Rosenbaum, David Howell
[Ogden]: (c.1950). Oil on board [61 cm x 77 cm] in a nice custom frame [69 cm x 85 cm] signed at the foot near the center in red. Item #1748 Bright painting from the notoriously reclusive artist. Image depicts a bar scene showing a sailor, woman and a bald man laughing and smiling. The sailor is likely a reference to the time Rosenbaum spent in Guadalcanal during World War II. David Howell Rosenbaum (1908-1982) was born in Brigham City and was part of the Logan group of artists who studied with Calvin Fletcher at the Utah State Agriculture College (USU) in 1931. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA Federal Art Project, painting many of his best-known works. In 1938, Rosenbaum moved to New York City to attend the Art Students League. Rosenbaum joined the navy at the start of the United States involvement in World War II. During his service in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, he drew many scenes and made several small watercolor paintings. He arrived home again sometime after the war, and was a staunch recluse from that time on. He died in Ogden over thirty years later, without saying too much more to anybody connected with his earlier years as one of our most gifted painters. Rosenbaum was one of the earliest expressionist artists in Utah, and he painted some of the state's most dynamic landscapes. Using bold brushwork and thoughtful compositions, Rosenbaum created rich and vivid paintings.

[Shermund, Barbara]
No place: [ca. 1950]. 1 vols. 12 1/2" x 9 1/2"; in an archival mat, overall dimensions 18" x 15" Fine New Yorker Cover Design. On medium-weight art paper, fine condition. Although this is a preparatory drawing, it is a well-rendered, lively, and highly decorative image, consisting of a montage of fall motifs: colorful foliage, spacious skies, amber grain, purple mountains, fruited plains, a church, a silo, a school complete with child, tourist directions, with "The New Yorker" lettered at the top and a vertical border of grapes at the left edge. Although not used as a cover, this delightful design would have made a wonderful one. One the verso of the drawing is a portion of an ink sketch of a mother, daughter, and lady visitor in a living room. Barbara Shermund, a talented artist, did a number of cartoon drawings for popular magazines. Along with Helen Hokinson and Mary Petty, she was also one of the few female artists to work extensively for The New Yorker.

NELSON, Rick (1940-85)
Ozzie and Harriet's son grew up with America on this couple's radio and television show before becoming a pop and rock singing star in his own right in the late 1950s; a few film roles followed ("Rio Bravo" with John Wayne and "The Wackiest Ship in the Army" with Jack Lemmon, among others) and he added country music to his repertoire, but he died at age 45 in a plane crash in Texas. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., n.y. Very good. Barely visible tape stain and staple holes at each corner in blank outer margin. Handsome colorized half-length portrait of a young Nelson crooning into a microphone, guitar slung over right shoulder. In a blank area at upper left, he boldly inscribes and signs in black ink "To Donald Burnell / Best Wishes, / Rick Nelson." Undated, but of early 1960s vintage. A choice example from the height of his fame. Very scarce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

s.l. [Klaskovgaard]: 1950. [Click Below for Full Description]

Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Theft Reward Sign. Heavy gauge metal sign, with yellow and black background, measures 18" x 10". In good condition, sign has wave to the metal located at the middle of the sign, moderate rust and heavy scratching to all edges and on verso, and moderate rubbing to paint on both sides. Although rustling is far from a new issue, it is still a persistent problem within the cattle industry. Most cattle associations advise the top ways to prevent cattle theft are to display signs like this one on gates and entrances, as well as brand cattle and horses, making sure the brand is recorded. The Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association was registered in 1950, although there were many county organizations existing throughout the state, documented as early as the 1930's. Lyle Boren wrote the charter of incorporation for the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association and within the next few years many of the local and county associations merged together to become a more active and involved group (Oklahoma Historical Society). Moderately worn, this sign was put to good use and hopefully prevented the theft of valuable cattle.

Photographer unknown - Bob Mizer
Los Angeles ?: Los Angeles (?): undated, ca. 1950's. Condition: Near fine. Los Angeles (?), undated, ca. 1950's. Near fine. 73 photographic prints, each with several smaller, related images (1,052 images in total). Prints measure about 4 1/8" x 5", and each image is smaller, with the smallest dimensions being about half an inch, and the largest slightly more than one inch. Generally, they are about 3/4" x 1". Condition is overall near fine, with curling at the edges, but hardly any wear to speak of. One print has some residue, while another has been cut to remove two or three of the images. Else really a lovely collection. Each print seems to be a kind of catalogue or order form for suggestive/erotic photographs of men wearing next to nothing. The photographer's Los Angeles address and order information at the bottom. That address is for AMG, which stood for Athletic Model Guild, and was Bob Mizer's home and studio. Mizer published the magazine Physique Pictorial, ostensibly a fitness magazine, but which was commonly known as an erotic magazine for gay men. Numerous other photographers, some referred to only by their first names, also have work represented here, including Lyle [Frisby]. Many of the models' first names are also present. Our best guess is that these pocket-sized catalogues were meant for discreet circulation among the public. A number of the images depict two men, grappling or wrestling with each other, or just posing suggestively, and wearing just a very minimal loincloth. While there is not much clothing to speak of in this entire collection, there are some … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mervyn Peake
1950. Titus Groan is seven years old. Lord and heir to the crumbling castle Gormenghast.A gothic labyrinth of roofs and turrets, cloisters and corridors, stairwells and dungeons, it is also the cobwebbed kingdom of Byzantine government and age-old rituals, a world primed to implode beneath the weight of centuries of intrigue, treachery, and death. Steerpike, who began his climb across the roofs when Titus was born, is now ascending the spiral staircase to the heart of the castle, and in his wake lie imprisonment, manipulation, and murder.Gormenghast is the second volume in Mervyn Peake's widely acclaimed trilogy, but it is much more than a sequel to Titus Groan it is an enrichment and deepening of that book. At this very moment, a new generation of fantasy fans is growing to love this masterpiece that ranks as one of the twentieth century's most remarkable feats of imaginative writing.

A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961) was an American author and journalist.
