116. Originally published in Colliers, in 1954. Finney's chilling classic, retitled Invasion of the Body Snatchers for its four film incarnations, takes place in the idyllic rural community of Mill Valley, which is invaded by seeds that have drifted to Earth from space. The seeds replace sleeping humans with perfect physical duplicates grown from plant-like pods, while their victims turn to dust. The author's second (and most important) book, originally serialized in Colliers. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works. N. B.         Lolita

Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important novels of the twentieth century. WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: From the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency who was instrumental in its publication. "Vladimir Nabokov is an artist of the first rank, a writer in the great tradition ... [and] Lolita is probably the best fiction to come out of this country (so to speak) since Faulkner's burst in the thirties. He may be the most important writer now going in this country. He is already, God help him, a classic" (Critic Conrad Brenner, in 1958).Controversial since its conception, Lolita was rejected by American publishing houses until finally accepted by the avant-garde Olympia Press in Paris and published in a fragile two-volume format.First issue, with 900 Francs on rear wrappers and no evidence of later price sticker.WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: with stamp of the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency, on front free endpaper of each volume.Nabokov on the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin and the publication of Lolita:"Lolita was finished at the beginning of 1954, in Ithaca, New York. My first attempts to have it published in the US proved disheartening and irritating. On August 6 of that year, from Taos, New Mexico, I wrote to Madame Ergaz, of the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Paris, about my troubles. She had arranged the publication in French of some of my Russian and English books; I now asked her to find somebody in Europe who would publish Lolita in the original English. She replied that she thought she could arrange it. A month later, however, upon my return to Ithaca (where I taught Russian Literature at Cornell) I wrote to her saying I had changed my mind. New hopes had arisen for publication in America. They petered out, and next spring I got in touch with Madame Ergaz again, writing her (Feb. 16) that Sylvia Beach 'might perhaps be interested if she still publishes.' This was not followed up. By April 17 Madame Ergaz had received my transcript. On April 26, 1955, a fatidic date, she said she had found a possible publisher. On May 13 she named that person. It was thus that Maurice Girodias, [founder of The Olympia Press], entered my files..." (Nabokov in Strong Opinions).Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. Octavo, original green paper wrappers; custom box. Two volumes. A little edgewear and a few spots of soiling, usual spine creases. An excellent copy with an important provenance of the rare first issue. Very Good.

Just about Fine, square, tight and unmarked (front hinge seamlessly repaired), but end papers stained from binder's glue and title page inscribed; in a Fine, bright jacket, only very lightly rubbed. St. James Guide to Crime & Mystery Writers, p. 899. Scarce.Fine- "Nowadays the credit (or more often the blame) for the 'Yellow Peril' school of mystery thriller is placed squarely upon the shoulders of Sax Rhomer. Rhomer had the talent and good fortune to create a near-mythic figure [who first appeared in "The Zayat Kiss," published in the October 1912 issue of The Story-Teller magazine] who embodied all the fancied villainy of the East combined with all the science of the West: . . . Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate . . . [With his late] series of five novels about Sumuru, Rohmer revived the Fu Manchu formula, but featured a "carefully de-ethnicized female villain."         The Maser - New Type of Microwave Amplifier, Freguency Standard, and Spectrometer

Original blue/green printed wrappers. 7 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. Previous owner name inked on upper right hand corner of front wrapper. Several scuffs and minor discolorations to the front panel. The paper by Townes, et al. discussing the discovery of the Maser is found on pages 1264-1274. Offered in the original wrappers. This work resulted in the Nobel Prize in Physics 1964 being awarded to Charles Hard Townes (1/2), and the other half jointly to Nicolay Gennadiyevich Basov (1/4) and Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov (1/4) "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle". "The first papers about the maser were published ... as a result of investigations carried out simultaneously and independently by Townes and co-workers at Columbia University in New York and by Basov and Prochorov at the Lebedev Institute in Moscow. In the following years there were designed a number of masers of widely different types, and many people made important contributions to this development. In the type that is now being mostly used the maser effect is obtained by means of the ions of certain metals imbedded in a suitable crystal. These masers work as extremely sensitive receivers for short radiowaves. They are of great importance in radio astronomy and are being used in space research for recording the radio signals from satellites." (Nobel Presentation Speech) The Physical Review, The First Hundred Years, a Selection fo Seminal Papers and Commentaries, p.1165.

        Moonraker.

London: Jonathan Cape. 1955. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.256. This is the scarce variant on the thin paper stock with 'shoo' for 'shoot' printed to p.10. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, titled in silver, in 'flame' design dust-wrapper by Kenneth Lewis. The paper stock is toned as expected (this state 'prone to browning' - Gilbert p.95), otherwise contents and binding are near fine, with a small bump to the upper corner. The dust-jacket is a little edgeworn else near fine, exhibiting the usual condition issues inherent with this title; 'the panels are prone to browning and the bright colours suffer from fading' (p.96). A pleasing copy of a rare variant. The 'shoo' version accounts for "as few as one in five copies of the first impression". A true Bond highlight. Gilbert A3a (1.1).
