Kuhfuss, Paul
Midcentury French tabletop wooden game based on the Space Race of the 1950's and 1960's between the Soviet Union and the United States, housed inside of a hinged wooden box and comprised of a revolving spring-loaded wooden launcher, two original plastic rockets for launching, a set of score-keeping beads, and a color illustration of Soviet and American rockets and satellites in space affixed to the inside of the lid with eight different target cups bearing the names of various planets and rockets, the same illustration affixed to the exterior of the lid. Very light signs of wear and shallow scratches to exterior, excellent overall condition. Vox measures 21-1/2 by 11-3/4 by 3 inches, closed. N.p. (France) n.d. (circa 1960s). The Space Race officially began on August 2, 1955, when the Soviet Union responded to the announcement made by the United States 4 days ealier of their intent to launch artifical satellites, by declaring that they would also launch a satellite in the near future. This game features major figures from the Space Race, with the red launch rocket (and corresponding red target cup and accompanying illustration) referring to Yuri Gagarin, the first human to orbit Earth, and the yellow launch rocket (and corresponding yellow target cup and accompanying illustration) referring to Leroy Gordon Cooper, the US astronaut who manned the longest and final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. The other target cups have labels for the moon, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. A well-made tabletop game, from a time of global fascination with outer space and spaceflight.

signed in pencil by the photographer, showing the wedding group surrounded by their bridesmaids, who include Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, daughter of George V, Princess Maud, daughter of HRH Duchess of Fife, Lady May Cambridge and Alistair the son of Princess Alexandra of Fife, 12½" x 8½", no place, (Buckingham Palace), no date, Princess Patricia of Connaught was deeply loved by the British people for her natural ways. King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra profoundly wanted a marriage with Grand Duke Michael of Russia. Very unusually the Princess, when she married Admiral Sir Alexander Ramsay fought to lose her title. The King reluctantly agreed on condition that she still remained head of Peeresses of the Realm. Theirs was to prove an exceptionally happy marriage of over 50 years and by the late 1950s, because of the couple's dignity, they remained very much en famille with the Royal Family. From the collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay, daughter of the Duke of Connaught.

Graham Greene
First Edition. 8vo (19cm).188pp. Original black boards; lettered in silver gilt; hint of crease to spine; top edge dust-stained; endpapers a bit tanned; free endpaper pulled away slightly from title-page; in an unfortunately tired dust-jacket, creased and with some areas of loss. Copies of this book are relatively scarce in any state. Published one year after the release of the acclaimed "The Third Man" film directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles. The novella serves, as a way, as Greene's "director's cut" where he was able to expand and elaborate in ways he wasn't permitted with the screenplay. Due to their connection with the well-known films, these novellas are presented by the publisher as "entertainments". The book is dedicated "To Carol Reed in admiration and affection and in memory of so many early morning Vienna hours at Maxim's, the Casanova, the Oriental"

