Paul LASZLO
Beverly Hills, CA: Laszlo, Inc. Condition: Very Good. 4to. Glossy pictorial boards. No DJ, as issued. Very good or better. Some minor rubbing to boards, bump to top edge front cover. Faint sunning to edges. A number of pages loose, as common and as designed (see below). Else a sharp, bright and complete example of a fragile book. First edition of this promotional tool self-published by Laszlo to market his firm to high-end clients, while at the same time allowing some flexibility in its implementation. The design of the book's binding was such that individual pages could also be cleanly removed for individual (and smaller) client's particular needs. This led, however, to a book whose pages too-easily came apart from the binding, a decision Laszlo later came to regret. Includes designs and full-color photographs of numerous Laszlo projects including The McCulllough and Sunbeam Corps., the Mrs. Sam Genis and Mr. and Mrs. JK Ohrbach residences, The Brentwood Country Club, The Laurel Race Course, numerous examples of industrial designs (chairs, tables, etc.), as well as his iconic Laszlo (nuclear) Bomb Shelter. A lavish production from the quintessential Hollywood designer of the 1950's. Quite scarce. [Attributes: First Edition]

Shostakovich, Dmitri, Russian composer (1906-1975).
no place, [1950]. 8vo. 1 1/2 pp. With the original envelope signed, "DShostakovich," and addressed in his hand to the "Literary Bureau of Great Britain," in Russian, lacking postal markings. A speech [for the Sheffield World Congress of the Supporters of Peace], in Russian. "The ties between the Soviet Union and England are unbreakable. In the first years of the revolution, English workers protested with the slogan 'Hands off Soviet Russia!' When fascism was defeated in the last war, people of the Soviet Union saved England and Europe from immanent catastrophe. "Our peoples of the Soviet Union and England, shoulder to shoulder, are joining in the fight for peace. . . . "Artists, composers, writers, workers in all of the arts are the voice of consciousness of all the people, and that's why that voice should loudly rumble against the war. Under the protection of peace, and under the protection of Democracy, artists, statesmen of England, workers of all countries, expand and strengthen the powerful front of the Supporters of Peace." The second World Congress of the Supporters of Peace was scheduled to be held in Sheffield, England, in November of 1950. Because the British government suspected that the meeting organizers had seditious objectives and represented a threat to national security, the visa applications of a vast majority of the delegates were declined. Consequently, the meeting was moved to Warsaw, Poland. Among the delegates who were turned away was Shostakovich. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Very good. Unique author's collotype book with traces of editing, made by collotype (1950-ies): Author: Igor Gouzenko Title: «The Fall of a Titan» Language: Russian Weight: 3,5 kg «The Fall of a Titan» was translated into dozens of languages and even nominated for a Nobel prize. However, this book was never published in Russian. We offer you a author's collotype book with traces of editing (1950-ies). Please note: 1. This handwriting is by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. 2. The book is manufactured using the COLLOTYPE PRINTING. It is NOT directly from his pen. It is a collotype printing of what he submitted to the publisher. Part of the book is printed in black. Part of the book is printed in blue. 3. The collotype copy contains many handwriting notes on the text by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. So Igor Guzenko himself a lot edited this copy. Igor Sergeyevich Gouzenko was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. He defected on September 5, 1945, with 109 documents on Soviet espionage activities in the West. This forced Prime Minister Mackenzie King to call a Royal Commission to investigate espionage in Canada. The New York Times described Gouzenko's actions as having «awakened the people of North America to the magnitude and the danger of Soviet espionage». Igor Gouzenko - the man who started the Cold War, the cryptographer, who gave to Canada 109 secret documents: codes and data of Soviet agents. These materials led to the arrest and conviction of at least ten agents. Soviet historians take for the beginning of the cold war Winston Church … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clement Greenberg. 1950. Quadrangle Press. SIGNED BY
Condition: Good. Greenberg, Clement. JOAN MIRO. Published in New York in 1950 by The Quadrangle Press, our copy is the first revised edition. This book is signed by Greenberg to Francis Golffing and Barbara Gibbs. Francis was a prolific writer of and on poetry, essays, philosophy and art, with a number of books to his name. Barbara was an American poet and translator with four volumes of poetry to her name. Clement Greenberg was an American essayist known mainly as an influential visual art critic closely associated with American Modern art of the mid-20th century. In particular, he is best remembered for his promotion of the abstract expressionist movement and was among the first published critics to praise the work of painter Jackson Pollock. He is considered to be the single most influential art critic of the 20th century. Greenberg signed very few books, so his signature is considered rare. Ernest Hemingway
London: Jonathan Cape, 1950. The first chapter opens on the last day in the life of protagonist, Colonel Richard Cantwell, who is duck hunting in Trieste. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback, with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman, Renata, and about his life as a soldier during the war. In Italy, Hemingway had met a young woman, Adriana Ivancich, with whom he was infatuated and he used as the model for the female character in the novel. A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961) was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. CONDITION In a green cloth binding with an embossed cover design. Externally smart. Some light shelfwear to the boards, with light discolouration to the extremities and some sunning to spine. Dustwrapper generally sound with some wear and browning to the extremities and some loss to spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Nabokov, Vladimir
New York: Signet Books, 1950. First printing of this edition, and first printing in paperback of Nabokov's first novel, originally titled "Kamera Obscura." INSCRIBED by Nabokov for publisher Kurt Enoch: "Vladimir Nabokov / IV.1950." [McCullers, Carson. 1917 - 1967]. Poor, Henry Varnum [1887 -
Ca 1950s? SIGNED by Poor. Framed: 11-3/4" x 9 1/4". Housed in a period wooden frame. Very Good condition. Item #5580 Presumed to be a preliminary sketch for Poor's 1961 painting of McCullers now at the Smith-McCullers House Museum in Columbus, GA, from the collection donated to Columbus State University by Dr. Mary Mercer. Mercer treated both McCullers and Poor's daughter, Anne, in Nyack, NY, for psychiatric problems, beginning in the late 1950s/ early 1960s, and became a friend and medical advocate to McCullers for the rest of the author's life. When McCullers died in 1967, Mercer inherited a third of her property, including correspondence and artwork; by 2013, this had become the core of the Dr. Mary E. Mercer/Carson McCullers Collection at CSU. According to the online CSU holdings, Folder 2-D.1, the archive contains a letter from Poor to Mercer, dated 1961, thanking her for buying "all those drawings from my little show at the Market Fair"; the provenance of this sketch suggests that it was sold at or around the same time. Henry Varnum Poor was a renowned American artist who studied at Stanford, the Slade School and the Julian Academy in Paris, after which he moved to New York. He was a contemporary of Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper, with pieces on exhibit in the MoMA, the Whitney, the Art Institute of Chicago and The Worcester Art Museum. McCullers was a 20th-century American author, best known for her 1940 novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. The letter reads as follows: "Cocteau and Marais are in Egypt. They are the only people I've tried to look up so far, but the English director Peter Brook is here and will introduce me to some French theatre personalities tomorrow. I'm supposed to be back in London for Olivier's rehearsals in mid-August, and then I hope we shall see more of each other and you will introduce me to Beatrice. For several weeks now I have been working on a novella, the first draft is finished and I'll show it to you when I return. It's the longest piece of fiction I've done and I want your opinion of it: at least I hope that I will like it well enough to want your opinion of it! Ever, Tennessee" The book itself is a first edition by New Directions in Very Good ++ condition, with an unclipped, Alvin Lustig dust jacket. The Letter is the more significant item, and is easily removeable from the book should the buyer … [Click Below for Full Description]

