Delarue, Jacques and Robert Giraud, Robert Doisneau
La Roulotte, Paris, 1950. Small 4to, 56 [64] pp, bound in printed boards and photographically illustrated dust jacket. One of the rare 50 numbered copies of the edition original, preceding the trade issue. In addition, this is an important association copy, inscribed by Delarue to Alain Campagne, a fellow researcher in tattoo history, whose own book Le Tatouage: Etude Psychopathologique a Propos de 293 Observations, published in a fugitive edition for his psychiatric studies, remains one of the largest unpublished studies of the time. Probably the most famous tattoo book of the postwar period, written by the police detective Delarue, who also contributed 80 drawings of tattoos, which are reproduced in the page margins. The book is most famous for the 80 photographic plates, each full page and printed on coated stock, including ten images by the great Robert Doisneau. The bulk of the remaining photographs are taken from the work of Lacassagne and the Muséé de l'Homme. In addition to the page toning, the boards are rubbed at the head and foot of spine, with superficial splits to the paper covering the gutters at head of spine. The rare dust jacket is present, but missing large sections of the upper portions of the front panel, and shows extensive creasing, rubbing and chipping to margins. A battered, but sound copy, and rare in the numbered edition, and as an association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

ELIOT, T. S.
London: Faber and Faber Ltd, 1950. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine a little cocked, minor fading to cloth along edges of boards, an excellent copy in a very good jacket, tanned to spine panel, lightly nicked at the extremities with a small closed tear at top of front joint and a small chip from the top of front panel just affecting titles. First edition, first impression, a major association copy, presented by Eliot to Ezra Pound, with his affectionate inscription, "Ez from O. Possum, 6.iii.50" to the front free endpaper, dated three days before publication. Eliot of course owed an eternal debt of gratitude to Pound - "il miglior fabbro" - for his editorial shaping of The Waste Land. At the time of this inscription Pound was still being held in St Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington DC, working on the Cantos and his translations of Sophocles. In the judgement of his lover Olga Rudge he still harboured "bats in the belfry". What Pound's sentiments must have been on receipt of this play can only be guessed at, but Rudge, who attended a matinee of The Cocktail Party in London, wrote to Pound urging him to "encourage His friend, the Possum, who does love Him, she feels it.'" In July 1946 Eliot had visited Pound at St Elizabeth's, considering his situation "very grim", and petitioned for him to be moved to better quarters. Subsequently, Eliot sought to help Pound, notably by having Faber & Faber publish the UK edition of the Pisan Cantos in 1949, and also by manoeuvrin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thanks for looking.Outlaw gangs go as far back in history as the beginning of man, with the word "thug" (Thugz) dating to 1200 A.D. when gangs in India were pillaging many of the country's towns. These gangs often had their own hand signs, rituals, symbols and slang, as they clustered together for means of force and protection. During the 1800's, Americans were fascinated by gangs and their members such as the James Gang, Billy the Kid's Gang, the Doolin-Dalton Gang, the Wild Bunch and dozens of others that ruled the Wild West. Location cannot be determined from other photos with the exception of some cdvs marked Marietta, OH (Cadwallader &amp Tappen) but the house trim and landscape provides some clues. That photographer did take images as Lookout Mountain after the Battle of Chattanooga so one of those photographers is a possibility. Southeast mountainous region likely. Cabin highly likely to be a temporary itinerant photographer's studio based on the roof opening and canvas to adjust lighting conditions. A gentleman said the cabin is similar in style to General Grant's cabin and headquarters at City Point, VA. Three officers in the group of five with a dog resting on the porch. [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good. Unique author's collotype book with traces of editing, made by collotype (1950-ies): Author: Igor Gouzenko Title: «The Fall of a Titan» Language: Russian Weight: 3,5 kg «The Fall of a Titan» was translated into dozens of languages and even nominated for a Nobel prize. However, this book was never published in Russian. We offer you a author's collotype book with traces of editing (1950-ies). Please note: 1. This handwriting is by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. 2. The book is manufactured using the COLLOTYPE PRINTING. It is NOT directly from his pen. It is a collotype printing of what he submitted to the publisher. Part of the book is printed in black. Part of the book is printed in blue. 3. The collotype copy contains many handwriting notes on the text by the hand of Igor Gouzenko himself. So Igor Guzenko himself a lot edited this copy. Igor Sergeyevich Gouzenko was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. He defected on September 5, 1945, with 109 documents on Soviet espionage activities in the West. This forced Prime Minister Mackenzie King to call a Royal Commission to investigate espionage in Canada. The New York Times described Gouzenko's actions as having «awakened the people of North America to the magnitude and the danger of Soviet espionage». Igor Gouzenko - the man who started the Cold War, the cryptographer, who gave to Canada 109 secret documents: codes and data of Soviet agents. These materials led to the arrest and conviction of at least ten agents. Soviet historians take for the beginning of the cold war Winston Church … [Click Below for Full Description]

