Haywood Patterson and Earl Conrad
First Edition, first printing. Dust jacket is not price clipped and is in good condition with some slight edge-wear and tiny tears, all under a centimeter. Beautifully preserved colors on the dramatic dust jacket. No sunfade or foxing to either the jacket, the front and back boards, or the spine. This is an important book of African American biographical literature, in a rare surviving volume with dust jacket and SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Scottboro Boy is the life story of Haywood Patterson, one of the famous Scottsboro Boys, as told to renowned journalist Earl Conrad during Mr Patterson's brief interlude of illicit freedom between 1947 and 1950. The inscription states "Many thanks for your help," and is signed by Haywood Patterson. This is the only author-signed volume to ever appear in the marketplace. Neither of the official archives of Earl Conrad nor Haywood Patterson hold signed copies of this book. It is not just important and rare, but may possibly be the only one. Haywood Patterson was in prison from 1932 to 1947, on the run from 1947-1950. The book was published in June of 1950, and Haywood Patterson was back in prison by December of 1950. He died in prison in 1952. The signature has been verified, using documents at the Morris Library at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, whose archive holds samples of Haywood Patterson's handwriting and signature. Leigh Fermor, Patrick
John Murray, London, 1950. First edition of Leigh Fermor's first book. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Boldly signed by Patrick Leigh Fermor on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Illustrations by A. Costa. "In the late 1940s Patrick Leigh Fermor, now widely regarded as one of the twentieth century’s greatest travel writers, set out to explore the then relatively little-visited islands of the Caribbean. Rather than a comprehensive political or historical study of the region, The Traveller’s Tree, Leigh Fermor’s first book, gives us his own vivid, idiosyncratic impressions of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad, and Haiti, among other islands. Here we watch Leigh Fermor walk the dusty roads of the countryside and the broad avenues of former colonial capitals, equally at home among the peasant and the elite, the laborer and the artist. He listens to steel drum bands, delights in the Congo dancing that closes out Havana’s Carnival, and observes vodou and Rastafarian rites, all with the generous curiosity and easy erudition that readers will recognize from his subsequent classic accounts A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water" (New York Review Books). Fejes, Gyula
Size: A0 2 Sheet (cca. 84 x 119 cm). Original Hungarian vintage commercial poster from 1950 by Gyula Fejes and J aacute nos Macsk aacute ssy The poster promotes cigarettes in general A man and a woman is smoking and relaxing on a bench in the park The artists placed the characters in diagonal while the text above them is horizontal The contrast catches the attention of the passerby on many levels There are not much detail shown regarding the environment the couple is sitting in except the lawn in the background with some white flowers however it is just enough information to understand the setting Although the poster was created in 1950 when it was obligatory for artists to apply the socialist realist style this piece is more artistic and has a unique atmosphere unlike most of the advertising art at the time Fine, light fold marks and creasing.

Bradbury, Ray
Doubleday & Co, Garden City, 1950. First edition of Bradbury's magnum opus. The Martian Chronicles consists of a string of episodes originally published separately. All of them relate to the colonization and exploration of Mars and result in a compelling narrative. Bradbury's mixture of science fiction and fantasy is first shown in book form in The Martian Chronicles. A fine copy with the inevitable sunning to the spine and edges of the boards, and slight bowing to lower board. In a near fine dust wrapper that shows hints of wear at the extremities. A cornerstone in any serious collection of science fiction. (Barron 3-32; Pringle 3). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Nabokov, Vladimir
First printing of this edition, and first printing in paperback of Nabokov's first novel, originally titled "Kamera Obscura." INSCRIBED by Nabokov for publisher Kurt Enoch: "Vladimir Nabokov / IV.1950." From the Kurt Enoch collection, with a letter of provenance included. Apart from the rarity of the signature, the book was inscribed Nabokov a full five years before "Lolita" was published by the Olympia Press in Paris, propelling him to international fame. Originally published 23 years prior to his controversial masterpiece "Lolita," "Laughter in the Dark" is something of a study for that book, about a middle-aged man's sexual fixation on a much younger woman, and how the ways they use each other lead to their downfalls. Kurt Enoch was the founder of Signet Books and a publisher whose desire was to bring great literature and genre fiction out of the libraries and into the hands of readers. With a letter of provenance included. A tremendous association. Near Fine in wrappers. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Dorothy N. Stusrt
D.B.S. Santa Fe New Mexico, 1950. Truly exceptional and very rare first printing of Dorothy Stewart's Handbook of Indian Dances I New Mexico Pueblos. Includes rare untorn dust jacket. Unfortunately a prior owner wrote the word "Indians"in black ink,on the front of the jacket. The publication itself is not affected except for a minimal bleed through from the ink and an imprint of a paperclip.Staples are intact and not rusted, pages are firmly bound. Please see photos. All of the 8 wood cuts are present, and are very clean and unmarked. I have included a copy of the 1952 for comparison. This is an addition that would be welcome in the library of any serious collector of Native Americana. Please see photos as they are an integral part of the description. Any yellowish or whitish tint on the photos is not on the photos themselves but is the fault of the camera. I will gladly combine shipping on multiple purchases if the buyer notifies me prior to paying so that I can send an invoice with the combined postage. This item, because of its scarcity and worth, will be fully insured, receiver's signature required, and I will pay all such charges. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

The Man Who Sold the Moon is a science fiction novella by Robert A. Heinlein written in 1949 and first published on February 23, 1951, part of his "Future History" of stories sharing a common background from "Life-Line" to "Da Capo". This story, which has the sequel "Requiem", covered events around a fictional first moon-landing, in 1978. It follows the story "Blowups Happen" in the Future History chronology. In that story, space flight was supposedly assured by a new nuclear fuel produced in an orbiting reactor. In this episode the reactor has been destroyed and the nuclear rocket has been found to be a dead-end. The Man Who Sold the Moon follows the machinations of Delos D. Harriman, "the first of the new robber barons," who is determined to reach and control the Moon. The story centers on Harriman's wheelings and dealings to accomplish his dream. "I," he tells his business partner, "would cheat, lie, steal, beg, bribe -- do anything to accomplish what we have … [Click Below for Full Description]