GREENE, Graham
GREENE, Graham The Third Man and The Fallen Idol. London: William Heinemann, 1950. 8vo., black publisher's boards with lettering in silver to spine. Complete with first-issue dust wrapper. Very lightly yellowed, otherwise fine. Jacket has had some minor repairs to head and foot, with extremities retouched, however remains bright and near-fine.First edition, complete with first issue dustwrapper. Greene worked out the atmosphere, characterisation and mood of the 1949 film The Third Man by writing a novella, and intended this to be a source text for the screenplay. He never intended it to be published although this, the first edition, was released a year later. The final scene, however, differs between the two, with Greene arguing for a happy ending and the producers deciding on a more ambiguous turn, refusing to end the film on what they believed to be an unrealistically positive note. 1950. Very good in wrappers. GRAHAM GREENE "The Third Man -- Dialogue Script" FIRST EDITION No place of publication: Selznick Releasing Corporation, 1950, 1950. 122 mimeographed pages printed on rectos only; apart from the dialogue it includes a title leaf and a three page synopsis with character descriptions, as well as two pages of credits, all on Selznick Releasing Corporation printed forms measuring 14 x 10.5; the dialogue is identified with its starting and ending place in the final film. The title leaf reads, The Third Man/ A Selznick Release/ Prepared by Sidney G. Samuels/ March, 1950. This is the revised dialogue for the American release, and includes the original and new lines. For various reasons, the American release was 11 minutes shorter than the English one. Bound at the top with brass studs. Generally in very good, complete condition. This script was previously owned by Serendipity Books and includes a copy of their descriptions of the item in 2008. It was later sold at auction by Bonhams, which sold most of Serendipity's inventory after the death of owner Peter Howard, and this comes with the sticker from that sale. Pre-1950. Framing: Unframed A very early CDV photograph of Beaumontƒ??s 11 cricket team probably when they played Eton at Lordƒ??s measuring approximately 4 x 2 ?« inches. The earliest know photograph of the game being played was attributed as 1850 as detailed in the article below. I could not find the earliest organized team cricket photograph but this has to be one of the earliest. Also, the first black player played at Beaumont around this time. Further research may reveal that this player is pictured in this photo the young man upper right a possibility. Beaumont College was a Jesuit public school in Old Windsor, Berkshire, England from 1861 ƒ?? 1967. As in other public schools, sport was important indeed, an annual cricket match was played at Lord's against the Oratory until 1965.[9] Moreover, Beaumont held a number of sporting and similar distinctions. Only two public schools, Eton and Beaumont, came to send both their First Eleven to Lord's and their First Eight to Henley and the first black player at Lord's was a Beaumont boy. When Pierre de Coubertin visited England in the course of researching the basis of his new Olympic movement, the four schools he looked at were Eton, Harrow, Rugby and Beaumont. WIENER, Norbert.
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1950. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company,, 1950. Cybernetics and Society. Octavo. Original beige cloth, spine lettered in red with ridged lines continuing to front cover in purple, emblem of cog and workers blocked to front cover in red. With the dust jacket. A very good copy in the lightly toned jacket, very minor creasing and nicking around extremities. First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. The Human Use of Human Beings was Wiener's effort to produce a popular exposition of his ideas as first expressed in Cybernetics (1948), which was "the first conventionally published book, rather than a technical report, to include a serious discussion of electronic digital computing" (Origins of Cyberspace 991). Wiener published this follow-up at the urging of his friends, who suggested he distil these thoughts into a more accessible format. Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) was a mathematician and philosopher at MIT and the founder of the field of cybernetics, which he defined as the study of "control and communication in the animal and the machine" (jacket blurb). In this volume he analyses the roles that computers might play in society, arguing that they will liberate workers from drudgery in favour of more creative and fulfilling occupations.

Shaffer, Ellen
Los Angeles: Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, 1950. Tall quarto. 62pp. One of 300 copies printed by the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. The leaf is from the portion of the Chronicle on the sixth age of the world. It bears two woodcuts on the recto and six on the verso, each presenting a portrait of a monarch, bishop, or other significant figures to accompany a corresponding biography. The recto has two three-line initials and the verso has seven. The leaf is taken not from the more commonly encountered 1493 Nuremberg edition, but from the "pirated" 1497 Augsburg edition. The volume itself is illustrated with an opening decorative initial and numerous reproductions of the original woodcuts, including the well-known Dance of Death. Ellen Shaffer's extensive essay offers a history of the Nuremberg Chronicle, along with a census of copies in North America of its fifteenth-century editions. Some staining to bottom of leaf with minor wear along fore-edge. Some minor rubbing to extremities and a small tear at top gutter of front paste-down, else a fine copy in blue pictorial cloth boards. Duplicate unsewn gathering of front matter from half-title through acknowledgements laid in. Bookplate. (BCC #20; Chalmers 103, pp. 83-84).
