Kerouac, Jack
Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1950. First edition of Kerouac's first book. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Jacket design by Leo Manso. Jack Kerouac began writing The Town and the City in late 1945, according to Ellis Amburn, who edited Kerouac's last two novels and wrote the biography Subterranean Kerouac. Heavily influenced by Thomas Wolfe, he sent the completed manuscript to Wolfe's publisher, Charles Scribner's Sons, in 1948. Allen Ginsberg lobbied his former teacher at Columbia University (Kerouac had also attended Columbia), Mark Van Doren for help, and Van Doren set up an interview with Alfred Kazin, who worked as a scout for Harcourt Brace. Kerouac was unable to make the interview with Kazin but Ginsberg introduced Kerouac to New Yorker editor Ed Stringham, who arranged a meeting between Kerouac and the editor-in-chief of Viking Press. Kazin eventually decided to read the manuscript and if he liked it, he would pass it to the top publishers in New York. His contacts also included Houghton Mifflin, Alfred A. Knopf, Little Brown and Company, and Random House. Kazin recommended the book. In December 1948, Scribner's again rejected the manuscript, despite changes that Kerouac had made to the text. Little Brown also rejected the book that same month, declining publication due to its excessive length, which meant the book would be prohibitively expensive for a first novel. (Most of the costs of publishing a first novel are the costs of paper and binding, and a long book makes it harder … [Click Below for Full Description]

Russell, Bertrand and Alfred North Whitehead
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1950. Probably named after Isaac Newton's great work, "Principia Mathematica was Whitehead and Russell s detailed account of their logicist thesis that mathematics could be derived solely from logical concepts and by logical methods [it] has had an influence, direct and indirect, of near Newtonian proportions upon the spheres of its chief influence: mathematical logic, set theory, the foundations of mathematics, linguistic analysis and analytical philosophy" (Grattan-Guinness, p. 89). "Whether they know it or not, all modern logicians are the heirs of Whitehead and Russell" (Palgrave, p. 20). [Attributes: First Edition]

Kerouac, Jack
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1950. First edition of Kerouac's first book. Octavo, original red cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to "one of jazz's finest clarinetists" Artie Shaw, "To Artie - in fond remembrance of our long talk, and that 'sound in the night' all of us hear even though it is only the poor machine that takes it to us, from you - Yours Jack Kerouac And Thanks for the advice." The recipient, Artie Shaw was an influential American clarinetist, composer, actor, and writer. He led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s, had numerous hit records, and recorded with a number of small jazz groups drawn from within the ranks of the various big bands he led. He became best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" which became one of the era's defining recordings. Kerouac's spontaneous literary method borrowed heavily from the structure of improvisational jazz licks. His style came to be characterized by limited revision and short phrases occurring between dashes (as opposed to periods) which took on a certain rhythm much like the rapid tempo of Bebop jazz, a subject Kerouac enjoyed describing in many of his works. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Jacket design by Leo Manso. An exceptional association. Jack Kerouac began writing The Town and the City in late 1945, according to Ellis Amburn, who edited Kerouac's last two novels and wrote the biography Subterranean Kerouac. Very good. Unique author's collotype book with traces of editing, made by collotype (1950-ies): Author: Igor Gouzenko Title: «The Fall of a Titan» Language: Russian Weight: 3,5 kg «The Fall of a Titan» was translated into dozens of languages and even nominated for a Nobel prize. However, this book was never published in Russian. We offer you a author's collotype book with traces of editing (1950-ies). Please note: 1. This handwriting is by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. 2. The book is manufactured using the COLLOTYPE PRINTING. It is NOT directly from his pen. It is a collotype printing of what he submitted to the publisher. Part of the book is printed in black. Part of the book is printed in blue. 3. The collotype copy contains many handwriting notes on the text by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. So Igor Guzenko himself a lot edited this copy. Igor Sergeyevich Gouzenko was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. He defected on September 5, 1945, with 109 documents on Soviet espionage activities in the West. This forced Prime Minister Mackenzie King to call a Royal Commission to investigate espionage in Canada. The New York Times described Gouzenko's actions as having «awakened the people of North America to the magnitude and the danger of Soviet espionage». Igor Gouzenko - the man who started the Cold War, the cryptographer, who gave to Canada 109 secret documents: codes and data of Soviet agents. These materials led to the arrest and conviction of at least ten agents. Soviet historians take for the beginning of the cold war Winston Church … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Casals, Pablo] Helene Jeanbrau (photographer)
N.p. Vintage borderless double weight photograph, circa the late 1950s, depicting world renowned Spanish cellist and composer Pablo Casals playing the cello, while his wife Marta looks on in the background. Rubber stamps for photographer Helene Jeanbrau, the Dalmas Photography Agency, and the International Magazine Service, with light holograph notations in pencil and blue pencil on the verso. A musical virtuoso, Casals was playing solo cello recitals by age fourteen, having learned piano, violin, and flute by the age of four. A fervent critic of Frederico Franco's dictatorial Spanish regime, he vowed to not return to his homeland until democracy had been restored. Tragically, this would not occur until two years after his death at age 96. 6.75 x 9 inches (17 x 23 cm), housed in a 15.75 x 19.75 inch white mat. Near Fine condition.
