Berryman, John
[New York]: William Sloane Associates, (1950). First edition. Frontispiece portrait of Crane from an 1898 photo. xv, [iii], 347, [1] pp. 8vo. Inscribed. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed just after publication on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. & Mrs. Smillie, with very many thanks for a kindness and hospitality & the return of a shabby but fairly warm topcoat. Best, John Berryman. 21 Nov 1950." With postscript, "I think you will find the chronology of your letters more or less right -- they are much earlier than Mrs. Smillie Senior thought." The Smillies were related to Lily Brandon Munroe, an early love interest of Crane's, whom he met in the summer of 1892, around the time of his writing Maggie: "This summer the boy had fallen in love again. She was a young matron, Lily Brandon Munroe ... " (p. 45). Crane's letters to "L.B.," as he called her, are some of his most ardent and impassioned expressions of love, and counter the common picture of Crane as generally aloof and ambivalent towards women. The Smillies evidently allowed Berryman access to the letters in their possession -- which Berryman quotes from in his work -- and he acknowledged their assistance in the final paragraph of his Preface (p. xv). Stefanik A6.1.a. Publisher's maroon cloth stamped in gold. Very good, with some offsetting from dust-jacket flaps and rear hinge starting, in a lightly chipped and creased unclipped dust-jacket, spine panel faded.

CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE DEPARTMENT
c.1950-60. First edition. Illustrated with halftone photographs throughout. 700 x 120mm. Loose sheets bolt bound with releasable latch mechanism. Stiff brown card boards with faux leather finish, very worn and scuffed. Titlepage torn with small losses, waterstained throughout, occasional manuscript annotations and doodles, evidence of heavy use, in all weather, as would be expected. Condition unaffecting legibility of content. [109]ll. Glasgow, City of Glasgow Police Force, n.d. but Very scarce 'in-field' or beat police mugshot book from crime-ridden Glasgow, and more specifically found in signal police boxes for on-patrol police. CHAR(13) + CHAR(10)CHAR(13) + CHAR(10)A Glasgow fireman patented the signal boxes in 1891, and by 1931, the city had a network of 323 to increase the efficiency of and communication of constables on the beat. The police ?signal? box system was therefore introduced as a means of decentralising the police force. Placing police boxes on the street effectively provided each constable with a mini police station, and it was later found that beat constables did not actually have to make any physical contact with a police station proper. The mugshot book therefore lived in the signal box, out in the elements, thus the obvious use and wear of the book itself. The book contains [alphabetised by last name] profiles criminal mugshots [all male], their Scottish Criminal Record Office Number, physical description, crime profiles, and handwritten annotations with amendments to their profile, for example: 'deceased', 'Has parrot on his shoulder', and even scribbl … [Click Below for Full Description]

An Very Good, mega rare, signed (by Thor Heyerdahl to f.f.e.p. - see picture)s, first impression, first De Luxe Limited (70/350) edition (published by Theodore Brun for The Collector's Book Club), hardback book. No d.j. as published. In full maroon leather and gilt title and Kon-Tiki motif to front board (see pictures). Top page edges gilt. Black and white plates throughout. Book shows a little wear, very slight sun-fade to board edges, a little text block browning and a few light spots. Published by Theodore Brun, 1950. Thor Heyerdahl (Norwegian pronunciation: [tuːr ˈhæɪəɖɑːl]; October 6, 1914 - April 18, 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany, and geography. He became notable for his Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between separate cultures. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl subsequently made other voyages designed to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient people. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984. In May 2011, the Thor Heyerdahl Archives were added to UNESCO's "Memory of the World" Register.[1] At the time, this list included 238 collections from all over the world.[2] The Heyerdahl Archives span the years 1937 to 2002 and include his photographic collection, diaries, private letter … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis, C.S. (Clive Staples)