Text in French. Wrappers worn with some shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Edmond Hoyois remains a mysterious artist and it is not impossible that his name is actually a pseudonym. He is best known for having exhibited several times at the Salon des Humoristes, an event created in 1907 by Felix Juven, director of Le Rire newspaper. This Salon brings together the painters attached to the life of Montmartre who choose to express their art through humor. Forain, Willette, Faivre, Poulbot and many others present their works as Hoyois. This Salon is quickly becoming one of the most popular artistic events of the Belle Epoque. The Salon des Humoristes lasted until the early 1930s, when Hoyois also exhibited at the Salon de l'Ecole Française in Paris. 1950 Poesies Je Me Suis Donne Edmond Hoyois Avant Garde Poetry Pseudonym? 1950. Good with creases and bends. This booklet was published by John Griegs Boktrykkeri in Bergen. This is an original publication, not a reprint. 34 pages. 16 full-page, full-color illustrations. 18 pages with text, most of which are accompanied by the "bullet whizzing around the Earth" illustration. Half of the pages can be viewed in the scans provided. Storyline: A boy fires a pistol in the air. The bullet circles the globe, piercing objects on the surface and creating mayhem for the people (and a tiger) around such objects. Gimmick employed: A round hole is punched through all of the interior pages, therefore, on each page a hole conveys the effect of the piercing bullet within each scene drawn by the illustrator. The resulting mayhem is one source of the book's humor. The other is the racial stereotyping employed by the illustrator. Frederik Bramming, a Danish artist, is famous for his frolicking "paper elves." Reproductions of which, are endemic, because they remain loveable and do not violate political correctness or offend anyone's racial pride. It's unlikely that this booklet will ever be reprinted because of the racial and national stereotypes. I couldn't find any attribution of this book to the illustrator, or the author, on the internet. Zinken Hopp was a prolific children's author, still held in high esteem, in her native Norway. I viewed numerous online posts about her, some with lists of her books. This book was absent from all lists and no mention of it was given. Either it is largely unknown because of it's rarity, or it's purposefully ignored, because it' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shaw, Irwin (text by); Robert Capa (photographs by)
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1950. Quarto (10 1/4 x 7"). 144pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers with white lettering to covers and spine. Title page inscribed and signed by Robert Capa: "To Rona, hoping that he won't have to pay for my Paris hotel bills again. Capa." the inscription refers to Capa's early years in Paris, at a time when he didn't have enough money to pay for his hotel rooms. At one point, the manager of the hotel he stayed at confiscated his shoes, thus Rona had to bail him out (Whelan, 1994.) Rona was also a Hungarian émigré who owned the ABC Press photo agency in Amsterdam, which represented photographers like Capa or László Moholy-Nagy, later the Magnum Photos in The Netherlands. This book serves as a photo-document of the then newly founded state of Israel, capturing the already diverse cultural, sociological and physical landscape. By the time this work was published, Robert Capa was already an acclaimed war photographer, photojournalist and one of the founders of Magnum Photos. Subjects ranging from politicians and military leaders, to new immigrants, farmers and the Ultra-orthodox community are featured. Irwin Shaw's text provides relevant and informative information to accompany and give context to the stunning b&w photographs taken by Capa. Wrappers rubbed along joints and edges. Head of spine chipped. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

CAMUS Albert Les Justes [The Just Assassins] Gallimard, Paris 1950, 115 x 180 mm (4 1/2 x 7 1/16 "), publisher's paper binding First edition, one of the 1050copies numbered 1050 on alfa mousse paper. Publisher's paper binding with an original design by Mario Prassinos. A handsome and important inscription from Albert Camus to Rene Char: "à Rene Char, frere de ceux-ci, dont il a fait toute la route avec l'admiration et l'affection de son ami. / Albert Camus". [To Rene Char, brother of the undersigned, with whom he has been there all the way, with admiration and affection from his friend / Albert Camus.] The friendship between Albert Camus and Rene Char is among the most touching and most fruitful in French literature. There was nothing obvious to bring together the Algerian journalist and author and the Provencal poet, much less to suggest a mutual affinity. Camus had not come across Char's poetry and Char had no taste for novels, apart from those of Maurice Blanchot. Nonetheless, it is through their respective works that the two artists found out about each other and developed a mutual respect. So - before Camus and Char actually met - they had met through Caligula and Hypnos - both illustrating the poet's responsibility in the face of the violent world. "So in our darkness Beauty has no given space. All that space is for Beauty" (Char, Feuillets d'Hypnos). It is this mutual need for Beauty as a political response to the outrageousness of ideologies that united the two artists at the end of the war. Catalyst to their friendship, this first "acknowledgment" inaugurated a twe … [Click Below for Full Description]
