Manet Katz/ Moses Soyer
Near Fine/Good Minus. Listing this book is considerably more complicated than is typical. To begin with, it is 17.5 x 12" and my scanner surface is about 14 x 8.5". For anybody who is seriously interested in this book I would be happy to do my best to send extra images. Next, I've never listed anything that looks like this, so I'm not quite sure how to describe it. Hardcover? Softcover? Maybe it's like a portfolio. It has a dust jacket of a sort that is attached to cardboard covers. These are obviously the original covers and I've identified this as a First Edition. As to condition, I've rated this dust jacket only Good Minus. That is mainly due to considerable tearing along the edges and the spine. The front of the dust jacket (1st pic), however, is in pretty decent shape, although there is tanning at the top and bottom margins. The back (2nd pic) where there is a drawing in color looks quite decent as well, although there is a scuffed area near the bottom..Condition Continued below. Condition Continued: The inside of the dust jacket (the flaps so to speak) has areas of old dried glue residue (which never rubbed off on anything else). The interior of this book, by contrast, is in superior condition. The pages are Very clean. There are no markings (this is NOT ex-library) and there is no writing/underlining, etc., on any page in the book(excepting the artist's inscription). The only imperfections are very minor. One of the prints has a crease in the blank margin, hence not affecting it. Two others have tears (1/16th of an inch on one and 1/4 of an inch on the other) both of … [Click Below for Full Description]

george allen & unwin, 1950. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien - 1st edition, 1st impression set. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1954/54/55 UK Edition. I have the original hard back set of all 1st edition & 1st impression books (1954/54/55 ) of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien from Allen & Unwin, that have been privately owned in my family since 1954. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published 1954. I believe one of 1500 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published 1954. I believe one of 2250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published 1955. Original publisher's red cloth, top-stained red, original white, red, black and gold dust jackets with central images; some toning or foxing to endpapers and fore-edges, spine panels of jackets toned, some light spotting. All three books are in their correct 1st impression dustjackets which are in overall good condition with only a couple of very small tares as shown. With The Return Of The King being in very good condition and overall consistent aesthetic to the spines/set. Since these have remained in the family since 1954, they have no additional restoration or repairs which can often decrease the value than sold with their original flaws. The red tops are all in tact just with a bit of aged fade (I have not removed the dust) no ripped / missing pages etc. Only one book has an inscription on the first page to our family member from 1954. Neruda, Pablo
Imprenta Ju'arez, Santiago, 1950. Clandestine first Chilean edition of Neruda's stunning epic poem, published underground by the Communist party in Chile under a false imprint one month after the true first edition, published in Mexico from a different manuscript. Quarto, bound into contemporary red linen boards with parts of original printed wrappers serving as titles to the front panel and spine. Copyright leaf mounted to front pastedown bearing the false imprint "Imprenta Ju'arez, Reforma 75, Ciudad de M'exico D.F.", half tone portraits of Neruda tipped in at front and back. Inscribed by Neruda on the title page, "Al camarada Americo, Pablo Neruda." The recipient Americo Zorilla was a close friend of Neruda's and editor of the Chilean Communist daily newspaper, El Siglo. Zorilla facilitated the clandestine publication of five thousand copies of Neruda's Canto General in Chile, published under a false imprint and based on a manuscript Neruda had left behind before he went into hiding with the banning of the Communist Party under the Ley de Defensa Permanente de la Democracia in 1948. Neruda had officially joined the Communist Party of Chile in 1945 and served as campaign manager for the radical party's presidential candidate Gabriel Gonzalez Videal in 1946. Once in office, Gonzalez Videla turned against the Communist Party and Neruda was forced into hiding and later exile in Buenos Aires to avoid arrest. An exceptional association. "Canto General" ("General Song") consists of 15 sections, 231 poems, and more than 15,000 lines. It is the stunning epic of an entire continen … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Princeton: np, 1950. First edition. EINSTEIN RESPONDS TO A STUDENT, EXPLAINING A CENTRAL TENET OF RELATIVITY. The schoolboy David Cumberland had answered a test question saying that vertical lines are parallel; his answer, however, was marked as incorrect by his teacher on the grounds that the lines would converge at the earth's center. After Cumberland insisted he was correct, the teacher made a deal with him: if he could find an authority that would support his claim, his grade would be changed. Cumberland, apparently quite an enterprising young student, wrote to Einstein asking if vertical lines are indeed parallel and Einstein, in the present letter, responded, using relativity theory to provide support for the student's test answer: October 28, 1950 Mr. David Cumberland 924 S.E. 2nd Str. Fort Lauderdale, FL Dear Sir: The concept "vertical" has meaning only with respect to the earth and cannot be used beyond that context. But there is the other concept, lines vertical to an euclidian plane. Those lines are parallel. Sincerely yours, [signed] A. Einstein Albert Einstein. One of the central components of relativity is that our understanding of space and time is subject to the relevant frame of reference. In this letter, Einstein uses relativity - namely a shift in the frame of reference - to prove that boy's answer can be interpreted to be correct. Upon showing his teacher Einstein's letter, the boy's grade was indeed raised. One 8.5x11 inch sheet of Institute for Advanced Study letterhead. Usual folds; some water spots to page, not affecting text. A WONDERFUL LETTER SHOW … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.D. Salinger
A unique typed letter signed by J.D. Salinger (‘Jerry’ - adding ‘Miss you’), accompanied by the original hand-addressed envelope, post-marked ‘Westpart, May 30 / 1950’. An extraordinary letter to Joyce Miller in which the author alludes repeatedly to the piece he is working on and his deadline. Little did he know at the time that he was completing what would become his landmark title, which was published a year later: Catcher in the Rye. In part, ‘Another forty hours and I’ll probably be done. I doubt if I have the whole thing ready by Saturday, though. There’s no special hurry, actually, but I’m forever imposing mysterious little deadlines on myself. My mind’s hopelessly single tracked, and I’m quite a little bore when I’m working on a script.’ He also notes, ‘I can finish typing up the book at my parents’ apartment gracefully enough.’ Salinger continues his letter in jubilant fashion in a playful and suggestive letter to Joyce Miller, who was on the staff of The New Yorker in the 1940s and 1950s, when the author was publishing stories in the magazine. In fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