Geoffrey Bles and Bodley Head 1950-1956. C.S. Lewis (1950-56) ‘The Chronicles of Narnia‘, the complete set. ALL seven volumes are UK first editions, first printings with the correct and original first issue dust jackets. An amazing collection of one of the most important, most influential and iconic children and fantasy literature of all time. Highly coveted and rarely seen as a complete set. 1) ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe‘ (1950): in very good condition. No previous owners’ names inside the book, no stamps, no bookplates. Pages are clean, no foxing. Slight lean and the boards are faded on the spine and the edges of the boards as shown. Fading to the boards is quite common with this title, especially on the spine. The dust jacket is the original first impression wrapper (no reprint indicated on the front flap, and no other Narnia titles advertised on the rear panel). It is not price clipped displaying the correct first issue 8s 6d net price. The jacket has been restored by Richard Reeve, a professional restorer of dust jackets. The repair involved the closing of tears, and minor filling of chipping and smaller parts. 2) ‘Prince Caspian – The Return to Narnia‘ (1951): in very good condition. Short and neat gift inscription on the half title page, previous owner’s name, and a small FOYLES bookseller sticker on the bottom of the ffep. Clean pages, occasional slight foxing. The front board with no issues, rear board slightly soiled with one corner bump. The dust jacket shows the correct 10s 6d net price. Slightly soiled on the rear panel. Henry-Rene D'Allemagne
Paris: Librairie Gründ. Condition: Very good +. Number 165 of 700, folio size, 237 pp., illustrated, text in French. Le Noble Jeu de L'Oie...("The Noble Game of the Goose") can be traced back to at least 1480, when it was mentioned in an Advent sermon - warning churchgoers not to play Goose and other games at Christmas. The game is simple, with the players rolling the dice and moving the requisite number of spaces, with no skill on the part of the player required; however, using double dice, the game could reach a fast and furious pitch. While many Americans are not aware of Goose, it has had a profound effect on the development of many board games still played by children today, as the circular game board and rules are similar to "Chutes and Ladders." This book, published in 1950, is an authoritative bibliography on the game, presenting examples of many different types of boards used over the centuries with definitive text on the game. Game boards have yielded vast and varying themes, including commerce, industry, sports, fine art, hot air balloons, heraldry, astrology, spiritualism, plants, animals, railways, theater, fashion, children's games, daily life, the alphabet et al. DESCRIPTION: Original illustrated paper covered boards, with lettering printed in black to backstrip, plain endpapers, mostly unopened, forty-eight double-page photo gravures, nine of which are hand-colored, headers, footers, many textual illustrations and vignettes, all text in French; folio size (13.25" by 10"), pagination: [1-5] 6-237 [1 colophon], limited edition, number 165 of 700. WAUGH, Evelyn.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1950. Octavo. Original white cloth, titles to spine gilt. Housed in a quarter green morocco slipcase. Spine and edges of the boards somewhat tanned. Very good condition. First edition, first impression, presentation copy to Graham Greene, one of about 50 copies of the large paper issue, specially bound and printed on handmade paper. This copy is inscribed by Waugh on the front free endpaper, "for Graham from Evelyn Oct 1st, 1950", and has the estate label of Graham Greene to the front pastedown. On 16 November 1950 Waugh wrote to Greene thanking him "awfully for writing about Helena. I hardly hoped you would like it. I am exhilarant to hear you do." The copy is, however, almost entirely unopened - only the last 50 pages are cut - suggesting that Greene merely read the ending and wrote his appraisal from that. Nonetheless, given their shared conversions to Catholicism, this presentation of Waugh's historical novel (which he thought his best) concerning Helena, the Christian mother of Emperor Constantine I, makes for a particularly apposite association between the two great writers and friends. Wanamaker, Sam (director, producer, starring); Tennessee
New Directions Books. First Edition of Tennessee William's 1950 play, profusely annotated for a 1959 West End production. Copy belonging to actor-director-producer Sam Wanamaker, with his holograph notations throughout. Red boards, worn overall, with Wanamaker's name inscribed in holograph black ink to the front board. Includes a loose sheet with the actors' addresses laid in. Wanamaker had a long and prolific acting career, spanning from Hollywood to Broadway to the West End. In 1952, while filming "Mr. Denning Drives North," he learned of his addition to the blacklist due to his youthful association with the communist party. As a result, he permanently relocated to London in 1952 and reestablished his career on stage and on the screen. He became absorbed in the restoration of the Shakespeare Globe Theatre, dedicating much of his time and resources to the project for the remainder of his life. The London production of Williams' play opened January 15th, 1959 and starred Sam Wanamaker, Lea Padovani, and Julie Allan. The book clearly followed Wanamaker through every stage of production, each page annotated with numerous stage directions and character motivations. Overall, a fantastic little piece of history. Very Good lacking dust jacket. Light rubbing and soiling overall, fading to the spine. Bumped to the board edges and profusely annotated. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
