Patrick Leigh Fermor
1950. Book Title: The Traveller's Tree Author: Patrick Leigh Fermor Edition: 1st Publisher: John Murray Year: 1950 Details: First edition and first print published by John Murray in 1950. This copy is signed and doodled by Patrick Leigh Fermor on the front free end paper. The author has drawn an elaborate doodle of The Traveller's Tree and then inscribed inside the sketch 'Anthony and Tania from Paddy' and then dated it. This copy belonged to noted bibliophile, bookbinder and author Anthony Hobson and his bookplate is on the inside board. The book is in near fine condition with bright boards and clean pages. The wrapper is very good with a chip to the front panel top right and also to the top right of the back panel. There is also wear to the corners and edges of the wrapper that is not price clipped. Overall a very good + copy. In this, his first book, Patrick Leigh Fermor recounts his tales of a personal odyssey across the Caribbean. He made his way through the long island chain of the West Indies by steamer, aeroplane and sailing ship, noting in his records of the voyage the minute details of daily life, of the natural surroundings and of the idiosyncratic and distinct civilisations he encountered amongst the Caribbean Islands. A few years after The Traveller's Tree was published, Ian Fleming's Live and Let Die, came out. In Live and Let Die, the book is recommended to James Bond by M, who says: 'It's by a chap who knows what he's talking about,' he said, 'and don't forget that he was writing about what was happening in Haiti in 1950. This isn't medieval black-magic stuf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bradbury, Ray
Garden City: Doubleday & Co., 1950. First edition of Bradbury's magnum opus. The Martian Chronicles consists of a string of episodes originally published separately. All of them relate to the colonization and exploration of Mars and result in a compelling narrative. Bradbury's mixture of science fiction and fantasy is first shown in book form in The Martian Chronicles. A fine copy with the inevitable sunning to the spine and edges of the boards, and slight bowing to lower board. In a near fine dust wrapper that shows hints of wear at the extremities. A cornerstone in any serious collection of science fiction. (Barron 3-32; Pringle 3).

LEWIS, C. S.
London: Geoffrey Bles [and] The Bodley Head, 1950-56. London: Geoffrey Bles [and] The Bodley Head,, 1950-56. The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle. 7 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in full dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a dark blue leather entry slipcase. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. A fine set. First editions, first impressions. A complete set of the much acclaimed Narnia series. "The immediate inspiration for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy... The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning... As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author".

1950. A stellar archive of apparently unrecorded ephemeral publications and original photographs contemporarily made by members of the Turkish Brigade, the special force that bravely fought alongside the U.S. Army during the Korean War. This is an archive of stellar quality concerning the Turkish Brigade, the special infantry force that joined the United Nations Coalition (led by the United States) during the Korean War (1950-3). The exploits of the Turkish Brigade represented the first major international military operation engaged by Turkey since the end of that nation’s war of independence in 1923. The Brigade fought with great distinction, and its contribution was aptly summed up by A.K. Starbuck: "The Turks acquitted themselves in a brave and noble fashion in some of the worst conditions experienced in the Korean War. Very little else could have been required or expected of them. Their heavy casualties speak of their honor and commitment. Their bravery requires no embellishment. It stands on its own." Due to the achievements of the Brigade in Korea, Turkey won global respect as a military power and full membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The present archive consists of six parts. First, are four issues of Savas Dönüsü [Return to War], a seemingly unrecorded magazine produced in 1951 by Turkish Brigade members as they sailed aboard a ship on their way from Turkey to Korea. Second, is Korea ve Harp [Korea and the War], an apparently unrecorded history of the war mimeographed in Korea by Turkish troops in 1954, illustrated with eight maps. Third, … [Click Below for Full Description]

PONTING Herbert
131 silver gelatin contact prints measuring 90 by 125mm, pencil ?A? numbers on verso. London, c. An unusual selection of the images taken by official photographer Herbert Ponting on the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913. This collection speaks of the commercial concerns of the expedition's photographic record, including a breadth of scenes from expedition life as well as much of the natural history of Antarctica, featuring a good number of Adelie and emperor penguin pictures (often with Ponting in frame), as well as whales and seals. There are two candid shots of Captain Scott on the deck of the Terra Nova, taken when it was stuck in the ice in December of 1910, alongside another particularly intimate moment from the same period of the crew at ease, sunbathing and reading, lying in a heap. When he was employed by Scott, Herbert Ponting was already considered to be the greatest outdoor cameraman in the world, so it's no surprise that his photographs would display both an exemplary technical skill (especially photographing the high contrast land and seascapes) as well as a professionalism indicative of the careful thought put into the multiple and important uses these images would need to serve. Repeated takes of posed portraits for example, here seen together, give the sort of meticulous 'contact sheet' approach Ponting clearly used in order not to miss a shot. Interestingly, two particular examples of William Lashley show that Ponting was also not averse to a bit of post-production when it was called for, as in one version of the image, the motorised sleigh behind Las … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pym, Barbara
Cape, 1950, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: Good, First Edition. Author's First Book. ‘The Misses Bede are two middle-aged sisters living in a country village. Their world is a peaceful one, where the arrival of a new curate, the departure of the Archdeacon's wife on holiday, and the visits of a famous Librarian and a Colonial Bishop are exciting, even upsetting, events The contrasting personalities of the two sisters, showing themselves in Harriet's delight in curates and Belinda's more sober feeling for the Archdeacon, are brought out with sympathy and humour. Archdeacon Hoccleve — essentially comic for all his good looks and literary sermons stands out as the central male character. The background of village and church life gives scope for the introduction of some amusing minor characters — an Italian Count, a lady's companion, a little dressmaker and others. This is a quiet novel, where, as so often in a small self-contained community, the undercurrents of a vicarage garden party are no less important than an unexpected proposal of marriage.' Book - [SEE SCANS] - in Very Good light brown boards with blue lettering - light bumping to the right hand top corner of the front board and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light browning/spotting to long edge of half title & title page otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound.
