CAMUS, Albert
(Paris): Charlot, 1950. Softcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition, limited issue. Tall octavo. Small chip at the spine crown, very good in printed wrappers and unprinted glassine dustwrapper. One of 120 copies reserved for the use of the author of a total edition of 1343 copies. This is copy number 848 on Rives paper. The copies numbered between 801 to 920 were the author's copies. Inscribed by the author: "a Nicole, et Jean Marie/ avec la fidele affection/ de leur vieux camarade/ Albert Camus." ["To Nicole, and Jean Marie/ with the faithful affection/of their old comrade/ Albert Camus."]. The recipients were almost certainly Nicole and Jean-Marie Domenach, French intellectuals and friends of Camus, albeit with some philosophical differences. Jean-Marie was a noted left wing Catholic thinker, and while he and Camus were both vocal in protesting such activities as the French use of torture during the Algerian Civil War, Domenach had considerably more sympathy for the socialist and communist governments of the time, which Camus found repugnant. It is interesting to note the comma in the inscription, as though the inclusion of Jean-Marie in the presentation was an afterthought, or perhaps a necessity of politesse. Long after Camus had died, Jean-Marie Domenach provided a preface to a book of his thinking, *Albert Camus and Christianity. Hope on Trial.* The deluxe editions of this title turn up at auction with some regularity, but we were unable to find any instance of one of the author's copies in the market, and very few copies of this limited edition have ever turned … [Click Below for Full Description]

TURING, ALAN
New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd, 1950. First edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Alan Turing's landmark explanation of what would become known as the "Turing test" to determine whether a machine can 'think'. In "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," "Turing sidestepped the debate about exactly how to define thinking by means of a very practical, albeit subjective, test: if a computer acts, reacts, and interacts like a sentient being, then call it sentient. To avoid prejudicial rejection of evidence of machine intelligence, Turing suggested the 'imitation game,' now known as the Turing test: a remote human interrogator, within a fixed time frame, must distinguish between a computer and a human subject based on their replies to various questions posed by the interrogator. By means of a series of such tests, a computer's success at 'thinking' can be measured by its probability of being misidentified as the human subject. Turing predicted that by the year 2000 a computer 'would be able to play the imitation game so well that an average interrogator will not have more than a 70-percent chance of making the right identification (machine or human) after five minutes of questioning.' No computer has come close to this standard" (Britannica). Along with Turing's own 1936 paper "On Computable Numbers," "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" is regarded as one of the foundational works on artificial intelligence. In MIND, A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy, Vol. 59, No. 236, October, 1950, pp. 433-460. New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd., 1950. Octavo, or … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOEB, Philip]
A small grouping of items relating to the life of Philip Loeb, an actor best known for his radio work on the hit program "The Goldbergs." The collection likely comes from another actor named John Most, as his name appears on several of these documents. Loeb was accused of being a communist in 1950 and was subsequently blacklisted. Loeb steadfastly denied communist sympathies, but the blow to his professional life was too much to bear, and Loeb commited suicide in a hotel room in New York in 1955. Included are two postcard-sized photographic prints of Loeb watching a rehearsal of a play he was directing on Broadway, "The Three Sisters," by Chekhov; an 8" x 15" program for that same play; an an 8" x 10" portrait of Loeb, inscribed by him to Johnny Most; a program for a play produced by Loeb entitled "Common to the Trade" (about 7.5" x 11"); some news clippings of Loeb's untimely death; and, perhaps most interestingly, a small postcard depicting First National Studios in Hollywood, with a small note from Loeb on the back, adressed to Most: "the colored ones are those I have organized. Love, Phil." Loeb had a long career as an officer in the Actor's Equity Association, now over a century old, and one of the most consistently radical unions in the entertinment world, having stood for integration in the 1940s, and steadfastly against McCarthyism in the 1950s (while the Screen Actor's Guild has a much more checkered history). Condition varies from good to very good, with general age-toning to some documents, some old tape or glue residue on the reverse of some pieces, but the coll … [Click Below for Full Description]

