C.S. Lewis
Bles, London, 1950. HARDBACK - The book is in good condition with staining to the front board and also with ghosting to the spine. Internally, the pages are very clean indeed, with just a very small brown mark to the bottom corner of the first couple of pages. No foxing to the text, with the book tightly bound. The dust wrapper is in good only condition with a number of chips to the books extremities. Chipping to the spine tips, also to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. There is staining to the right of the front panel. The dust wrapper is the correct first edition, first impression. Not the prettiest dust wrapper, but a very scarce and collectable example, free of any restoration, but a possible candidate for restoration due to its rarity. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1950. First edition of Buechner's brilliant first novel. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author with a full page inscription on the front free endpaper, "I was only a few years older than Patrick when I wrote this. Whenever I glance at it, I am embarrassed. The fact that for many people it remains my best known book embarrasses me still more. Nonetheless, I inscribe it with all the best wishes. For Patrick, Christopher, Celia, and Greg Ross. - Frederick Buechner August 1987." Laid in is a postcard in Buechner's hand addressed to Greg Ross, "29. vii. 89 Dear Mr. Ross, I share your horror and would be happy to sign the ancient volume. Best wishes, Frederick Buechner." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable with such a lengthy inscription by Buechner. A Long Day's Dying is a mid-twentieth-century Jamesian novel that foreshadows many of the themes in Mr. Buechner's later writing: faith, trust, and the complex relations of family and friends. The story follows Tristram Bone, a man of wealth and leisure but a failure with women, and Elizabeth Poor, a rich and beautiful widow and Bone's unrequited love interest, through a series of encounters, affairs and innuendos. CAZDEN, Norman 1914-1980
Born to Yiddish-speaking Russian immigrant parents, Cazden studied at Juilliard, City College, and later at Harvard under Aaron Copland and Walter Piston. He composed for dance companies and also performed as a concert pianist. "Cazden also taught at the Peabody Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and since 1950 at the University of Illinois in Springfield. After being investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee, he lost this position in 1953 and received no academic position for the next 16 years. He gave private piano lessons during this time and worked on research on folk music. Beginning in 1969 he taught at the University of Maine." Wikipedia. "Among... [his] works in the folk vein, the most distinctive is Stony Hollow for orchestra, Op. 47. It is like a montage of the music at a square dance. One of its features is the treatment of the trumpet as the voice of the caller... Sometimes the calls are announced in a regular patter, elsewhere merely as interjections or as addenda to a phrase. The country fiddler is audible as is also the concertina-accordion player with his in-and-out tonic and dominant harmony (measures 146-151). The sudden shifts of tonality and meter (measures 93-94) within the framework of the basic beat, the varied themes unified with the main motif, the skillful combining of themes (measures 152-160) where six independent melodic lines occur simultaneously including Yankee Doodle in the bass - all these make Stony Hollow an outstanding work deserving a place in regular orchestra repertoire." normancazden.com.. Finely bound by Bayntun in full green calf with five raised bands to spine, ruled and lettered in gilt with five illustrations from the book stamped in gilt to front board, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, gray marbled endpapers. A near fine copy, a touch of wear to front hinge and spine ends, contemporary gift inscription to first free leaf, else fine. Overall, a beautiful copy in a charming, bright binding. Winnie-the-Pooh is the second in Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Each telling an individual and complete story, the chapters of Winnie-the-Pooh can be read independently of one another. Milne created the story of Winnie the Pooh for his son Christopher Robin, who had a teddy bear named Edward Bear. In his introduction, Milne explains how Edward Bear became Winnie the Pooh, although he notes that "we can't remember whether Winnie is called after Pooh, or Pooh after Winnie." The name "Winnie" comes from a bear that the Milnes saw at the London Zoo, while the name "Pooh" is from a swan whom the fictional Christopher Robin encountered in When We Were Very Young (1924). Fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kuhfuss, Paul
Midcentury French tabletop wooden game based on the Space Race of the 1950's and 1960's between the Soviet Union and the United States, housed inside of a hinged wooden box and comprised of a revolving spring-loaded wooden launcher, two original plastic rockets for launching, a set of score-keeping beads, and a color illustration of Soviet and American rockets and satellites in space affixed to the inside of the lid with eight different target cups bearing the names of various planets and rockets, the same illustration affixed to the exterior of the lid. Very light signs of wear and shallow scratches to exterior, excellent overall condition. Vox measures 21-1/2 by 11-3/4 by 3 inches, closed. N.p. (France) n.d. (circa 1960s). The Space Race officially began on August 2, 1955, when the Soviet Union responded to the announcement made by the United States 4 days ealier of their intent to launch artifical satellites, by declaring that they would also launch a satellite in the near future. This game features major figures from the Space Race, with the red launch rocket (and corresponding red target cup and accompanying illustration) referring to Yuri Gagarin, the first human to orbit Earth, and the yellow launch rocket (and corresponding yellow target cup and accompanying illustration) referring to Leroy Gordon Cooper, the US astronaut who manned the longest and final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. The other target cups have labels for the moon, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. A well-made tabletop game, from a time of global fascination with outer space and spaceflight.

signed in pencil by the photographer, showing the wedding group surrounded by their bridesmaids, who include Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, daughter of George V, Princess Maud, daughter of HRH Duchess of Fife, Lady May Cambridge and Alistair the son of Princess Alexandra of Fife, 12½" x 8½", no place, (Buckingham Palace), no date, Princess Patricia of Connaught was deeply loved by the British people for her natural ways. King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra profoundly wanted a marriage with Grand Duke Michael of Russia. Very unusually the Princess, when she married Admiral Sir Alexander Ramsay fought to lose her title. The King reluctantly agreed on condition that she still remained head of Peeresses of the Realm. Theirs was to prove an exceptionally happy marriage of over 50 years and by the late 1950s, because of the couple's dignity, they remained very much en famille with the Royal Family. From the collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay, daughter of the Duke of Connaught.