LORANT, Stefan. (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
1950. Hardcover. Fine. Typed complete manuscript. [243]pp., with 37 additional pages of notes, bibliography, and acknowledgments. Large quarto. Typed graph paper with some handwritten pages of various-sized, leaves bound in black quarter morocco gilt and gray linen over boards. A little rubbing and age-toning on the boards, small stains and wear on the leaves from author's use, still well-preserved and about fine. Heavily revised by the author on nearly every page with occasional inserted handwritten sheets, some cutting and pasting (in the old-timey analog sense of the phrase), as well as with some printer's directions in a separate hand. Published in 1950 by Simon and Schuster with the title: *F.D.R.: A Pictorial Biography*, the manuscript doesn't include any photographic illustrations, but Lorant indicates and in some cases made drawings of where they would be included, as well as provided the appropriate caption. Less well-known today, Lorant was an important Hungarian-born photojournalist, photographer, filmmaker, and author who had success in Germany as a filmmaker, before he fled Germany for England after he had been arrested by Hitler. In England he co-founded *Picture Post*, England's first important news and photo magazine, and then later immigrated to the U.S. (where he consulted Henry Luce on his creation of *Life* magazine, which emulated *Picture Post*), wrote several important biographies, and befriended luminaries as diverse as the Kennedys, Winston Churchill, and Marilyn Monroe. Quarto, original full black cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $1800.First edition, illustrated with 120 photogravures of Ceylon by Wendt."Lionel Wendt’s Ceylon is typical of his photographic style-pictorialist-modernist in the English mode-and illustrates a clash of two cultures, with Wendt looking at his own culture almost like an outsider Ostensibly a book of personal travel photographs, the usual tropes of the genre are here-lush landscapes, architectural and people studies-all heavily idealized. But there are also a fair number of nude studies, of both males and females These are typically pictorialist in style, with some Surrealist photomontages thrown in to show that Wendt was thoroughly up-to-date" (Parr&Badger II, 98). Offprint: Journal of Bacteriology, Vol. 63, No. 4, pp. 473-485, April 1952. 3 figs., 6 tables, refs. Self-wraps; two rusted (original) staples, slight stain from rust. Signature of Robert DeMars and author's name notation on cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION(s) of James D. Watson's first published research papers, in support of his doctoral candidacy, dealing with inactivation of T2 bacteriophage with X-Rays. Luria and Dulbecco had previously discovered (1949) that bacteriophage could be inactivated by ultraviolet irradiation, and in this paper Watson describes similar effects obtained by X-Ray exposure. A result of this investigation was that the required "killing" dosage or "hits" is logarithmically related to the intensity of the exposure, unlike ultraviolet irradiation. Through a sophisticated technique using heat-inactivated E. coli, Watson was able to measure the adsorptive capacities of various T-phages and postulate the damage done to a phage's ability to adsorb and infect a host bacterium, resulting in subsequent lysis. In his second paper, Watson demonstrates the indirec … [Click Below for Full Description]

SELDES, George, edited by
In Fact, New York, 1950. First editions. 21 volumes (complete). Quartos. Blue cloth (with some variations in shade of the blue). Paint flecks on one board, some rubbing and modest wear, overall very good and internally overall fine. Bound volumes (in publisher's cloth). A complete run of this radical political four-page newsletter issued bi-weekly, started and almost entirely written by noted journalist and gadfly George Seldes because of his perception that mainstream newspapers weren't printing important news out of fear of political and business interests. Although influential in its day, it was perhaps more important as an inspiration to other progressives including I.F. Stone, Daniel Ellsburg, Ralph Nadar, and Peggy Charren.Although not definitively marked as such, this is very likely the set owned by George Seldes' brother, the author and journalist Gilbert Seldes, by descent to his daughter, actress Marian Seldes. Laid into volume I is a photocopy of a seven-page typed autobiographical summary by George Seldes, signed "To Marian." Individual bi-annual volumes turn up on occasion, complete runs are very uncommon outside of libraries. [Attributes: First Edition]

[PANORAMIC CHINESE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE WITH PADDY FARMERS CULTIVATING RICE FIELDS]. Woodblock print in two parts on rice paper, mounted on cardboard hand-scroll. S.l., t. et a. 304:91 cm (print); 320:97 cm (sheets). Monumental woodblock print showing a panoramic Chinese agricultural landscape scenery mainly focussing on paddy farmers cultivating a big number of rice fields at different stages of production and harvesting. Complementary other members of an agricultural cooperative at their daily work are also depicted, as well as grassland, groups of trees and herds of small farm animals surrounding them. The woodblock print was executed in two parts of the same size and mounted on cardboard hand-scroll. It is not signed or numbered. Though also undated, bikers and power lines imply a scenery taking place during the Maoist era of the 1950s and 1970s. Margins in a few parts very slightly torn and creased, otherwise well preserved woodblock print, thanks to its tremendous size presumably unique in this state.