LASZLO, Paul

Connecticut, USA: Institute of Commercial Art. This set was purchased from the estate of Gerald Farm, the "Rockwell of the West." It is nearly complete; the only binder missing is the Dorne. Below are the artists in this collection: - Rockwell - Parker - Whitcomb - Fawcett - Ludekens - Dohanos - Atherton - Von Schmidt - Stahl - Briggs - Helck These were a correspondence course from the Institute for Commercial Art in Westport, Connecticut in the 50s. This set is dated 1950. Each book was written by its subject artist, and goes into intricate, illustrated detail on his process. Sometimes you will see a 4-book set called "Famous Artists Program"; this is NOT the same set, and is much harder to come by. There is presently a set for sale just like this one for $5,000 at a rare book dealer in California. (All but the Dorne - I wonder if it was ever published.) Binders were in a working artist's studio, so they have paint splatters, etc. on them (see pictures). Some of the pages have underlining/marginal notes made by Mr. Farm. If you would like further detail or pics of specific pages, please contact me. Shipping will be via FedEx and insured for the full value. Interestingly, you will notice that Mr. Farm's name is not embossed on the lower right corner of this set, as was commonly done, although his name was embossed on the 4-book set, which I also acquired (not included in this listing). I will provide documentation of the purchase from his estate, in case the provenance is important to you. [Attributes: First Edition]
