This is copy number 1172 of 1200 signed by Matisse in pencil on colophon.100 colourful crayon and pencil lithographs on loose pages, printed on thick Velin d'Arches paper at the Mourlot workshop in Paris. Illustrated frontis of medieval poet Charles, Duke of Orleans [1394-1465], who, taken prisoner after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many of his poems were written during his long captivity over a 25 year period. He wrote courtly and romantic poems set in ballad and rondeau forms. Rouveyre, in turn, had encouraged Matisse to produce a livre de artist. "In a letter dated 3 February 1943, Rouveyre raised the idea of an artist's book comprising Charles's poems, but written solely in Matisse's hand." [Brown K. CAZDEN, Norman 1914-1980
Born to Yiddish-speaking Russian immigrant parents, Cazden studied at Juilliard, City College, and later at Harvard under Aaron Copland and Walter Piston. He composed for dance companies and also performed as a concert pianist. "Cazden also taught at the Peabody Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and since 1950 at the University of Illinois in Springfield. After being investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee, he lost this position in 1953 and received no academic position for the next 16 years. He gave private piano lessons during this time and worked on research on folk music. Beginning in 1969 he taught at the University of Maine." Wikipedia. "Among... [his] works in the folk vein, the most distinctive is Stony Hollow for orchestra, Op. 47. It is like a montage of the music at a square dance. One of its features is the treatment of the trumpet as the voice of the caller... Sometimes the calls are announced in a regular patter, elsewhere merely as interjections or as addenda to a phrase. The country fiddler is audible as is also the concertina-accordion player with his in-and-out tonic and dominant harmony (measures 146-151). The sudden shifts of tonality and meter (measures 93-94) within the framework of the basic beat, the varied themes unified with the main motif, the skillful combining of themes (measures 152-160) where six independent melodic lines occur simultaneously including Yankee Doodle in the bass - all these make Stony Hollow an outstanding work deserving a place in regular orchestra repertoire." TURING, Alan Mathison.
Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1950. First edition. First edition of Turing's last paper in pure mathematics, a return to his great work 'On computable numbers' in which he had proved that the halting problem - the problem of deciding whether a given Turing machine ever reaches the halting state when provided with a given tape - was undecidable. "Following Turing's 1936 discovery of the halting problem and how to derive incompleteness from it in On computable numbers, a great deal of work was done by many mathematicians finding 'natural' versions of the halting problem in many traditional areas of mathematics.... Turing's word problem paper is a complicated piece of such work that was carried out by Turing himself; obviously he wanted to reassure himself that the halting problem was ubiquitous in real mathematics, which is the current consensus" (Chaitlin, p. 343). After the war Turing worked at the National Physical Laboratory before moving in 1948 to Max Newman's Computing Laboratory at Manchester University. A discussion with his colleague Peter Hilton in the Mathematics Department there in 1949 "touched upon subjects in Alan's remoter past, the two fields of group theory and mathematical logic which had set his professional career in motion. "The discussion concerned the 'word problem' for groups. This was like the Hilbert Entscheidungsproblem that Computable numbers had settled, but instead of asking for a 'definite method' for deciding whether or not a given theorem was provable, it asked for a definite method for determining whether or not some given product … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd, 1950. First edition. Original wrappers; custom box. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Alan Turing's landmark explanation of what would become known as the "Turing test" to determine whether a machine can 'think'. In "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," "Turing sidestepped the debate about exactly how to define thinking by means of a very practical, albeit subjective, test: if a computer acts, reacts, and interacts like a sentient being, then call it sentient. To avoid prejudicial rejection of evidence of machine intelligence, Turing suggested the 'imitation game,' now known as the Turing test: a remote human interrogator, within a fixed time frame, must distinguish between a computer and a human subject based on their replies to various questions posed by the interrogator. By means of a series of such tests, a computer's success at 'thinking' can be measured by its probability of being misidentified as the human subject. Turing predicted that by the year 2000 a computer 'would be able to play the imitation game so well that an average interrogator will not have more than a 70-percent chance of making the right identification (machine or human) after five minutes of questioning.' No computer has come close to this standard" (Britannica). Along with Turing's own 1936 paper "On Computable Numbers," "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" is regarded as one of the foundational works on artificial intelligence. In MIND, A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy, Vol. 59, No. 236, October, 1950, pp. 433-460. Somervell, T. Howard
Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1950. Original tan cloth with black lettering spine. This book is SIGNED by T. Howard Somervell on the title page and also signed by his wife, Margaret Somervell, on the dedication page under the printed dedication to her. She is mentioned frequently in the book. This is the compact version of the book with complete text but it has no photos and is much smaller in format than the first edition of 1936. Author's personal accounts of the British 1922 & 1924 attempts on Everest & autobiographical notes mostly related to his medical work & travels in India following the 1924 climb. On the 1922 expedition Somervell, Mallory and Norton became the first people ever to climb above 8000 meters under their own power (several balloon guys had gone higher, some dying). They reached about 8200 meters on Everest without supplemental oxygen. He joined the 1924 expedition, climbing to 28,000 feet, but was plagued this time with throat problems from the dry air. Somervell was one of the strongest & smartest of all the early Everest climbers. About half the book is on Somervell's Everest experiences. The book measures 179mm tall x 110mm, and has 319 pages, 2 sketches, 2 maps, bibliography, index. CONDIION: THe book is in nice condition with minor corner bumping at tips, clean but very faint soiling lower rear near the outside corner, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages (other than Somervell signatures), tight binding, no foxing. The dust jacket has loss at the spine ends with tan paper repairs in the backside, general light soiling. PHOTOS ARE OF THE A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Crime]. "The Inmates." ISHERWOOD, Christopher (Preface)
Retort Press, Bearsville, NY, 1950. 8vo. Stiff printed pictorial wraps in original dustjacket. One of 2000 copies, "entirely hand-set, hand-bound, and printed on a footpedal press by the editors." Jacket lightly rubbed with some chipping, esp. to lower spine. Faint staining. Unclipped. Mild wear to yapp edge of book. Very good overall. INSCRIBED in pencil by contributor James Peck to verso of front endpaper: "Mildred - You said you wanted to read what I wrote about the jig. Well, here is some of it and some of what others wrote. It gives you the feel of jailhouse [sic]. I think the book will interest you. I think they did a groovy job on the cover. -Jim." Noted, but slightly misleadingly-titled "anthology of the Prison Writings of Conscientious Objectors to World War II" (front flap), inscribed by one of its contributors, legendary activist and pacifist James Peck. Peck devoted himself to nonviolent resistance and in addition to serving three years at Danbury for refusing to serve during the war, he fought for decades for labor, peace, and civil rights, and was arrested dozens of times during his life. Indeed, he was a prominent figure in the 1970s prison reform movement in no small measure because of his numerous incarcerations, whose earliest experiences are detailed here. Includes a lengthy jacket blurb by Aldous Huxley [Bromer B75] as well as striking illustrations by Lowell Naeve. While the book is not terribly uncommon, it is complete and in collectible condition. And scarce when inscribed by a contributor. An interesting inscription, even almost certainly a later one … [Click Below for Full Description]