[NIN, Anais]. "ANIN"
Carmel [CA]: (The Press of the Sunken Eye), 1950. First Edition. 4to. Carbon typescript bound in full blue cloth with titles gilt to spine. Marbled endpapers. Mild bumping, rubbing. Small tear to cloth at base of spine. Top board a bit bowed. Two contemporary newspaper clippings pasted to prelim. with attendant offsetting to title page. Ownership signature ("Dave Wauters") to same. Solidly very good or better overall. One of five copies "reproduced on latrine rag," this #2. Holograph signed postcard from Nin loosely laid in to poet and painter Alvaro Cardona-Hine, whose copy this was. [iii]. [1]-43, [i], 1-51. The origins, both bibliographically and biographically, of Anais Nin's AULETRIS are murky to say the least. The book's rarity, issued in a typescript edition of just 5 copies by a mysterious press, has undoubtedly contributed to this. But so too have the competing motivations of the principals, the secrecy surrounding the production of erotica during a period when obscenity trials were still common, and Nin and (apparent co-conspirator) Henry Miller's own obfuscations. What is known with some certainty is the following. First, that "Press of the Sunken Eye" was the operation of California bookseller Milton Luboviski and that Luboviski printed just two books under that imprint: the present volume and OPUS PISTORUM, attributed to Henry Miller, both in 1950. Miller and Nin famously began penning pornography for Oklahoma collector Roy Mellisandre Johnson in 1940, and while Miller soon grew tired of the project (which paid $1/page), Nin continued both to write fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eliot, T.S
Faber & Faber, London. First edition of Eliot's most popular play published in his lifetime. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his sister, "Marian Eliot from Tom." The recipient Marian Cushing Eliot was the sister of T.S. Eliot and his favorite. Light rubbing, near fine in near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association. The Cocktail Party was written while Eliot was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1948. It was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949. In 1950 the play had successful runs in London and New York theaters (the Broadway production received the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play.) It focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. The play starts out seeming to be a light satire of the traditional British drawing room comedy. As it progresses, however, the work becomes a darker philosophical treatment of human relations. As in many of Eliot's works, the play uses absurdist elements to expose the isolation of the human condition. In another recurring theme of Eliot's plays, the Christian martyrdom of the mistress character is seen as a sacrifice that permits the predominantly secular life of the community to continue."An authentic modern masterpiece" (New York Post). "Eliot really does portray real-seeming characters. He cuts down his poetic effects to the minimum, and then finally rewards us with most beautiful poetry" (Stephen … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMUS Albert
[Click Below for Full Description]

WILKINS, Maurice (1916-2004) - Erwin CHARGAFF (1905-2002); Stephen ZAMENHOF (1911-1998); and Charlotte GREEN
London: Nature, 1950. 8vo. 5pp. Lightly age-darkened. FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT ISSUE, SIGNED by Maurice Wilkins at the head of the first page. Chargaff became interested in DNA in 1944 after Oswald Avery identified the molecule as the basis of heredity. This paper shows that amounts of adenine and thymine in DNA were roughly the same, as were the amounts of cytosine and guanine. The paper that explained what would later be known as the first of Chargaff's rules: "that a double-stranded DNA molecule globally has percentage base pair equality: %A = %T and %G = %C. The rigorous validation of the rule constitutes the basis of Watson-Crick pairs in the DNA double helix model" (Wikipedia). Maurice Wilkins cited this paper in his own work, finding very useful the description of the process by which various proteins were isolated for study.

Nabokov, Vladimir
New York: Signet Books, 1950. First edition thus. Near Fine. First paperback edition of Kamera Obskura. Signed on the title page by Nabokov for the Signet publisher Kurt Enoch and dated the month after publication (five years before Nabokov acheived major literary success with Lolita). Nabokov famously would not autograph books unless he knew the recipient, making signed first editions of his work scarce. Near Fine with only slight wear at the spine. Nabokov's novel about passion, betrayal, and ambition predated his infamous Lolita by 23 years. Laughter in the Dark allowed the author to develop themes connected to a middle-aged man's passion for a younger woman, and to explore how a parasitic relationship based on lust could lead to mutual downfall. Provenance: From the library of Kurt Enoch, who founded the New American Library and subsequently its Signet and Penguin imprints, and who in the late 1940s invented the mass market paperback, bringing the work of many great authors to a vast and entirely new readership. Near Fine.

The novel was not published until 1951 when Houghton Mifflin brought it out in the United States.
